by members of the Millennial Leaders Alliance, which is part of northeast Indiana’s Vision 2020. The mission of the Millennial Leaders Alliance is to develop a community of future leaders in northeast Indiana and create opportunities for action, growth and regional pride.

The columnists take a look at why northeast Indiana is once again attracting professionals 30 years old and younger, as well as how to retain young talent and why volunteering is important to this generation.

As a business community, it’s important that we take time to recognize the future leaders and provide our support. By incorporating their ideas and expertise into our current processes and procedures, we can build a sustainable community.

Economy to benefit from attracting millennials

By Aimee Ambrose aambrose@kpcmedia.com Terms like “quality of life” and “quality of place” spell out a recent shift in strategies to improve northeast Indiana’s economy by marketing the region to millennials.

As the largest generation now in the United States, millennials - the demographic of approximately 18-34-year-olds that make up about a third of the nation - possess important qualities as entrepreneurs, workers and consumers for pumping new life into communities.

Attracting them requires tailoring a message to their tastes and trends, which includes selling a city as a great place to live as much as selling it as a great place to work.

That’s where tourism or, more officially, destination marketing comes in as a key economic development tool.

“We are the welcome mat for economic development,” said Carrie Lambert, executive director of the Indiana Tourism Association. “We have to be showcasing all these wonderful things that our residents can

enjoy and tourists like, and that’s how we’re going to get the businesses. That’s how we’re going to get the talent.”

Destination marketing and economic development organizations both have different missions for growing an area’s economy. Economic development focuses on attracting businesses, while tourism groups attract people on a more temporary basis.

However, the functions interlock like gears in an economic engine, according to Dan O’Connell’s analogy.

“Economic development tries to grow the engine size of our community,” said O’Connell, CEO of Visit Fort Wayne.

“We’re more like the oil to the engine.

We’re more like the fluids.”

Those “fluids,” he pointed out, consist of circulating visitors through attractions like convention spaces, entertainment venues, cultural sites and other amenities.

Promoting local attributes gives people opportunities to see that community’s value.

That could help draw in new residents and visitors, which could help lead to new attractions and events. Simultaneously, a growing population means an increase in skilled and talented workers, which encourn

Which social networks do you use? Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr.

Which form of communication do you use most frequently? Difficult to say. The nice part about email outside of interoffice conversations is, if people have opted-in they’ve basically said they want to hear what you have to say.

For shorter, faster correspondence I find texting to be the best method. For more complex exchanges, where a lot needs to be covered in a little time, just pick up the phone.

What is your biggest accomplishment within your workplace, school or community? Along with two excellent business development managers, I’m helping Indianapolis-based Delivra launch their first field office. That’s a pretty big accomplishment for all of us.

In my artistic life I’ve done a number of exhibits that have attempted to push the boundaries of form and content. Some of my documentary work has been published

by National Geographic. I think the most personally rewarding thing has been, no joke, a personal rejection letter encouraging me to keep submitting from the editors of “The New Yorker.”

What did you learn along the way while achieving this? Don’t ever assume you can’t learn something from someone no matter how different they are from you.

To what do you contribute your success to date? Constantly wanting to know everything about everything and having a strong mother who taught me

to always keep learning, questioning and trying to become a better human.

What is the largest obstacle you have overcome to achieve what you have thus far? Everyone has their own battles, their own obstacles in life. I’m not going to elaborate on or complain about mine. What I will say is I have some incredibly kind, generous and understanding friends. And remember when you meet someone, you don’t know what their challenges have been.

Where do you see yourself in five to 10 years? It’s only possible to see myself as I was the moment before I wrote this.

I’m obfuscating. The great fortune of the human mind is it can plan for the future, right? Perhaps I’d just rather not say or set something rigid into place and miss an opportunity.

If you could work in one TV sitcom office, which would it be? My friends will attest to my complete ignorance in all

things television related. Don’t own one.

What is a millennial stereotype that fits you? I wear hipster glasses. A friend picked them out and they’re amazing, but let us not pretend they aren’t hipster.

What is the most misunderstood aspect of the millennial generation in your opinion? One, that they like to talk about themselves. Writing this has not been comfortable. Secondly, more importantly, that they all want change.

Many are perfectly content with what is, or content not to do anything about what is, being Nicholson Baker’s Howie.

Why should a company hire a millennial in your opinion? They grew up in a world that, for better or worse, was more rapidly than ever before becoming automated. They expect that if a system can be automated it will be.

With increased efficiency comes not only more productivity but also more time to take on other challenges.

Any hidden talents? Sometimes, when I yell while watching sports, I can change the outcome. Remember when Notre Dame beat LSU in their bowl game last year? That was all me.

Which form of communication do you use most frequently? As an attorney who frequently counsels employers on the legal risks associated with social media, I steer clear of Snapchat and seldom tweet. Rather, most of my communications – whether work or community-related – occur via email and over text message.

What is your biggest accomplishment within your workplace, school or community? Winning a case (big or small) is always a thrill as is counseling an employer through a tricky situation.

However, my biggest work accomplishment has to be establishing relationships with my clients through consistent and practical legal advice such that they routinely trust me to counsel them through difficult situations.

What did you learn along the way while achieving this? Mastering the fundamentals of legal practice and communication early on is essential.

Once you master the fundamentals, there is no replacement for hard work.

To what do you contribute your success to date? Hard work, a great group of professional mentors, friends that keep me sane and the love and support of my family.

What is the largest obstacle you have overcome to achieve what you have thus far? One of my mentors, Tuck Hopkins, referred to my largest obstacle as having “a baby face” and he was right. I remember meeting with a client a few years into my practice and her asking, “When do you graduate law school?”

Where do you see yourself in five to 10 years? In Fort Wayne, continuing to practice law and working to make our community a better place.

If you could work in one TV sitcom office, which would it be? “Psych.”

You’re telling me that I get to work with my best friend solving mysteries, quoting movies and eating jerk chicken? “You know that’s right.”

What is a millennial stereotype that fits you? I think I can multitask. Only recently am I learning that true efficiency comes from uninterrupted work. Yet,

while writing these answers, I have checked my email twice and fielded a client call. I am a work in progress.

What is the most misunderstood aspect of the millennial generation in your opinion? They lack organizational loyalty. I’ve been with Barnes & Thornburg for eight years and see my future here just as many of my friends and colleagues have been with their companies and firms for extended periods. However, I do believe that millennials see loyalty as a two-way street and tend to exhibit less loyalty when they do not feel valued by their employer.

Why should a company hire a millennial in your opinion? Companies have to grow and adapt – that cannot happen without young talent. At the same time, millennials need to be patient and understand that building a career takes time.

Company: Wealth Advisors Group Community organizations you support and in which you are involved: I’m currently a director on Mad Anthony’s Children’s Foundation’s board. I’m also a steering committee chair for the Butler University Fort Wayne Alumni Association.

Any hidden talents? I’ve been called the song-bird of my generation, especially when it comes to country music…just ask my family.

Which social networks do you use?

I’m currently on LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Which form of communication do you use most frequently? I sometimes have people joke with how much I still enjoy taking to people on the phone or in-person interaction. Talking on the phone and in-person allows me to relate to people in ways I wouldn’t otherwise be able to do.

What is your biggest accomplishment within your workplace, school or community? In school, it would be graduating with my finance degree from Butler University. In the workplace, my biggest accomplishment is to be in the role as a financial adviser and soon to be one of the youngest certified financial planners in the Fort Wayne area. In the community, it would be being elected to the board of Mad Anthony’s in 2013 and being one of the youngest board members currently serving.

