Fair strives for affordable, family fun

Popular attractions from years past will return for the 2014 Allen County Fair, which runs July 22-27.

Fireworks will be set off at dusk on opening night Tuesday. A parade will wind through the fairgrounds at 7 p.m. that same evening. “And another thing that used to be a fan favorite that we haven’t had in a few years is the donkey race. It’s very comical,� said Michelle Love, the Fairgrounds Board secretary, who also directs the fair queen pageant and updates the schedule on the website.

FAIR from Page A1 the best weather we’ve ever had,” Hammond said. “It was warm and sunny and nice, but it wasn’t 90 or a hundred.

It was one of those picture perfect years, and it would be great if we could do that again. But you get what you get and you go with it.”

Hammond, who has been part of the fairgrounds board for about 20 years, said attendance had been hovering around the 25,000 mark for the past eight years. With last year’s Blue Ribbon weather, the gate was 34,000.

There were other factors to consider, he said. “We went with a different promoter and we had a lot more things for people to see, more commercial people in.”

“We have a lot of special events. We have something almost every single night,” Love said.

That includes pig wrestling Wednesday night, the 4x4 truck pull Friday night, the demolition derby Saturday night and the mud bogs challenge for standard trucks on Sunday.

For the first time, she said, a related activity will be held in advance of the fair. “We’re doing a race Saturday evening [July 19], which is totally new to Fort Wayne,” Love said. “No other organization does a night race. It will be at dusk, and then we’ll have a concert.”

The 7 p.m. Tuesday parade will feature 4-H clubs, school bands, and floats representing churches, political groups or other interests. “We’ll set up at Byron Health Center so the people over there will benefit from it,” Hammond said.

Friday night features the truck pull. “That’s also our Oldies night and our car show in front of the fairgrounds, around the activities stage,” he said. Biff and the Cruisers will entertain. Anyone is welcome to show a car, but most of the cars will be from the ’70s or ’80s or older.

probably double what we had these last two years,” he said. “We’re hoping that’s a draw.”

Hammond has been involved with the fair since the early ’90s and still has one son in 4-H. He and other fair board members have been talking about the 25th year for quite a while. “We wanted to do something special to celebrate,” he said. That will include giveaways during the week. “And then at the pull strip events we’re probably going to have stuff we’ll throw out [to the crowd]. And then one day we’ll have 200 people get free fans, seat cushions, can koozies. And then also to celebrate the 25th we’ve made a throw or blanket that has some of the things from over the years. And we will sell a basket similar to a bucket that has a lid on it and has a liner so you can use it for a cookie jar.”

Though this year’s Fair No. 25 has a special number, Love and Hammond say every summer’s celebration is special.

“The fair is definitely a fun, family event, and we strive really hard to make sure it’s affordable for the family to attend,” Love said. “We are the home of Allen County 4-H, so not only are people coming out and getting a really great midway and fair food, we also have all the 4-H projects, all the things that 4-H’ers work toward all year round.”

Pageant to pick Miss Allen County 2014

Allen County Fair queens from years past will have another moment on stage to celebrate the 25th year of the Allen County Fairgrounds.

The pageant will take place at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 20, at Carroll High School, 3701 Carroll Road.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Tickets are $5, with children 5 and under admitted free. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trying to do a lot of different things to celebrate,â&#x20AC;? said Michelle Love, who is not only the pageant director but the fairgrounds board secretary. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So this year weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trying to get as many past queens as possible to join us again.â&#x20AC;?

That number will include two former Miss Allen County and Miss Indiana State Fair queens, who have been conďŹ rmed as judges.

The winner will represent Allen County at the Miss Indiana State Fair Queen pageant in January 2015.

The January pageant represents a major change for the state title, said Love, who is a former Miss Allen County and a third runner-up at the state pageant. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It gives the county fair queens more time to prepare,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot

The 2014 queen will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship and her ďŹ rst runner-up a $450 scholarship. The queen and her court will win prizes such as Vera Bradley handbags, jewelry, and more. And the queen will wear a tiara and a sash as she hands out trophies at livestock shows and other events during the Allen County Fair, July 22-27.

