Board approves school logo By Sue Carpenter scarpenter@kpcmedia.com GARRETT — The Garrett-KeyserButler school board gave its approval to move ahead with new school corporation logos at Monday’s meeting. Superintendent Dennis Stockdale unveiled two designs created by high school senior Alaina Creager. Creager, who plays for the volleyball team, could not attend the meeting. Stockdale told the board the individual buildings have several logos, but he wanted a corporation logo to highlight the school’s vision and mission statement. After going through many possible designs, two were revealed at the meeting, one for a lighter background, the other darker. Work will continue to incorporate the new school corporation logo on letterheads and other documents. Stockdale also discussed the need to add parking lot banners to promote the

various school buildings and spirit, with a Home of the Railroaders for the high school, Home of the Locomotives for the middle school and Home of the Junior Railroaders for J.E. Ober. He also provided samples for banners to be placed around the entire school complex that would include the Character Counts Six Pillars of Character, as well as directional signs indicating parking lots for the various building to be placed on each of the four corners.

PTA information offered President Amber Hartsough and treasurer Taya Myers from the J.E. Ober PTA offered information on their group’s efforts to support students and teachers. They listed upcoming fundraisers, book fairs, Santa Shoppe and Cookies with Santa among other events. A “meet the principal” and PTA night is planned for Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. at J.E. Ober.

Personnel The board will take under advisement a request by George Brumbaugh of Garrett to go back to filming Garrett sporting events. He formerly video-recorded games for several years, but was removed from the position in 2011. Brumbaugh received praise for his work and character from school board members Terry Yarde and Chris Hoeffel, as well as former high school coaches Kristi Surfus and Ron Frickey. “George is super Garrett fan and did a professional job,” Frickey said. GARRETT —Three Garrett High School alumni from the 1950s will be inducted into the school’s Distinguished Alumni Hall of Honor during homecoming festivities Friday, Sept. 13. Each will be recognized for his or her accomplishments in the academic and business world during events at the Green school on Sept. 13. Nominees are Dr. Shirley (Dickison) Phillips and John W. Green, PhD, both from the Class of 1953; and Tom Leech from the Class of 1954. John Green was born in Garrett on Dec. 21, 1935, the only child of Anne T. and L. Dale Green. His father founded Insurance Trustees in 1931, a business that still thrives in Garrett. John attended St. Joseph School through the eighth grade and graduated from Garrett High School in 1953 where he lettered in football, basketball and track, track being his most successful sport. He entered Miami University in Oxford, Ohio with the intention of becoming a chemical engineer on a three-and-two year double-degree program with MIT. In the end this seemed to not fit his interests and he shifted his major to chemistry and graduated with a humanities-loaded BA degree from Miami. His PhD from Wisconsin is in physical chemistry with a minor in chemical engineering. His research in high-temperature chemistry required him to build a state of the art mass spectrometer. He used it to study the vaporization details of alkaline earth fluorides at extremely high temperatures (5000 degrees F). These

St. Joseph School fundraiser Saturday GARRETT — Members of the St. Joseph-Garrett school board are hosting their first Labor Day weekend fundraiser, Blue Suede BBQ, at 6:15 p.m. Saturday on the grounds of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 500 E. Seventh St., Auburn. The event will feature a chicken dinner, a la carte desserts, snacks, beer and wine. Guests are invited to dine and enjoy dancing in a large, air-conditioned tent to the music of national recording star and St. Joseph alumnus Todd Herendeen. A disc jockey also will be playing music for the event. Activities are planned for all ages at this family-friendly event. Event tickets are $20 for adults and $7 for children 12 and under. Ticket costs include both dinner and entertainment. Proceeds from the event will support the St. Joseph School Academy, newly formed to support the education of its middle-schoolaged students. GARRETT — Garrett youth have a free afterschool hangout on Tuesdays at Club Jam at the Judy A. Morrill Recreation Center. Activities for middle and high school students include snacks, XBox 360 and a flat screen TV in a specially-designed youth room from 3-6 p.m. Upcoming events include craft night, open gym, swims, a Halloween costume party, Thanksgiving, Christmas present gift night and a New Year’s Eve party. The program is supervised by well-trained adults volunteers and staff. All students are invited to participate. “The youth initiative is a priority of the (JAM) board of directors,” said youth leader Sue Blotkamp. Club Jam is funded by grants and donations. National TV adds shine to car auction By Dave Kurtz dkurtz@kpcnews.net AUBURN — With three days of national TV coverage, Auctions America is gearing up to put on a good show this weekend with its annual collector car auction. The NBC Sports Network will carry the action live on Thursday, Friday and Saturday as auctioneers take bids on some 1,200 collectible vehicles. TV coverage is scheduled for Thursday from 8 p.m. to midnight, Friday 8-10 p.m. and Saturday 12:30-4 p.m., according to the network’s website. “It adds a fun element to the sale. It makes it fun for people to be part of live TV. I think it will help grow Auburn — both spring and fall,” said Keith Koscak, auction manager for the giant sale at Auburn Auction Park. “It’s the best offering we’ve had in Auburn, both dollar-wise and in quality,” Koscak said about the lineup for this weekend’s sale. “One of the greatest things about this event is the diversity in the cars that are here. There’s something for everybody,” Koscak added. “We span over 100 years of automotive

