Opinions split on 1800s park rezoning GOOD MORNING
Final decision rests with commissioners BY BOB BRALEY bbraley@kpcmedia.com
ALBION — The Noble County Plan Commission voted to send a proposed rezoning for an 1800s craft village to the Noble County Commissioners with no recommendation for or against it. Key Largo Realty, Raccoon Ridge LLC and property owners Doug and Kimberly Jennings
sought to have their property at 11330 E. C.R. 500S rerezoned from A-1 Agricultural to VM Village Mix. The proposed Moose Lake Christian Craft Village would include 1800s re-enactors, multiple shops, a bed and breakfast and a beach area with fishing. More than 90 people packed the Dekko Room of the Noble County
Office Complex-South, with those who said they supported the project and those opposed about evenly split. Attorney Michael Yoder said that the VM zoning would be needed to install a farmers market, ice cream shop and other low-intensity retail businesses. Yoder said the Jenningses plan to promote agricultural tourism and educational tourism presented in a formal, dignified manner and a Christian environment.

Band ‘Well-Suited’ for competition season BY DENNIS NARTKER dnartker@kpcmedia.com
KENDALLVILLE — There’s renewed enthusiasm with the East Noble Marching Knights this season. “The numbers are up. The kids are excited about the show, about performing for the public and in competition,” said Bryan Munoz, East Noble director of bands. The 2013 East Noble Marching Knights band has 85 students, with 14 in the color guard. This is 12 more than last year, and Munoz is projecting a band with 100 or more in the near future. “We have a lot of students dedicated to the program,” he said. “Not all of them can be in marching band because of their class schedule or involvement in other school activities. They may choose to be in concert band.” Since June 1, band members have been putting in time — first preparing for public appearances and then band camp in July, learning the new competition show. Munoz scheduled the band for five parades compared to three last year. The band marched in Kendallville’s Sesquicentennial parade, the Noble County Fair parade and the Aug. 17 Chautauqua Days parade in Rome City. The Marching Knights will participate in the Light the Night in September and the East Noble Homecoming parade in October.
The band also performs at halftime of East Noble home football games. Andrew Hurst and Tayla Skidgel are the senior drum majors. “Well-Suited” is the name of this year’s competition show, relating to the four suits in a deck of playing cards. The show has four musical movements identified by diamonds, hearts, spades and clubs. “The music is sophisticated (from Justin Timberlake’s dance club to the Overture to ‘Romeo and Juliet’) and chosen so it appeals to everyone watching the performance,” said Munoz, who is in his third year directing the Marching Knights. The show has a lot of choreography, with the students moving most of the time. “There’s a high demand on footwork with the kids doing 164 counts five or six times, the most they’ve done,” said Munoz. He described the 7 1/2- to 9-minute show as high-energy, adding, “It’s easy for the kids to understand, and they enjoy the music.” Munoz was selected East Noble School Corp.’s teacher of the year earlier this year and is entered in the competition for Indiana Teacher of the Year. The band’s competition season begins Saturday, Sept. 14, with the DeKalb Invitational, followed

Regime denies using chemical weapons in Damascus suburb BEIRUT (AP) — The images showed lifeless children — wrapped in simple white cloths, their pale faces unmarked by any wound — lined up shoulder to shoulder in a vivid demonstration of an attack Wednesday in which activists say the Syrian regime killed at least 130 people with toxic gas. The Syrian government adamantly denied using chemical weapons in an artillery barrage targeting suburbs east of Damascus, calling the allegations “absolutely baseless.” The U.S., Britain and France demanded that a team of U.N. experts already in the country be granted immediate access to investigate the claims. Videos and photographs showed row upon row of bodies wrapped in white shrouds lying on a tile floor, including more than a dozen children. There was little evidence of blood or conventional injuries and most appeared to have suffocated. Survivors of the purported attack, some twitching uncontrollably, lay on gurneys with oxygen masks covering their faces. Activists and the opposition leadership gave widely varying death tolls, ranging from as low as 136 to as high as 1,300. But even the most conservative tally would make it the deadliest alleged chemical attack in Syria’s civil war. For months now, the rebels, along with the United States, Britain and France, have accused the Syrian government of using chemical weapons in its campaign to try to snuff out the rebellion SEE SYRIA, PAGE A9