The county pageant also will serve to introduce contestants for the Little Miss Allen County Fair program. Girls ages 2 to 15 will compete in three age groups. That event is a fundraiser for the fair. The winners will be crowned at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July

Last year, she completed the Allen County Fair just in time to head to Ball State. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had just moved into school and the day I moved in I went to Indianapolis for the State Fair for three days and then had to come back and start school,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think it is a great thing for teenage girls to get involved in pageants,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of people have wrong ideas about pageants because of the media.

“The youth services program here is probably one of the closest to my own heart,” said David A. Nelson, president and CEO of the League for the Blind & Disabled.

“When you can influence how kids develop, you’ve got a pretty good shot at having an impact,” he said.

The League is directing income from the Cooking Blind fundraiser to the youth program, which serves clients with significant disabilities, from birth to age 21.

“We’re serving kids primarily from low-income families, almost exclusively,” he said.

“We have very few resources for it, and so we have to subsidize this single program to the tune

“This fundraiser helps cover that gap in funding for that program. And that’s pretty common,” Nelson said.

In an interview, Nelson shared his thoughts on the League’s history, its overall mission, and the youth services in particular.

“We’re sending kids from low-income families to camps all over the county, taking care of their fees because the family is not in a real good spot to do that,” he said. “The goal for the camping component is to get the kids out into what other kids are doing. Not segregated programs, not segregated camps — we have lots of those. But kids with disabilities often don’t have the chance to just hang out with kids from their own neighborhood at camp.”

Families learn from the experiences of other families, he said. “We’re connecting kids and families with each other. So if those are the experts, they need opportunities to talk to each other,” he said.

Nelson applies the client-as-expert philosophy to the League’s overall mission.

He has been with the League for 24 years.

“And what’s kept me here is I just like the way this organization sees the world and thinks. It’s different,” he said. “I tell people there’s a very thick and rich culture here and it just resonates with me.”

“Our model is we look at the folks we serve and we understand that those folks are truly the experts in what’s going on, whether you’re deaf or blind or in a wheelchair, you know what life is like and what life needs to be and what needs to change for folks in that situation.

Don’t talk to me. They’re the experts. Talk to them,” he said. “So here the expert is the people we’re serving, and we’re the help. And I like that. I think that’s the right way

to do it.”

That’s why qualified people with disabilities make up 70 percent of the staff, he said, and why a majority of the board of directors are people with disabilities.

He said common attitudes toward those with disabilities range from pity to hero worship, and both are negatives.

As an example, he listed the response to a blind person crossing a street. “They learned that skill. They were taught it by highly skilled people.

But the fact is people cross streets every day,” he said. “So why do we single that out, when there are so many other things that people who are blind contribute, or people who are deaf can do to contribute, or people who use wheelchairs contribute? Why do we focus on those everyday things that everybody does?”

“There are very few things that people with disabilities can’t do with the right knowledge, skills, equipment and training,” Nelson said.

The League for the Blind & Disabled traces its history to 1946, when the Community Chest explored the best way to serve the blind. The League was incorporated in 1951.

An interim group brought Helen Keller to Fort Wayne in 1948.

“Nobody here knew that. We had lost our history,” said Nelson, who took his current position in 1990. “We were moving stuff and cleaning stuff and we found all the original newspaper articles from back in the ’40s and ’50s, in a box in the basement,” he said.

“We had lost that. No one even knew we had done that, and we found it in a box in the basement in 1990. And for me it was a treasure, to get that piece of our history back.”

In early July, home chefs participated in a cook-off that advanced four chefs to the live cook-off. Ha and two other judges will choose the winner, who will win a cash prize of $1,000.

Eggeman had some advice for the 48 chefs who entered the July cook-off. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be nervous. Everyone competing is a home cook,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We know itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not necessarily going to be easy, and everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to have a few problems. Even when the professionals do it, they have issues. When youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re being timed and you want to make your best dish, all the pressure makes it less easy than when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re cooking in your own home. But thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s so much fun

about it.â&#x20AC;?

