Garrett graduation is Friday Kallie Knott is valedictorian, Tristan Bigelow is salutatorian 2016 Northeast Indiana YWCA Hope Award, 2016-17 Supervised Agriculture Experience Beef Entrepreneurship Proficiency State Finalist, Tri-Kappa Academic Excellence, Supreme Beef Showman at the Hoosier Beef Congress, Indiana State Fair and National Junior Charolais Show, earning the Allen County Beef Leadership Award, exhibiting the Indiana State Fair 4th Overall Female and Western Regional Grand Champion Bred and Owned Female. “Academically, the greatest honor is being on the Garrett High School Dream Team for the last three years and ending my time at Garrett High School with the highest academic honor of valedictorian,” she said. One of her favorite quotes is from the late Rich Ward, my grandfather. “You may not have everything you want, but you have everything you need.”
GARRETT — Kallie Knott and Tristan Bigelow were named Garrett High School’s tops two seniors during the school’s Academic Pride Day program on May 12 in the Performing Arts Center.

Valedictorian Kallie Knott is the daughter of Robert and Rebecca Knott. She plans to further her education at Purdue University West Lafayette “with an utmost passion for veterinary science. “I will study inventively and take advantage of learning opportunities to major in animal science with a concentration in biosciences. After developing strong skills in my undergrad studies, I will apply to a school of veterinary medicine with a back road to attending graduate school,” she said. “By equipping myself with the techniques, surgical procedures, and understandings, I will launch my career in the field of veterinary medicine within the livestock industry, tending to animals in need of medical attention, advocating for prosperous farms, and taking part in breed associations,” Knott said. For the past four years, it was important for her to get involved with school activities. She has been involved in National Honor Society, student council, GHS Leadership Team, Class of 2017 officer team, academic team, Future Farmers of America and basketball. “As time went by, I knew I wanted more involvement in the livestock industry and my community that grew into local, state and national organizations as well as

community service,” she said. Outside of high school organizations, she is currently involved with 4-H, Indiana Junior Beef Cattle Association serving as a board member, American International Junior Charolais Association in which she currently serves as an At-Large Director, Indiana Junior Charolais Association serving as secretary, and Indiana Junior Angus Association serving as First
Vice-President. “My involvement within school and outside organizations allowed me to grow in leadership, communication and humility but something was missing. Not only did I feel a need to be involved but also a need to give back,” she said. She began her involvement in community and outreach programs such as DeKalb’s Philanthropic VOICE team, church outreach opportunities like Operation Christmas Child,

St. Martin’s Community Kitchen, volunteer veterinary work with Yarde Veterinary Services and “Kiss the Cow” fundraiser raising awareness for Leukemia and Lymphoma. Her current outreach was a visit to the Global Gateway Heifer Ranch in Arkansas in a simulation of third world countries learning why “if there is enough for all, why don’t all have enough.” Some of her greatest accomplishments include
Salutatorian Tristan Bigelow, 17, is the son of Troy Bigelow and Bonnie Bigelow. He plans to attend Purdue University and major in aeronautical engineering with a career goal work in jet propulsion or space flight engineering with NASA or JPL. He has been active in GHS soccer and track, National Honor Society, class treasurer, Environmental Club, student council, Athletic Leadership Council, math and interdisciplinary academic teams, travel soccer with Rangers F.C. and marching band. He has received many honors and recognitions including ISCA All-District First Team Soccer,
KPC All-Area First Team Soccer, NECC All-Conference First Team Soccer, NECC All-Academic Team, ISSMA State Solo and Ensemble Gold Medal, Indiana Regional Academic All-Star, Tri Kappa Junior Science Award and National Merit Commended Student. His favorite quote is by Albert Einstein. “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.” He ranks his education highly at Garrett. “The faculty is outstanding and the teachers care about the education of the students,” Bigelow said. He sees the Railroader football team as strong. “We had the best kicker around (Kiann McDonald). I think the Spanish program needs more attention and promoting. More people are speaking different languages and it is important to adapt as our society changes,” he added. Teachers David Stevens and Mark Claxton have been huge influences in his high school career. “Mr. Claxton engaged me in class every day and taught me so many things in English and American History. Mr. Stevens has taught me many things in math and helped me understand calculus, along with playing cribbage.” Playing high school soccer with his teammates for four years is his best high school memory.

Both Knott and Bigelow will address classmates and parents during commencement exercises in the Paul Bateman Gym on Friday, May 26 at 8 p.m. A student-led baccalaureate service will be at 6:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.

