It’s that most wonderful time of the year! As we near the culmination of the holiday season, with the celebration of the birth of Christ, we share with you today messages from a variety of clergy from the four-county area. Area ministers and pastors have shared their special thoughts for the Christmas season. Through their words, they have provided us with a variety of thoughts and prayers for Christmas. Please give these columns a read
because we believe they will help you reflect on the true meaning of Christmas and all of the joy that it brings. There’s also a handy guide to upcoming Christmas services that is provided in conjunction with the advertising messages many of our churches have presented. Invite someone to your table this Christmas Christmas is a wonderful time of year! As I get older I find that I’m more reflective during this season. My daughter keeps asking to listen to Christmas music when we’re driving around on errands and to and from appointments. There are many songs that come on the radio MINISTER that make me think to my childhood BRIAN M. back (Silent Night, I’ll Be WALTER Home for Christmas… South Milford to name two). They make me think of my Church of Christ grandparents, and family who are no longer with us; I wish they were still alive. I think back to the wonderful memories those relationships provided. I must be getting old and emotional because I get a lump in my throat as I think of those happy times. My favorite memories of Christmas are sitting around my grandparents table with all the family…laughing,
•
debating, telling stories…sharing in community. Today I realize that it’s my job to carry that sense of community on for my kids… and someday they will do the same for their kids. It makes me sad to know there are so many who have never experienced that type of community, or that there are so many who no longer get to be at the table of community. Rather, in loneliness they sit desperately longing for it… especially during the holidays. We have an epidemic on our hands: loneliness. We live in a culture where hospitality and community have been replaced with the artificial community of Facebook, Pinterest, and Snap Chat. That’s why I implore you…invite someone to your table this Christmas season. A British medical doctor named Ishani Kar-Purkayastha shared a story about his interaction with Doris, an 82-yearold hospital patient. Two days before Christmas, Doris seemed healthy and ready for discharge. But for some reason she kept complaining about inexplicable health issues. Dr. Kar-Purkayastha wrote: “Yesterday it was her arm that was hurting, before that her hip. Truth is, Doris

is an incredibly healthy 82-year-old, and we can’t find anything. I have no doubt that it will be the same today.” When the X-rays came back normal, he told Doris that he would have to stick to the plan of sending her home. Doris looked down at the floor and quietly said, “I don’t want to go home …. It’s just that I’m all alone and there are so many hours in the day.” Then after a long pause, she sighed and asked, “Doctor, can you give me a cure for loneliness?” Dr. Kar-Purkayastha reflected on this incident: “I wish I could say yes. I wish I could prescribe her some antidepressants and be satisfied that I had done my best, but the truth is she’s not clinically depressed. It’s just that she has been left behind by a world that no longer revolves around her, not even the littlest bit. There are thousands like her, men and women … for whom time stands empty as they wait in homes full of silence …. They are no longer coveted by a society addicted to youth ….” Doris is alone, and it brings home the truth of an epidemic that we have on our hands—an epidemic of loneliness. The most difficult part is that I don’t know
how to solve this, although I wish I could. For now, I simply retract my diagnoses. Sheepishly, I insist that Doris spends her Christmas this year on the ward, and I can see her mood lift. But as I steel myself for the inevitable influx of unwanted grandparents whom I know will arrive, I cannot help but wonder how it is that things could have gone so badly wrong. There may not be an easy answer for loneliness, but I think I could offer a start…invite someone to your table this Christmas season, or ask if you could join them at their table. This entire season is about Jesus coming to bring some amazingly Good News! His only command is that we lay our lives down and follow Him. And it never fails…if you follow Him…He will lead you into community! And this following Jesus thing isn’t as complicated as we make it. Matthew 22:36-40 says, “Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?” 37 Jesus replied, “ ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandSee YOUR TABLE page A6
Immanuel - God With Us Over 2,000 years ago, the Jews were anxiously waiting for their Messiah, the One who God had promised would come to save His people. Burdened under the foreign rule of the Romans, God’s Chosen People cried out to Him. As He had done many times in the past, God answered their cry. God Himself took on mortal form and became one of us, to come die for us so that we could be with Him forever. But, strange as it may seem to us, His people failed to recognize Him. They were expecting a king, but He came as a servant. Our prayer this year is that as we eagerly anticipate celebrating His birth, we don’t miss who Jesus truly is and why He came. Amid all the busyness and glitz and glitter of the season, let’s take a moment to forget about the lights, and the tree, and Santa, and shopping for gifts, and all of the other things we get so caught up in. Let’s take a moment to remember that the Creator of the Universe wrapped Himself in frail human flesh because He would rather die a horrible death on the cross than leave us in the dark. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5 ESV). Immanuel. God with us. That’s the miracle of Christmas; Jesus is still shining into our darkness.