The Academy of Arts, a professional, Christian group from Taylors, S.C., employs professional stage lights, music, sound effects, costumes, props and multi-image techniques to present

biblical, historical, patriotic and moral themes on the stage.

Nicole Chavers Stratton compiled and adapted the drama for the stage. It contains a series of stories focusing on the lives of hymn writers and dramatically portrays each story. The program will be 60-75 minutes in length.

ďŹ rst started out I did it to lower my cholesterol, and I went to a big-box store and bought a quote-unquote pair of running shoes for about $45, and I thought there was nothing to this.â&#x20AC;?

His quest for more scientiďŹ c footwear soon led him to Three Rivers Running Co., 4039 N. Clinton St. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was familiar with the manager,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They ďŹ tted me with a pair of shoes and for the most part Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been running pain-free ever since.â&#x20AC;?

Like hundreds of other athletes, Clendenen is chasing his own ďŹ tness goals toward the Fort4Fitness Fall Festival, Sept.

26 and 27 in downtown Fort Wayne. Sporting goods stores such as Three Rivers are helping the runners to train. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I ďŹ rst started running, I could run about three miles, and I thought â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;That didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t kill me,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;? Clendenen said.

After about six months he decided to take on a 10k â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the River City Rat Race. Then he began to consider the Fort4Fitness half-marathon. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I tried it and got hooked, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been running it ever since,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Last year I had some back issues and wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t able to participate,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was disappointed in breaking my string of half-marathons.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m slowly ramping my miles back up, and I

hope to be in this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s [race],â&#x20AC;? he said.

Clendenen also serves on the board of the Fort Wayne Track Club, which assists with pace groups at Fort4Fitness. He said someone will hold up a sign, and runners with similar goals will keep pace with one another.

That helped him to set his personal best time in a half-marathon. Now he hopes to return and to help others reach their goals, too. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you have a reasonable goal you want to gain, that pace group can be very helpful,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m looking to do my ďŹ rst full marathon next year and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m looking for a pace group.â&#x20AC;?

During his off year, he volunteered as a course marshal. He made sure runners followed the course, and he cheered them on. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just one of the volunteer opportunities,â&#x20AC;? he said.

The Fort4Fitness just keeps growing and growing, he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a great marathon for the community, and the half-marathon just keeps getting more popular.â&#x20AC;?

Clendenen has applied his enthusiasm for running through the New Haven Parks Department. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have four running events through the parks, and being a runner I work with the local high schools, promoting that as a lifestyle,â&#x20AC;? he said.

CertiďŹ ed coach Mike Else also instructs workouts at 6 p.m. each Tuesday night at the Woodside Middle School track, and Saturday morning runs at city parks. Fischer said he has been passionate about cars and the automotive industry his whole life, restoring cars in high school along with his older brother, Ralph Fischer.

University offers summer Jesters The Jesters, a University of Saint Francis performing arts program for people with disabilities, is offering summer sessions on the following Tuesdays: July 29, Aug. 5, 12, 19 and 26 and Sept.

Each spring, the Jesters program culminates in an original multimedia performance.

Jesters exists to enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities by engaging them in the creative arts. The program helps them develop self-expression, self-esteem, socialization and other life skills, while providing learning opportunities to the USF and local communities. It is funded in part by a grant from the AWS Foundation.

In a news release, the ranch said the camp and platform comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act. Dare to Dream Youth Ranch serves Fort Wayne and the surrounding area by offering children the opportunity to experience a horse ranch. The ranch rescues and rehabilitates abused and neglected horses and integrates them into the ranch program.

In addition to assisting children with disabilities, the ramp will serve as the loading platform for all children who ride at the ranch.

I&M project to displace some White Swan tenants A portion of White Swan Plaza at 9100 Lima Road will be demolished to make way for Indiana Michigan Power to increase its power supply to the north side of Fort Wayne.

Bill Bean, whose company Hanning & Bean manages the older, neighborhood shopping center, said he hopes the tenants affected by the power line project will be relocated within the center.