From the Editor Congratulations to the Class of 2017! How can 13 years pass by so quickly, but hold so many memories? Remember your first day of school, or trying to open your locker, or playing with classmates who have since become your best friends? Sure, some classes and expectations may have been tough, but each and every one of you has proven that you are a success by reaching this important milestone in your life. Many teachers, parents and community members have helped you become the person you are today. Take that knowledge and use it to make wise decisions about your future, whatever your plans may be. And never forget where those important, lifelong lessons were learned. In recognition of this memorable event, the 133rd graduating class is being congratulated by several businesses and merchants in this special edition of The Garrett Clipper. This year, students were asked to share memories, plans and goals for the future and to list honors they received while at Garrett High School. In addition, students were asked to identify specific teachers who were significant in his or her high school career and to offer an opinion on the education they received at Garrett. We hope this edition will serve as a keepsake for you and your families. Students cherish friendships Haylie Alger, 17, is the daughter of Kelly and Cale Riccius and Adam and Lindsey Morris. She plans to attend Manchester University with an academic scholarship this fall, working toward a bachelor’s degree in political science. She then plans to attend Rutgers University to attend Law School. Her ultimate goal is to work with the U.S. Air Force in public affairs and then as a lawyer in the JAG program. She has been involved in National Honor Society, student council, Friends of Rachel Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Lady Railroader volleyball team. She credits teachers Bill Thomas, Monica Cone, Brie Sprunger and Katie Treesh for having a huge impact on her learning career and future career. “Their classes focused on career readiness and everything I learned from each of them will continue to help me throughout my life. I will always be an avid supporter of the Career and Technical Education department at Garrett High School.” Sarah Nicole Ball, 18, is the daughter of Carolyn and Randy Ball. Her future
plans are to attend Ivy Tech with a goal to major in business and minor in photography. Her personal goals are to be successful and have someone look up to her as someone they think is a cool person and would want to get to know better. Her career goals are to one day own my own business and being well known. She was a one-year member of the Future Farmers of America. Sarah rates her experience at Garrett an eight on a 1-10 scale. “We have a lot of issues we need to work on, some being issues we have not discussed and some being education issues,” she said. She feels the Tree Huggers group deserves more attention “because it would be nice to see our school go green.” Sarah said teachers who have made the biggest impact on her education are “Mrs. Linda Walls for always believing in me and telling me that I can do it; Mrs. Katie Treesh for always making me go forward in my education, Mrs. Julie Williams for always telling me to always remember that no matter how hard it gets, there is always rain before a rainbow. “I would also like to thank Mrs. Julie Gram for always being there for me to vent and talk about any
issue I had senior year.” “I wish there was more peace and love in the world we live in and maybe everyone will love everyone a little more,” she added. Victoria Anne Baver, 17, is the daughter of Victor and Elizabeth Baver. She plans to attend Anderson University to major in biology with a pre-med path. Her career goals are to become either a physician assistant or an ER trauma doctor. She has been involved with soccer, basketball, track, student council, and National Honor Society every year of her high school career. Brianna Megan Beckley, 18, is the daughter of Max and Alishia Gregory and Christopher Beckley. She plans to attend the University of Saint Francis for nursing while continuing to work as a CNA in a nursing home. Her career goal is to become a nurse at DuPont and work with geriatrics, and then pursue a career as a neurosurgeon after going to college for that. She has been involved in National Honor Society, student council, Students Initiating Care and Kindness (SICK), Friend of Rachel, show choir and musicals. “Garrett has provided

great opportunities such as vocational where I earned my home health care and hospice license, my certified nurses’ assistant certification, and my CPR certification. This has prepared me for work post-graduation,” she said. Brianna said she believes the school’s sports programs are very strong, but they have a lot more support than others. The show choir, art, musical and drama department all lack support compared to other programs. “These have some very talented students in them as well as amazing teachers behind them. They deserve more school-wide and community-wide support,” she said. Mark Claxton and Bill Thomas are teachers she credits for making an impact on her education. “Mr. Claxton has been an amazing contributor to three years of my high school education. I have taken English 10 Honors, American Studies, and even joined the Biblical Literature class as a nonreligious person just to have one more class with him. “He has helped me with things inside and outside of school. Mr. Claxton has donated to my cousin, Trey multiple times, asks how he and I are both doing on many occasions, and just puts anyone who walks into his classroom in a good mood,” she said. “Mr. Thomas is another one who has helped insideand-outside of school. He has helped me pay for prom pictures when I had no money to pay for them, he has helped me with scholarship applications, schoolwork and other difficult things,” Brianna said. “Having these two around all four years of high school has made each year easier. I cannot imagine my high school career without these two because I would not be in as good of a mood everyday as I am when they are present and I probably would not have the grades that I have now if it were not for them. I am very grateful for these two men and they deserve that recognition,” she said. Her most memorable moment was when Encore! 2015 made it to state. “This was the first time any group of Encore! had ever been to state. Although we placed last, it was still great to be able to say we were in the top 10 in Indiana,” she said. Her biggest complaint stems from a class she attended this year. “Students cannot learn from just watching videos. Teachers go to college to teach. I become very agitated when the teacher turns on a video every day of class then sits behind their desk on their phone while we watch an hour and a half video each day. “That is something that needs to change. I still believe in lectures and taking notes. Teaching/ learning needs to become a little bit old school again rather than constantly watching videos,” she said.

