Window insulating coefficients: Still awake? Q. What are the U value and solar heat gain coefficient requirements for new windows? Chris of LaGrange A. Wow, a complex one here for the uninitiated Chris. Let’s see if I can simplify it. The quality of an insulating material is called the R value, the higher the R value better the insulator. U value is the inverse of the R value — i.e. SQUARE 1/u=R. Clear as mud? CORNERS Good, I piqued your interest. U values are Fred Kreigh typically between .25 and 1.25, the smaller the number the better. If you’re still awake, you drank to much coffee this morning. Current energy code

requires U values be less than .3. This number should be prominently displayed on the sticker of any new window. Now the tough one — solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) is the fraction of radiation admitted both directly and as heat through the window. Short and sweet — it’s an indicator of how warm your cat is going to get lying in the window on a sunny day. Since we are in a northern zone where heating is important, a high SHGC isn’t necessarily bad. If your window has some summer shading to help with air conditioning costs it can be a win. SHGC numbers are between 0-1. Lower numbers allow less heat into the house. Look for a window with SHGC less than .4 if you have no window shading. Still awake — you need a new hobby to occupy your time! There is no SHGC requirement in our current energy code. As long as I’m boring

you let’s talk one more number — air leakage. This is the forgotten little sister of window lingo. If you have a window with greater than .3, you are going to notice the draft of the air moving into your home from around the sealing surfaces of the window. In my opinion, this is just as important as the others. So let’s summarize — all windows are lousy insulators, a really good one might be R-4, as opposed to a good wall assembly at R-25. A high solar heat gain coefficient will keep your cat happy. Windows with large air leakage number are very much like a husband — one leaks cold air, the other hot. Today’s casual decor meets ‘Downton Abbey’ glamour THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Intrigued by the drama and inspired by the sophistication of British aristocrats in “Downton Abbey,” some fans are plotting to bring the series’ style into their own homes, from gilded finishes to opulent upholstery to portrait paintings. “We’ve gone so casual in the last decade in terms of home decor. I think there is a desire to be a little more formal, or a little more glamorous,” says Kristie Barnett, an interior design blogger in Nashville, Tenn. “That doesn’t mean it can’t be familyfriendly.” “Downton Abbey,” in production for its fourth season, features the noble Crawley family “upstairs” and its servants “downstairs” in a sprawling country estate. The characters are struggling to bring the estate and their traditional sensibilities into the 1920s, a time of social and political ferment. Ornate drawing rooms, flowing boudoirs, vibrant gardens and crisp, clean servants’ quarters make the gorgeous backdrop for the PBS Masterpiece melodrama. So how do you bring some of that aristocratic look into a comfortable modern home?

Gilded for glamour One of the simplest ways to achieve the “upstairs” look of “Downton Abbey” is to apply gold metallic paint for a gilded finish on wood furniture, picture frames, mirror edges and other decorative items, including bookends and lamp stands. In her living room, Barnett, who blogs at TheDecorologist.com, used gold paint to make a barley-twist coffee table appear worthy of nobility. Golden candlesticks and a crystal doorknob atop piles of books finish the look. “Gilt was all the rage during the British Edwardian Age,” says Barnett. “And it’s all the rage in my house.”

chaise lounges and Bergere chairs can add a touch of bygone beauty, but you should allow plenty of space for more livable pieces such as a traditional sofa. If you can’t afford new furniture, consider adding silk or damask throw pillows. Tapestries and oriental rugs can be affordable and add the feel of affluence. Check out Etsy.com for “Downton Abbey”-style fabrics and textiles.

