Energy efficiency tools advance every year Q. In the near future, my wife and I are going to build a house on some land that we have out in the country. We have been doing some SQUARE research on what CORNERS we want to build. I have seen lots Jeff Deahl of information on the green building and zero energy homes of today, but how effective are some of the odd elements of this type of construction? I have talked to a builder and it seems like he is not really doing anything different than when we built several years ago. Should I look for more dramatic differences in a new home today? Dean of DeKalb County. A. These trends are not new, and, yes, there are things that we do differently every year in making a home the best it can be. Some of these changes are subtle in an ongoing effort to make more energy efficient and also lessening our footprint for future generations. Building green is an effort to use products that are sustainable or recycled. There is also an effort to use products that are American made, decreasing shipping and transportation efforts. When striving for energy efficiency improvements going zero costs more money and requires design and additional effort beyond standard construction.

Some relatively new techniques that most quality builders are incorporating today include insulated headers in exterior walls over doors and windows or in two story homes; actually moving the header load into the engineered floor above to allow full insulation where the headers used to be; and taller heels on the roof trusses so that full insulation in the attic can go all the way out to the exterior wall. Improved air sealing and insulation is always a good investment. High efficiency HVAC equipment and air quality techniques are also a no brainer.

In search of natural hues? A garden ‘to dye for’ THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Homegrown botanical dyes are in, part of today’s shift toward more natural and organic living. And you don’t need a degree in chemistry to create your own hues for scarves, sweaters or even Easter eggs. All it takes is a garden plot or a few pots and a kitchen. “If you’re already gardening or already even have a landscape, you can look out your window and you can use the things that are there, that you’re already growing, for a dyer’s garden,” says Chris McLaughlin, a gardener in Placerville, California, and author of the new book “A Garden to Dye For: How to Use Plants from the Garden to Create Natural Colors for Fabrics and Fibers” (St. Lynn’s Press).

Where to start? If you’re planting a new dye garden, McLaughlin’s book contains several different garden plans. An edible dye garden, for example, might be best if you have limited space and can’t justify giving up square footage for anything other than fruits and veggies. Suggested plants include carrots, bee balm, rosemary, purple basil, red onions, chamomile, beets, blueberries, red cabbage and marjoram. A cutting dye garden features flowers that can be cut for indoor display or tossed in the dye pot. McLaughlin recommends roses, hollyhocks, dahlias, rudbeckia, purple coneflowers, zinnias and cosmos. Of course, you can always mix veggies and flowers, or plant a few items in containers. And if you’re already gardening, chances are you have some of these plants and flowers in your backyard. “Even a typical suburban landscape that was planted by the housing developer might have birch, juniper, roses, Japanese maple or eucalyptus,” McLaughlin says. For beginners, French marigolds and onions (red or yellow) are easy to grow and produce vivid colors for dyes, according to Julie Jensen, farmer and founder of Echoview Farm and Fiber Mill near Asheville, North Carolina.

Which plants for which colors? Appearance isn’t everything. The vibrant pink flowers of the peony, for example, result in a pale lime green when used for dye, according to Howard Freilich, founder of the New York-based landscaping service Blondie’s Treehouse. Here’s a list of his favorite sources for various hues: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Growing tips A dye garden doesn’t require any more work than a typical garden. But Freilich notes that dye content in plants is significantly influenced by temperature, humidity and sun exposure. “So you want to make sure that the plant is growing in its ideal condition,” he says. McLaughlin recommends leaving at least 4 feet of space around the beds to make it easier to harvest and tend to the plants and flowers. That leaves room for wheelbarrows and other equipment.

Harvesting tips Blossoms should be in full bloom, and berries and nuts ripe when harvesting plants for dyes, according to Freilich. As for roots, the dye content increases as the plant ages. However, most of the plants that contain dyes in their roots are perennials, and will take two to three years to develop enough dye for harvesting, he says.

If picking an entire plant or leaves, do so at the end of their growing season so the dye content is at its peak.

A simple dye recipe for fun, naturally dyed play dough • • • • •

2 cups ﬂour 1 cup salt 1 tablespoon cream of tartar 1 1/2 cups water 1/2 cup natural dye (can be created from blueberry, beetroot, onion skins, red cabbage, spinach leaves, cranberries, hibiscus tea, grape juice, turmeric, etc.) • 1/4 cup oil

Heat all ingredients in a pot on the stove on low to medium heat. Using a wooden spoon, stir continuously until the mixture pulls away from the sides of the pot. Continue stirring until it really pulls away from the sides, gets deeper in color and becomes a big ball. Let cool. To make smaller batches in a variety of colors, divide the dough into equal parts and punch into the center of each one. Grow sunflowers for edible seed, floral arrangements In my opinion, the happy-face of the plant world is a big, beautiful, yellow sunflower. They can be grown as a cash crop for their edible seed and oil or for the sunshine they add to a floral arrangement. Sunflowers (helianthus annuus) grow rather rapidly producing large, rough leaves and seed laden heads. The yellow petals that you see around the outside of the head are ray petals, attracting pollinators to the disk KNOWLEDGE and the face of the TO GROW head actually contains hundreds of disk flowers, each of which Karen Weiland will form a seed. Sunflower heads turn with or track the sun during the early stages of their development. This aids in light exposure and photosynthesis. After pollination the disk will remain east-facing and eventually turn downward to protect the seeds from solar radiation.