Seniors seek less bullying in future Jerika Rose Brooks, 18, is the daughter of Shauntel Brooks and Steven Brooks. She plans to attend New York University or Indiana University to become a forensic pathologist. She will be major in chemistry/ biology and minor in Spanish in college. Her future goals are to finish college and receive her doctorate, become a forensic pathologist and live in New York City. Se has been active as cheerleading captain, National Honor Society vice president, Athletic Leadership Council and a member of the track and field team. She gives her education at Garrett a perfect rating. “Mr. (Steve) Rhoades and Mr. (Mark) Claxton are both amazing teachers and people, as they not only contribute to the education of their students, but make sure that they are doing well on a personal level,” she said. Elizabeth Brown, 18, is the daughter of Doreen Brown and Chet Brown. She has been active in cheerleading, marching band and show choir at Garrett. She said instructors Steve Rhoades, Paul Marlow and Mark Claxton made the most impact on her high school career.”They are all so real and get what it is like to be a teenager. They are all so amazing and know how to connect with the students,” she said. Sally Marie Carroll, 18, is the daughter of Randy and Marcela Carroll. She plans to attend IPFW to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Spanish. She has been involved with cross country, marching band, track and field, spell team, speech team, social studies team, student council, National Honor
Society, Tree Huggers, and has served as a class officer “I would rate my education at Garrett High School at a 10. Garrett has provided me with learning opportunities not only within the school but around the world with the Washington D.C. trip, the Europe trip, and the Japan exchange,” Sally said. “ I am honored to attend a school that cares so much for each and every student and caters to what we would like to learn about,” she added. Brianna Nichelle Colgan, 18, is the daughter of Lurlei Gibson, John Colgan, and Tennessee Rhodes. She plans to major in business administration and become a tattoo artist. She is currently working for a nursing home. Her career goal is to become a successful tattoo artist, or an elementary school art teacher. Brianna has been a member of the track and field team at Garrett. “I believe our art programs are the best, mainly because I love art,” she said of her education. “But our English and math programs could use more attention in explaining things, because nothing is explained very well the teachers just throw it at you and expect you know what you’re doing with little classroom involvement now that we have computers,” she said. “Mrs. (Jonelle) Furnish was the only English teacher I fully understood without having to Google anything. She always thoroughly explained everything before she gave us assignments. “Mr. (Mark) Ober helped me grow as an artist and become more interested in the subject as well as

entertained and developed my reason for wanting to be a kindergarten through grade four art teacher,” she added. Her most memorable moment at Garrett High School was the rally for classmate Ryan Hathaway and the big prayer circle they held early 2016 when he had passed away. She would like students to know how to dress appropriately. She would also “like less bullying in public schools and more action taken so less of this is occurring,” she said. Brandon Matthew Conley, 18, is the son of Kay Nickels and Chad Conley. He plans to enlist in the U.S. Army and become an MP for four years, and then get a degree in business and apply for a position at nearby police station and hopefully become a Garrett Police officer to start off. “My career goals are to make my dream of becoming a police officer in my hometown and being a hard worker and love my job every day,” he said. While at Garrett he has played baseball and was on the wrestling team his sophomore year. He earned an Outstanding Student Award in Project Lead the way as a freshman. “Garrett High School has been amazing for support and has some amazing teachers who really care about their students and their success,” he said. “I think the athletic program is the best because our students and fans support so much and really come together as one and show what a Railroader is truly about.” He also praises instructors at Garrett. “Mrs. (Stephanie) Rhoades is the BEST teacher at Garrett High
School — she cares so much about her students and making sure they will make it and graduate. I’ve known her since middle school and she has pushed and pushed me to finish strong and has never failed to help me out and make things to my understanding. “Mrs. (Holly) Joseph has also impacted my schooling by really helping me with changing my classes around and getting me the help I need and has never failed to have a happy bright attitude each day,” he added. His most memorable moment at Garrett was his senior year. “The guys I grew up with and playing football, almost making it to state and had such a strong year!” he said. Another memorable moment in his sophomore year was Mr. (Ryan) Hathaway and Mr. (Jake) Clifford wrestling sending Garrett wrestlers to state! He also will recall making a circle around basically the whole football field to pray after every game! “Shows true heart and what a Railroader is truly about. We are ONE!” Brielle Shea Dazey, 18, is the daughter of Marguax and Taya Dazey. She will be attending Butler University and going into the pre-pharmacy program with a career goal to become a pharmacist. At Garrett, she has participated in volleyball, basketball, softball, National Honor Society, student council and Athletic Leadership Council. She was awarded the Heart and Guts Award for softball, the sportsmanship award for basketball, the ICBA Academic All State Honorable Mention, and was a captain for all three sports teams.