Lovely lighting Another easy way to achieve the upstairs style, while keeping things practical and comfortable, is to hang an ornate light fixture or chandelier. Affordable plaster or stencil medallions placed around light fixtures can be another eye-catching element. Or can use candlelight, which will bounce off mirrors, glass and crystal, creating the sort of warm glow that makes the Crawleys’ multi-course dinners look so enticing.

includes opulent upholstery, drapes and wall coverings, says Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan, founder of ApartmentTherapy.com. “People seem to be ready for more and more luxe materials and dramatic finishes,” he says. “Even wallpaper, which was trending modern, is back to classic floral patterns and English traditionalism, but often with a bit of a twist.” Painted walls are darker, with a gloss finish, experts say. You can create the uppercrust feel with bold jewel tones, including emerald and sapphire. Also in the traditional “Downton Abbey” palette, says Mary Lawlor, manager of color marketing for Kelly-Moore Paints, are refreshing pastels and creams, One of the mansion’s expansive drawing rooms, for example, features a pale green wallpaper further softened with richly upholstered furniture in a mix of rose and classic ivory. The British nobility takes its heritage seriously, and there are painted portraits and landscapes throughout the show’s castle. If you’re at a rummage sale or consignment shop, pick up similar art and create a small grouping on one wall. You don’t have to be descended from these somber-looking subjects to bring their sophistication home.

There are pros and cons to having an open floor plan METRO CREATIVE Open floor plans have evolved to be the floor plan of choice in new homes and current home renovations. Turn on a home renovation show, and you’re likely to see eager homeowners knocking down walls to open the kitchen to the family room. Walls have become anathema to homeowners. There are many supporters of the open floor plan, particularly those who entertain frequently or like to keep an eye on children throughout the house. Although open floor plans are touted, there are plenty of people who have never been enamored with having all of their rooms flowing into one. There also are some people who prefer a different style. For those who are not fans of the open floor plan, blame the excess of the 1980s for their inception. In homes built in the 1960s and 1970s, rooms were compartmentalized and isolated for specific activities. During the 1980s, an era of “bigger is better,” when entertaining was widely popular among homeowners, designers noticed that many homeowners preferred an open floor plan in which rooms merged into one another, creating the illusion of more space. These floor plans also enable people to be in separate rooms and still interact with one another across the space. A home’s floor plan largely depends on the preference of the homeowner. There are many advantages to having an open floor plan versus one that is more compartmentalized. Here is a look at some of the pros and cons. PRO: Open floor plans can be safer for parents of young children. If the home opens up with the living spaces branching off from the kitchen, parents can keep an eye on children while the parents prepare dinner. It also eliminates the number of places that kids can hide and get into mischief. CON: Privacy is reduced in a home with few walls. Much in the way that an open floor plan enables children to be seen from every angle, it also enables you to be seen — and all of your belongings as well. There’s also no place to retreat to if you need a minute

to collect yourself when entertaining. You’re on display unless you retreat to the bathroom. PRO: Entertaining can be easier in a home with an open floor plan because hosts and hostesses are not separated from their guests or holed up in the kitchen the entire time. An open space enables everyone to mingle and conversations to flow. CON: Those who like to host events without showing guests all of their dirty dishes or secrets of the kitchen may dislike an open floor plan. PRO: Light can flow effectively through an open space, minimizing dark rooms and reducing the need to install more windows. Light in and of itself can help a home feel more spacious. CON: While light can flow easily, so can sound. Noises through the house may be amplified. A student doing homework in the dining room may be

disturbed by the television blaring in the family room. Talking on the phone or even finding a quiet nook to read a book may be challenging. PRO:Open floor plans allow for more family time together in one space than a home with a more compartmentalized layout. CON: People who are collectors or who have a lot of furniture or accent items may find that open floor plans do not work well with this type of design mantra. PRO: Because several rooms run into one another, color choices for walls and furnishings in a home with an open floor plan can be limited and cohesive, making choices easier. CON: On the flip side, those who want to incorporate different color schemes and eclectic styles may have difficulty deciding on where to “end” rooms or how to co-mingle furniture.

