Paintball is a blast.

Many people participate in the sport, which has gained in popularity over the years.

Swimming options open for the summer

With summer just around the corner, the weather is finally starting to warm, and with that, local swimming spots are readying for their first visitors.

Northeast Indiana is fortunate to have a multitude of public beaches, community pools and splash pads for residents and visitors to enjoy for free or at a nominal cost.

Here is a list of of choices for those wanting a respite from the office or their home to take advantage of water recreation or just to bask in the sun.

NOBLE COUNTY Chain O’ Lakes State Park, 2355 East C.R. 75S, Albion: Beach is open from 11 a.m. to dusk. Admission is $7 per carload

for Indiana residents, and $9 per carload for out-of-state residents.

Bixler Lake Park, 1650 Lake Park Drive, Kendallville: Beach lifeguards are on duty part-time, and swimming at any other time is at the swimmer’s own risk. Admission is free for Kendallville residents, and $3 per carload for non-residents.

Area paintballers in need of some summer fun and games need look no further than Paintball PLEX, 6485 Merchants Dr., LaOtto.

Paintball PLEX offers a fully stocked pro shop with full lines of scenario and tournament style paintball products.

When they are hit their hand and gun go up and they will tag the starting box to re-enter the game. The game is five minutes long.

• Gladiator — Teams will go to the starting box or net for barrel and put their guns down right by it. The teams will go to the 50 and lay down facing their guns. Players can not touch or grab each other when they pop up and race back for their guns. It will be a five minute/no crossing 50/respond or zombies for the rest of the game.

• Iron Man — In this game they go until they can’t go on anymore; either

they run out of paint, run out of air, or it just hurts too much. If players are shot they can keep on playing without having to respond. It will be a six minute/no crossing 50 game.

Paintball PLEX does not allow carry-in of paintballs. You must purchase all ammunition at the complex.

Apocalypse Games, Angola, no longer has a playing field, but owner Tony Worthington said the store is still open. “The new stock is down to minimal, but we’re still here.” If someone needs something, he’s just a call away.

Get your kids outdoors and playing A boyhood buddy of mine passed away last year.

When I think about Mike even today my thoughts go back to those carefree times when we played outdoors on our own with no adult supervision, exploring new things, working out our differences, learning right from wrong and discovering what we loved to do.

We became sensitive to others’ inabilities and INSIDE emotions. We chose up COMMENT teams on our own and had fun doing it. “Not fair. You got all the Dennis Nartker big guys.” We became leaders, and accepted others as our leaders.

Kids today have replaced outdoor play with sedentary pursuits such as computer-based games, texting, instagramming even though it’s a sunny, warm summer day, according to Melinda Southern, professor of health promotion at Louisiana State University Health Sciences School of Public Health in New Orleans.

Mike Maxson was one of my neighborhood friends while growing up in Kendallville in the 1950s and 1960s. He was the older brother of Brad Maxson, and together the three of us ruled the Lake Park Drive area. I spent a lot of time at the Maxson house. After school, on weekends and on summer days I walked out the door from Park Avenue home telling my mother I was going to the Maxsons; I was going to the movies with Mike and Brad; or I was going to the lake with the Maxsons.

Her reply was “be home for supper.”

Off I went for a fun day outdoors at the lake, in the park, at the movies, on bikes riding around town and with no adult telling us what we could or could not do and watching our every move.

Mike, Brad and I often played basketball on an outdoor court behind Dr. Robert Bryan’s Lake Park Drive house.

Mike liked to dribble and attack the basket and I liked to block his shot.

He tried different moves to get around me, and I learned to adjust and still block his lay-ups without fouling him or so I thought. We called our own fouls.

This led to differences of opinion. “I stuffed you,” was my argument. “You hacked me on the arm,” was his contention. We managed to compromise on our own and the game continued.

many parents are controlling their kids activities. Parents tell their children where they should be, what time they should be there and what time they will be picked up.

No more do kids ride their bikes to the movies. The Strand Theatre in downtown Kendallville had a bike rack when I was growing up. There were bike racks in the park, at the lake and at schools.

Last year in Maryland a family was pursued by the Child Protective Services because two of their children, ages 6 and 10, were allowed to walk home from the park two blocks from their house.

Three years ago a mother in Houston was arrested for child endangerment.