“My education at Garrett has been a 10,” she said. “When I transferred my junior year, the community made me feel like I have been here for years, and I have learned so much in these past two years and am so thankful for every opportunity,” Brielle said. Her most memorable moment at Garrett has been being a part of the basketball team and “getting the chance to experience so many cool team trips with a team who became family.” Natalie Elaine Erwin, 18, is the daughter of Brad and Beth Erwin. She plans to attend Miami University in Oxford, Ohio with a major in Integrated English Education and a minor in History. Her first goal begins with graduating from Miami University as a licensed educator. After graduation, she will fulfill her TEACH Grant by teaching in low-income schools. “I believe fulfilling this grant will provide me with valuable experience for the next steps in my career. For a large part of my career I want to teach in third world

and foreign countries,” she said. “Eventually though I would love to return to Garrett High School as an educator.” In evaluating Garrett High School, Natalie said “educational programs should be continuously improving but there is one program that I believe has embodied the idea of constant growth and deserves recognition. “The Interdisciplinary Learning Collaborative Academy is a revolutionary concept in education. This personalized learning academy encourages students to pursue their passions, be eager to learn, and explore their interests in depth. The Academy allows students to tailor the curriculum to their interests and provides students with a renewed love of learning,” she said. Additionally, Interdisciplinary Learning is a style of education that has been missing for the last 150 years. This style shifts the focus of the classroom from the teacher to the student, makes the world a classroom, and creates lifelong learners, Natalie said.

Many have earned college credits Dawson Furnish, 18, is the son of John and Jonelle Furnish. He will be attending DePaul University to major in film and media studies, following graduation. Goals he has set are to graduate college and join a writing staff. While at Garrett High School, he has been very involved with Railroader Regiment, show choir, cross country, track and plays. He was awarded the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award for the Class of 2017. He is a member of the National Honor Society, earned Tri Kappa scholastic awards, honor roll and was selected Mr. Railroader. “My education at Garrett High School was amazing and I’ve learned a couple of
things along the way!” he said. “I think Garrett High School has a strong football and basketball program but it would be nice for cross country and track teams to actually have a tent to set-up and camp in during meets,” he suggests. “The academic teams could use some more love too.” He singled out teachers Paul Marlow and Mark Claxton as making an impact on his education. “Mr. Marlow has always been a great mentor and guide to me. Mr. Claxton has always been an awesome teacher and friend, but my mom (teacher Jonelle Furnish) has shaped me into the person I am and gave me the opportunity to do great things,” he said. “My most memorable