What did you learn along the way while achieving this? It became apparent to me early in my career that setting short- and long-term goals, continuing my education and hard work were going to get me to the spot I wanted to be in my career.

Those all seem so cliché, but in anything I’ve seen from others that are successful around me this is the foundation that needs to be built.

To what do you contribute your success today? One of my favorite quotes is: “Your network is your net worth,” by Guy Kawasaki. What drives me every day is building long-lasting relationships whether it be in my personal life or my business endeavors. Along those lines I can also contribute a lot of my success to Page 7

the mentors I’ve surrounded myself with.

It’s always been very important to have the right people on my journey through life both personal and business guiding me. Those are the influential people that have helped shape me into the person I am today.

What is the largest obstacle you have overcome to achieve what you have so far? I’d have to say education.

When I graduated from Butler University, I thought I had put 16 years of education behind me only to find out in the “real world” education never truly ends.

Balancing building my business, furthering my education in holistic wealth management and still having a personal life is a difficult task. Right now, I’m currently enrolled in classes to become a certified financial planner in 2015, so that next largest obstacle is currently in progress.

Where do you see yourself in five to 10 years: Isn’t that the million dollar question? Five to 10 years ago, I would’ve never thought I’d be where I am today.

As long as I’m growing in the areas of faith, family and business I’d consider that a success. Check back with me in five to 10 years and I’ll be able to tell you what I never saw coming.

If you could work in one TV sitcom office; which one would it be? “Suits” and “Duck Dynasty.” Those two may sound like complete opposite work environments but that’s what makes me who I am.

What is a millennial stereotype that fits you? Being very technology oriented whether it’s financial software, social media or figuring web-based solutions.

I love to indulge myself in new technologies and use them to my advantage. I truly believe always being able to adapt to the ever-changing technology landscape will separate you from others in your space.

What is the most misunderstood aspect of the millennial generation in your opinion? I have heard us being referred to as the “instant gratification” generation. That we are not willing to sacrifice time and effort to achieve the same things as generations before us. It’s

like the misunderstanding that there is room for “instant gratification” in financial planning. There is no such thing (unless you win the lottery). The millennials that I surround myself with have a long-term perspective on life. They also understand that hard work and sacrifice will eventually get you where you want to be.

Why should a company hire a millennial in your opinion? I truly believe that millennials can provide value in many different places but the largest being their way of adapting to technology. Especially in the financial services industry, technology is constantly changing. We now use web-based software to implement financial plans. Ten years ago, we were using Excel or pen and paper. Millennials have a thirst for growing technology.

I believe they will be a major driver in technology space for generations to come.

To what do you contribute your success to date? Believing in my faith as well as motivation and encouragement from my beautiful wife, Ashley, amazing children, Cael and Rilyn. Along with my parents, Ryan and Lynn, my family and friends, especially Corey and Emily Ford.

What is the largest obstacle you have overcome to achieve what you have thus far? Putting my family and community over myself.

Where do you see yourself in five to 10 years? Continuing to learn something new everyday and becoming a leader.

If you could work in one TV sitcom office, which would it be? If it’s not on ESPN, I probably didn’t watch it.

What is a millennial stereotype that fits you? I asked Siri if I was a millennial.

What is the most misunderstood aspect of the millennial generation in your opinion? We are not all lazy and we don’t feel entitled.

Why should a company hire a millennial in your opinion? We are in a unique generation in which some of us did not grow up with a computer in the home or did not receive one until our high school years. That said, we still remember how to accomplish a task without using modern technology.

Company: Northeast Indiana Innovation Center Community organizations you support and in which you are involved: As a supporter of our community, I am a member of a local Kiwanis International Chapter, the John Chapman Kiwanis Club. I am proud to be a Kiwanian to help both children in our community and guide the Kiwanis student leadership programs.

A branch of Kiwanis dedicated to the collegiate organizations is entitled Circle K International. As a former member and now the district administrative co-assistant for the Circle K Indiana District, I love working with the adults of the millennial generation.

In addition, the National Business Incubation Association has been a great organization to meet and know people from around the globe. It has been a great experience that seems to never stop developing new areas to explore.

Any hidden talents? By no means would I call myself a “Master Chef,” but you should try my southwest barbecue chicken. Simply put, I like to dabble in new tastes and fresh foods.

Which social networks do you use? I use Pinterest which is probably where my food addiction came from. Also, I won’t tweet about my feelings, but will post pictures of my dinner plate so follow @ TallJoe20. Otherwise, you can find me on LinkedIn or Facebook.

Which form of communication do you use most frequently? The least millennial thing about me is that I communicate best when we’re face-toface or with direct phone calls. Call me old-fashioned. After that, I use email more than anything, even for my co-workers who are sitting in the next room. Next is Facebook or Twitter. Snapchat is also great for those conversations that either shouldn’t be recorded or are too dull to read it in the first place.

What is your biggest accomplishment within your workplace, school or community? Creating an open, collaborative, friendly and engaging culture at work. Of course, culture takes more than a person because every person contributes Page 10

to the company culture, so I won’t accept credit for this entirely. I think companies value culture more and more every day and I think it’s important to embrace the differences to make a more impactful organization.

What did you learn along the way while achieving this? People are difficult and people matter. I can’t do more than half of the things that my colleagues do, but they can’t do what I do. It’s what makes a team a team.

To what do you contribute your success to date? First, intuition because common sense goes a long way. Second, my organizational leadership & supervision degree from IPFW because that’s where I learned my base knowledge in organizational behavior and what to expect when I started my career. Third, being a sponge for learning while being around top management. If I am the dumbest guy in a room full of executives, then I consider that a lot of learning that can and should be done.

What is the largest obstacle you have overcome to achieve what you have thus far? I’ve learned that I needed to remove the expectations and perceptions that I had going into a company or organization and to set my own goals instead of letting someone do it for me. I am a firm believer that disappointment and anger stem from shortcomings in expectations. This is something that no educational degree

could’ve truly taught me. Secondly, setting my own goals helped me really understand that I’m not about living up to someone else’s standards, but creating my own goals and dreams for myself.

Where do you see yourself in five to 10 years? Who knows? I’ve created my educational and career roots here in Indiana, but have a dream of studying for my master’s degree overseas. Sometimes it just really depends on the day. I love you Midwest, but I’m ready to experience a new marketplace.

If you could work in one TV sitcom office, which would it be? I’ve been told that I’m a mix of Schmidt from “New Girl” and Sheldon from “The Big Bang Theory.” In either case, my first thought that came to mind was “New Girl.”

What is a millennial stereotype that fits you? I have the attention span of a fish. It’s something that I try extremely hard to overcome.

Why should a company hire a millennial in your opinion? Your company will die without a millennial on your side. Every winner you read about in these articles are not “leaders of tomorrow” or “leaders in training.”

They are already leading your company either by directly impacting it from the inside-out, or indirectly with the outside-in. Don’t get lost in the past by ineffectively planning your company’s future.

What is the most misunderstood aspect of the millennial generation in your opinion? I think one of the most understood aspects of millennials is seeing our refusing to grow up and “act like real adults” as a negative. I think we are a generation that works hard to achieve our goals but who also values fun.

