Canal Days, June 6-10, has fun, rides, parade By Rod King

Festival time

The area’s first community festival of the season is set to take over downtown New Haven June 6-10. Canal Days will be alive with events for all ages, from Kids Day in the Park and Seniors Day Picnic to a car show and cruise, arts and crafts, cornhole tournament and of course the midway rides and the big annual parade. Burton Brothers Midway Rides will open Tuesday, June 6. Riders will be able to begin getting their thrills at 5 p.m. each day until Saturday when rides will open up at noon. Entertaining games will also be available. Both the food and the exhibitor tents will open Wednesday through Friday at 4 p.m. and operate until 9 p.m. They will host visitors on Saturday starting at noon. Two Fort Wayne Astronomical Society telescopes will be available for the public to view stars in the southern sky during the May 20 open house at its new Star*Quest Observatory at Jefferson Township Park east of New Haven. Star*Quest project manager Gene Stringer, a Fort Wayne Astronomical Society member since 1966, says the organization hopes to extend astronomy to local and area high schools and colleges and maybe even introduce it into the curriculum.

Folks from surrounding communities will gather to celebrate summer at Hoagland Days, June 15-17 at the Community Park. Once again, the festival will feature food, music, carnival rides, demolition derbies, monster trucks and volleyball. Hoagland Area Advancement Association sponsors the event, which has become a way to market the community while raising money for local projects. “All the money goes to the Association for the parks,” said Sally Holle, the festival’s publicity coordinator. “We’re still a nonprofit organization, and this is all volunteers.” The park has grown to four ball diamonds and a basket-
