Memorial Day is for the men and women who paid the ultimate price so that we can be free. And those who served, home and abroad, to protect the freedoms we so cherish.

In this special section we remember those who served. We are thankful for their commitment, their spirit and their

dedication to duty and country.

Please take the opportunity to read through this section and admire those whose memory this section is dedicated to. And as a service to you, there’s a list of services being held in the four-county area so you might go out and show your support for those who have served and those who have gone before us in service.

Their legacy lives on and it is our privilege to share it with you.

Memorial Day services being held throughout the area KPC NEWS SERVICE

Memorial Day services will be held throughout northeast Indiana this weekend. Unless noted, observances take place on Monday.

Albion A special Memorial Day parade will begin at 11 a.m. The parade will lead to Rose Hill Cemetery for special services.

Immediately following the ceremonies at the cemetery, the public is invited to attend a dedication ceremony for the new sign on S.R. 8. The American Legion Post 246 estimates the sign dedication will take place at 12:30 p.m.

Following that dedication, the public is invited to attend special dedication ceremonies at the Legion for a new flag pole and statue of a large eagle at its base.

Angola Services in Angola will take place on the mound in the center of the Public Square at 9 a.m. The American Legion Post 31 is in charge of the

event that will feature past Legion Commander Robert Cook and 4th District Commander Tom Frederick as the speakers.

The Angola Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7205 will hold a service at 2 p.m. that will feature a luncheon for members and guests.

Auburn A Memorial Day service will take place at 11 a.m. on the southwest corner of the DeKalb County Courthouse in Auburn. The event is sponsored by the American Legion Post 97 of Auburn.

Butler Butler Cemetery, C.R. 28, east of Butler, 11:30 a.m. will host a service.

Guest speaker is Pastor Christine Fodrea of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, Butler.

was a co-pilot on B-29’s in the Pacific.

Civil War hero made Memorial Day official

Memorial Day celebrations began to spring up on local levels just after the Civil War. But a Civil War hero from Illinois was the first to make it official.

Maj. Gen. John A. Logan, one of the great volunteer officers of the war, is credited by many as the first to declare Memorial Day an official holiday. Logan declared an official holiday as commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, the foremost Civil War veterans’ organization, in 1868.

Though Logan was the first to establish a national remembrance, there is considerable debate on the site of the actual first Memorial Day commemoration. “There’s a lot of controversy on that,” said Michael Jones, director of the Gen. John A. Logan Museum in Murphysboro, Ill. “There was a Memorial Day celebration in Woodlawn Cemetery in nearby Carbondale in which Logan was the keynote speaker, and I believe that played a role.”

The Carbondale celebration, on April 29, 1866, is thought by many to be the nation’s first community-wide observance.

Some 212 area veterans participated in the event.

However, Jones notes a discrepancy on the inspiration for Logan’s action even within his own family. In her autobiography Reminisces of a Soldier’s Wife, Logan’s wife Mary cites her own experience at a cemetery in Petersburg, Va. in 1868.

“Mrs. Logan saw the withered flowers and flags that had been placed in honor of the Confederates buried there,” remarked Jones. “She described this to her husband and said he should do something similar, which she says was the basis for his national declaration. She never mentions the Carbondale event.”

Whatever the reason, Logan was moved to take Memorial Day a step further. On May 5, 1868, he issued General Order No. 11, designating May 30 for “the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion.”

uals and communities were left to their own “fitting services and testimonials… cherishing tenderly the memory of our heroic dead.”

In the first year of Logan’s declaration, an estimated 183 cemeteries hosted observances for Memorial Day, more commonly known as Decoration Day. A crowd of some 5,000, including keynote speaker and future President James A. Garfield, attended the first Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery that May 30. The following year, the remembrance was marked in over 336 communities in thirty-one states.

While the original order clearly applied to Northern soldiers, informal commemorations in the South became some of the earliest Memorial Day observances. Recent scholarly research also reveals a mass celebration, mostly of African-Americans, in Charleston, S.C. on May 1, 1865.

There, a parade of some 10,000, including black Union infantry units,

marched to a local horse track that had been converted to a prison for Union soldiers. Black workmen had re-buried at least 257 Union dead from a mass grave, inspiring the large gathering that included hymns, reading of scripture, and placing of flowers.

In 1864, women in Boalsburg, Pa. decorated the graves of their local dead soldiers, some whom had died at Gettysburg. On April 25, 1866, just days before the Carbondale celebration, a group of ladies in Columbus, Miss. placed flowers on the graves of Confederates who died at the battle of Shiloh. Noticing some nearby Union graves that had been neglected due to lingering animosities, they also laid some flowers to honor those soldiers.

On May 5, 1866, the town of Waterloo, N.Y. began an annual community event to commemorate war dead. A century later, President Lyndon Johnson and Congress declared Waterloo as the “birthplace” of Memorial Day.

