KQED’s Housing Podcast Explores the Specter of Evictions

As a result of the pandemic, millions of renters suddenly found themselves on the precipice of eviction. To help support these renters, an unprecedented amount of tenant protections and financial assistance for renters was initially put in place. While these measures were necessary to prevent widespread displacement, they were only temporary — a Band-Aid to a bigger problem. As renter protections expired, a growing number of tenants, advocates, and political leaders have been questioning the system of evictions while confronting the long-standing discriminatory policies that have led to persistent racial inequality in housing.

With the pandemic still ongoing, Solomon and Baldassari look at the process of evictions from a number of angles, including the way evictions impact not only individuals but communities; which types of tenants are more likely to be evicted; the power of property ownership; a tenant's right to counsel in a court of law; and how rental assistance can help keep people housed.

Celebrate Black History Month: Explore an Event That Shook the Sports World When they won track and field spots at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, two Black athletes out of San Jose State, were frustrated with the racist treatment of Black people in sports and considered a boycott, but opted instead to take a personal stand. In an act of power, strength and defiance, the two men stood on the winners’ stand and raised their black-gloved fists in a Black power salute. Among other symbolic clothing, they wore black socks but no shoes (to note Black poverty) and buttons from the Olympic Project for Human Rights, a program of boycotts and protests that sought to expose how Black athletes were exploited

and mistreated. This was a defining moment in Black American and sports history, one that came with stinging consequences for Smith and Carlos. The stand they took still reverberates today.

The Stand takes us back to this critical time in history through in-depth accounts from Smith, Carlos and others. It also provides insight into the collective planning that went into the iconic gesture of defiance and offers some perspective on the aftermath and what that says about our society. Celebrate Black History Month by watching The Stand, which airs on Sunday, February 6, at 9pm on KQED Plus.

• In 2005, Smith and Carlos were honored by San Jose State University, their alma matter, with a sculpture commemorating the iconic Olympic event.

• Local sociologist and civil rights advocate Dr. Harry Edwards was an inspirational mentor for Smith and Carlos and a driving force behind the demonstration at the 1968 Olympics.

• Longtime East Bay resident, the late Toni Stone, was the first female baseball player in the Negro Leagues. She played for the San Francisco Sea Lions in 1949.

Call the Midwife, Season 11 It’s the 1960s and our favorite midwives are back. In the first episode, the builders doing demolition at a nearby tenement block make a shocking discovery, which involves the police and ripples through the community. The investigation leads to someone close to home and has a heartbreaking effect on the women.

Saturday, February 12 at 8pm on KQED 9 Play it again (and again and even again; it’s that good), Sam. This 1942 film pairs Bogie, Bergman and Henreid as Rick (Bogie) decides whether to help his former lover and her fugitive husband escape from the Nazis in French Morocco. The scene where they sing “The Marseilles,” the French national anthem, is an enduring moment of cinematic defiance.