Why should a company hire a millennial in your opinion? I think a lot of millennials have a “figure it out” attitude. We don’t wait for people to hold our hands and explain every detail of something. We are happy and excited to dive right in and figure things out on our own. I also think it is common for millennials to feel comfortable taking on really diverse roles which can be super valuable at smaller companies.

Company: Parkview Health Community organizations you support and in which you are involved: I am a member of the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership’s Millennial Leaders Alliance.

What is your biggest accomplishment within your workplace, school or community? The biggest accomplishment within my professional career thus far was developing community partner relationships through community outreach which allowed me the opportunity to be involved in so many great development projects throughout northeast Indiana. One of those projects was having the opportunity to promote and develop wellness programing for the Center for Healthy Living in Kosciusko County. It is scheduled to open in December 2015. Each relationship that was built along the way, or project that was completed, has been another step in the right direction.

What did you learn along the way while achieving this? I learned along the way that people have a strong sense of community and if everyone joins together you will be amazed at what you can accomplish.

To what do you contribute your success to date? I have been very blessed to have many mentors, friends and colleagues to help guide me along the way but my greatest support has come from my family. My hard working and lead-by-example family has contributed to my success by inspiring me to get back up after I’ve fallen and constantly push me to be a better person. Without their devoted support I would not be where I am today.

What is the largest obstacle you have overcome to achieve what you have thus far? The largest obstacle I have overcome is stepping out of my comfort zone and getting involved in my community and volunteer opportunities.

I’ve learned that the only person holding me back is myself and after I let go of that, I could truly go after what I wanted.

Where do you see yourself in five to 10 years? My priority is to grow within my organization. I am extremely passionate about continuing to work and grow in the health care field and I’m excited to spend the next few years learning and mastering current roles.

From there, I’d like to be challenged to taking on more responsibility and be able to leverage the experience I’ve built.

If you could work in one TV sitcom office, which would it be? The “Big Bang Theory” because every episode is hilarious and I don’t think I would ever have a boring day in the office with those characters.

What is a millennial stereotype that fits you? The stereotype that would fit

me would be that I am goal-oriented. If I know I am working towards something, I am motivated to do anything and everything to make sure it happens.

What is the most misunderstood aspect of the millennial generation in your opinion? The most misunderstood aspect of the millennial generation is that we are seen as lazy or resist hard work. Millennials are quite proactive in developing their careers and are exploring our passions as we are finding our place in the workforce.

Why should a company hire a millennial in your opinion? A company should hire a millennial because we are self-expressive, tech-savvy and team players. Our generation is not afraid to put new ideas out there and offer a fresh perspective while also offering a heightened sense of community.

I like to think that I have some musical talent. I grew up playing music and continue to do so in my band “The Dead Records.” I have been out on several tours playing music all over the country.

Which social networks do you use?

Mainly Facebook and Instagram. I used to have Snapchat and Twitter, but currently only use Twitter for work.

Which form of communication do you use most frequently? It depends on what I am working on. Work is pretty email heavy, which is fine and works well for what I am doing. For personal, I pretty much only text, but a phone call is necessary from time to time.

What is your biggest accomplishment within your workplace, school or community? I don’t know if I have one “biggest” accomplishment. The process of being an advocate for cyclists and cycling infrastructure never really ends. I am super happy to see new bike lanes going in, our first bike box installed and rides like Trek The Trails continue to grow. They are all huge steps in becoming a more bicycle friendly city.

What did you learn along the way while achieving this? I think I have learned a lot in the last five years. When you are talking about something that changes the way a city works, some people really hate change. Main Street getting bike lanes is a huge deal and probably our city’s most “in your face” location for them so far. I hope to see those against projects like that come around in the next few years as projects continue. The second thing I have learned is that almost everyone wants to be involved with what is happening with cycling in our city, but sometimes just need a little help. If that means guiding them on a Trek The Trails ride, showing someone how to pump up their tires, or even helping them buy their first bike in 20 years, I am happy to make myself available for people.

To what do you contribute your success to date? Without a doubt, it’s working for a family that has really kind of allowed me to create my own job in a way. Being able to be as involved with the cycling community as much as possible has really shown to be a positive thing for all parties involved. I have a passion for bicycles and everyone I work with shares that same passion. It’s wonderful.

What is the largest obstacle you have overcome to achieve what you have thus far? I would have to say my largest obstacle isn’t something that I can overcome but learn to work well with is time. I am the events coordinator, social media guy, do all of the receiving/pricing for the shop, as well as all of our warranty.

I also run our shops cyclocross race team and still somehow find time to play music and bike my bike.

Where do you see yourself in five to 10 years? I honestly have no idea. Five years is a little more seeable that 10 at the moment. Sonya and I just purchased our first home and are super excited about that.

I am very happy with the work that I am doing and want to continue to be involved with making Fort Wayne not only a better place to ride, but a great place to ride.

If you could work in one TV sitcom office, which would it be? I pretty much just want to be Aziz on Parks and Recreation. “Treat yo self.”

What is a millennial stereotype that fits you? I just had to Google “millennial stereotypes.” I don’t know. I’m not super fond of stereotypes and will just continue to allow my work to speak for me.

What is the most misunderstood aspect of the millennial generation in your opinion? I hate to think that we are being viewed as a “lazy” generation. I certainly see where certain technologies have allowed us to do lots of things fast and give us truly instant gratification, but in no way do I think that makes us lazy. I am happy to be friends with super-motivated young people who are really making visible differences in the places they live.

Why should a company hire a millennial in your opinion? I don’t know that you should hire someone just because they are a millennial, but I think that our generation has great promise. We may ask to work a little bit outside of the lines and I think that if businesses allow that they will see great results. We are flexible, open-minded and motivated to make change.

What is your biggest accomplishment within your workplace, school or community? In 2013, I came on board to YLNI as chair of Living Fort Wayne.

Living Fort Wayne is an events and social website with a mission to highlight everything that is great about living, working, and playing in Fort Wayne.

The website was donated to YLNI and I was tasked with its progress. In less than a year, I had recruited a great team of volunteers, rebuilt and relaunched the website, and grew the site’s online presence. Out of those volunteers new leaders have emerged and moved onto chair positions and even directors on the board.

What did you learn along the way while achieving this? This was my first time ever managing a group of volunteers. Managing volunteers is a lot more about inspiring by vision rather than managing people who have the paycheck incentive. I gained a lot of leadership skills and learned a lot of lessons during my time with Living Fort Wayne.

To what do you contribute your success to date? A work ethic driven from growing up on a dairy farm combined with a love for my community.

What is the largest obstacle you have overcome to achieve what you have thus far? I have to say that my largest obstacle was coming out in a community that I felt, at the time, was

not the most accepting of homosexuality. Before coming out, I lacked the confidence I needed to be myself.

Where do you see yourself in five to 10 years? I hope to continue to be a civic leader and engaged in the continued growth and progress of our region.

If you could work in one TV sitcom office, which would it be? I don’t watch much television, so I’m not sure about a TV sitcom, but some days I feel I’m right over the cube wall from the Milton from the comic strip.

What is a millennial stereotype that fits you? Probably the “good at social media” stereotype. Somehow in a majority of my volunteer work I’ve ended up somehow involved with social media strategies or campaigns from

which I had no prior experience whatsoever.

What is the most misunderstood aspect of the millennial generation in your opinion? I think a false perception of millennials is that of entitlement. I don’t know about you, but the millennials I know are active, engaged in our community, and truly striving to make a difference not only for their futures here in the region, but the continued futures of generations to come.