The shopping center contains about 73,000 square feet of leasable space. It was anchored by

Dollar General, but that store has closed. Other tenants include White Swan Do it Best Hardware, White Swan Plaza Barber Shop and Edgertonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Travel. As of this spring, about 5,600 square feet of space was vacant, according to commercial real estate website, LoopNet. The expansion of power

Healthy Times Parkview recruits police

Northeast Indiana will see a brand-new police agency begin operations in the coming weeks.

Not one that serves a community or county, but one sworn to specifically protect Parkview Health.

The nonprofit health system is forming its own police department in an effort to provide a higher level of security at Parkview’s hospitals in the region. But unlike traditional police forces, law enforcement would only be a small part of the overall mission for these police officers.

the level that we need to take action, we would, and they would be certified and trained to do that,” said Tom Rhoades, Parkview’s director of security and a chief architect of the initiative.

“Ninety-five percent of their job is going to be customer service and providing a safe and secure environment for the patients, the visitors and all the co-workers.”

He plans to have 22 sworn officers in the department when it’s fully implemented. They would be dispersed among the Parkview Regional Medical Center campus off Dupont Road, Parkview Hospital Randallia, and the four community hospitals in Huntington, Kendallville, Columbia City and LaGrange.

A deputy chief will oversee each of the sites.

He said some of the new officers are already certified, while others have to undergo training at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Plainfield.

The hiring process is moving a little slower than Rhoades would like. He had hoped to be done by April, but he said it was important to be deliberate and find the right people for the job.

Rhodes is looking for candidates with law-enforcement experience and training, CPR training and important personality qualities allowing them to balance police duties with working in a health-care

environment that requires good interpersonal skills.

“With every police officer, you’re looking for good moral character, integrity, honesty.

But beyond that, we’re digging into, ‘What kind of heart do you have?

Do you have a heart for service to others above all else?’” he said. “It’s really a unique blend to find the right person for these roles.”

The screening process for Parkview officer candidates is similar to the Fort Wayne Police Department’s, including background investigations and psychological evaluations. The candidates also face evaluation by two separate interview panels, one composed of Parkview security officials and the other made up of hospital leaders.

The new officers will join Parkview’s staff of approximately 90 security personnel, though with one key difference: The officers will be armed, hence the careful scrutiny and training.

He feels having such an armed force for the health network can mitigate trouble at the facilities by stopping altercations or crimes. The officers are authorized to make arrests and transport suspects to local jails.

They’ll also be ready to face serious and potentially violent emergencies, such as the possibility of a gunman attacking one of the hospital campuses.

Nickerson told the audience that it had long been his goal to acquire a theater organ for Trinity.

“Well it’s taken a long time to find one,” he said, “and then once we found one and got it here it had some major problems in storage.”

A leak from a hot water pipe drenched many of the organ’s components being stored in the church basement. Eventually, some replacement pipes and parts were found and incorporated. According to the concert program, “Among the ‘newer’ additions is a set of pipes that were installed originally at Olympia Stadium in Detroit in or around 1934.”

The Trinity organ came from the home of Dr. John and Betty Polsley, of Urbana, Ohio. After their deaths, their son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Steve and Barbara Polsley, donated the organ to the church.

Nickerson supervised the mechanical details and sought private funding for the restoration. Scott Smith Pipe Organs of Lansing, Mich., was hired to move and re-install the organ at the church.

More than 1,830 electrical connections were required. “Lots of folks have done lots of things,” he said.

Nickerson, of New Haven, also spoke of a friend, Byron Fogt, of Fort Wayne. “Byron had a theater organ in his home, a three-manual instrument,” he said, “and it just so happened that about three, four, five blocks away from him was a young fellow who was very interested in the theater organ, and would come over and practice a great deal, and that young man happens to be Mark Herman.”

Nickerson said he heard good reports on Herman before he finally got to hear him play. “Byron had arranged for Mark to play for the Schantz [Organ

Co.] people when they were redoing the organ in the nave,” he said. “And I was completely blown away.”

