The 20th season of this popular series continues with three new episodes featuring delicious destinations in the Monterey Bay area. The first episode takes guests to Seaside’s The Meatery Butchery & Eatery to enjoy the rich flavors of an 18-hour smoked brisket as well as juicy pastrami Reubens. Then it’s off to Hanloh Thai Food, a seasonally inspired restaurant tucked inside a natural wine bar and bookstore in Santa Cruz, that specializes in double-fried chicken thighs of gai tod hat yai. At Schooners Monterey, diners feast on cioppino brimming with shellfish in saffron-tomato broth and fresh Dungeness crab BLT rolls.
The second episode journeys to the storybook streets of Carmel-by-the-Sea, where El Bistro by The Sea offers a breakfast-lunch menu with Mexican flair. Dishes include crème brûlée French toast with caramelized sugar and chicken chilaquiles with crema. At Julia’s Vegetarian in Pacific Grove, it’s time to sample crispy, fried cordyceps mushrooms and yellow coconut curry, and at Sampa Brazilian Kitchen in Santa Cruz, the flavors of São Paulo are showcased in a vegan feijoada (black bean stew) and pão de queijo (a traditional cheese bread).
In the finale, diners adventure to Monterey’s Woody’s at the Airport, where elevated comfort food, such as buttery sautéed sand dabs, meets panoramic runway views and to Pacific Grove’s Lucy’s on Lighthouse, a hot dog shop that pays tribute to NorCal surf and skate culture. The special wraps up at Soquel’s Home, a former house-turned-restaurant that offers a candy cap mushroom panna cotta topped with porcini filo. Be sure to tune in for all the coastal cuisine on Thursdays, July 10, 17 and 24 at 7:30pm on KQED 9.

It’s officially summertime! As we look forward to pool parties, Fourth of July fireworks and family barbecues, we also look forward to a new season of one of our favorite shows: The Great American Recipe. A friendly cooking competition that follows in the footsteps of The Great British Baking Show, the series is centered on the simple joy of food. While it’s judged by Michelin-star chefs, the contestants are everyday home cooks who share a passion for meals they’ve learned from the generations before them. There is no cash prize and no trophy; instead the victorious cook receives the honor of having their winning recipe featured on the cover of the show’s signature cookbook.
With such a heartwarming setup, it’s no surprise that the program is more focused on family traditions than on perfect techniques or professional skills. It’s the celebration of personal histories that makes the series so unique. To give you a taste of what I mean, in Season 1, Episode 1, the theme of the first round is “If I Were a Recipe,” and each of the 10 contestants prepares a recipe that’s close to their heart.
Ranging from Rhode Island–style fried calamari to Puerto Rican mofongo (a classic plantain dish) and from Korean gochujang tacos to Syrian baklava, the dishes are as diverse as the home cooks, who each give a nod to their cultural roots. A father from Los Angeles presents a Vietnamese-inspired beef salad, while a small business lender from Oregon makes Filipino adobo. We meet a grandmother from North Carolina with a sumptuous smoked macaroni and cheese and a mother from Idaho who shares an Italian flank steak with chimichurri.
Over six episodes, the home cooks vie for the title, showcasing a variety of cuisine that represents who they are, what they love and where they come from. I can’t wait for Season 4 to serve up a whole new bounty of flavors! Don’t miss the premiere on Friday, July 11, at 9pm on KQED 9. Viewers can also stream it live on the KQED App at the time of the premiere. Elyce Berrigan, Managing Editor

In this 2002 Steven Spielberg film, Leonardo DiCaprio portrays con artist Frank Abagnale Jr., who worked as a doctor, lawyer and copilot before he was 18 years old. FBI Agent Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks) makes it his prime mission to capture him, but Frank’s somehow always one step ahead.