Auction America is staging its fourth auction in Auburn as it carries on a 42-year tradition of collector car sales during the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival. The company is hoping to continue the momentum from its first California sale four weeks ago, which saw $17.2 million in sales and an 84 percent sale rate. In addition to its Duesen-

bergs, the sale offers six Auburn automobiles, topped by a 1933 Auburn Boattail Speedster with a 12-cylinder engine. Thursday is Armed Services Day, with free admission for active and retired military personnel and their families. The auction should reach its peak Saturday during the “Saturday Salon” segment of the sale. It includes more than 90 cars from southern Indiana collector Edward Ewing, with an emphasis on 1950s and ’60s models. Richard and Linda Kughn of Michigan, well known members of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club, will offer 20 cars from their collection. Not all of the attention will be focused on the bidding. Outside the auction arena, the event will offer helicopter rides, monster truck shows and rides and an action sports stunt show. Television celebrities scheduled to appear are Jessi Combs, star of Discovery’s “Overhaulin’” and “All Girls Garage,” Richard Rawlings and Aaron Kauffman of Discovery’s “Fast N’ Loud,” and Wayne Carini of Velocity’s “Chasing Classic Cars.”

Garrett man injured in Michigan crash By Sue Carpenter scarpenter@kpcmedia.com KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A Garrett man is listed in critical condition at a Michigan hospital following a single-vehicle crash Friday afternoon. According to Michigan State Police reports, Harry Jackson Sr., 71, was traveling south on I-69 near Marshall, Mich., in Calhoun County at 5:30 p.m. when his 2008 Lincoln LT pickup truck left the road in a wooded area and rolled over

the embankment. Jackson was transported from the scene to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo with what police reported to be non-life-threatening injuries. However, Tuesday morning, he was being treated in the hospital’s intensive care unit, according to a hospital spokesperson. Police reported they are not sure what caused the truck to leave the roadway, but noted medical issues may have been a factor.

BY KATHRYN BASSETT kbassett@kpcmedia.com AUBURN — An Auburn man received a six-year sentence for child solicitation from Judge Monte Brown during a hearing Monday in DeKalb Superior Court II. Cody Pontzius, 19, of South Division Street, pleaded guilty to the Class C felony crime as part of a plea agreement. Pontzius originally was charged with the more serious crime of child molesting, a Class B felony. The charge was amended as part of the plea agreement. Under terms of the agreement, Pontzius was sentenced to six years of incarceration, with four years suspended and served as four years of probation. Brown said he will allow Pontzius to be screened for eligibility to serve his sentence on community corrections. However, Brown noted, he will not recommend that Pontzius serve the sentence on community corrections. Pontz`ius’ attorney, Hugh Taylor, said Pontzius and the victim both were teenagers.