Hydrangeas, popular flowering shrubs Hydrangeas are very popular flowering shrubs for landscapes whether it is in a shrub border, in mixed plantings with perennials or a specimen flowering shrub. Hydrangeas are the workhorses in the garden. They come mainly in shrub form from miniature to large shrubs and feature showy white, pink or blue flowers. They KNOWLEDGE produce beautiful petals TO GROW that provide color and beauty through all summer and into the fall. Gail Daniels Flowers and stems can be cut for fresh arrangements or after blooming, hydrangeas can be easily dried for flower arrangements. Pick blooms on a clear day in late summer and hang to dry. Several species of hydrangea are grown in our landscapes and in general they all share similar growing requirements. Hydrangeas prefer a soil that is consistently moist, well drained and well supplemented with a good

quantity of organic material such as compost or well-aged manure. You can fertilize in early spring with complete granular fertilizer. They are not very drought tolerant and will not do well in sandy soils and generally need about one inch of water a week. Apply as a deep soaking. During very hot and dry weather, they may need up to 2 inches of water per week. Soaker hoses or drip irrigation work well. They keep the soil moist and the foliage dry. Hydrangeas can be grown in either full sun or light dappled shade keeping them from full afternoon sun. Pruning hydrangeas is a little more complicated. There are many different types of hydrangeas and many require different methods of pruning. Depending on the type of hydrangea you have, it may bloom on new or old wood. The best time to prune hydrangea is after they flower and before they set buds for next year. On some species, you can prune very heavily and it won’t affect next year’s blooms because they bloom on new growth. Some varieties bloom on old wood and if you prune in early spring or late fall, you will cut off the bloom buds for next year’s flowers.

If your plant doesn’t bloom, it may not be getting enough light or it is isn’t hardy enough this area. In some older varieties, the flower buds freeze too hard in winter to bloom in the spring. You can try moving your plant to a sheltered location. If this doesn’t work, you may have to replace it with a hardier variety. To change the color of your hydrangea for most big leaf hydrangea cultivars, blue flowers will be produced in acidic soil (pH 5.5) and lower. Neutral to alkaline soils (pH 6.5 )and higher will usually produce pink flowers. Between pH 5.5 and pH 6.5, the flowers will usually be purple. When Renee Pedro bought a house with mid-century dcor, she decided to embrace the look. Drawing inspiration from the 1963 Philco oven in her kitchen, she began hunting for towels and table linens with a mod ’60s vibe to complement the appliance. “That oven was my style. My thing,” said Pedro, of Philadelphia. She was disappointed by the lack of choices, and in 2009 began looking for a way to create her own textiles to decorate the kitchen. “I couldn’t find something that fit my aesthetic, so I decided to make it,” she said. After a year of looking online, she found a company that would allow her to design her own fabric. Now she runs her own online business, Crashpaddesigns.com, selling tea towels, pillow cases and table linens in mod, bright, geometric or flowered patterns that she designs herself. Many companies have begun to offer consumers the chance to create custom fabrics and wallpapers. Advances in printing have made it more affordable to create small runs, and to make high-quality products faster and cheaper, said Aaron Kirsch, president of Astek Wallcovering Inc. in Van Nuys, Calif. He sells directly to consumers via his company’s website, Designyourwall.com. The company also makes custom products for the fashion, hospitality and motion picture industries. Demand for the custom products has been steadily rising, Kirsch said. “Custom wall covering … has gone ballistic,” he said. Homeowners can create their own wall covering for about $6.50 a square foot, he said. Custom fabrics run about $18 to $30 a yard, said Rysa Pitner, founder of Fabric on Demand in Los Angeles. Custom options appeal to “individuals who love to author their own stuff,” she said. You can upload photos, original artwork or computer-generated designs on her company’s website, Fabriconde-

mand.com. Some manufacturers have designers who help customers develop the look they want. Do-it-yourself designers can usually preview the order online or order a sample piece. It normally takes less than a month for orders to be processed. The websites also have a wide variety of premade patterns available. Nile Johnson of Nile Johnson Interior Design in Kennett Square, Pa., said custom pieces help his firm accomplish its goal of creating spaces that reflect a client’s personality. “It really helps the interior show and breathe who they are,” he said. “It’s not just pretty. It’s not just functional. It really tells their story.” Johnson has used the custom printing process to create a window shade depicting a child’s favorite story book. He is currently creating wallpaper that corresponds to a client’s checkered dishes. Creating rolls of wallpaper for an accent wall or producing yards of fabric to make curtains, bedding or furniture covering allows homeowners to create layers of design that contribute to the look they are after, added Los Angeles designer

