GOOD MORNING Veterans forum planned at Angola Legion post ANGOLA — The Angola American Legion Post, 1760 W. Maumee St., will host a veterans forum on Saturday, Oct. 12. It is an informational session for all area veterans, but female veterans in particular are being encouraged to participate. The forum will start at 1 p.m. with Indiana state representatives on hand to answer questions. There will be veteran service officers, Work One, funeral care and Veteran’s Center representatives on hand as well. Michael Carrigan, executive committee member at Post No. 31, said the event is meant to “let veterans in the area know what services are available to them.” A similar forum was held several years ago and was attended by a number of area veterans. Not many women attended, however, and Carrigan said the post would like to get more northeastern Indiana female servicepeople involved.
Government powers down Your fault! No shutdown end; Democrats, Republicans trade blame WASHINGTON (AP) — First slowed, then stalled by political gridlock, the vast machinery of government clanged into partial shutdown mode on Tuesday and President Barack Obama warned the longer it goes “the more families will be hurt.” Republicans said it was his fault, not theirs, and embarked on a strategy — opposed by Democrats — of voting on bills to reopen individual agencies or programs. Ominously, there were suggestions from leaders in both parties that the shutdown, heading for its second day, could last for weeks and grow to

encompass a possible default by the Treasury if Congress fails to raise the nation’s debt ceiling. The two issues are “now all together,” said Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill. Speaking at the White House, the president accused Republicans of causing the first partial closure in 17 years as part of a non-stop “ideological crusade” to wipe out his signature health care law. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, gave as good as he got. “The president isn’t telling the whole story,’ he said in an opinion article posted on the USA Today website. “The fact

ANGOLA — Chapman’s Brewing Co., the city’s only craft brewery, now has product on the shelves of area liquor stores and is being served in restaurants throughout northeast Indiana. Chapman’s, a newly launched craft brewery named for John Chapman — Johnny Appleseed — recently announced its first product, Chapman’s American Ale Cider. “From an idea at a Trine (University) football game to a commercial scale brewery in 18 months is something that still amazes me,” said Scott Fergusson, Chapman’s CEO and founder. “The university, the community and especially Five Star (Distributing) have been instrumental in seeing Chapman’s become a reality.” Chapman’s has developed a distinctive ale cider, which combines malted barley and cascade hops in the brewing process to produce a sophisticated, deep amber beverage that appeals to both beer and cider drinkers, a Chapman’s news release said. What makes Chapman’s unique is that it it not sweet like most hard ciders on the market, Fergusson said. “Three sips and you get it,” Fergusson said. Chapman’s is brewed like a craft beer, but unlike many hard ciders, once brewing is complete, there’s nothing added to provide a

FORT WAYNE — A Pleasant Lake woman was identified as the victim of a fatal crash that occurred on Interstate 69 in Allen County on Monday. Judy E. Fisher, 68, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck that occurred at about 2 p.m. near the 321 mile marker in northern Allen County. She was the sole occupant in a vehicle she was driving that went off the highway and flipped down an embankment. Witnesses told police Fisher was driving erratically, our news partner, NewsChannel reported. Fisher went off one side of the road then overcorrected before leaving the highway. One southbound lane of I-69 was closed for several hours as emergency personnel worked at the scene of the wreck. A news release from the Allen County Coroner’s Office said Fisher was wearing a safety belt and alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash. The cause of death was due to blunt force trauma caused by the wreck, said Patt Kite, deputy Allen County coroner. Fisher is the 25th traffic fatality in Fort Wayne and Allen County this year.
Insurance markets open to a big surge CHICAGO (AP) — Americans got their first chance Tuesday to shop for health insurance using the online marketplaces that are at the heart of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, but government websites designed to sell the policies struggled to handle the traffic, with many frustrated users reporting trouble setting up accounts. State and federal agencies were working to fix the sites, which represent the biggest expansion in coverage in nearly 50 years. There should be time to make improvements. The open-enrollment period lasts for six months. Administration officials said they were pleased with the strong SEE INSURANCE, PAGE A8
