Water rates on the rise in S. Whitley By Derreck Stahly dstahly@kpcmedia.com

SOUTH WHITLEY — The South Whitley Town Council agreed April 13 to take legal action against Govan Associates, the engineering company it says is responsible for building its wastewater treatment plant too small. In 2010, the state

mandated that South Whitley increase the size of its wastewater treatment plant. In 2012, the town began the expansion project, which was completed a couple of years later. Soon after completion, concerns if its size arose. “There were a couple of big events that happened

that called into question if there was something wrong with the build,” said Randy Cokl, town council president. Cokl said the council went back to the engineering company to get these issues fixed. However, after the engineers addressed the issues there were still some

COLUMBIA CITY — Local residents had the opportunity to have an open conversation with U.S. Sen. Todd Young last week. Young was hosted by the Whitley County Republican Women’s Club at Big G’s Sports Cafe in Columbia City Friday morning, where Young he took a variety of questions from the crowd. “I’ve really enjoyed the time I’ve spent here in Whitley County,” Young said. “My intent is to go beyond —

visit people at work, learn about their concerns and aspirations, and talk about how we can help at the federal level.” Young had team members at the meeting to take notes about people’s concerns and perspectives, which he says is an important part of his job as senator. “I remain open to new opinions, information and perspectives,” Young said. “I do a lot of reading and listening, and that’s how I decide what positions to take, and what to focus my time on.” Young discussed a wide array of topics, including his views on tax structure, Social Security and more. “I’m loving the work right now — this is a dream job,” Young said. “We are working to drain the swamp. It’s slowly draining, but we still have a lot

COLUMBIA CITY — A project in the making for more than five years will finally come to fruition for Columbia City. The city completed fundraising for a new $4.2 million aquatics facility that will replace Burnworth Memorial Pool. The Russel and Evelyn Fahl Aquatics Facility will begin construction this year and, weather permitting, will be open for the 2018 season.

The city got word last week that it would receive the rest of the funds last week. “This is a huge win for our community,” said Columbia City Mayor Ryan Daniel. “There’s a lot of people who put a lot of time, effort and money into this project. It shows the true community spirit.” There will be no city pool in Columbia City this year, as Burnworth Pool is See POOL, Page 4