ment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.” That’s it…love God, seek to bring Him glory, and show love to your neighbor. Walk with Jesus, bringing His light into the darkness and illuminating the lives of the lonely, least, and the left behind. In word and in deed proclaim the Good News that although we were lost in the darkness of our sin and a world broken and cursed…Jesus came, He lived a life of perfection, He willingly gave His life on the cross, He died but rose again, and He offers forgiveness to all who believe! And for those who believe…one day He is coming again to take us home, and when we get “home” there will always be a table of community where we can sit. So, don’t just speak this to people from a far! Live a life surrendered to Jesus that reflects that you really believe this Good News and invite people into your life. This Christmas give someone the gift of heartwarming memories of someone showing them Jesus’ love. Invite someone to your table, because it might just be the beginning of a “cure for loneliness”.

What Christmas means to me I remember my first Christmas after I became a follower of Jesus Christ in 1987. I was very excited about celebrating it that year because I was involved in my very first Christmas Cantata at the church. I remember that during one of the rehearsals that the music director was asking people to share what Christmas meant to them during the program. I was one of those people that she asked and I remember being both excited and apprehensive all at the same time. What a wonderful opportunity to share why this Christmas was so much different than all the other ones before that but not sure what I was going to say. I did not want to look foolish on the stage. Needless to say, I said okay and then I went about the arduous task of figuring out what to say. It had to be succinct and powerful. Anyone who knows me knows that I am anything but succinct when it comes to speaking. So after several failed attempts I finally sat down and reread the
Christmas story. As I was doing so I began to count the number of people that were a part of this initial story. It was interesting to see how the story grew as one character after another began to enter into the picture. First it was Mary, then Elizabeth and Zacharias, followed by Joseph, then the shepherds, and finally the magi from the East. There are many other’s some mentioned in the Bible and some assumed were involved because it would be natural such as, Mary’s family and all those who would have helped the magi in their quest. The simple fact for me at that time is that this precious gift from God touched many people in just his birth. There are millions of others who have been affected by this story ever since. It became quite obvious to me what I was supposed to say that night. Here is the very succinct and powerful message that God gave to me as I was rereading his story, “This is my is my first Christmas as a follower of the Christ child and what I have learned over
the past year is that Jesus is the greatest gift of all that keeps on giving and never runs out.” This simple truth has been played out in my life over the past 29 years over and over again as I see the Christmas blessing touching people’s hearts and bringing them to a new life with God, the Giver of the greatest gift of all. I have been renewed many times over as I once more read the story of the birth of Jesus and I am reminded just how much God loves us, no matter who we are. My prayer is that this story is your story as well and that you are renewed once more in the realization of how much you loved by God as well. If it is not your story then I especially pray for you to discover this gift of love that will bless your socks off if you let it. It’s that time of year when families slow down their work, speed up their frantic schedules, purchase things they don’t need, and spend more money than they earn on toys, when cardboard boxes entertain just fine. It’s that time of year when we stop & reflect on what kind of love it took for God the Father, to send His only Son into this world to die for people… people who didn’t love the Father and wouldn’t love the Son.
God, what have I done, what could I possibly do to deserve such a gift? I know the answer… nothing. I recognize that I am not worthy, that I am a sinner,that Your love is a higher kind of love than any other, and that You love me because of WHO You Are, not because of who I am. It’s that time of year when the world pauses to acknowledge God’s GIFT and to say Thank You to the giver of the Best Gift Ever – JESUS CHRIST.

Are you ready for Christmas
It’s obvious to me that the busier you are, the faster the time goes. And the more focused you are on things, the less focused you are on what really matters, or WHO really matters. Into a culture that was busy & focused doing good things, Jesus was born. Into the people of God (the Jews), came ONE born to a poor Jewish family to change the focus from obeying rules & rituals to knowing & connecting to the very heart of God. Jesus came to show people the Way to the Father. Jesus came to be the Way for people to approach the Father. Jesus came to show us how to live, how to love, how to be in relationship with a Living God, not an image of a god. Jesus CAME! I’m glad He did! I needed a Savior, ONE who paid for my sins. I needed a Guide, ONE who shows
me how to live. I needed a Friend, ONE who walks with me on my journey called life. I hope this Christmas Season to not get distracted with so much busyness that I fail to focus on JESUS! I hope this Christmas Season is focused on sharing the ONLY HOPE for the world – JESUS, the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of God. Lord, help me to keep my focus on Jesus. Help me point people to Jesus. Help me to make YOUR reason in sending HIM my mission this season! Amen. Without Jesus, this life is nothing. The most wonderful time of the year Christmas. It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Everyone knows that. The music playing everywhere tells us that. The ads on TV show happy families and friends gathering to celebrate. Homes are beautiful. Snow falls gently. People are joyful and all is wonderful. So what makes PASTOR it wonderful? Often JEAN NESS it’s the traditions we celebrate. The annual get Howe United together with friends to Methodist Church exchange gifts, to share a meal, and to celebrate another year of friendship. The office party where you eat a little too much, maybe drink a little too much, and celebrate another successful season at work. The family gatherings where you revel in your love for one another. Everyone has their own traditions and none are more special than yours. Your family may gather on Christmas Eve to share a meal, open one and only one gift each, then go to church together to hear the story of Jesus’ birth. Or you may gather