moment at Garrett High School would be dancing on stage in nothing but a unitard!” Dawson said. “If I could see change in America, I would want to see less separation among the citizens. We don’t need another civil war,” he said. Danielle Gross, 19, is the daughter of James Gross and Jamie Napier. She plans after graduation is to go into the workforce. “I transferred to Garrett High School this year and it is a great place to attend,” she said. “I’ve really enjoyed working with Mrs. (Stephanie) Rhoades. She is always willing to help me and make sure I take the classes I need for graduation.” Arianne Marie Hammond, 18, is the daughter of Jay and Renee Hammond. She plans to attend the University of Saint Francis to study political science and English, and then move on law school. Her career goal is to become a lawyer for the National Parks Service, or become a federal-level politician. She has been active in band, show choir, Spell Team, English Team, Shotgun Team and earned Band All-Music Award four years.
She has earned Tri-Kappa hnors, National Honor Society and honor roll. “The music department is so strong, but often underrated or ignored. Some of the distribution of attentiveness throughout the school isn’t quite where the students want it to be,” she said. “(Instructor) Anthony Thomas has had an amazing impact on my high school career. He pushed me beyond any academic limits I thought I had, but also became a very impactful support system for me throughout anything I needed help with, even going beyond outside of the classroom to be sure of my overall well-being,” she added. She lists changes she would like to see in the future “Overall, more logic, common sense and kindness. Often people get too excited or ‘triggered’ over things that are not meant to be taken personally, and are unwilling to compromise or listen to other’s opinions,” she said. Scott Daniel Hjelm, 18, is the son of Amber Tanner and Daniel Hjelm. He will be attending IUPUI after graduation to major in exercise science to become a physical therapist. She noted the one program at Garrett High School that needs attention is probably the Tree Huggers, “because throughout the school year we put a lot of dedication into the school and helping out the community, and everyone thought we were just a group that recycled around the schools, when we did so much more than that.” Her most memorable moment at GHS was when ENCORE! went to state for the first time! “Definitely something I will never forget. We proved to every other show choir, that we can ‘play with the big dogs’.”

He has received digital citizenship awards for completing courses. “I would rate my education a 9.5/10. You have great opportunities here to achieve something great. I wish I had more time to do more as new courses came along,” he said. Teachers Katie Treesh and Mark Claxton made significant impact on his education. “Mrs. Treesh always tries to make you a better person and will always be there for you. Also, Mr. Claxton is a great person, teacher, and friend. He will help you at any time and way to make sure you are doing well. He cares for us and will always be looking out for us,” said Scott.

Teachers impact students’ success Jacob Michael Kellen is the son of Mike and Kelly Gomes, and Kara and Jeff Kellen (deceased). He plans to attend Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona to major in film and media production. He has been active with the Railroader Regiment Marching Band for six years, Encore Show Choir for six years, high school dramas and musicals, National Honor Society and student council. Jacob has served as junior and senior class president, student council president, dance captain for Encore show choir and drumline section leader for Railroader Regiment. His most favorite quote — “The most dangerous thing you can do in life is play it safe.” – Casey Neistat Hanna Elizabeth King, 18, is the daughter of Chuck and Michelle King. She has been involved with student publications, student council and track & field. “The programs at Garrett that are very strong are definitely student publications and the ILC Academy. “Student publications gives you such an amazing opportunity to be able to get out and see what the school’s extra curricular activities are like. This past year, I was the photography editor in semester one and I had such an awesome photographing pictures for the football players,” she said. If you like taking pictures, she would recommend taking this class. The ILC Academy is for students who do well on their own. “You can take any class in there and the teacher and student ratio is one-to-one. You can build so many relationships with the teachers and even the fellow peers,” Hanna said. Teacher Hannah Gilliland made significant contributions to not only her education but also the real world. “I can tell her anything and I know I can trust her. As a student, she always has cared for mine and other students’ education.” Steve Rhoades has also made significant contributions to her career at Garrett. “I joined the ILC my junior year for math and he always made sure I was where I needed to be. He made me a better student in math and even better as a person. Math may not be my favorite subject, but Mr. Rhoades definitely makes math fun.” Her most memorable moment at Garrett was being able to see the football team go to semistate. This year the Railroaders became
Sectional 26 champs, NECC champs and Regional champs. Jasmine Mariah Kittle-Evanoff, 17, is the daughter of Kristina Kittle and Richard Evanoff. She will be attending college to study special education with a minor in psychology. Her career goal is to become a really good teacher. During high school she has been involved with show choir and several musicals and plays. “Mrs. (Linda) Walls has made a significant impact on my education at Garrett High School,” she said. Her most memorable moment would have to be the senior prom. Eslin Marie Antoinette Lebrecht, 18, is the daughter of Joshua and Janis Gordon. Eslin plans to take a year off of school to visit family and then attend IPFW for two years before moving to the Academy of Art University in San Francisco to study character and graphic design. She is aiming to find a career or something she loves to do instead of “getting stuck in a job I dislike.” Eslin has been active in marching band, show choir, academic teams, Tree Huggers, student council and National Honor Society. She rates her education at Garrett a solid 8-out-of-10
based on the staff and opportunities offered. “Compared to the other high schools I have attended, none of them have the same passion amongst the teachers and that most definitely shows within the classrooms. Due to the teachers’ passion here at Garrett, I feel many students take class more seriously and that helps the environment of learning. Considering this, it is easier to focus and learn and that is why I enjoy Garrett so much,” she said. She singled out teachers Nicole Snider, Mark Claxton and Paul Marlow of the among the staff at Garrett. “Mrs. Snider has helped me become more confident and has given me support. Mr. Claxton contributed to my love for current day issues and Mr. Marlow has helped me become a better musician and leader,” she added. Career goals are to excel in her coursework in order to land a successful job as a traveling construction manager or a construction manager/project manager job in Hawaii. Her extra-curricular activities include National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, GHS Student Publications and student council. Honors received during high school were the honor roll and Tri Kappa Academic Honors. She rates her education at Garrett High School an 8-out-of-10. “I believe the close-knit community is second-tonone and allowed for very unique and open discussions during my classes, as teachers and friends seemed more like family,” she said. Teachers at Garrett that have left a significant impact on her life are Mark Claxton, Linda Walls, and Hannah Gilliland. “Mr. Claxton is like a second father and his pride for Garrett radiates. This trip gave me a much greater appreciation for our country and so much knowledge about our history,” Jessa said.

