Area man dies at Columbia City SDI plant BY BOB BRALEY bbraley@kpcmedia.com

IU Dance Marathon leader has big goals for event this year

COLUMBIA CITY — An Albion man was killed in an industrial accident in Whitley County late Monday, the Whitley County coroner’s office said. Jeffery A. Flory, 44, of Albion died as the result of an accident at the Steel Dynamics Inc. plant at 2800 S. C.R. 800E, the coroner’s

BLOOMINGTON (AP) — The president of this fall’s Indiana University Dance Marathon knows her way around the event. Katie Speer will be taking part in her eighth Dance Marathon following four years as a Bloomington South High School student and now four years as an IU student. She’s heading up some 900 people organizing the annual fundraiser for the Ryan White Infectious Disease Center and the Ryan White Infectious Disease Research Center at Riley Hospital for Children. The Herald-Times reports the Dance Marathon is going into its 23rd year and Speer hopes to see it top last year’s record of more than $2.1 million raised. About 1,700 people did an 18-hour shift of dancing last year, and 300 tackled 36 straight hours with only short breaks.

office said. An autopsy determined that Flory died of blunt force trauma with multiple internal injuries, Whitley County Coroner Frederick R. Dellinger said. He ruled the death to be accidental. Emergency personnel were called to SDI shortly after 10 p.m. Monday, according to dispatch records. The coroner’s office

began its investigation at about 10:30 p.m., a news release said. The autopsy will be performed at the Allen County coroner’s office, but the Whitley County coroner will remain officially in charge of the investigation. SDI is working in cooperation with the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration to determine the cause of the accident, said Ben Eisbart, SDI ice president of human resources. An OSHA press release said it

has up to six months to complete an investigation, but this type of investigation usually takes about two months. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Flory family and to Jeff’s co-workers,” Eisbart said. Flory was a graduate of West Noble High School in the class of 1987. Assisting at the scene were the Indiana State Police, Whitley County Sheriff’s Department and Union Township Fire Department.

Taco Bell expands test of breakfast NEW YORK (AP) — Taco Bell says it’s expanding its small test of waffle tacos, as it prepares to take its breakfast menu national sometime next year. The fast-food chain says the waffle taco, which includes scrambled eggs, sausage and a side of syrup, was the top seller during breakfast hours at the five Southern California restaurants where they were tested earlier this year. Now the company wants to see how it would fare on a bigger scale; the waffle tacos and a full breakfast menu will be expanded to about 100 restaurants in Fresno, Calif.; Omaha, Neb.; and Chattanooga, Tenn., starting Thursday. Brian Niccol, president of Taco Bell, said the idea is partly to get a better sense of how well restaurants will be able to handle the added operational pressure from the waffle tacos. “You only get one shot when you go with big items,” he said.

AUBURN — DeKalb Chamber Partnership president Rob Moreland calls it his favorite chamber event. “There’s always nothing but good news on this day,” Moreland said Tuesday at the opening of the chamber’s annual breakfast recognizing new and expanding businesses. Tuesday’s event at Bridgewater Golf Club saluted 20 businesses that in the past year have invested $134 million and pledged to create up to 550 new jobs, according to Ken McCrory, executive director of the DeKalb County Economic Development Partnership. “We are getting stronger in the long haul,” McCrory said about the local business climate. “We have set the table quite well for the growth of existing industry … and attraction of new industry.” Mayor Norm Yoder said SEE CHAMBER, PAGE A6