Seeds may be planted about 1-2 inches deep after the soil has reached a temperature of 50-60 degrees and all danger of frost has passed, through mid-July. Sunflowers prefer well-drained, sandy loam soil and 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight. Depending on the variety, sunflowers mature and develop seeds in 80 to 120 days. Sow a new row every few weeks to provide continuous blooms until the first frost. While the shorter varieties will not require staking, it is helpful to provide support for those that grow more than 3 feet tall or are multi-branched. Plants that are shallow rooted and weighed down with heavy flower heads are vulnerable to summer storms with wind and rain. I have not had much of a problem with diseases or insects. Grasshoppers and caterpillars like to feed on the leaves but not so much that it has been detrimental to the plant or yield. As with everything else in the garden, good crop rotation will prevent problems with sunflowers. If you are not going to use the seeds, it is fun to watch wildlife enjoy the bounty. But if you do want to save them, protect the seed from birds by covering the head with burlap or netting. Sunflower seeds

Countertops get creative

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The concrete countertops in Eleanor Zuckerman’s San Francisco kitchen are hand-crafted works of art. Custom-designed by Fu-Tun Cheng of the Berkeley, California-based Cheng Concrete, they feature colors like brick, flowing lines and pictures of nautilus shells. “With concrete there is a lot of room for creativity, to say nothing of color,” says Zuckerman, a retired psychologist. “It gives you flexibility.” Homeowners looking to spice up their kitchens can install a variety of countertops that go beyond the traditional laminate and tile. Today’s options include concrete and butcherblock-style wood, and a range of custom-designed colors and shapes. IceStone countertops use recycled glass from broken bottles. “So many different materials are used in countertops these days,” says Tony Izzo, Curtis Lumber’s corporate kitchen and bath manager in Albany, New York. Until about 25 years ago, he says, roughly 90 percent of countertops in U.S. homes were laminate, and the rest tile. Then DuPont’s Corian hit the market, followed by granite and quartz, which are current favorites, he says. Today, just half of countertops are laminate, Izzo says. The burgeoning interest in alternative countertops is the natural extension of that trend. And they are becoming more affordable. “Slowly, over the years, the market has really grown,” says Mike Heidebrink, president of Cheng Concrete. When the company opened in 2002, it catered mostly to well-heeled dot-commers willing to spend more to bring an artisan’s touch to their kitchens. Today, Heidebrink says, Cheng also serves a growing number of skilled do-it-yourselfers who want to shape, mold and install countertops themselves. They can choose the color and lines of their countertops, he says. Once installed and sealed, he says,

Nils Wessell in Brooklyn, New York, says the do-it-yourself movement is also fueling his businesses, in a different way. “This DIY interest in cooking leads to people wanting a suitable surface to chop up meat on,” says Wessell, whose company, Brooklyn Butcher Blocks, makes wooden countertops with enough thickness and durability to be used as cutting boards. Clients include barbeque restaurants as well as home cooks. While Wessell says his handmade countertops are more expensive than factory-made ones, he can make “a sizeable countertop for about a grand,” he says. Of course, no countertop is perfect. Concrete can stain, so it must be sealed properly. Wooden

countertops take a beating from knives, although Wessell says they can be easily maintained with semi-regular sanding. Soapstone, popular for its natural look, has its quirks as well, Izzo says: It weathers over time. “Consumers generally have to accept that idea and know that they want a living finish like that,” he says. Even granite countertops have drawbacks. Some granite releases trace amounts of radon, the radioactive gas. Izzo instead is a fan of quartz. Plant what you need to brew ASSOCIATED PRESS You don’t need a garden to succeed as a home brewer, but growing your own ingredients is a flavorful step up. Much of the creativity involved in crafting a custom-made beer starts with the plants you select. “The modern palate pretty much demands some hops in beer, but beyond that, there’s a lot of choices available,” says Dennis Fisher, an organic farmer from Winterport, Maine. Fisher, who with his brother Joe wrote a popular reference book for beginners, “The Homebrewer’s Garden” (Storey Publishing, 1998), says one of the most satisfying aspects of home brewing is producing some or all of your own ingredients from scratch. “Scratch brewing,” the brothers wrote, “refers to the cultivation, preparation and use of hops, barley, malts and other non-barley grains, and adjuncts ranging from fruits to herbs to vegetables.” Growing your own ingredients ensures that the products are as organic, fresh and unique as possible. Homegrown also is cheaper than store-bought, the Fishers say. The four basic ingredients needed for brewing are malt (malting provides the fermented sugar that yeast feeds on to produce alcohol), hops (reduces spoilage and balances the sugar’s sweetness with a bitter flavor), brewer’s yeast and water (about 90 percent of beer’s content). “Hops are a particularly good (garden) choice because they thrive almost anywhere,” says Dennis Fisher. “They are also a great addition to a landscape — big, attractive columns of greenery.” If the water from your tap tastes good, then it also should taste good in the beer you make, Fisher says. “But if it’s chlorinated, then you need to let it stand overnight to allow the chemicals to outgas before brewing with it.”

