Firemen’s Park, located at the intersection of East Mill and North Williams streets in the northeastern section of Angola, has playground equipment, basketball courts, a baseball diamond and large pavilion with restroom facilities. During the summer months, the city provides a recreational program for area children at no charge. The park’s pavilion may be reserved by calling 665-2514. Fish Creek Trail, across Bellefontaine Road from Gnagy Park, Hamilton, offers hiking and education along the pristine Fish Creek. Fremont Town Park, located downtown, has picnic tables, a baseball diamond, volleyball court and children’s playground equipment and is open seven days a week. Gnagy Park, located at the west edge of Hamilton on Bellefontaine Road, has tennis courts, picnic facilities, playground equipment, basketball courts and baseball diamonds. Orland Town Park, located just north of the main street of Orland, off S.R. 327, features a ball diamond, playground equipment, basketball courts and a shelter house. At least six inches of snow must be on the trails in order for them to open. Skis are available at the Civilian Conservation Corps shelter from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday only. Nature Center Pokagon’s Nature Center is open Monday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Sunday and holidays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., spring, summer and early fall. During the late fall and through winter, the center is closed Monday and Tuesday; open Wednesday through Friday 1 to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, Sunday and holidays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Picnic Areas Tables, grills, toilet facilities, playground equipment and play fields are provided. Toboggan Visitors who enjoy fast rides will be excited to learn about the 1,700-foot, double-lane refrigerated toboggan run awaiting them at Pokagon. Slide hours are Friday 5 to 10 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Sunday and holidays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The slide opens on the Friday following Thanksgiving. During Christmas break, the slide is open during the week with extended hours from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. (except Sundays and holidays.) The open days vary by school holidays. Call the park office for dates. Sleds are $13 per hour, per sled, and hold up to four people. A valid driver’s license is required as a deposit to rent a sled. You must use a park sled. HISTORICAL SITES • The Cline Memorial Museum, 313 E. Maumee St., Angola, presents treasures from the 1900s to the 1920s. It is operated by the Steuben County Historical Society and is open Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. June through September. • Collins School on S.R. 120, midway between The Outlet Shoppes at Fremont and Orland. The one-room school first opened in 1877 and closed in 1943 due to school consolidations. It is open Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m. during the summer months. • Powers Church, located on Old S.R. 1 about a quarter mile north of U.S. 20, east of Angola. The church was founded in 1876 as a Free Church and has been fully restored. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and services are held there each summer.