Mildew starts with few little spots, then spreads WASHINGTON (AP) — It may start with a couple of small dark spots on the grout where the shower stall meets the tiled wall. A few days later, they multiply. Mildew. “For most people it’s just kind of an ugly pain. Their bathroom gets these black stains,” said Ken Collier, editor-in-chief of The Family Handyman. For others, though, “it’s an allergen, like cat hair, dog hair,” he said. If it’s not removed, it can result in respiratory problems or other allergy symptoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Mold and mildew, which the Federal Emergency Management Agency calls “mold in early stage,” can grow on a wide range of surfaces as long as moisture is present, and they can give your house a musty smell. “It’s an indication of dampness, like in bathrooms that are not ventilated very well,” said Kathie Birenbaum, who works in households at Strosniders Hardware Store in Bethesda, Md. “Molds can gradually destroy the things they grow on,” the Environmental Protection Agency says in a pamphlet for consumers on its website. “You can prevent damage to your home and furnishings, save money and avoid potential health problems by controlling moisture and eliminating mold growth.” It’s important to do both — control the moisture and clean up the mold — to keep it from growing back, the EPA says. Cleaning large areas — more than 10 square feet, the EPA says — might require a contractor trained in mold removal. For smaller areas, it can be a do-it-yourself job. Frequently, the bathroom is the first place that a homeowner or apartment dweller might notice mildew. “A lot of people take a shower, get out of the shower” and go on their way, Collier said. “Basically, they’ve left all this water on the walls and floor of the shower and surprise, surprise, the bathroom is damp and you find mildew growing on the grout.” Often, condensation — not a leak — is the source of the moisture, Collier said. “The bathroom fan is a big part of

keeping the moisture level down in the bathroom,” he said. “If there isn’t one, put one in. If there’s a small one, put in a bigger one or use it more.” Opening the bathroom window also helps, as does more frequent cleaning, according to the EPA. Collier also suggests using a squeegee to wipe down the shower walls. There are many products available for cleaning mildew and mold, but homeowners also can mix their own. A bleach solution that CDC says should be “no more than 1 cup of bleach in 1 gallon of water” can be used to clean and kill mildew. “For the typical homeowner, they would scrub it down really well with bleach water and then they should seal the grout, seal it once a year or so to keep it water tight,” Collier said. Wear protective gloves while cleaning. The CDC also recommends protective eyewear. If you can’t get rid of the mildew with bleach, you might have to dig out the grout and replace it, Collier said. For those looking for an environmentally friendlier alternative to bleach, Collier said one of the products that mold experts recommend is Concrobium, which also can

be used as a fog if a whole room is affected. It’s not just bathrooms where you’ll find mold or mildew. “Sometimes people find it in closets where there’s limited air circulation, and where maybe there’s a cool wall and it’s humid,” Collier said. Or there could be condensation around heating ducts, and you’ll find a moldy patch on the ceiling. Moisture from roof leaks also can lead to growth of mold and mildew. If you paint over mildew, the paint likely will peel. Birenbaum says there special primers that inhibit mold growth. Mona Weingarten of Washington, D.C., wasn’t aware that there was mold in her house. She didn’t see anything or smell anything. But when one of the tiles on the bathroom floor became loose, she called a contractor to fix it and he discovered mold. Mold later was discovered elsewhere in her house. Weingarten, who has severe allergies, developed a fungal infection in her sphenoid sinus and had to have surgery. After spending tens of thousands of dollars on remediation and related costs, she now has an environmental engineer test her house every six months and remove any mold spores.