She was accused of abandoning her children who were riding scooters in the street at the end of a cul-de-sac.

A Virginia mother was interrogated by police for allowing her children to play in their own yard unsupervised.

In each of these cases a neighbor reported the observations to police.

Free, unscheduled play for children has taken a back seat, and can even lead to a criminal offense.

What has happened to those good old days when one of Deputy Barney Fife’s responsibilities was watching the bikes at the Mayberry movie house on Saturday afternoons? At the Strand Theatre on Saturday afternoons, there were so many bikes they blocked the sidewalk.

What has happened to those times

that if you broke a window in a house while playing baseball in the next door vacant lot, you paid for a new window with your weekly allowance? Do kids get allowances anymore?

Remember the 1993 movie “The Sandlot?” The vacant lot next to the Maxson house was our sandlot with its worn base paths and declared home runs for balls hit into the street.

Peter Gray, a research professor at Boston College, and author of “Free to Learn,” wrote for Psychology Today: “By depriving children of opportunities to play on their own, away from direct adult supervision, we are depriving them of opportunities to learn how to take control of their lives.

About one-fourth of children ages 6-15 have moderate activity for 60 minutes a day for five or more days a week, according to data from the CDC’s National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey. about 42 percent of kids ages 6-11 get at least 60 minutes of moderate activity but only 8 percent of kids 12-15 get that level.

Here’s a suggestion for parents to encourage their kids to spend time in some unstructured activity play in good weather. Tell them to put their iPhone, iPod, iPad or computer gaming device in an open box at the front door and go outside and play for an hour. They may give quizzical looks as if to say “I don’t get it,” but show them their fishing pole, bicycle, skateboard, baseball glove, the horseshoes or Jarts game and sidewalk chalk and then the front door.

AUBURN — The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 87,111 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in 2017.

With concerning statistics such as these, taking care of people’s skin is a top priority especially in the hot summer sun.

The skin is the body’s largest organ, which protects against heat, sunlight, injury and infection, says the National Cancer Institute. It also regulates body temperature and stores water and vitamin D. The risk of melanoma, a form of skin cancer, increases as people age, with the average age of diagnosis at 63. Melanoma does not discriminate and is one of the most common cancers in young adults, especially women.

Almost 10,000 people are expected to die of melanoma this year.

Using these simple tips will help keep skin healthy and reduce people’s chances of skin cancer.

What’s the best method for grilling corn on the cob?

Summer in Indiana is about one thing and one thing only: Corn.

The old Indiana Beach slogan used to purport “There’s more than corn in Indiana!” That’s simply a lie. Yes, there are soybeans, too, but nobody looks forward to eating soybeans. Indiana is only good for corn.

THE Maybe Indy car racing, GARBACZ if you’re into that, which DUMP you’re probably not because it’s a niche sport.

Steve Garbacz If you’re like me, the vast majority of your summer meals will be cooked on your grill. And you’re going to want to eat corn, because, as mentioned before, it’s the best Indiana has to offer.

So the question arises: What’s the best way to grill your corn?

Honestly, I’m not sure.

I know the way I’ve always done it, but

is it the best way? I don’t know, because I’ve never tried other methods. In order to settle this question, I’m going to do something slightly blasphemous. I’m going to use science. (Gasp!)

The experiment: Test four methods of grilling corn to determine which ear turns out the tastiest.

Methodology: Four similar-sized ears of corn will be purchased from the local grocery store. (Fresher corn is better, but it’s easier to just get it from the store). All four earns will be grilled on my Weber Spirit E-210 propane gas grill. They will all be cooked at the same heat. Ears will be rotated along the grates every time I turn them every 4-5 minutes in order to compensate for heat bias. (The rear and middle of my grill tend to be the hottest.)

They will all spend equal time in each position before being turned a quarter turn.

Evaluation: Corn will be evaluated by a taste test performed by myself and my wife Ashley at dinner.

This (I assume) would help steam the corn inside the husk as water heats and evaporates.

3. Naked corn — Shucked and cleaned, then laid bare upon the grill grates.

4. Corn in foil — Corn will be shucked and cleaned, wrapped in a layer of aluminum foil, then placed on the grill.

Results: 1. Corn in husk — The husk got charred but the corn inside didn’t. After shucking (corn remained very hot even after several minutes off the grill), the kernels were plump, juicy and flavorful.