In 1967, Congress officially named May 30 as Memorial Day, though many elderly Americans still refer to the holiday by its traditional name, Decoration Day. Four years later, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act switched the holiday to the final Monday in May. Though Memorial Day has become a three-day weekend and the kickoff to summer for many, thousands of communities from coast to coast still Jones sees parallels in today’s Memorial Day celebrations and the deeper meaning of Logan’s General Order No. 11. “I think Logan’s primary purpose was his fear, which is shared by many of us,” remarked Jones, “that all of the veterans would be forgotten. He wanted to ensure that we will still honor the men who died to keep the republic.”

starts with a parade lining up at the Post Office then heading at 10 a.m. to Toledo Street to Wayne Street, stopping at the Cassell Post of the American Legion.

Former state Rep. Dick Dodge will be the speaker. The Legion color guard will perform services in cemeteries in the Fremont community starting at 8 a.m. at Jamestown, followed by Lakeside, Fremont and Covenanter.

Hamilton The Hamilton services starts at 11 a.m. at the four-way stop in the downtown. The observance then proceeds to the Hamilton Cemetery. The observance is directed by the Hamilton American Legion.

Howe Howe’s Memorial Day service will be conducted at Riverside Cemetery starting at 9 a.m.

Pleasant Lake

American Legion Post 178 of Garrett is sponsoring a Memorial Day service at 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 29, to honor all veterans.

Pleasant Lake’s Memorial Day program will be held at 10 a.m. at Pleasant Lake Elementary School, sponsored by the Pleasant Lake Lions Club. The ceremony will be conducted by the Angola American Legion Post.

Steuben County Veterans Service Officer Alex Dobson will be the speaker.

Kendallville American Legion Post 86 in Kendallville is hosting a Memorial Day Service Monday at 11 a.m. at the post at 322 S. Main St.

Kimmell-Ligonier Memorial Day commemorations will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Sparta Cemetery in Kimmell, where a service will be held. Post members will then move to Oak Park Cemetery in Ligonier for an 11 a.m. program.

At noon, American Legion members will continue an annual tradition by throwing a ceremonial wreath into the Elkhart River from Bridge Street in honor of those who served in the U.S. Navy.

LaGrange LaGrange’s service will take place in Greenwood Cemetery and start at 11 a.m.

Rome City Rome City American Legion Post 381 is hosting a Memorial Day Service Sunday at 1 p.m. at Orange Township Cemetery near Rome City.

St. Joe The St. Joe service will be held at Riverside Cemetery, St. Joe, at 10 a.m.

Guest speaker state Sen. Dennis Kruse, R-Auburn.

A service will also be Alton Cemetery, S.R. 101, St. Joe. This service is at Noon Sunday. Guest speaker U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Brandon Parkison (Ret.) The cemetery is located on S.R. 101, just north of C.R. 64.

Ways to celebrate veterans

BY METRO NEWS SERVICE Memorial Day is celebrated each May to commemorate the people who died in service of the United States of America.

Even though barbecues and visions of the upcoming summer weather may command much of the attention come Memorial Day weekend, the holiday really serves as a remembrance for those military members who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country, as well as the personnel who continue to protect and serve today.

Memorial Day origins Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day and was borne out of the Civil War. on May 30, 1868, General John Logan, a national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, decreed General Order No. 11, which designated the day for the “purpose of strewing

with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.” May 30 was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.

It took several years for the first state to recognize the holiday, which New York adopted in 1873. By 1890, all northern states recognized Decoration Day. When the holiday changed from commemorating those who died fighting the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war after World War I, the South began to recognize it as well.

Honoring the military Although Memorial Day pays homage

to the brave people who perished fighting for their country, it also is an opportunity to recognize the military men and women and their families who continue to work to ensure the freedom of Americans.

The United States Armed Forces is renowned for its size and strength.

Various sources suggest the size of the United States military is somewhere between 1.4 and 1.6 million active service people. The military is comprised of the Army, Army National Guard, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. Each of these military branches also has its own reserves.

There are many ways to honor active, reserve and former veterans, as well as those who died in service of their country: • Help Veterans of Foreign Wars distribute red poppies as a visual

reminder of the military’s efforts.

• Volunteer at a veterans’ hospital or visit a wounded veteran at home.

• Offer financial, legal or career expertise through the Corporation for National & Community Service (serve.gov).

• Help to maintain the veteran area of a nearby cemetery. Place flags on all of the graves.

• Befriend military families who frequently relocate, making a concerted effort to welcome them into your community.

• Educate children about past wars and the services the military provides.

• Visit a military museum or historic site.

• Observe the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 pm local time for one minute.

• Post a message to the troops at the USO website (uso.org).