Sports programs strong at Garrett Miranda Lynn Miller, 17, is the daughter of Brian Wade Miller and Vicki Lynn Miller. She plans to take a year off, and then take courses to pursue tattoo and piercing. Shortly after graduation, she plans to start up art commissions. She has been active on the middle school track, volleyball and marching band. In high school she has been a member of the marching band. She earned Notable Performance in Art as a sophomore. She rates Garrett a 7-out-of-10. “I say that because, yes, the education is well learned, but I wish the experience was better regarding social interaction,” Miranda said. “I would say that the sports programs are strong due to how popular they are. I do wish that marching band and show choir
received more attention and were actually at least considered a sport.” She said teachers Paul Marlow and Mark Ober have been a large influence to her life here at Garrett. “I had been in band since fifth grade and joined the Railroader Regiment in seventh grade, so Mr. Marlow has been included in a huge part of my life as well as music. “Art is also another passion of mine and Mr. Ober has been a significant influence in my life and has pushed me to create far more better work than where I started in freshman year,” she added. Her most memorable moment was when she became the Railroader Regiment’s drum major back when she tried out her first time in freshman year. “I had practiced for months prior and decided I wanted to come out of

Changes she would like to see is more study and understanding regarding mental illness. “Honestly, I want to see people gain more knowledge on the idea of mental illness. I wish to see people grasp the concept that mental illnesses are an actual disease and needs to be recognized as one and not as some excuse,” she said. Madisyn Murphy, 18, is the daughter of Kendall and Lorie Murphy. She plans to attend Purdue University to study animal science. Her plans are to graduate from Purdue after four years and enter a College of Veterinary medicine. She has been involved with FFA along with National Honor Society and student council at Garrett. Megan Olivia Newby, 18, is the daughter of Jared and Jenney Newby. She plans to attend Anderson University while playing basketball, and double major in criminal justice and psychology and minor in Spanish. In the future, she plans to
attend law school. “My double-major will prepare me for a solid foreground leading into law school. If I choose otherwise, I would like to work for the FBI and/or work in a forensic field,” she said. She has played softball and basketball during her four years of high school, and was involved in Athletic Leadership Council. She rates her education at Garrett a 10/10. “I learned more than what the books teach you. The teachers invest more time than teaching materials through group projects and discussions. Life lessons are taught within the material,” Megan said. Teacher Mark Claxton, Linda Walls, Jericho Schoof, and Kim Armstrong have made significant contributions to her education at Garrett. “Mr. Claxton not only taught history with enthusiasm and intriguing material, but taught how to live in the real world. He shared personal experiences that opened high school students’ eyes to the real life outside of high school. “Mrs. Walls is a plain genius that demands nothing but the best in high school

students. She taught my college level classes that I can guarantee will excel me in my first year in college. I will forever be grateful for all that she has taught me. “Mr. Schoof inspired me to minor in Spanish. He made learning Spanish fun and interesting. Learning a different language was made fun for me because of his teaching techniques. “Mrs. Armstrong was a crucial teacher, coach and role model throughout my middle school years. She boosted me through tough times but also taught me about history in a projectbased way. She is a teacher that I will have respect for and admire for the rest of my life!” she said. Her thought for change is simple. “Our society needs everybody to love everybody. That is all.”
Teachers Nicole Snider and Mark Claxton have really influenced her high school experience. “They are always there whenever you need and will help you in any way that they can. (Mr. Bobay, the EMT teacher, is also one of my favorites but he’s technically not a teacher,” she said.