Village Post Office opens in LaOtto Site offers mail drop, flat rate mailers, stamp sales By Bob Braley bbraley@kpcmedia.com LAOTTO — LaOtto now has both a post office and another business providing some post office services. LaOtto Marathon’s convenience store, part of All-American Stores, became the 51st Village Post Office in what the U.S. Postal Service calls its Greater Indiana Area Tuesday morning. But the regular post office remains open for business. “It’s going to remain open. This is just an enhancement,” said Lisa Curlin, the New Haven postmaster, who oversees Village Post Offices in northeast Indiana. Curlin, Garrett Postmaster Gery Schneider and Alice Moore, acting

Recommendations approved The board voted unanimously on second readings for job descriptions for the support principal, assistant principal for student behavior, director of administration and innovation policy, guidance coordinator and school safety director/attendance officer. The board also approved recommendations to: • approve the second reading to update a staff long-term income protection policy • advertise for temporary loans for calendar year 2014; • approve the goals for expenditures resolution for this fiscal year as required by the Department of Education; • approve a resolution giving the superintendent authority to reduce the 2014 budget and also reduce Line 2 appropriations of the 2013 budget as required; and • appoint Ethel Yoder to the Garrett Public Library Board of Trustees for a second term.

Ober Principal Kristi Surfus reported NWEA testing is underway at the school and thanked Holly Wright for her effort in coordinating a recent Camp Discovery for all students. Middle school Principal Lucas Fielden announced an after-school tutoring program would begin this week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:10-4:10 p.m. in the media center. Teachers will staff the program, with the focus on language arts and social studies on Tuesdays and math and science on Thursdays. Support Principal Linda DePew reported overall growth of 18 special education students at the school.

In 1962 he went to work for Chevron Research Company, the research arm of Chevron Corporation, as a mass spectroscopist. After developing many new techniques for applying mass spectrometry to petroleum research he began to move through many different physical chemistry fields with the goal of developing and applying new technologies for solving research problems. He attributes his strong education in the fundamentals of science for his ability to move into new fields and make immediate original contributions. He retired in 1992 at the age of 56 just matching a goal set by the precedent of his father’s

retiring at 56 when John was a sophomore at Miami. He has two children, Elizabeth Francois, a nuclear engineer with a degree from Berkeley who works at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and Brian, a software engineer, employed by Citrix in Santa Barbara, Calif. Brian graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz. John and his wife, Carol, have lived in Billings, Montana for the last 20 years, where they have both been in demand to serve on the boards of not-for-profit arts organizations. John’s involvement with the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts, one of the premier ceramics residency programs in the world, located in Helena, Montana, led to the expansion of the Greens’ art collection to include contemporary ceramics. John recently left the Bray board after 10 years of active participation and support. The collection includes modern paintings

and sculptures of the region, contemporary ceramics from America and black-andwhite photographs from anywhere. The three inductees and/ or family representatives will speak with students during a school-wide assembly from 8:30-9:30 a.m. on Sept. 13, then visit high school classrooms in the afternoon. posit is not received by that time, the Library may reject the bid. No interest on the Deposit will accrue to the Purchaser. The Deposit will be applied to the purchase price of the Bonds. In the event the Purchaser fails to honor its accepted bid, the Deposit will be retained by the Library as liquidated damages. The Purchaser shall make payment for the Bonds in Federal Reserve funds to the registrar (the "Registrar") for the Bonds and accept delivery thereof from the Registrar within five (5) days after being notified that the Bonds are ready for delivery. It is anticipated that the Bonds will be ready for delivery within thirty (30) days after the date of sale. If the Library fails to have the Bonds ready for delivery prior to the close of banking hours on the forty fifth (45th) day after the date of sale, the bidder may secure the release of his bid upon request in writing, filed with the Library. The Purchaser is expected to apply to a securities depository registered with the SEC to make such Bonds depository eligible. At the time of delivery of the Bonds to the Purchaser, the Purchaser will be required to certify to the Library the initial reoffering price to the public of a substantial amount of each maturity of the Bonds. Upon election of the Purchaser, the Bonds will be initially issued in a Book Entry Only system with no physical distribution of bond certificates made to the public. In this case, one bond certificate in the name of Cede & Co., as nominee of The Depository Trust Company, New York, New York (“DTC”), and immobilized in its custody. The Purchaser, as a condition of delivery of the Bonds, may be required to deposit the bond certificates with DTC, registered in the name of Cede & Co., nominee of DTC. It is anticipated that CUSIP identification numbers will be printed on the Bonds, but neither the failure to print such numbers on any Bond nor any error with respect thereto shall constitute cause for failure or refusal by the Purchaser therefore to accept delivery of and pay for the Bonds in accordance with the terms of its bid. No CUSIP identification number shall be deemed to be a part of any Bond or a part of the contract evidenced thereby and no liability shall hereafter attach to the Library or any of its officers or agents because of or on account of such numbers. All expenses in relation to the printing of CUSIP identification numbers on the Bonds shall be paid for by the Library; provided, however, that the CUSIP Service Bureau charge for the assignment of said numbers shall be the responsibility of and shall be paid for by the Purchaser. The Purchaser will also be responsible for any other fees or expenses it incurs in connection with the resale of the Bonds. The approving opinion of Beers Mallers Backs & Salin, LLP, bond counsel of LaGrange, Indiana, together with a transcript of the proceedings relating to the issuance of the Bonds and closing papers in the usual form showing no litigation questioning the validity of the Bonds, will be furnished to the Purchaser at the expense of the Library. The Bonds are being issued under the provisions of I.C. §36 12-3-9. The Bonds are being issued for the purpose of procuring funds to be used to finance the acquisition, construction, extension, alteration, improvement, remodeling, and equipping of an addition to and renovation of the Library and the related incidental expenses to be incurred in connection therewith and on account of the issuance of the Bonds. The Bonds will be direct obligations of the Library payable out of ad valorem taxes to be collected on the taxable property within the district of the Library; however, the Library's collection of the levy may be limited by operation of I.C. §6-1.1-20.6, which provides taxpayers with tax credits for property taxes attributable to different