Why should a company hire a millennial in your opinion? Millennials are the future leaders of this world. I believe that millennials are go-getters and see the value in hard work when it moves an organization, community or people towards progress and growth.

School: Manchester University Community organizations you support and in which you are involved: I am currently involved with the Learn More Center. It provides educational services to meet the instructional needs of adult learners to help them attain a high school equivalency diploma. I am working on creating a science curriculum and will be teaching the subject in the fall. I also volunteer for various causes that interest me. At school I am in multiple clubs, I serve on the marketing committee in the accounting and business club; I am a student representative of the value, ideas and the arts committee; and I aid in enrollment and retention by working as a student ambassador and student orientation leader.

Any hidden talents? Music is my passion. I like to compose and play my own music. When I was in eighth grade, I made a demo CD. I was going to try out for “American Idol,” but I was a little young.

Which social networks do you use?

Facebook and Instagram are my preferred social networks. I never really got into Twitter.

Which form of communication do you use most frequently? I am not much of a phone person. If you really need me, you should text me. For school and other functions, I prefer email.

What is your biggest accomplishment within your workplace, school or community? This is a tough question.

My idea of accomplishment is setting a goal, working towards it and learning from it. It doesn’t have to be done successfully, just proactively. In that case, I accomplish great things every day.

I would say my biggest accomplishment is gaining wisdom every day and contributing to my community.

What did you learn along the way while achieving this? I have learned to never set parameters on your dreams because that only hinders your ability to be your best self. Learn from failures and achieve more by creating solutions.

To what do you contribute your success to date? There are so many Page 16

people in my life that pushed me to where I am today. I would thank my professors, my employers, my youth group pastor and, most importantly, my mother for all of the support and guidance. Without them all the hard work, dedication, mistakes, and difficulties would have meant nothing.

What is the largest obstacle you have overcome to achieve what you have thus far? I can be introverted.

Where do you see yourself in five to 10 years? Ideally, I hope to start a family in a cozy home in the suburbs. Professionally, I am not sure where I will be in five to 10 years. I am open to an array of ideas. Ideally, I hope to have a master’s degree in either health care management or marketing management. Look out world. I’ll be on the market in two years.

If you could work in one TV sitcom office, which would it be? Modern

What is a millennial stereotype that fits you? Many say that I have an old soul. I am not sure if I fit the main stereotypes that millennials have. Only thing close is that I love my technology and I am glued to something electronic at all times.

What is the most misunderstood aspect of the millennial generation in your opinion? Personally, people think we are lazy or unmotivated. I have witnessed the exact opposite from my peers. Many in my generation work long and hard for what they want to achieve.

Why should a company hire a millennial in your opinion? We have new ideas, perspectives and a fresh look on what people our age need. We are always looking to “do it better.” If a company wants to lead an industry, they have to be the bar, not look up to it.

Any hidden talents? I wouldn’t consider any of my talents hidden. I do enjoy playing the piano and the guitar.

My daughter and I play together every evening. She’s only 16 months old, but is becoming quite the pianist.

I prefer the social network of friends and associates that I have through work, community groups and clubs. My social media use is not nearly as extensive as most of my generation. There are several social media outlets that I like. I do use LinkedIn to manage my business contacts. I use Instagram to keep up with my friends and favorite celebrities. I use Twitter to read most of my news.

Which form of communication do you use most frequently? My most common form of communication is by far the telephone. For business and social purposes, it is the best way that I can communicate when I’m not face to face.

As convenient as emails, text messages and Twitter may be, they are terrible outlets for expression and emphasis.

What is your biggest accomplishment within your workplace, school or community? In the workplace, I treat every client’s needs and goals with an equal respect. Every chance that I have to make a difference in someone’s life and future is the biggest accomplishment I could hope to have. I don’t think that I could rank any of the projects that I have done in the community over any of the others. I try to apply myself to causes and projects that I care for, which makes every accomplishment great.

What did you learn along the way while achieving this? I have learned a lot of things along the short way I’ve traveled

so far. The most important of which are: a strong belief in teamwork, the necessity of a support system of family and friends and humility.

To what do you contribute your success to date? My success is directly contributed to my amazing wife and her incredible support, to my family who has always encouraged greatness in every aspect of life and to the greatest group of friends anyone could ever have.

What is the largest obstacle you have overcome to achieve what you have thus far? The largest obstacle to anyone’s success is beating negativity. Unfortunately, for most, the biggest source of that negativity is within your own head. I have found that staying positive, believing in yourself and keeping a vision of your goals is the best way to conquer it.

Where do you see yourself in five to 10 years? In five to 10 years, I’ll be right here in Fort Wayne with my family, still growing my practice at Raymond James.

I know that the best opportunities for my family are right here in northeast Indiana.

This community offers great opportunities to grow a business, as well as the comforts to raise a family.

If you could work in one TV sitcom office, which would it be? With Sterling Cooper from “Mad Men.” What is a millennial stereotype that fits you? One millennial stereotype that fits me is a need for over stimulation. As I am sitting responding to these questions, I have seven browser windows open on

my computer, the television on and the radio playing. Contrary to the belief of most people outside of our generation, the distractions help me concentrate.

What is the most misunderstood aspect of the millennial generation in your opinion? The most misunderstood aspect of the millennial generation is how we socialize. Most of our parents and grandparents see our generation as very anti-social. I would argue that it is quite the opposite. It is rare for me to go a day without hearing from several of my friends, just to catch up or share a fun fact.

It is misunderstood as socializing because those interactions frequently occur through a text message or social media.

I understand how some fear that there is a lack of personal contact within our generation, especially within the younger half. I think that it is also just a redefining moment for social contact.

Why should a company hire a millennial in your opinion? Working with millennials is vital for the success of any organization. We offer a unique viewpoint to push an organization forward. We were born into a society of technology. This offers the millennial an advantage to adapt business practices in a way that even a member of Gen X wouldn’t see. Millennials offer new ideas to advance a business to a shifting customer base. As millennials become more important as customers, firms will need a staff of millennials to service their needs and engage them.

What is your biggest accomplishment within your workplace, school or community? Bringing Ivy Tech’s “A Reason to Taste” fundraising event to life and watching it raise more than $150,000 in the first three years. That’s Page 18

the equivalent of full tuition for more than 50 students in our community to attend Ivy Tech. It feels good to be a part of making that happen.

What did you learn along the way while achieving this? How important it is to stay organized, think ahead, create unique experiences for guests and work with different community leaders.

To what do you contribute your success to date? I’m from a big, loud family, full of love but with a healthy dose of pressure. From my mom, I developed a willingness to take on new challenges and learn as I go. She’s a risk-taker. And my grandparents taught me to work hard and stay humble. My niece and nephew remind me to be silly.

What is the largest obstacle you have overcome to achieve what you have thus far? Overcoming people’s assumptions about how I look or where I come from and therefore who I am and what I’m capable of.

to 10 years? At work, I’ll be putting on spectacular events that raise money for causes I believe in and serving as a mentor for others. I’ll be hanging out with my wife, dogs and a kiddo at home.

What is your biggest accomplishment within your workplace, school or community? In the community, I have enjoyed being a Big Brother to Melik.

This past fall, our community service project was volunteering at Kingston Care Center (a senior citizen facility).

There, we served lunch and dinner, refilled drinks and had conversation with residents. Melik mentioned to me that he enjoyed participating and would like to do so again in the future.