Grads rate GHS education highly Ben Purdy, 18, lives in Fort Wayne. He is the son of Kathryn Purdy and Bob Purdy. He will attend Trine University to major in business administration with a career goal to own his own business. He has been active in basketball, baseball and football at Garrett. Ben is a member of the National Honor Society, and has earned All-State, All-Area and All-Conference recognition and Fab15. He rates Garrett High School 9.5 out of 10 as a whole as the best school in the state. “From teachers, to education, to freedoms, etc. However, the only reason I would rate my education as a 9.5/10 is that I feel the academy did not always ask me to do things to the potential I thought I should be doing, meaning I felt that I was not asked to do as much as I think I could of. I felt as I was underachieving at times,” he said. Teacher Mark Claxton made significant contributions to his education, and to my life, he added. Favorite memories are many moments with his friends. Kristin Michelle Ruby, 18, lives in Waterloo. She is the daughter of Brooke Zecca and Dan Ruby. She plans to pursue a career in cosmetology. During high school she completed my cosmetology training through IMPACT Institute. “I’m thankful to Garrett High School and IMPACT for accepting me into the program so I could be licensed right out of high school,” she said. Her favorite teachers at Garrett High School are Mrs. Rhoades and Ms. Lucarelli. “They are both fun and still make sure I get my work done,” she said. Her most memorable moments are all the times she has been with friends and the fun things they have done together.
Nicholas Aaron Sarrazine, 19, is the son of Douglas and Eileen Sarrazine. He plans to continue his study as an automotive technician he began through the Impact Institute while studying engineering technology. Nick would like to own his own auto repair shop one day. He has been active on the high school baseball team and is a member of the National Honor Society. He has received the IMPACT Connected Student Award, Outstanding Academic Achievement in Ag Power, earned 10 ASE Student Certifications and participated in Skills USA two years. Teacher Brie Sprunger and the Interdisciplinary Cooperative Education have provided valuable experience in financial and life skills, he said. “Mr. Kosmowski was a fun teacher and really connected to students while teaching them,” he added. Jenna Schmidt,18, is the daughter of Jennifer Schmidt and Jason Schmidt. She hopes to go to college at some point and get a summer job at her church camp. As of now, she did not have any choices of college but wishes to major in either elementary ducation or music education. She is also considering going to school to become a professional daycare person or babysitter. “I have the high expectation of going to school for as long as I can and then get a job in or around the Garrett area,” she said. Jenna has been a part of the various musicals since the seventh grade, a show choir member since ninth grade, a member in the play her junior year, and a NHS member since the grade 11, as well. She has received a Tri Kappa Scholastic award for the past three years, lettered in show choir for years and has three patches from going to state twice. She rates her education at
Garrett an 8 or 9 on a scale of 1-10. “I love the way that Garrett has so many opportunities to give to their students. I would have liked to have done more in my high school career. There were so many classes that I would have liked to have taken but ran out of time,” Jenna added. “I think that the athletics have the most support out of all the programs. I personally feel that the programs of the arts are struggling. We do have a lot of fundraising that we do but we are afraid to do anything in front of our peers due to the lack of support. “We pay for things out of our own pockets and have things we need built mainly by the workshop students. I also feel like that the academic programs could use a little help as well,” Jenna said. Teacher Mark Claxton made an impact on her life due to his willingness to listen to students’ problems and give constructive criticism. “Mrs. Jen Fast has made an impact on my life by pushing me to be the best of my ability,” she added. Teacher Steve Rhoades has made an impact on her life by being patient with her when she needed help. “Mr. and Mrs. Schoof have both made an impact on my life about how real they are with their students and willingness to help in any way possible, and Mr. Sewelin made science fun. “Mrs. Snider has made an impact on my life by always being a person with whom I can geek and nerd about our favorite television shows and movies,” Jenna said. Her most memorable moment at Garrett High School was all the fun times she had. “With my teachers who made learning fun and telling their stories that made
me laugh, with my friends just hanging out during practice, lunch, and before school, and with my best friend that puts up with me always and goes at least half a morning walk with me,” she said. She would like to see the world be more accepting of everyone and less discrimination about how people look from the outside. “I want to see people treating them as human beings and not like the trash they see on the ground,” Jenna said. Peter Shoudel, 18, is the son of Tom and Sally Shoudel. He plans to attend IPFW and major in registered nursing with a career goal to become a registered nurse. Peter played soccer for two years. “I would rate my education at Garrett a 10-out-of-10. I may not be the smartest student but I have learned so much at here at Garrett and the staff is the best-of-the-best. They want you to learn so much every day and become a better student. And they want to answer your questions to make sure you are doing good,” he said. “Biblical Literature was such a fun class and I got to connect with a bunch of students. Peer tutoring is a very fun class, as well, because you get to help little kids,” he added. Teacher Mark Claxton made a significant contribution in his education. “He always wants to have fun but he also wants you to learn something every day. He is just such a great teacher and teaches things very well,” Peter said. He can’t pick out one specific memorable moment. “I loved my entire Garrett High School experience and I wouldn’t want to change anything,” he said. Looking forward, he

