A Summer Night of Season Premieres

Ranging from solemn and unsmiling to quirky and lighthearted, the murder-mystery genre offers a variety of compelling programs that keep us guessing until the final reveal. Whether the investigators are bonafide detectives or everyday sleuths, our viewing pleasure comes from watching as the pieces come together. If you are a fan of whodunit series, then you’ll want to stay glued to your television set on Sunday, August 24, at 8pm, 9pm and 10pm on KQED 9 for three very different season premieres.

Starting with the fourth season of Professor T at 8pm, the night kicks off on an eccentric note. Brilliant yet brusque criminology professor Jasper Tempest is aiding the police in a new murder case while juggling his personal life. His astute crime-solving skills are again at odds with — or abetted by — his long list of phobias, making for a clever, quick-witted series.

Then, at 9pm, the second season of The Marlow Murder Club on MASTERPIECE debuts. We are whisked back to the quaint village of Marlow, where retired archaeologist Judith Potts teams up with unfulfilled vicar’s wife Becks Starling and empty-nester Suzie Harris to uncover the murderous secrets within their otherwise peaceful town. In the season premiere, the trio is pulled into a tangled mystery when a groom is found dead the day before his wedding. The women do all they can to assist in the official investigation, for better or for worse. Settle in for upbeat, winsome fun.

Finally at 10pm, prepare for a shift in tone as Unforgotten on MASTERPIECE unveils its sixth season. Somber and serious (à la Vera), the premiere takes us from East London to County Cork, Ireland, and then to Deal, Kent, to uncover the truth behind a dismembered body. As we follow Detective Inspectors Sunny Kahn and Jessica Jones, we’re introduced to complex characters who don’t seem to have any relevance to each other. But through unexpected turns and forensic discoveries, we learn about a connection that traces back decades. Grim yet gripping, this is the kind of show that will have you riveted until the very end.

Enjoy every minute on Sunday, August 24, with Professor T at 8pm, The Marlow Murder Club on MASTERPIECE at 9pm and Unforgotten on MASTERPIECE at 10pm on KQED 9. Viewers can also stream the premieres on the KQED App at the time of their broadcast. And if you’re a Passport member, you’ll have early access to Professor T on Sunday, August 10, and can binge the whole new seasons of The Marlow Murder Club and Unforgotten on the night of the premieres.

WHAT TO WATCH

Get (Down) Under the Vines in This New (Zealand) Show

After unexpectedly inheriting a sprawling New Zealand vineyard, Australian socialite Daisy Munroe is elated. That is, until she discovers someone else has also been named the “sole heir” of the property. Grumpy London lawyer Louis Oakley is suddenly Daisy’s business partner, and the pair — who have little in common besides their lack of manual work experience — must now learn to cooperate despite their differences. To add to their troubles, the vineyard is dilapidated and in disarray.

Luckily, there are staff members on hand to help: quiet, quirky wine connoisseur Tippy and jack-of-all-trades handyman Gus. With the support of their team, Daisy and Louis may have a chance to turn their inheritance into the fortune they believed it to be. Of course, other entertaining characters are introduced, including Daisy’s dashing best friend, Griff; eccentric sculptor Vic and her lawyer husband Nick; and rival winemakers Don and Marissa Silverton, who have their eye on the expansive property.

In addition to the charming premise, the series is aesthetically wondrous. With vast rolling hills, acres of grapes, lush greenery and rustic buildings, every scene feels luxurious. The backdrop is a character on its own. Not to mention Daisy’s posh attire, which reminded me of the opulent looks worn by the titular character in Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries It’s all a feast for the eyes.

Blended in throughout all six episodes, along with the twisting relationships and lavish scenery, are elegant events where wine is showcased in its many varieties. Guests sip from formal glasses, tasting wines that are effervescent and sparkling, some that are soft pink and others dark red. For those who enjoy savoring a glass of wine at the end of the day, I recommend pairing your favorite with the premiere of Under the Vines on Tuesday, August 5, at 8pm on KQED Plus. Viewers can also stream it live on the KQED App at the time of the premiere. —Elyce Berrigan, Managing Editor

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE –CLEARING THE AIR: THE WAR ON SMOG

POV: MAYA LIN: A STRONG CLEAR VISION

Tuesday, July 22, at 10pm on KQED 9

Revisit the Oscar-winning story of Maya Lin, the young architect behind the Vietnam Veterans Memorial whose design was met with widespread controversy and public attacks. At the intersection of art, politics and creativity, she remained steadfast in her personal vision. The documentary is co-presented with CAAM (Center for Asian American Media).

Tuesday, August 26, at 9pm on KQED 9 In 1940s Los Angeles, a mysterious cloud of black smoke descended over the city. The struggle to determine the cause of — and then the cure for — smog would take years. Led by a coalition of scientists, politicians and activists, the movement led to the creation of the EPA and the Clean Air Act.

Eccentric professor Jasper Tempest (Ben Miller, Death in Paradise) is a genius criminologist from Cambridge University, and this season finds him deeply invested in his lectures. I love this series as well as the original Belgian version, which not only inspired this Englishlanguage spinoff, but German, French and Czech spinoffs too. (You can find the Belgian and UK versions streaming with Passport on the PBS App.) The new season will be available to binge with KQED Passport starting August 10, ahead of the broadcast premiere on August 24. Fans of this thrilling series will be glad to hear Season 5 has already been renewed as well. —Meredith Speight, Senior Director, TV Programming