2. Corn in husk, pre-soaked — Like the other in-husk corn, the husk was burnt but the corn inside was clear of char.

Again, the kernels of corn were plump and juicy. My wife said she thought the corn tasted slightly blander, possibly from the soaking, although I thought it was still very flavorful.

3. Naked corn — The corn took on some char from being directly on the grill, creating a few browned or blacked bits.

Overall, the direct heat caused many of the kernels to shrivel and harden. This was definitely the toughest ear and had lost flavor compared to other ears.

4. Corn in foil — The corn didn’t char, but did begin to brown a little from the heat trapped inside the foil. Like the naked corn, cooking in foil seemed to cause the kernels to tighten, creating a harder bite that wasn’t nearly as flavorful.

The winner: Corn in husk Go figure. The easiest way — doing absolutely nothing to the corn except tossing it on the grill — seemed to turn out the best.

The corn was plump and flavorful and you can wrap a paper towel around the peeled-back husk to use as a handle. The only downside was that peeling back the burnt husk and silk was slightly messy, but you’re outside anyway so it doesn’t really make a huge difference. While I thought soaking the corn also created a good product, there wasn’t much noticeable difference between doing nothing, so you might as well just cut the extra step.

if you turn more often and cook for less time. But for this experiment, in-husk corn turned out far superior.

So as far as this experiment goes, plopping that corn on the grill is your best bet.

LAKE JAMES — Over the years there have been many unique boat names that have stood out on the lakes of northeast Indiana.

There are always the obvious that have to do with water. Or the others that relate to the cost of boating. (Remember the joke: What’s the definition of a boat?

A hole in the water you throw money into.)

Some names are personal. A youngster from Fort Wayne named Heath had his fishing boat christened “Candy Man” by his grandparents. The youngster is now a grown man but the Candy Man can still be seen on the waters of Snow Lake.

There was a classic Correct Craft that used to ply the waters of Steuben County with a name that was a play off the popular ski boat model, Ski Nautique.

The classic was called “Ski Antique.”

A boat name can reveal much about the personality of a boat owner. Are they into fishing? Reel Therapy on the boat’s transom certainly shows it. Do they have kids in school? What College Fund? says it best. Like to sing? In Harmony is a popular choice. Work in the finance industry? Liquid Assets is suitable.

Regardless of lifestyles, families or careers, choosing a name can be difficult.

Fun around the pool is par for the course come summer. But fun must be balanced with safety when swimming.

Beating the heat in a pool is one of the most popular warm-weather activities. Swimming attracts people of all ages because of its various benefits.

In addition to being an enjoyable recreational activity, swimming also is a low-impact way to exercise. Having a backyard pool makes swimming and outdoor fun that much easier.

Although exact numbers are difficult to come by, various sources indicate there are approximately 4.5 million residential swimming pools across the United States. While it once was relatively rare to find a backyard swimming pool in Canada, things have changed — especially in Quebec. No other province comes close to matching Quebec for backyard pools, which has well over 300,000 backyard pools, more than Ontario (which has five million more people). Quebec also has more pools per capita than almost anywhere else in North America according to numbers compiled by Pool & Spa Marketing magazine.

Unfortunately, young children have the highest risk of pool injury or drowning, with more than 200 youngsters drowning in swimming pools each year.

The American Red Cross and National Swimming Pool Foundation® have partnered to educate home pool users.

The following guidelines are important when adults and children are enjoying the pool.

• Create barriers. Preventing accidental drowning means removing easy access to pools. Pools should be surrounded by secure fencing with an automatically latching gate. Fences should not be accessible by climbing.

Extra precautions like installing a safety cover on inground pools and removing or securing ladders when the pool is not in use can help as well.

• Establish rules. Each pool owner should establish their own set of rules for the pool. These can include “no running around the pool,” “no diving in a shallow pool” and “no riding toys at poolside.” Pool owners can customize rules as they pertain to safety issues in their yards.

• Maintain constant supervision.

People of any age can drown. That is why it’s always safest for swimmers to swim with a buddy or with someone watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics says an adult should be in the water and within arm’s reach when infants and toddlers are swimming.

This is known as “touch supervision.”

