Garrett adding JAG program Provides encourages students to stay in school, graduate

By Sue Carpenter scarpenter@kpcmedia.com GARRETT — A program to keep junior and senior students in school through graduation will be offered at Garrett this year. The Jobs of America’s Graduates (JAG) is a school-to-career program implemented in 700 high schools, alternative schools, community colleges and middle schools in the U.S. The program not only encourages students to continue through graduation, it provides work-based learning experiences that will lead to career-advancement opportunities, or to enroll in a post-secondary

institution that leads to a rewarding career. Edmond O’Neal from the Regional Workforce Investment Board and Rachel Bryan from Community Action of Northeast Indiana presented the program at Monday’s meeting of the school board. O’Neal said 55 JAG programs were operational in Indiana last year, with 80 expected this fall. The program is completely funded through the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, he said. The program not only provides support academically, but also

personally and financially. Bryant noted the program is considered an elective class. The course emphasizes attendance, she said. “Sometimes the biggest struggle is coming to school,” she said. The program also includes “dress for success” days, with funding available to purchase appropriate attire for the day, and for job interviews. Students will have an advocate/ job specialist and childcare will be provided for teen parents. Learning Center director Greg Myers said the childcare issue happens “more often than you

think,” for some students. Bryant said students work with a job specialist for 12 months. Students will have a paid work experience, be out in the community and perform internships paid by CANI. The selection process for the program was formerly based on income, according to Bryant. They will be targeting a cross-section of students, including high honor students, some who might be behind a few credits, and those who are considered strongly at JAG, Page 6

Fire destroys rural garage By Sue Carpenter scarpenter@kpcmedia.com GARRETT — A fire completely destroyed a garage in rural Garrett Thursday afternoon. The LaOtto Volunteer Fire Department was called to the scene in the 3900 block of S.R. 327 south of Garrett at 3:19 p.m. Upon arrival about nine minutes later, firefighters found the garage fully involved, according to Assistant LaOtto Fire Chief Stone Oplinger. The fire was brought under control in 15 minutes. A nearby single story home was not involved in the fire, but firefighters removed siding to ensure it was safe. Homeowner Steve VanAllen was not home at the time of the fire, according to Oplinger. Investigators Friday could not determine a cause of the fire due to the extensive damage. Neighbor Mike Miller said the homeowners had been burning trash in a nearby fire pit earlier in the day. Oplinger said some miscella-

Animal shelter needs roof repair By Aaron Organ aorgan@kpcmedia.com BUTLER — A ceiling above the dog kennel at the DeKalb County Animal Shelter has burst open, forcing the agency to scramble for help to repair the damage. Shelter manager Anna Feller said a slow leak in the roof of the building at 5221 U.S. 6, west of Butler, saturated the ceiling above a kennel that houses more than 30 dogs, and it burst this week. Feller said a section of the ceiling is in danger of falling in on the kennel. A contractor visited the shelter Thursday at no cost and cut away the compromised ceiling, Feller said. The contractor applied plastic around the hole as a stop-gap measure before he can make complete repairs, she said. A roofer is scheduled to come to the building to address the leak, Feller said. Classmates Eula (Freeman) Kell and Carolyn (Stroh) Vaughn from the Class of 1949 and Joyce Winebrenner share a few moments following this year’s reunion at the Garrett Middle School.

New owner plans renovations, repair to Gala Theatre in ’63 50 Years Ago The Gala Theatre building in downtown Garrett was sold to Roger Scherer of Roger Scherer Theatres in July 1963. Owners were Mrs. John Emmanuel and Mrs George Kalafat of Cleveland. Scherer also operates movie houses in Lansing, LaPorte and Lombard, Ill. The new owner planned to place a new roof on the building, redecorate the interior, install new carpeting and redecorate the front of the building. The Gala Theatre was constructed in 1939 by the late Alex and George Kalafat. The DeKalb County Aviation Board and the county commissioners would meet following a two-month study for expansion to the current facility. According to Wendell Cooper, president of the aviation board, information had been compiled regarding cost of land acquisition, construction of hangars, runways and other facilities. In an attempt to make the old portion of the high school more attractive, all of the hallways were being painted during the summer of 1963, according to superintendent Charles Puff. In addition to painting, window frames and woodwork in classrooms would also be painted, and window shades would be purchased for some of the rooms with hopes pieces of furniture could be purchased to replace some of the old style, obsolete desks. Puff said this is part of a long range plan to restore and renovate the old portion of the high school.

The Garrett Chamber of Commerce approved a plan presented by the Garrett Jaycees to beautify four vacant lots in the downtown district. Gerold Mellott, representing the Jaycees, suggested the lots be LOOKING covered with BACK crushed Stories from limestone, benches The Garrett and picket Clipper fences. The archives Jaycees would supply the labor for the project and the estimated cost of $56 per lot would be paid by the Chamber of Commerce, under the plan. Lots included were between the Gala Theatre and the Elk Temple, between Garrett State Bank and Stern’s Women’s Apparel, next to Hopkins Hardware and next to Griswold’s tavern. Connie Jean Kolbe of the 112 E. Covell St. was nominated for Campus Homecoming Queen at Ball State Teachers College in Muncie. Fifteen contestants were nominated from 4,500 female students to represent various dormitories and sororities. Kolbe was selected to represent Kipple hall, a co-ed dormitory where she resided as a freshman the previous year.