In the workplace, I am proud to be the executive vice president of The Newcomb Group at such a young age.

This is a family-owned company, and I enjoy learning the responsibilities for this role and helping clients.

What did you learn along the way while achieving this? That even the smallest gestures are greatly appreciated and hard work does pay off, but success does not happen overnight. If you continually do your best and strive to help others, you will see rewards.

success to date? Never give up. If you do not know how to do something, ask questions, research or try something until you get the results you desire. Be patient and try to understand other people’s viewpoints.

What is the largest obstacle you have overcome to achieve what you have thus far? I find that often times I am not taken seriously or that people do not believe that I have solutions to their property management needs/situations. I often have to show them that what I tell them is true, rather than just telling them and having them agree.

Where do you see yourself in five to 10 years? I would like to remain in Fort Wayne, and be a partner at The Newcomb Group. I also would like to continue my work with nonprofit organizations. I would like to see Fort Wayne thrive as a Midwest city and become an attractive place for other, future millennials to reside.

office, which would it be? I enjoyed watching Parks and Recreation. I enjoyed the characters and the story line that focused on helping the community.

What is a millennial stereotype that fits you? I like to stay “plugged in” and enjoys finding out facts on the Internet (via searches) and catching up with friends/acquaintances via social media outlets. I’m not addicted to technology, but do enjoy the convenience of modern technology.

What is the most misunderstood aspect of the millennial generation in your opinion? Since I believe hard work will pay off, or lead to success, I disagrees with the stereotype that “millennials don’t want to work hard.”

Why should a company hire a millennial in your opinion? Any company that wants to hire people who are willing to bring new and creative ideas to the table should hire millennials.

They also bring a fresh perspective to work situations that may need updated.

Organization: Indiana House of Representatives Community organizations you support and in which you are involved: I am involved in our local church, Berean Baptist Church; I am a member of the Albion Lions Club and I serve on the board for the Noble County Public Library.

Any hidden talents? I played the trumpet in our high school marching band.

What is your biggest accomplishment within your workplace, school or community? This session I was able to get a piece of legislation passed that will help a couple in my district with a business they are a starting. Not only will it lead to investment in our community and create jobs, but it will attract lots of people to visit our area. This was an issue that took two years to find a solution.

What did you learn along the way while achieving this? I learned that it takes tenacity and hard work to bring attention to a problem in your community and patience to find a solution.

To what do you contribute your success to date? Perseverance. A drive to keep working when most others would give up.

What is the largest obstacle you have overcome to achieve what you have thus far? Being the youngest member of a group where most of your colleagues are two or three times your age is very intimidating, as is the task of gaining their trust and respect. I have worked hard over the past three years to show my colleagues that I am serious and gain their respect in the legislative process.

Where do you see yourself in five to 10 years? In five to 10 years, I hope to be continuing my service to my community, either in the statehouse or at a nonprofit in the region.

If you could work in one TV sitcom office, which would it be? I would love to work for Selina Meyer in “Veep.”

What is a millennial stereotype that fits you? Millennials are often stereotyped as too reliant on technology and that reliance makes us impersonal.

In my political experience, I have used technology to make the lawmaking process more accessible and accountable.

Technology has enabled a new wave of activism in our political process.

What is the most misunderstood aspect of the millennial generation in your opinion? I have often heard people describe our generation as self-cen-

tered or narcissistic, which I have never understood because some of the most altruistic and generous people I know are millennials. They are idealistic and seek social change in everything they do.

Why should a company hire a millennial in your opinion? Companies should hire millennials because we are idealistic and we now make up more than a quarter of the nation’s population (exceeding baby boomers). Millennials want to have an impact on the world and are defined more by what we do than what we have. Millennials also have a strong entrepreneurial spirit that is an asset to any modern company.

My wife and I give our time, talent and treasure to our church and many local funds/charities, but we’re not really committed to any one thing.

What is your biggest accomplishment within your workplace, school or community? I really enjoy my job, and I have a good work/family balance. If more people would use those two criteria for determining success, we’d have a much happier business world.

What did you learn along the way while achieving this? I’ve learned that the generation gaps you always hear about only affect your business if you let them. Good business isn’t about relating to another person’s lifestyle or technology preferences; it’s about building trust with the person across the table from you, just like it always has been.

I have built some great lasting business relationships with people 30-40 years my senior. Honesty, service and communication make my clients happy – so what if we don’t use the same kind of telephone?

To what do you contribute your success to date? Anybody who has good parents and doesn’t acknowledge what an advantage that gives them in life is delusional, or maybe just arrogant beyond belief. My parents raised us with equal parts love and discipline; they supported us, but didn’t coddle us; they gave us everything we needed, but Page 22

not everything we wanted. I’m learning quickly what a hard line that is to walk with my own kids.

What is the largest obstacle you have overcome to achieve what you have thus far? I’ve been blessed in every way in life; my primary obstacles have been my own mistakes, and there has been no shortage of those.

Where do you see yourself in five to 10 years? Loving my job and happy at home. Everything else will work itself out.

If you could work in one TV sitcom office, which would it be? Working in any sort of a regular office would drive me nuts.

What is a millennial stereotype that fits you? In 2008, I graduated college

with a liberal arts degree, no job, and a pile of student loans. That wasn’t fun.

What is the most misunderstood aspect of the millennial generation in your opinion? Some people think we don’t have a sense of community.

That’s untrue - there have been a number of reports showing that millennials are a very charitable generation. Our communities may look different and we may give in different ways, but we care just as much about contributing to our communities.

Why should a company hire a millennial in your opinion? You shouldn’t hire a millennial any more than you should hire a GenXer or a senior citizen. You should just hire the best person for the job.

ATTRACTING MILLENNIALS: Talent starts with tourism

“Talent attraction often starts with tourism,” said Courtney Tritch, the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership’s vice president of marketing. “Perception is very important to people wanting to live here, talent wanting to move here and businesses wanting to move here. People want to have a good time … People want to do things that are fun and interesting.”

To her, that rings true for everyone, whether they’re a visiting consumer or a traveling company executive.

O’Connell agrees.

“Nobody ever moves a company or their investment to a community unless they’ve visited it first,” he said.

So far, year-to-date, more than 50 conventions were held or are scheduled to be held in Fort Wayne in 2015, and venues are still booking events, said Megan Flohr, a spokeswoman for Visit Fort Wayne. By comparison, the city had about 45 conventions in 2014.

Visit Fort Wayne also generated 34 leads so far this year. Of them, she said, four were repeats, the other 30 were new leads.

Talent attraction and retention is the most critical economic development issue in the state, Tritch said. It’s central to the partnership’s Vision 2020 initiative for increasing northeast Indiana’s population and economy.

Millennials are the primary target to attract.

They tend to give nearly equal weight to a community’s economic prospects and its living qualities when considering whether to live there.

“They’re not deciding where to go based on a job, they’re deciding where to go based on where they want to live,” Lambert said.

A majority of millennials surveyed, 83 percent, ranked living expenses as the most important factor in choosing a place to live, according to a report by the American Planning Association in May 2014. The nonprofit organization serves urban planning professionals. The second most important factor was the local economy, followed by metro features and health.

Employment prospects, though, are dealmakers, as 27 percent of millennials see jobs as the overriding factor in their decision, the study shows. Quality of life was a close second with 18 percent ranking it as their deciding factor, followed by relationships and overall economic health.

Another 20 percent found all the factors equally important.