For older children, an adult should be paying constant attention and remain free from distractions, like talking on the phone, socializing, tending to household chores, or drinking alcohol.

• Use approved flotation devices.

Individuals who do not know how to swim should rely on a Coast Guard-approved flotation device. Water wings and general pool floats are not adequate, especially in situations that requires someone to be saved.

• Take swimming lessons. Knowing how to swim will not entirely remove the risk of drowning, but it certainly can reduce it. Many swim programs teach water survival skills as well as general swimming techniques.

Gardeners must exercise caution when tending to their gardens during the dog days of summer.

Gardening is widely considered as relaxing a hobby as it is rewarding.

Although gardening when temperatures are mild, such as in spring and fall, can be relaxing, gardening can be much more physically taxing and even dangerous when temperatures rise during the dog days of summer.

Gardens need tending even when temperatures outside are especially hot, so gardeners must take steps to protect their health when working in their gardens during the summer.

• Stay hydrated. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water is something gardeners must do to stay safe when gardening in summer. Water carries heat away from internal organs, helping to prevent heat stroke along the way. Water takes heat through the bloodstream to the skin, resulting in sweat. Gardeners who notice they are not sweating despite the heat should drink more water and even head indoors to cool down. In addition, the American Heart Association notes that keeping the body hydrated helps the heart pump blood more easily, making gardening less taxing on the heart on hot days.

• Take frequent breaks indoors or in shady areas. Limit marathon gardening sessions to spring and fall when the weather permits. When gardening in

harsh summertime heat, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises gardeners to take frequent breaks.

Head inside to air conditioned rooms, if necessary, or find shady areas to sit, relax and drink some water. Sitting in the shade will give the body’s thermostat a chance to recover from exposure to extreme heat.

• Take note of your physical condition. Many people garden alone, so it’s important that gardeners learn the symptoms of heat-related illnesses.

The CDC notes that elevated body temperatures, headache, rapid pulse, dizziness, nausea, and/or confusion are some common symptoms of heat-related illnesses. Gardeners should go indoors the moment any such symptoms appear.

• Garden during the cooler parts of the day. Lawncare professionals advise against watering lawns between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the summertime, as water is more likely to evaporate during this time, which tends to be the hottest time of the day. Gardeners should avoid working in their gardens during these hours as well. Garden in the early morning hours when the sun is not burning as hot or in late afternoon or early evening hours when temperatures are less threatening.

Gardening in summer requires gardeners to exercise caution and assess their physical conditions routinely and honestly.

Comedian Jim Gaffigan often jokes that camping is a tradition in his wife’s family, but he’s what people would consider “indoorsy.” Gaffigan notes that the idea of burning a couple of vacation days sleeping on the ground outside isn’t his idea of fun. But the comic may be in the minority.

Camping is one of the most popular outdoor recreational activities in North America. The statistics resource Statistica says the revenue of campgrounds and RV parks was estimated at $5.8 billion in 2015. More than $2.5 billion was relegated to camping equipment spending.

In Canada, National Park attendance is typically indicative of camping stays.

Parks Canada said there was a 4 percent increase in overall visitation between 2009 and 2014.

Camping takes many forms. Some purists equate camping to minimalist survival — eking out an existence for a few days with nothing more than a tent, a single roll of toilet paper and a fishing pole. Others enjoy the creature comforts

of home and would readily consider camping something done from their climate controlled RV. Camping ranges between sleeping under the open stars and glamping — a style of camping with amenities and potentially resort-style services. No matter how one defines camping, information is the key to becoming the proverbial “happy camper.” The following list is a general starting off point for planning a camping adventure.

• Not all campsites are equal. When choosing a campsite, seek an area that offers the amenities you desire. Popular places like lakeside spots or those close to trails tend to book up early.

Also, consider proximity to bathrooms, showers and ingress/egress spots. People who desire solitude will pick different campsites than those who want to be near the family action.

• Choose a tent for the weather.

Supplies will differ depending on the temperatures when you plan to camp.

Select a tent with a sun-protection sealant to prolong its longevity. Opt for

a location with partial afternoon shade to keep the campsite and tent cool. Face the tent door into the wind for a breeze (and also to keep mosquitoes from camping alongside you). Speak with a camping supply retailer about your camping needs.