Garrett grads leave legacy of achievement Tyler Matthew Squire Taylor, 18, is the son of Matt and Anna Taylor. He plans to attend Ball State University to major in psychology. He has set his goal to attain a master’s degree in psychology and pursuing a career in that field. He has been active in marching band, football, track and field, show choir, plays, musicals, Spell Team and National Honor Society. He has been listed on the honor roll each year of high school, earned Tri-Kappa Academic achievement, 4.0 GPA, and earned three-year All-Music Award for band. He rates Garrett High School a 9-out-of-10. “There is not much that I can say I didn’t like at Garrett. The one thing that I have not been a fan of is the support system for the arts, at first. But over my four
years in high school, the support for these programs have changed for the greater, and this is what makes Garrett a great school,” he added. Tyler said the school’s music program, both choral and instrumental, is the strongest program at GHS. The music program also deserves more attention and expansion. “The band has achieved great accomplishments over the years, including many state qualifiers and gold medalists at state. They have received the ISSMA All Music Award, one of the most prestigious awards an Indiana band may earn. The Encore! Show Choir has also attended state finals the last 3 years. Out of all the show choirs in the state of Indiana, Encore! Has been in the top-10 in their division,” he said.
Band director Paul Marlow has taught his students much more than just band things. While including a great education on music related topics, politics, current events, history, past experiences, are often taught to his students. “Even though I’m probably never going to use Spanish in my life, Jericho Schoof is a great teacher and is dedicated to teaching his students who want to learn. Although he is just a Spanish teacher, he has taught valuable English related things. Finally, he is just a fun man to be around,” Tyler said. His most memorable moment at GHS was when the academy offered the King’s Island trip for the first time. Tyler said he would like to see more acceptance in the American society on

He plans to attend Ball State University to major in journalism with a minor in sports studies with an ultimate career goal to be a well-respected journalist in the state. “As a sports journalist, my dream is to receive an IHSAA Media Service award for high school sports,” he said. choir and band programs are growing each and every year as well, and the peak of success for them is coming closer every year, would like to see more recognition for them. The program I wish that received much more recognition would have to be the academic teams. Just recently, all of the trophies that past academic teams have received have been moved into storage. It would be nice to see them sitting in a trophy case once again,” he added. While all of his teachers have made significant contributions on his education, Evan said he would have to give the most credit to his English teachers: Stephanie Kroemer, Mark Claxton, Hannah Gilliland, Becky Wright and Linda Walls. “Each one has helped me step outside my comfort zone and helped me to improve my writing skills. Jonelle Furnish, my English team coach, has also helped me learn new things relating to topics I otherwise would have never known had I not joined English Team,” he added. His most memorable moment occurred just last month. “I left my student publications class to make a pillow for my foreign exchange student to receive when they arrived. As I was making my pillow in another classroom, a newspaper trail created led right back to my seat with all of my school materials taped in newspaper, including my book bag, water bottle and computer. That was hands down the funniest and nicest thing anyone has ever done

The less bias in the world, the less fuel that will be added to a consistently growing fire,” he said. Kole Patrick Carl Winebrenner, 18, is the son of Scott and Carla Winebrenner. He plans to attend Indiana University or University of St. Francis to become a doctor. His career goal is to become a premier family physician to have a substantial positive impact on the lives of many citizens each day. He has been active in Railroader soccer and basketball, having won the soccer sportsmanship award three years in a row. Mr. Austin Freels made significant contributions to my education because his classes (biology and biomedical sciences) helped me understand sciences better with his hands-on activities. Mrs. Julie Williams helped me in Algebra 2 become better at math and helped me gain confidence as a young student in high school. His most memorable high school moment was beating Westview in soccer in overtime for the first win against them in years. Also, beating East Noble for the first time ever, the same year defeating Westview.