Herman was named the American Theatre Organ Society’s Organist of the Year in 2012, making him the youngest person to receive that honor. He studied classical piano with Christine Freeman of Fort Wayne, and later earned a degree in theater arts/ management from DePaul University in Chicago. He recently moved to the Los Angeles area, where he is a voicing specialist and tonal consultant for Allen Organs.

More FWCS students to receive free lunches

The Fort Wayne Community Schools will provide meals at no cost to elementary and middle school students beginning this school year. The School Board approved the plan June 9.

While families will no longer need to submit an application for free or reduced-price meals, they will need to apply for free textbooks, if eligible. Information on this process will be sent to families in July. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We believe this will be a great beneďŹ t for our students and their families,â&#x20AC;? Superintendent Wendy Robinson said.

Students in elementary and middle schools, and all students at Ward Education Center, will be able to eat breakfast and lunch at no cost daily. A la carte items will still be available for purchase at the middle schools, and students may continue to buy extra milk through their prepaid meal account or with cash.

The new beneďŹ t is available to families as part of the Community Eligibility Provision offered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to the National School Lunch Program.

participate because more than 40 percent of students are directly certiďŹ ed by the state for beneďŹ ts, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. Because high school participation in the school lunch program is lower than in elementary and middle schools, it is not currently ďŹ nancially feasible to offer meals at no cost to high school students, the district said in a news release. FWCS will re-evaluate this decision at the end of the 2014-15 school year.

Science Central gets $40,000 The Lincoln Financial Foundation has awarded Science Central a $40,000 grant to continue its informal science education programs and operation of the centerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Lincoln Financial Foundation Demonstration Theater.

The theater is the home for Science Centralâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s internal demonstration programs, providing a setting where school students and visitors of all ages can participate in hands-on science demonstrations and activities. Three stores to give backpacks Three Fort Wayne locations of The Cellular Connection will give away backpacks and school supplies as part of a national campaign.

More than 350 participating TCC stores across the United States invite families to bring their children to the stores between noon and 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, to pick up a backpack filled with pencils, paper, a pencil box, folders, glue and more. One backpack per child present will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. The participating stores in Fort Wayne are at 10132 Maysville Road; 5956 Stellhorn Road, Suite

C; and 6404 W. Jefferson Blvd., Suite A. Each participating TCC store will donate between 75 and 300 backpacks. All leftover backpacks will be donated to local schools.

The Cellular Connection, a Verizon premium wireless retailer, will donate 100,000 backpacks nationwide through its School Rocks Backpack Giveaway.

Last year, the company donated 60,000 backpacks.

In 2013, the National Retail Federation predicted the average person with children in grades K-12 would spend $86 on school supplies.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a dogâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s world â&#x20AC;&#x201D; about a hundred feet square. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Everybodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s walking dogs in town, lots of people, but they had no place to run and roam,â&#x20AC;? said Dan Holmes, the president of the Huntertown Park Foundation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And we provided a place for them.â&#x20AC;?

Dogs can enjoy the wide open spaces and the canine playground equipment of the new Huntertown dog park while dog owners enjoy the cost: Free. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The ďŹ rst phase of it is ďŹ nished,â&#x20AC;? Holmes said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our hope is that we can build a second one and then have a division of dogs by weight.â&#x20AC;? The ďŹ rst phase measures a hundred feet on each side, with a 15-by-20 staging area. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Then you get your doggy bags, etc., and then go into the open area and then itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s off-leash,â&#x20AC;? Holmes said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a posted set of rules, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s open to the public, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all free,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We just ask them to clean up after their dog and observe the rules, and everybody have fun.â&#x20AC;?

The park continues to take shape. Parking for about 10 vehicles is available at a stoned-covered area along Woods Road, with a concrete trail leading to the dog park.

Visitors should not follow the construction entrance through adjoining private property along Old Lima Road. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So far itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been well received and everybodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s enjoying it,â&#x20AC;? Holmes said.

Contributions made it all possible. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In fact I got a contribution today from a husky-malamute group that somebody from Fort Wayne contacted, and I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know where theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re located but they originated in Littleton, Colo., and they sent us a check for $750,â&#x20AC;? Holmes said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They had a silent auction and they thought they were going to raise at least $500, and they ended up raising $750, and we got that check today.â&#x20AC;?

