Trine starts $75M campaign ANGOLA — Trine University announced a $75 million capital campaign on Oct. 3 and is already more than halfway to its goal, a university news release said. “Invest in Excellence” is Trine’s campaign that “will allow us to continue the momentum,” Trine president Earl D. Brooks II told guests during the 18th annual Touchstone Donor Recognition Dinner on Thursday in the Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic and Recreation
Center. The event was part of homecoming festivities. “We must continue to nurture our campus facilities while we serve our students,” Brooks said. The campaign will enable Trine to “expand our resources while continuing good stewardship of the facilities we maintain.” The campaign, which raised $40 million during a silent phase, will support the annual fund, provide capital for renovation of Ford and Hershey halls and increase institutional endowment. Rick James, an alumnus
and chairman of the board of trustees, thanked donors for supporting Trine’s mission and encouraged them to consider aiding the new campaign. “Investing in Trine is a great investment in the future,” James said, as he called Trine “one of the finest engineering schools in the country.” Strengthening the university through the endowment fund will provide financial security, James said. Steuben brand to focus on Angola, Fremont
GOP weighs raising limit

LAKE JAMES — Goodbye Steuben County. Hello Angola-Fremont. That was the conclusion of a year-long branding effort that was presented to a group of local leaders at Potawatomi Inn in Pokagon State Park on Wednesday. Based on surveys of 480 visitors, potential visitors and stakeholders, the most identifiable parts about Steuben County were the communities of Angola and Fremont and the lakes. The most popular attraction was Pokagon. It is being recommended that efforts to market the community to potential visitors capitalize on Angola and Fremont, along with the current tag line of Northern Indiana Lakes Country. “What we’re recommending on the tourism-destination side,” said brand consultant Don Anderson, Nashville, “is Angola-Fremont, Northern Indiana Lakes Country.” The survey work was conducted since the branding effort began a year ago. The work was done to

better market the community to visitors through the Steuben County Tourism Bureau and industry by the Steuben County Economic Development Corp. Once the work is completed by the end of this year and you call the tourism bureau, don’t be surprised if the phone is answered with the phrase, “Visit Angola Fremont.” And if you call the SCEDC,
don’t be surprised if you hear something like, “Invest Steuben County.” “Angola-Fremont is recognized by the current visitors and potential visitors,” Anderson said. “Even though I don’t like to see Steuben County dropped, I agree,” said Ron Smith, president of the Steuben County Board of SEE BRANDING, PAGE A8
WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republican leaders are considering a short-term increase in the U.S. debt limit as a possible way to break out of the gridlock that threatens the nation with an unprecedented default in as little as a week, officials said Wednesday night. There now is far less urgency on Capitol Hill about ending the government shutdown, which heads into its 10th day on Thursday. It has caused inconvenience and financial concern for many individual Americans but appears not to threaten the widespread economic damage a default might bring. The officials declined to say what conditions, if any, might be attached to legislation to raise the $16.7 trillion debt limit for an undetermined period, perhaps a few weeks or months. The GOP rank and file are expected to meet and discuss the issue on Thursday, before a delegation led by Speaker John Boehner goes to the White House to meet with President Barack Obama. Obama has said he won’t agree to sign a debt limit increase if conditions are attached. Republicans are demanding as yet-unspecified concessions to reduce SEE LIMIT, PAGE A8
Kiwanis plan a haunting event

ANGOLA — A haunted house, hayrides and a carnival will come to Angola next weekend, courtesy of local Kiwanis clubs and youth service organizations. The Kiwanis Haunted Harvest Festival is a continuation of the Ghost Town held the past four years at Buck Lake Ranch. In its fifth year, the event is in a bigger facility and will offer Tilt-A-Whirl and Bullet rides by Circus City Amusement Co. in a grassy area near this year’s venue in the 2200 block of North Wayne Street, in the complex with Piggy’s and Las Limas. Volunteers have begun creating a ghastly tour. It is orchestrated by three area Kiwanis clubs — the 101 Lakes, Angola and Auburn clubs — as well as Trine University and local school groups. They include Acacia and Circle K fraternities, Theta Phi Alpha sorority, Fremont High School Key Club, Fremont Elementary School K Kids and Fremont Middle School Builders Club as well as Forever Improving Steuben Together, the youth arm of the Steuben County Community Foundation which includes youths from all area schools. Those involved receive a cut of the profits — at a percentage based on how many hours they work — to
might not be visible, upgrades to buildings will be. A $4.5 million renovation of Ford Hall, Trine’s former library, is scheduled to begin in spring 2014. Ford Hall is home to the Ketner School of Business. Drawings on display during the dinner revealed renovation plans for both Ford and Hershey halls. A date for renovation to begin on Hershey was not announced. Trine successfully completed its $90 million Vision for the Future campaign in 2009.

ANGOLA — Matt Conrad and the members of the Indiana Automotive Council he directs were expecting several more students at Trine University to regard their industry as one that rewards talent and is worth considering for a career. With help from Trine’s engineering dean, V.K. Sharma, and its Career Services department, the council arranged today’s event at the university, during which it could make its case while showing off some late-model vehicles made in Indiana. Up to 300 students were expected to attend a panel discussion where they could get an