classes of property in an amount that exceeds certain percentages of gross assessed value of that property. The Library is required by law to fully fund the payment of debt service on the Bonds in an amount sufficient to pay the debt service, regardless of any reduction in property tax collections due to the application of such tax credits. The Library may not be able to levy or collect additional property taxes to make up this short fall. In the opinion of bond counsel, under the federal statutes, decisions, regulations and rulings existing on this date, the interest on the Bonds is excludable from gross income for purposes of federal income taxation. The Bonds constitute an indebtedness only of the Library. The Bonds are subject to the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 as in effect on the date of their issuance (“Code”) which imposes limitations on the issuance of obligations like the Bonds under federal tax law. The Library has covenanted to comply with those limitations to the extent required to preserve the exclusion of interest on the Bonds from gross income for federal income tax purposes, The Library has designated the Bonds for purposes of Section 265(b)(3) of the Code to qualify for the $10,000,000 annual exception from 100% disallowance, in the case of banks and other financial institutions, of the deduction for interest expense allocable to tax-exempt obligations. The Library has prepared an Official Statement relating to the Bonds which it has deemed to be a nearly final official statement. A copy of the Official Statement may be obtained from Cate Birdseye, Director at Garrett Public Library, 107 W. Hudson St., Garrett, IN 46738, (260) 357-5445 or in limited quantities prior to submission of a bid by request from the Library's financial advisor. Within seven (7) business days of the sale, the Library will provide the Purchaser with up to fifteen (15) copies of the final Official Statement at the Library's expense. Additional copies, at the Purchaser's expense, must be requested within five (5) business days of the sale. Inquiries concerning matters contained in the nearly final Official Statement must be made and pricing and other information necessary to complete the final Official Statement must be submitted by the Purchaser within two (2) business days following the sale to be included in the final Official Statement. The Library has agreed to enter into a Continuing Disclosure Undertaking in order to permit the successful purchaser to comply with the SEC Rule 15(c)2 12. A description of this undertaking is set forth in the near final Official Statement and will also be set forth in the final Official Statement. The Continuing Disclosure Undertaking will be executed and delivered by the Library at the closing of the issuance of the Bonds. Volunteers needed for Labor Day GARRETT — The Garrett High School athletic department needs workers to help staff the car auction on Labor Day weekend Aug. 28-Sept. 1. The event is Garrett’s largest athletic fundraiser of the year. More than 540 four-and-one-half hour time slots must be filled. “We’re asking for all community members to help us with this project,” athletic director Chris DePew said. “We have always received great support from Garrett State Bank and Garrett High School staff members. However, we also need

more help.” Coaches are recruiting workers for the event, or those interested can sign up at the athletic office or by calling 357-4116. Volunteers need not have a student or athlete in the high school. Volunteers can designate their time to be donated to a specific athletic team, the athletic department or any other school group. Ticket booth workers and people who can help park cars are needed. All money raised goes to Garrett students through their athletic teams. Most of the money is spent on uniforms and specialized practice equipment. Volunteers do not need to have a student or athlete in the high school. Those available to help are asked tp contact any head coach or the athletic office at 357-4116.