The generation’s preferences mean

tourism organizations have greater roles in selling communities by showcasing attractions, and they must also work closer with economic development groups.

“It’s a natural symbiotic relationship that should exist in every community,” said Andrew Levine, president of Development Counselors International. The New York City-based firm specializes in traveling and economic development marketing.

Such collaboration already exists in northeast Indiana.

Fort Wayne Inc. and the Regional Partnership on community development projects, O’Connell noted. Visit Fort Wayne and Greater Fort Wayne have leadership crossovers as well, with members of both organizations serving on the others’ boards.

Collaboration is also present on a regional scale with initiatives like Vision 2020 and last year’s “Our Story Project,” where economic development and tourism agencies in northeast Indiana worked together to develop common and consistent marketing themes for the region.

Watching their growth and development throughout high school is a reward in itself.

What did you learn along the way while achieving this? I learned that not everyone shares the same visions but, with the right passion and careful direction, you can bring your vision to fruition.

To what do you contribute your success to date? This is a loaded question, and I could give you a list a mile long. A few key players are my parents who gave me a solid foundation and encouraged me to be involved, dive into new projects, meet new people, and make a difference. I also want to thank Page 24

my good friend, Alex Cornwell, for his patience, mentoring and encouragement.

Along with the many mentors in my life, I’m thankful that my high school and colleges provided environments that inspired service.

What is the largest obstacle you have overcome to achieve what you have thus far? My job as a special education teacher requires me to advocate for all my students. This is often times very difficult in a high school setting. But, I am dedicated to my students and I’ve learned that it’s not always about making others happy, it’s about doing what’s right for the students.

Where do you see yourself in five to 10 years? I have no idea. That’s the fun of it. Wherever I am and whatever I’m doing, I’m sure it will be fulfilling, exciting and exactly what and where I’m supposed to be.

If you could work in one TV sitcom office, which would it be? Definitely

It’s just not true. The majority of millennials that I choose to surround myself with are motivated, involved in their community and are actively making positive changes on a daily basis. They definitely don’t assume things will be handed to them. In fact, they enjoy working for what they have.

I take criticism too personally and I have learned that I have to let these comments roll off my back because I am in the public sector and public sector employees seem to be everyone’s punching bag. Not everyone will like decisions that are made.

public sector or at a nonprofit.

Being in the public sector, I see many similarities between “Parks and Recreation” and my own job. My family and friends call me Leslie Knope.

What is the most misunderstood aspect of the millennial generation in your opinion? Many employers think our generation is entitled. This generation is not entitled, we just have a better sense of what we want and will not settle like past generations did.

Why should a company hire a millennial in your opinion? We are educated, tech savvy and have not yet become jaded. We still see the world as a bright place with lots of options and opportunities. You don’t find that too often with individuals who have been in the workforce for 20 plus years.

Company: New American Conservatory Community organizations you support and in which you are involved: The first is Erin’s House for Grieving Children which does amazing work to help children and their families recover from the loss of loved ones. The second is our local chapter of Food Not Bombs, a group that promotes political peace and unity in a pro-active way by giving free food to those in need. I just began my first term on the board of directors at ARCH. I very much believe in the missions of all of these organizations.

Any hidden talents? I have written and illustrated a few of my own original cartoon series.

Which social networks do you use?

I am not a huge technology buff, but I do have a Facebook account. I enjoy using it to keep in touch with far away friends and for promoting my school.

Which form of communication do you use most frequently? I probably use email the most for school communication, but I prefer to talk to people in person when possible. For me, it is so much easier to understand how people are really thinking, feeling, etc. when you can see their body language and hear their tone of voice.

What is your biggest accomplishment within your workplace, school or community? My biggest accomplishment has been my involvement with New American Youth Ballet and Conservatory. We are a unique school that provides pre-professional ballet training and academics all under one roof. I teach French and Spanish, but I also have recently taken on the role of director for our academic program (the Conservatory). Not many educators have the opportunity to teach in a place that enables students to pursue their individual passions. We have small class sizes, highly motivated students, dedicated teachers and a supportive learning environment. It is my dream job and I am so lucky to be a part of this special place.

What did you learn along the way Page 26

while achieving this? I have learned so many things while working for NAYB (including how to burn pointe shoe ribbons so that they do not unravel. Who knew?). I think that the most valuable lesson I have learned throughout my career is that the more you are willing to do, the more your organization will value you. It is tempting to only accept full-time positions for your exact degree, but that is not always realistic.

I started out part-time with NAYB, but was willing to take on many different roles along the way including working reception, helping to raise funds and even curl hair for our Nutcracker performances. Doing these things taught me the insides and out of the organization and also proved that I was dedicated. Now, I am one of the directors of the school and I am so honored.

To what do you contribute your success to date? I am so very lucky because everyone in my life is supportive, positive and loving. This includes my family, friends, students and colleagues. They have all helped to shape my life and my career and I am so grateful for all of them. To me, success has more to do with relationships than it has to do with jobs or money. My role of academic director is just an added bonus.

What is the largest obstacle you have overcome to achieve what you have thus far? I have always been a bit

self-conscious. At some point you have to either overcome that or learn to make it work. If everyone else around you is telling you that you can do something and be good at it, then you probably can.

Where do you see yourself in five to 10 years? I see myself teaching and raising a few little kids with my husband, Dave. I’d also like to pursue a higher degree at some point.

If you could work in one TV sitcom office, which would it be? My favorite show growing up was “Full House.” I wanted to be Rebecca Donaldson and co-host “Wake Up San Francisco” with Danny Tanner.

What is a millennial stereotype that fits you? I honestly don’t know.

What is the most misunderstood aspect of the millennial generation in your opinion? We are not all technology obsessed or even technologically savvy for that matter.

Why should a company hire a millennial in your opinion? Well, I think that employers should look at individuals and not generations.

However, I think that the advantage to having young employees is that they tend to have a lot of energy and new ideas. I have a lot of respect for my fellow millennials who are receiving this award. I admire what they do for our community.

I use Instagram and Facebook the most.

Pictures have the ability to help tell a good story, and sometimes the picture tells the story all by itself. As you can imagine, I post a lot of pictures. I have Twitter and LinkedIn, but I’m still learning how to navigate those.

Which form of communication do you use most frequently? I typically use text messaging or email, but I actually prefer a good, old-fashioned phone call. I really enjoy getting to know people, and I can’t always do that just reading texts.

What is your biggest accomplishment within your workplace, school or community? I’m currently living out my biggest accomplishments. I work with the Millennial Leaders Alliance. On top of that, I’m a graduate teaching assistant at IPFW, and I’m completing my master’s degree in professional communication.

I’m passionate about these things, and am very fortunate that my workplaces allow me to achieve my goals. I never feel like I have to go to work; I get to go to work. That’s a big change from jobs I’ve had in the past.

What did you learn along the way while achieving this? Working a lot of hours and long nights isn’t so bad when you love what you do, but a work-life balance is really hard. To guarantee some work-life balance, I have to schedule in “me” time or friend time. This means you can typically find me at the gym at 5 a.m.

To what do you contribute your success to date? I’ve always been a hardworking person. My first job was at Dairy Queen when I was 14, and I’ve worked ever since. At times, I’ve held

two or three jobs. Through those jobs, I’ve gained a ton of knowledge and responsibility, but I also gained a lot of support. When I took on my current roles at the Regional Partnership and IPFW, I realized I had a whole network of people supporting my decisions and helping me to achieve my goals. Everything from recommending me for jobs to helping me take time out of my day to relax a little has helped me to be successful.