25 Years Ago The Garrett Eagles donated a new hot dog machine to the Garrett Girls Softball League in the summer of 1988. The Eagles, longtime sponsor of the softball league, gave the machine to be used in the new concession stand at

Feick Park. The old concession stand was moved to Northside Park, along with the old hot dog machine. Ernest Robinson, trustee for the Elks, presented the machine to Ron Morrison, president of Garrett Girls Softball. Little League awards were presented to Cory Eberhard from the Garrett State Bank League for outstanding 9-year-old; Adam Kleeman for the Jacob Mitchell Outstanding Catcher Award, who played for Peoples Federal Savings Bank; and Cliff Gunion as outstanding 11-year-old. Cliff played for the Garrett Marathon Team. A re-dedication and open house to mark the 75th anniversary of the Garrett City Hall was held in July. Former Garrett mayor and current council member Cecil Miller submitted a report on the history of the building that was built for a total cost of $31,000. Former mayors Phil VanDerbosch, Harris Hoeffel and Marcella Zern, and current mayor Charles Davis offered remarks during the event. Kenny Carroll of Seattle, Wash. and Rae Ann (Trainer) Key of San Mateo, Calif., received awards for coming the farthest distance to attend the annual Garrett Schools Alumni Reunion in 1988. Carroll graduated with the class of 1957, Rae Ann graduated in 1956. Margaret (Mountz) Carroll was an honored guest at the reunion, having graduated in 1918. Her husband, George Carroll, was superintendent at Garrett Schools when the high school was built in 1922.

BY KATHRYN BASSETT kbassett@kpcmedia.com AUBURN — The Pianos on the Square interactive outdoor family event will kick off Friday with a garden party from 4-7 p.m. on the lawn of the DeKalb County Courthouse in Auburn. The Auburn Arts Commission Inc. is collaborating with Trine University and Eckhart Public Library to present the free, interactive, outdoor family friendly event featuring decorated pianos located all over Auburn. “The pianos are meant to be played, by everyone and anyone at any time, 24 hours a day,” said event chairman Priscilla Creaven. “Enjoy free outdoor concerts and recitals by talented pianists and musicians aged 6 to 90. Music ranges from classical to jazz to country.” Pianos also will be placed in Garrett, Butler and Waterloo, where additional events will be held. All events are free and open to the public. The garden party will feature a chalk walk on Cedar Street, a garden party hat contest, piano music from Carol Foley, Julie Western and Sydney Hefty and refreshments. “We just want people to mix and mingle and try the pianos that are downtown,” Creaven said. Musical performances will take place on weekends through Sept. 15. On Sunday, Aug. 4, local musician Dallas Fike will play. Born into a musical family and raised in rural DeKalb County, Fike mastered the piano at a very young age, opening the door to a successful music career. At 14, Fike was recruited by a country show band from Toledo, Ohio. For the next four years, he would be the opening act and backup musician for the cast of television’s country comedy, “Hee Haw.” He also had the opportunity to play with Marty Robbins, Jack Green, George Jones and many others. Once he returned to Toledo, Fike became a full-time member of the Mason Dixie Band. Recovering from a serious automobile accident brought Fike back to Indiana. He continued to find success with local and regional bands Overlynd Express and

He enjoyed music so much that he learned to play marimba, rudimental snare drum, euphonium, piano and electric guitar. He has received musical training at the Interlochen

Arts Academy, Eastman School of Music, Indiana University, Mannes College of Music and the University of Denver. His principal teachers have included composers David Tcimpidis, Chris Malloy, Derek Bermel, Conrad Kehn, classical pianists Sophia Rosoff, Alice Rybak, Steven Mayer, TJ Lymenstull, and jazz pianists Bill Dobbins, Harold Danko, Fred Hersch, Kenny Werner, Eric Gunnison and Luke Gillespie. After finishing his degree in composition,Berg moved to New York, N.Y., and now finds work as a copyist, arranger, composer, classical and jazz pianist and recording artist. Berg is spending the summer on a 10-week tour with the Manhattan Band in Barcelona, Spain, employed by the Norwegian Epic Cruise Line. Berg said he is excited to return to his hometown and share his love of music with his friends and family.

Local retailer giving away backpacks, school supplies AUBURN – A local wireless retailer will give away backpacks packed with school supplies as part of a national campaign. The Cellular Connection, 1047 Smaltz Way, Auburn, will give away 100-150 backpacks, each filled with pencils, paper, a pencil box, folders, glue and more, as part of the company’s nation-wide campaign, the School Rocks Backpack Giveaway. Families can bring children to the store Aug. 3 from noon to 2 p.m. to pick a stuffed backpack. The backpacks will be given out on a first come, first served basis, as supplies last. Leftover backpacks will be donated to local schools,

the company said. The School Rocks Backpack Giveaway campaign will give away 60,000 backpacks stuffed with school supplies at more than 400 The Cellular Connection locations, the company announced. The campaign is funded through customers of the retailer who opt to round their purchases up to the nearest dollar, with the difference funneled to the School Rocks Backpack Giveaway. “TCC is doing its part to ensure that as many children as possible are set up for educational success,” the company said.

Some of the classes may be for credit recovery, where a student might need to attend a different class, not of their choosing. “Selection is not punitive in any way,” emphasized Myers. O’Neal added that one additional service is that a coordinator will float for all schools, making sure students take the college entrance exams and helping them write essays for scholarships. “This is a big piece of the program. We don’t always push for traditional college — it could just be for a short-term certificate. Not every kid is built for traditional college.” The program continues one year following high school graduation..