Nutro Co. awarded the Friends of Huntertown Parks a $2,000 grant, through its Room to Run Dog Park Appreciation Project. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Without that the dog park probably would not have gotten done,â&#x20AC;? said Steve Fortriede, the parks groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s treasurer who applied for the grant.

Fortriede said in a Nutro news release. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We now have the opportunity to extend those beneďŹ ts not only to adults and children, but to our canine friends as well.â&#x20AC;?

The group plans to complete the amphitheatre and other park improvements this season.

With the return of construction-friendly weather, the group completed horseshoe pits and gaga pits. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Israeli dodge ball,â&#x20AC;?

Holmes explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the next week or so weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be ďŹ nishing the amphitheatre,â&#x20AC;? Holmes said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have a milelong walk path now thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seven feet wide. We have the dog park in. We have one picnic area, a second one will go in here shortly. And then we have two pavilions going up in the next couple weeks.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re investigating restrooms, and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re looking at a baseball diamond, volleyball and basketball. All scheduled in Phase 1, this summer into the fall.â&#x20AC;?

Winter means skiing for the Elizondo family of Fort Wayne. So does summer.

Anya Elizondo, who just completed eighth grade at Woodside Middle School in Aboite Township, is spending three weeks in Mount Hood, Oregon, at a summer camp led by Olympic Gold medalist Ted Ligety and Olympic Silver medalist Andrew Weibrecht. She also is working with World Cup technical coaches.

Aiden Elizondo, who just completed his junior year at Homestead High School, is a counselor at the Ligety-Weibrecht ski camp. He is recovering from a knee injury, which required surgery.

opportunities. “I think they both still have a long-term goal of making the U.S. Ski Team,” James said. The family realizes that “those are long shots,” in James’ words. Still, the effort continues. Both Anya and Aiden look forward to skiiing in college. “It’s

a late maturing sport,” James said.

Older brother Emmett, who recently graduated from Homestead, coaches at Holiday Valley Resort in western New York state. Emmett also raced until he was about 13 or 14, his father said.

the University of Colorado. “He will just enjoy skiing from this time on,” James said.

The two younger racers withdraw from Southwest Allen County Schools from winter through spring break, and study where they train and race.

“I stay here in Fort Wayne and drive on weekends to western New York,” James said. They bought a second home, where Mary Ellen lives with the racers during the ski season.

“It gives them a little bit of a jump,” James said.

“The older ones ski all over the East through the winter.”

Aiden takes his classes online. Anya also will take her high school classes online after being home-schooled in middle school. They train on the snow from 9 a.m. until noon, have lunch, study, and then train again in the evening.

Anya represented the United States in the United States Ski and Snowboard Association U14 Can-Ams in Sugarloaf, Maine, in April.

invited to compete in the Canadian U18 National Championships. Having recovered from knee surgery, he sustained a shoulder injury in a race and also re-injured the knee, requiring a second surgery.

James started racing in college. Mary Ellen took up skiing after they were married. The kids caught the skiing bug early, James said. “That wasn’t the intent originally, but once it got started we moved operations east to provide more opportunity for them.”

“And as the kids got stronger and more competitive, we chose to give them the opportunity to train daily. And we were pleased that we had the opportunity to do that,” James said.

Her season started last September when she was selected to join 19 other female athletes at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, N.Y. Other honors continued through the winter and spring. She was placed on the United States team for the USSA U14 Can-Am Championships in Sugarloaf. These races paired the top 30 girls from the Rocky Mountain, Central and Eastern divisions of USSA against the top 30 girls from Canada’s Eastern three provinces.

Anya placed 16th overall, including first among the New York girls and eighth among the U.S. girls.

Her brother Aiden placed 12th in the International Ski Federation slalom race in December in Sugarbush, Vt. He competed against racers from the United States, Canada, Austria, Great Britain, Israel, Italy, Japan and Switzerland. He continued racing until a season-ending knee injury on Jan. 3.