• Bring along low-salt, high-protein snacks. Low-salt, high-protein snacks will keep you fueled for day trips along the trails without making you thirsty. Dried berries and high-fiber trail mixes also can keep energy levels up.

• Invest in an insulating pad. A good insulating pad will keep you comfortable when sleeping on the ground. Such a pad also will serve as an extra moisture barrier and will help keep you warm or cool.

• Use the moon. If this is your first time camping, schedule the night out to coincide with a full moon. There will be extra light at night to chase away any fears and make navigating a bit easier.

• Be an early bird. To see wildlife, hit the trails as early as possible. Early morning hours also are cooler for working.

Protect pets through the dog days of summer METRO CREATIVE CONNECTION

When the warm weather arrives, conscientious pet owners typically reevaluate how to care for their pets. As the seasons change, so may a pet’s needs, and different safety precautions might be necessary.

Warm weather seasons are many people’s favorite time of year. Pets, too, enjoy the benefits of the warm weather, including more opportunities to frolic outside. But the sunshine and hot weather that is synonymous with the summer season can prove treacherous to some pets.

Although the hot-weather months are sometimes called “the dog days of summer,” that doesn’t mean that your dog enjoys them. According to “Dogs in Antiquity: Anubis to Cerebrus: The Origins of the Domestic Dog,” by Douglas Brewer, Sir Terence Clark, and Adrian Phillips, the term “dog days of summer” was coined by the ancient Greeks and Romans actually to describe the hottest days of summer that coincided with the rising of the Dog Star, Sirius. It has nothing to do with dogs loving the summer. So keep in mind your pooch and other pets may not be acclimated to hot

weather and may suffer for it.

Dogs, cats and small animals who are left inside a hot car, even if just for a few minutes, can be susceptible to heat-related illness and even death. Dogs are particularly vulnerable to the heat because they can only cool off by panting and through the sweat glands in the pads of their feet.

Animal cruelty laws apply to just about anyone who endangers their animal’s life through negligence. Failure to take weather conditions into consideration may be a criminal act, depending on where a pet owner lives.

To avoid heat-related injury to a companion animal, keep these tips in mind. * Even on a day that seems mild, an enclosed car can reach deadly temperatures. A Stanford University study found that even when it was a mere 72 F outdoors, the interior temperature of a car reached 116 F within one hour.

Research further indicated that cracking the windows of the car had little effect on lowering the internal temperature of the vehicle. * Pets generally have a higher body temperature than people. A dog’s normal

body temperature, for example, is between 101 to 102.5 F. Being outside in the heat or locked inside a hot room can quickly bring that body temperature up. Nerve damage, liver damage, heart problems, and even death can occur if a dog’s body temperature rises just a little bit. * It is important to provide pets with extra water, as they may be more thirsty when it is hot outdoors. If you will be spending a day away from home, leave one or two bowls of water available and put in a few ice cubes, which will help keep the water cooler. * If your pet is outdoors, make sure he has plenty of access to shady areas in which to rest. A child’s wading pool can provide a respite from the heat as well. * Avoid walks and daily exercise during the hottest parts of the day. Try to reschedule these for early morning or early evening when things generally cool down.

Remember, pavement and sidewalks can be very hot and burn the delicate pads of the feet. * Discuss pet sunscreen products with a veterinarian. Animals with short hair or with white fur and pink skin may be more susceptible to sunburn and damage from

potentially harmful UV rays. * Be mindful of open windows and pet birds. It can be easy for birds to escape when a window is left open in the house, especially if your birds are given daily exercise outside of the cage. On another note, keep in mind that glass is virtually invisible to birds, and wild birds may collide with glass if windows are kept shut while the air conditioning is on. Glass reflects the images of trees, bushes and the sky, so a bird may fly directly into it. The United States. Fish and Wildlife Service offers that one of the greatest hazards to birds is plate glass, with windows in homes and offices killing as many as one billion birds each year. * Stay up-to-date with vaccinations, as biting insects, such as mosquitoes, ticks and flies, are more prevalent this time of year and can transmit diseases. * Avoid toxic gardening products if you and your pet frequently spend time in the yard. * Don’t assume your dog knows how to doggie paddle. Despite the name, not all pups have mastered this method of staying afloat. Keep in mind an unattended dog can drown.