Adjuncts, in homebrew speak, are plants used to replace or complement hops to give beers distinctive flavors, odors and colors. “Just about any flower you can eat can be made into a beer,” says Rebecca Kneen, an organic farmer and writer from Sorrento, British Columbia, who wrote about backyard brewing in the new “Groundbreaking Food Gardens,” By Niki Jabbour. “It’s useful to experiment with them all though to determine how much should be used and when they should be added,” Kneen says. Some common and not so common home brewer’s garden adjuncts include: • Herbs: (Bittering) Sage, horehound, gentian, yarrow. (Flavoring) Juniper, rosemary, ginger, oregano, mint, thyme. (Aromatic) Lavender, lemon balm, chamomile.

• Flowers: Nasturtiums, wild roses, scented geranium leaves, daylilies and marigolds. • Vegetables and fruits: Rhubarb, blackberries and elderberries, pumpkin, chili peppers, sorghum, apples. “We like to add spruce tips to some beers,” Fisher says. “It’s more of a wild-gathered than home-grown adjunct that in Colonial times was a hops substitute.” For even “greener” beer, recycle the brewing ingredients and their byproducts, Kneen says. “You can compost them, feed them to pigs and sheep, put some into your chicken feed,” she says. “We use them heavily as mulch … The gray water (relatively clean wastewater) is used for irrigation on our pastures. That’s the bulk of what comes out of our brewery.”

Although glass and screens have eliminated the practical need for shutters, they’re still popular for decoration. “They add another layer of thoughtful detailing to a house,” says Ted Cleary, a landscape architect in Charlotte, N.C. But to get the right look, you still have to consider function when choosing and hanging shutters, experts say. “Beauty in architecture, as with many objects, often stems from seeing a detail that illustrates its purpose,” Cleary says. A pair of shutters can cost anywhere from $100 to more than $1,000. Some tips on choosing the right ones for your home: AP

Size Originally, shutters were used to keep out weather, noise and animals; when closed, they had to cover the whole window. So shutter size is the most important thing to consider, says Lindsay Daniel, a Charlotte architect, who agrees with Cleary that homeowners must “think function first, not decoration.” Make sure the shutters meet and completely cover the window opening. Otherwise, she says, the shutter “looks like a stupid afterthought.” This means that shutters don’t work on double-width or picture windows, says Richard Taylor, an architect and president of RTA Studio in Dublin, Ohio. “To my eye anyway, it looks ridiculous,” he says. And take care about their shape when hanging shutters on arched windows, Cleary adds. “Shutters are perfectly legitimate on arched windows as long as the (closed) shutter covers it,” he says.

Material Shutters are primarily made of wood, composite material or vinyl. Vinyl shutters are typically mounted directly onto the side of the house, which means they break the rule about looking functional, Taylor says.

Hardware

Styles Louvered shutters, made with horizontally slated boards, are probably the most common style in America, Cleary says. When shutters served as the primary window covering, people in hotter climates used louvered ones to allow fresh air into the house. Panel shutters have a traditional look. They are solid pieces that resemble small doors, and are often inset with square or rectangle patterns. They were regularly used on Colonial-era homes in New England and were a good defense against snow and rain. Board and batten shutters are made with three or four vertical boards of the same size connected with narrow horizontal boards. They have a rustic appearance and were often used on country houses or barns. They are the easiest style for do-it-yourselfers to make at home, Cleary says.

Shutters look best when they are hung as though they are going to be opened and closed, Cleary says. That means using hinges and mounting them onto the window casing — not attaching them to the house. Cleary also recommends adding metal tiebacks, sometimes called shutter dogs, to hold open shutters in place. The hardware, including shutter dogs and hinges, can cost up to $100 for a pair of shuttters. “It looks a lot richer. There’s more depth to them when they are not pasted to the (house),” he says.

Be consistent Don’t feel you have to put shutters on every window. It’s better to have some windows without shutters than to put them on windows that are too wide for them. Don’t use a shutter on one side of a window where a door or the corner of the house prevents you from adding its mate. Do consider painting shutters the same color as your front door.