What is the largest obstacle you have overcome to achieve what you have thus far? Before I took my job at the Regional Partnership, I worked at the Dash In for several years. When I was offered the job as Millennial 2020 Specialist, I almost declined the position because I was really scared of making that big of a change and a little afraid of the unknown. Now, I’m really glad I accepted the job offer.

Where do you see yourself in five to 10 years? Maybe this is the millennial stereotype that fits me; I haven’t thought that far ahead. I have a lot of ideas about what I’d like to do, or where I’d like to see myself, but I haven’t settled on any of them. Right now, I’m really happy with what I’m doing.

If you could work in one TV sitcom office, which would it be? I’m not dedicated to any office shows, but I do love “Harry Potter.” Teaching is so fun.

I can only imagine what a classroom would be like at Hogwarts where magic

is involved in the learning process.

What is a millennial stereotype that fits you? I don’t think far enough in advance. I always have a backup plan, but I don’t have a solid five- or 10-year plan. I’m still trying to decide what I want to do when I grow up. There are a lot of things I know I need to start thinking about for the long term, but I just haven’t thought it through yet.

What is the most misunderstood aspect of the millennial generation in your opinion? That millennials are lazy.

Maybe I’m lucky to be surrounded by highly motivated people that are working very hard, professionally or in their free time, to make a difference. But I don’t know one millennial that isn’t trying to do something to make a difference for themselves or the community.

Why should a company hire a millennial in your opinion? A lot of millennials are dedicating their time to the community, and more than ever before are unafraid of collaboration with people or businesses they didn’t have relationships with before. Millennials are helping to expand networks for themselves, but also for their companies.

In the big picture, that’s really unifying.

Instead of several people trying to achieve the same goal individually, millennials are creating connections to help everyone achieve the same goal collectively. In my opinion, that’s good for business.

What is your biggest accomplishment within your workplace, school or community? Maintaining balance between family (with three children under six) and school while still managing to stay on the dean’s list.

What did you learn along the way while achieving this? I had always thought of myself as a procrastinator but, having a new baby and two young children, I learned to study whenever I got a free minute not just at the last minute. I also learned to make the most of time I had to spend with my family and not worry so much about little things.

In 10 years, none of us will remember if the laundry was put away but we will remember cuddling on the couch and reading. I learned that it is never too late to change your habits and change your entire outlook and approach.

To what do you contribute your success to date? First off, God, for all the blessings in my life. My family and friends for all the support and encouragement that they give me. My parents for instilling me with a serious work ethic.

And most of all my husband. He is truly my partner in all things. He was one of the first people that encouraged me to look into nursing school.

What is the largest obstacle you have overcome to achieve what you have thus far? Fitting behind my desk for my chemistry final less than a week from my third child’s due date. But honestly, it would be getting over the guilt of leaving my new baby to go back Page 28

to school. He was only two weeks old when my second semester started. I just made sure to make the most of the time we did share together.

Where do you see yourself in five to 10 years? I would love to be working in a hospital, caring for patients here in Fort Wayne. I want to be a nurse like the ones I have been lucky enough to learn from. I want to make a difference in a patient’s day, and be there for the family as well. I also see myself and my family doing missions to areas in need, whether in the states or abroad to provide clinics, immunizations and other health care needs. I want my children to grow up exposed to the fact that there are people all over that have far less than they do. I want them to develop a sense of empathy and duty to contribute.

If you could work in one TV sitcom office, which would it be? Does the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. quinjet count as an office? That’s what I would choose.

What is a millennial stereotype that fits you? I don’t see a particular career as a lifelong commitment, it’s a starting point and a learning experience.

I graduated from the Art Institute of Seattle with a degree in fashion design.

I had managed a small boutique. I had designed, handcrafted and wholesaled my own jewelry line. I had opened my own clothing boutique in Maine featuring

local designers and managed to stay afloat during the economic crisis. But I didn’t let that keep me in a career that I no longer found satisfying or meaningful.

When I made the decision to go to school for nursing, I was completely out of my comfort zone, but I took it as a challenge and seized every opportunity to prove that I belonged there as much as anyone.

What is the most misunderstood aspect of the millennial generation in your opinion? That we all have a sense of entitlement. Honestly, I think every generation says that about the one that comes after. I have worked hard all my life. I have had a legitimate, pay-stub earning job since I was 14 and, before that, I babysat all the neighborhood kids.

Why should a company hire a millennial in your opinion? Most millennials are old enough to have had lots of different life experiences. We were raised as part of a generation that questioned authority. We sought out our own truths. A career is about passion, and making a difference, but also about the quality of life it can offer. Quality of life is not defined by a paycheck, but the ability to enjoy life with friends and family. Millennials don’t see themselves as too good for a certain job, and know how to make the most out of any situation.

Millennial volunteering trumps “me” stereotype The rumors are true. Millennials are socially conscious, and this social consciousness forces millennials to have an understanding that a social status is important in the community.

The one way millennials can ensure a positive social status is by networking with peers and leaders through volunteer work.

However, there’s more than social status to encourage millennials to volunteer.

The millennial generation continues to battle the “me generation” stereotypes.

This battle can often be a tough one in both professional and personal arenas.

According to the U.S Department of Labor, in 2014, volunteer rates among 20- to 24-year-olds was at 18 percent. For teenagers, ages 16-19, the volunteer rate was at 26 percent. For individuals 16-24, 26 percent volunteered for a religious organization.

So what gives millennials the motivation to do volunteer work? It’s the simple fact that volunteer opportunities are a way to socially connect with like-minded peers, which moves them beyond social networking to in-person action.

According to the Millennial Impact Research, 70 percent of millennials spent at least an hour volunteering their time to a cause they cared about, with more than one-third volunteering 11 hours or more.

Forty-five percent participated in a company-wide volunteer day; 32 percent used paid time off to volunteer; and 16 percent took unpaid time off to volunteer.

While millennials may change jobs more often than previous generations, they are still as generous with their time as previous generations when it comes to giving back to their communities.

But connecting to employees through charitable acts can build loyalty and retain workers.

A 2015 study conducted by the Indianapolis-based agency Achieve found that millennials are 25 percent more likely to donate to a cause if they see a boss or supervisor participate as well. However, when a millennial sees a coworker partici-

pate, the chances of the millennial participating increases to about 50 percent.

Millennials often want to feel a part of something bigger than themselves, so volunteering with a larger group of people is more enticing and productive. The research study also found that millennials want to be able to “leverage their skills” when volunteering.

Overall, experts recommend that employers consider offering a multitude of short volunteer opportunities throughout the year because, on average, millennials devote about 10 total hours to volunteer efforts per year. Millennials like the idea of shorter options, rather than simply doing one large project per year. When it comes to company sponsored charitable donations, millennials are more likely to participate if the company is willing to match a portion of the personal contribution.

Millennials like to see volunteerism rewarded in the workplace, whether that is through prize incentives, name recognition or a simple thank-you. It’s also been found that millennials advertise for a cause or organization on their personal social media or by sharing and signing petitions in addition to other forms of micro-volunteering.

For millennials’ employers, volunteer work provides a great opportunity to teach employees different skills. By offering online training in place of in-person training, it will attract more millennials to the company, with the added benefit of allowing participants to train and serve anywhere.

The incoming generation to the

workplace feels that every minute spent on a project should be achieving something greater. Secondly, if a business offers a volunteer program with which millennial employees can connect, it allows the team and company to build a relationship.