on Christmas day, everyone in new pajamas, sipping cocoa and coffee, and opening gifts to celebrate this special day and the special love you share. There’s only one challenge with these great traditions. Change happens. Many changes in life are great changes. For example, my husband and I were blessed with a new son-in-law this summer. My daughter is really happy and the new couple is enjoying their time preparing for their first Christmas as husband and wife. But included in the joy of an additional family member comes the challenge of having to work around his family’s schedule for the holidays. Anyone with multiple adult children knows this scheduling nightmare! It’s a challenge, but a good one! A great joy but also a change is the addition of a new child. Babies are wonderful, especially at Christmas. But babies require sleep, food, and changing on a regular basis or they get cranky. Often, family Christmas celebrations don’t allow much flexibility for caring for a newborn. Family meals can be loud. Parties often run late. New parents can feel stressed trying to balance caring for their child with their desire to celebrate with family and friends. Yes, there are wonderful things that cause
change, but at other times, the changes of life are really tough. Grief and loss can be due to a loss of job, a divorce, or the death of a family member. When these things happen, the same traditions that once brought joy, peace, and contentment instead lead to sadness, heartache, and a sense of being alone. The first Christmas after my sister died was pretty bleak. We got together, but the joy had leaked out of the celebration like a deflated balloon. What had once brought peace and comfort and joy to my heart only brought sadness, loss and a reminder of the one what wasn’t there. Many tears were shed that year and it didn’t feel very wonderful at all. I came to dread the traditions I’d loved, because they just weren’t the same. Christmas had lost a lot of its joy, wonder and beauty. My family learned that if we were going to figure out how to go on, something had to change. Traditions had to change. Life had to change. Celebration had to change. So we made changes. Christmas Eve had been our family’s main celebration so we moved it to Christmas night. I’d love to tell you that the simple act of changing our tradition took care of the problem, but that wouldn’t be the truth. It helped, but it wasn’t the only answer. The truth was that there was a hole in my
life. My sister was gone. The one who had been a part of every day of my growing up years was no more. For many years Christmas was pretty dull and joyless in my heart. I only began to recover when I realized that I had placed the emphasis on the wrong part of Christmas. I had looked forward to the traditions and practices of my family rather than the gift of the Messiah. I had depended on the joy that came from family and friends rather than the joy of a relationship with God. Family and friends are wonderful. Traditions and practices are great. But none of those things are eternal. All of those things will change. All of those things will end. I needed to change my emphasis from what was human - lovely and joyful, yes, but temporary - to what was unchanging. There’s a saying that goes that the only thing that never changes is that everything changes. It’s true. Life is constantly changing – for the good and for the bad. When we need an unchanging place and person, we have only to look to the baby who was born in a stable in Bethlehem. He will never change. He will never let you down. He will never leave. Best Christmas gift ever given Christmas is quickly approaching!! The snow we experienced has gotten many of us in Christmas mode. Karen and I rang the bells for Salvation Army and talked to many wonderful people as they sacrificed their hard earned money to help those in need. We have One every Christmas season that sacrificed for all who would believe. He became flesh and dwelt among us so that He might become our perfect sacrifice for the sinful nature we all carry. He has shown us the perfect example of God the Father. Matthew 1:21 tells us; “She will
give birth to a son and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” The best gift that has ever been given was sent to us all in the form of a Christ child. Jesus is our perfect gift but we all know a gift has to be received. Many won’t receive this gift of God. John 1:10-12 tells us: “He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he
gave the right to become children of God.” It’s up to us to receive and believe in the Christ child. Many will spend lots of dollars on gifts that will never satisfy the true reason for the season. Many want to remove the word Christmas from our season of celebration. Without Christ, there would be no celebration. Mas has been added to Christ to form the word Christmas. Christ, meaning Jesus and mas meaning to send or sacrifice. Jesus was sent as our perfect sacrifice. For those who believe, we have all we need to share with others that need the perfect gift this year.
