Celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride Month

It’s a joy to celebrate all of the life experiences, beliefs and cultures that create the rich tapestry of who we are as a community. In June, we honor LGBTQ+ Pride Month, shining a light on individuals who have shaped our world through their unique contributions to art and music, civic engagement, science and medicine, and so much more. This month, you'll discover programming that includes the inspiring story of a drag performer from Cameroon, a documentary on modern-day gay civil rights and portraits of LGBTQ+ musicians who shifted mainstream points of view. And, sit back and tour majestic landscapes in the gorgeous and entertaining series Alan Cumming’s Most Luxurious Train Journeys: Scotland, which premieres on Thursday, June 5, at 8pm on KQED Plus. You can watch these programs on KQED Public Television or live during KQED 9 broadcasts on the KQED App. Many are also available on-demand on the PBS App with KQED Passport.

Breaking the Silence on the Real Janis Ian

I have a confession. Before watching the new American Masters documentary Janis Ian: Breaking the Silence, the only Janis Ian I’d ever heard of was featured in the 2004 blockbuster movie Mean Girls. In that film, written by Saturday Night Live alum Tina Fey, Janis Ian is an edgy teenage outcast harassed by girls at her high school who believe she's a lesbian. The Mean Girls’ Janis Ian is something of an icon for those of us in Gen-Z because of her strong, rebellious attitude and resilience in spite of social hostility. It turns out this fictitious Janis Ian was actually, in part, an homage to the real-life singer-songwriter who overcame similar circumstances. She was outed as a lesbian by The Village Voice in 1976, the same year she won a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performer, perhaps in an attempt to dim the light of the rising counterculture star.

In 1993, when the real Janis Ian launched her album Breaking Silence, the release coincided with her bringing her sexuality to the forefront; she publically came out as a lesbian on her own terms. She did so deliberately because of her concern for the alarming suicide rates among LGBTQ+ teenagers at the time, recognizing that representation could very much save people’s lives. Ian has contributed hit songs to the American pop canon since she was a teenager herself. From the very beginning, her music served as social commentary on an array of divisive issues. Her first hit song “Society’s Child,” released in 1966, was about an interracial relationship. When I listened to it for the first time, I left the track was on repeat for hours. I was so entranced by the wisdom in her lyrics and the fact that she wrote the song when she was only 13 years old.

American Masters – Janis Ian: Breaking the Silence gives viewers full access to her incredible body of music. This in-depth musical film has the intimacy of a home movie set against a sweeping historical context, featuring her vast archive and interviews with family, friends, famed collaborators and music journalists. You don’t want to miss the premiere on Friday, June 20, at 9pm on KQED 9. Viewers can also stream it live on the KQED App at the time of the premiere.

AMERICAN MASTERS: KEITH HARING — STREET ART BOY

This portrait of Keith Haring is a fascinating look into a creative force whose art lit up the gritty chaos of 1970s and ’80s New York — and then basically conquered the world. It’s amazing to hear Haring’s own voice narrate his slingshot into fame. I always love a glimpse of underground queer culture, and this documentary delivers. As a Pride Month watch, it’s inspiring to witness Haring’s belief that everyone has a voice and his fierce commitment to making art accessible to all. Enjoy this electric tribute to an artist who burned bright and whose singular vision will live on forever. This American Masters episode will become Passport-only on June 30. —Fred Lopez, Signal Society Officer, Membership