Through the volunteer programs, employers can facilitate networking for millennials to maximize this generation’s inherent social connectedness. Designing programming with this benefit in mind will ultimately help retain young professionals and give them opportunities to broaden their skill sets among groups of people invested in the same issue.

When you consider the phrase “it only takes one to make a difference,” think about how no matter what age group you fall into, inviting a friend to join you in a volunteer effort could truly create a ripple effect. Who knows, maybe millennials can even lead the charge and continue overcoming the “me generation” stereotype.

Millennials are choosing northeast Indiana Everyone has a choice in where they live, and no demographic has taken more advantage of that than millennials.

I was met with this choice when I graduated from Ball State University in May 2013. I began considering moving back to northeast Indiana or relocating.

Nearly 62 percent of millennials in northeast Indiana indicated they intended to leave the region, according to a 2012 study by the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership and Millennial 2020.

In recent years, that number has begun to decline with more millennials deciding to stay or return to our region, or to move to northeast Indiana from other parts of the state, and even the country. It’s clear to see that the progress being made in our region is not going unnoticed by the folks ages 18-34.

So what attracts millennials to northeast Indiana? Our region has emerged as a contender among other areas that have long drawn talent away from our area. The millennial generation is once again a growing community in the northeast Indiana region, according to the Community Research Institute at IPFW. This is due to a growing job market, a cost of living that is below the national average, the promise of progression and a growing list of things to do in the area.

According to Kristin Weunsch, a millennial and young professional working at Lincoln Financial Group, staying in northeast Indiana post-college is a decision of which she is proud.

“I choose to live in northeast Indiana for a variety of reasons,” Weunsch said. “For young professionals looking for a nice mixture of big city and small town, it is the perfect place to be. I get a taste of city life by living in Fort Wayne and working downtown, but can easily escape to a more serene location in a short drive to the surrounding area, such as my family’s lake in Noble County.

“Northeast Indiana has also made a lot of commitments to the community it regards to growth and community development that is exciting to see, and exciting to be a part of. Support and involvement from corporations in community projects also make for great networking opportunities for young professionals looking to develop their careers.”

Community progress is encouraging too, thanks to development initiatives. Riverfront Fort Wayne is working to transform downtown Fort Wayne’s riverfront space into a regional destination through usable space for business and recreation.

Another action item is the Regional Cities Initiative. By creating dynamic communities that attract and retain talent the region is taking bold steps

to change the approach of economic development in our area.

Both of these projects are big commitments to our region as a whole, and a promise that northeast Indiana will continue to change and grow as millennials begin to play a large role in northeast Indiana’s future.

Programs geared towards millennials are also making a difference in our region. Young Leaders of Northeast Indiana and the Millennial Leaders Alliance appeal to my generation’s desire to invest in the community in which they live in. Millennials, more than any other generation, value immersing themselves in their communities for both their professional and personal lives, according to a 2014 study by the Council of Economic Advisors.

Both YLNI and the MLA work with millennials in northeast Indiana to get involved the region and take pride in where they live and work through professional development and community relations.

As northeast Indiana continues to make commitments to improving our communities, millennials will follow.

Strides are being taken to show that our region is capable of growth, making the choice easy for millennials to call northeast Indiana their home.

Low-cost perks can attract and keep Gen Y Ask millennials what they love about their workplaces and you might be surprised by what you hear.

You might hear about perks such as flexible schedules, weekly breakfast for employees and free gym memberships. But gone are the baby boomer days when salary and insurance coverage were the sole benefits that drove job loyalty.

Why is it so important to recognize the desires of the working millennials?

For one, they’re job-hoppers and employers need to work to keep them happy. A 2014 study from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that people 18 to 26 held an average of six jobs from 1998 to 2011.

Also, this year, millennials will overtake baby boomers in the workplace.

Luckily for businesses, it’s not difficult to implement the changes in workplace culture that are necessary to retain millennials. The tips we suggest won’t break the bank, either.

When companies recognize which benefits their young employees’ value, millennials will join their ranks and stay.

Here are five desired benefits and perks to keep the millennials in your office happy: • Offsite events: Company-organized events are a great way to encourage better working relationships among employees. A 2014 study conducted by LinkedIn showed that friendships in the workplace make millennials feel happy, motivated and productive. Young professional groups, food trucks, tailgating in the parking lot and more are all ideas implemented by companies in the past.

• Summer Fridays: Some offices shut down on Fridays after noon from Memorial Day through Labor Day, allowing their employees to take long weekends. Some offices aren’t even open on Fridays during the summer. This might be balanced by longer office hours Monday through Thursday, or with the stipulation that clients can reach the employee by phone, whether they are in a cubicle or on a beach.

• Relaxed dress code: A relaxed dress code year-round, or on certain days of the week, can boost employees’ productivity in the workplace and doesn’t cost the company a dime to implement. You can be as detailed or as liberal with the policy as it suits your business.

• Telecommuting: Today’s telecommuting looks very different from just a few years ago. With the development of tools like Dropbox and Skype, and the majority of the population now owning smartphones, employees can work anywhere, anytime. By allowing them to occasionally or regularly work remotely, millennial employees can focus on their projects with minimal distraction.

• Flexible schedule: A flexible schedule is a greatly desired low-cost benefit for all employees. According to a survey conducted by Ernst &

Young’s Global Generations Research, millennials are more likely to live in a dual-income household than any other generation before. Only 47 percent of baby boomers have a full-time working spouse. Flexible schedules allow millennial employees to take care of household duties, bring their aging parents to appointments and pick up their kids from daycare.

And, millennials do make up the time later. RingCentral’s 2014 survey found that 70 percent work up to 20 hours or more outside the office each week. The flexible schedule is a win-win. Employees get the work and life balance they desire, while being grateful and loyal to their employer as a result.

Millennials follow the benefits that appeal to them, and that high rate of turnover is expensive for business.

Eighty-seven percent of companies said it cost $15,000 to $25,000 to replace a departed millennial employee, according to a 2013 survey conducted by consulting firm Millennial Branding and the online career network beyond.com.

Millennials also are quickly becoming the new leaders of their companies as boomers begin to retire in droves. It is important to retain young employees so that they have knowledge of the company and relevant experience when it is time for them to join its leadership.

Millennials are speaking up Millennials want what every other employee who has gone through your company wants - they want to be heard, according to a study conducted by WorkplaceTrends.com.

Parking a millennial at a desk to just play on Twitter all day as your social media person isn’t going to make a young professional satisfied. Instead, employers can think outside the box and include millennials in leadership discussions.

There are many ways to engage millennials in the workplace. You could let a them sit in on company-wide marketing strategies where they have the opportunity to contribute to why social media is important to your company or you can empower them to become the in-house social media guru.

In addition to engagement, millennials consider the company’s mission, salary, benefits and even office culture. All of those are top priorities for a millennials too.

If you’re not paying your talent, don’t have a little bit of fun and you’re not involved in “the greater good” with your mission, then you might have a difficult time retaining millennial talent.

So where can your company start? It all starts with leadership. If the leadership can’t take the time to make your millennial employee feel welcomed or valued, then no one ever will. Again, it’s important for millennials to be heard.

At the end of the day, millennials just want to be treated as professionals and as a value to the company. Millennials are not kids anymore. They are professionals. Yes, they might do things a little bit differently, but in end, everyone is working toward the same goal.
