jjones@kpcmedia.com BUTLER — The Eastside Class of 2016 will receive diplomas at commencement ceremonies at 2 p.m. Sunday in the high school gymnasium.

The following students are candidates for the top 10 percent of the graduating class.

Each student was asked to respond to a questionnaire about their educational experiences at Eastside. They were asked to identify personal and career goals and plans, how they would rate their education at Eastside, and to identify teachers who made contributions to that education.

Students will be profiled in alphabetical order.

Keagan Riley Biddle

Keagan Biddle, 19, is the son of Matthew and Angela Biddle of Spencerville.

Following graduation, he will attend Cedarville University. His major is undecided, but Biddle is considering linguistics as a course of study.

Following college, his personal goals are to get married and have a family one day. Career goals include being involved with a Christian ministry and pursuing a lifestyle and work experience through which he can worship God. At Eastside, Biddle has been involved in Interact, National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, cross country and track.

His honors include distinguished honor roll, the highest grade average in several classes, student of the month in several

classes and the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award. In addition, Biddle has been named to the Northeast Corner Conference All-Academic Team and an Indiana Regional Academic All-Star.

“Overall, I am satisfied with my education at Eastside,” Biddle said. “There are many things that I believe could have been done better though. Perhaps this is a natural reaction during this transitional period, but I feel somewhat unprepared for the real world and college.

“The math and science programs are excellent,” he said. “I feel adequately prepared in these areas for college. This is the first year in English that I have seen my writing and understanding of literature and grammar significantly improve.”

While math and science are strong programs, Biddle feels these could be made even stronger by adding more courses.

At the same time, he believes integrating material between math and science could make them more practical and applicable to real life.

Biddle would like to see foreign language offerings improved. While he said both French and Spanish are great in terms of literacy, he believes they are not as strong in the communication aspect of learning a foreign language. “The latter helps a person remember a second language better,” Biddle said.

Biddle would like to see more dual-credit opportunities offered in Eastside’s curriculum.

He identified science teacher Mindy Kitchen, math teacher Lonny Emenhiser, math teacher Sandra Gruber, theater and speech teacher Tim Albdert, social studies teacher Jon Hollabaugh and English teacher Tim O’Keefe for making important contributions to his education.

“These teachers love what they do and that makes all the difference,” Biddle said.

“They enjoy the material they teach. They also take one-on-one time to help students improve. Not only have my skills and knowledge increased in the subjects they teach, but my passion and enthusiasm for these subjects has increased as well.”

Following high school, Brock plans to attend Indiana Purdue University Fort Wayne to study computer science.

His future plans include working at a well-paying job and possibly getting married and having a family.

At Eastside, Brock has been involved with FFA, National Honor Society and the high school bowling team.

His honors include honor roll, and mental attitude and most improved awards for bowling.

“I believe the high school bowling program is a very strong and successful sport to take part in,” Brock said. “I think it should receive more attention than it does now from the school.”

Brock identified business teacher Debra Tieman for making a positive impact on his education. “Mrs. Tieman has taught me a great deal of computer education, which I take interest in,” Brock said.

“Eastside has been a blast, and I am upset to be leaving it so soon, but I am excited for what the future holds.”

Crager identified math teacher Lonny Emenhiser and English teacher Tim O’Keefe as making important contributions to his education.

“Mr. Emenhiser is a great math teacher and makes learning easy to understand while always doing as much as he can to ensure my success in his classroom,” Crager said.

“Mr. O’Keefe has done an excellent job teaching my dual-credit English course, and has significantly improved my writing and comprehension skills,” Crager said.

Following graduation, she will attend IPFW to major in dental hygiene.

At Eastside, Dellinger was active in student council, technical theater and served as a wrestling mat maid.

Academic honors include student of the month awards and French.

Dellinger identified chemistry and anatomy courses in the science department and fine arts department as strong points at Eastside.

“I learned the most from them and they were well-taught,” Dellinger said. “They deserve more attention and funding so that they can have more and better materials to teach with.”

Sydney Noelle Fritch, 18, is the daughter of Terry and Teri Fritch of Butler.

After high school, she will attend the University of Evansville to pursue a bachelor’s degree. Her major is undecided, but Fritch said she is considering international business or English as a second language. “Although I am not certain of my major, I am certain my future career will involve traveling the world,” she said.

Promoting cultural understanding is an additional goal.

At Eastside, Fritch has been active in Interact, National Honor Society and theater.

Academic and personal honors include the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA), Rotary Youth Exchange ambassador to Australia, the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Award (HOBY) and distinguished honor roll.

“The lack of dual-credit and honors courses leaves students like me feeling unprepared for the rigorous coursework in college. If Eastside implemented advanced placement courses into the high school, I feel that students would not only be better prepared for college, but also be challenged intellectually.”

Fritch said the math and science departments are strong points at Eastside.

“The teachers are united and committed to improving their classes year after year,” she said.

“The weakest program at Eastside is the English department,” Fritch added. “I feel the department lacks the unity that the math and science departments have.

Each teacher has a different idea on how to write a proper essay. If the English teachers came together and decided to teach the same specific essay structure and formatting, the English teachers would be united in a vital part of their curriculum, and students would also be able to take their writing to a whole new level.”

Fritch identified retired math teacher Connie Bowman as making an important contribution to her education. “Her honors algebra II class was perhaps one of the most challenging classes I ever took during my time at Eastside,” Fritch said. “She made sure her students understood the material and were challenged every single day. Without her phenomenal teaching skills, I would not have been prepared for pre-calculus.”

During high school, Herschberger has been involved with ballet, drama, Amnesty International, Interact, National Honor Society, student council, DeKalb’s VOICE, FFA, Spanish club, theater productions, prom committee, yearbook, cross country, track and mat maid while also working.

Herschberger was named to the Northeast Corner Conference All-Academic Team. She also received awards for pre-calculus and U.S. history. She has received student of the month awards in accounting, chemistry and geometry.

She also won the senior girls division the American Legion Americanism and Government test.

“My experience at Eastside has been positive, thanks to a few select teachers,” Herschberger said. “The school as a whole seems biased with what students receive opportunities. I have worked incredibly hard at Eastside, and I feel as though my efforts have not been recognized quite the way they should have.

“I think the honors classes are not harder, just more work, and to me, honors should be more challenging, not just a longer assignment,” she said.

“I do not think any of the departments specifically need improvement,” she said.

“They all have strong and weak aspects. I think the math department is great. They seem organized and I have never seen a problem concerning math.

“Some may say the English department needs work, but aside from having a lot of first-year teachers, the English department is just as good as any of the other ones.”

Herschberger identified the following teachers as making significant contributions to her education: business teacher Bobbie Moughler, English teacher

Madison Renae Herschberger, 18, is the daughter of Tammie and Derek Herschberger of St. Joe. After graduation, Herschberger will attend Indiana University as a direct admit student into the College of Arts and Sciences. She plans to pursue a dual major

Troye Samuel Hook, 19, is the son of Gregory and Karin Hook of Butler.

Following high school, Hook plans to attend Purdue University to pursue a degree in agronomy. Future plans include learning for a lifetime and operating the family farm outside of Butler.

Hook has been active in band, National

Honor Society, 4-H and FFA. In FFA, he has held the offices of chapter president and district sentinel. In FFA, Hook has had the opportunity to compete in several competitions. Within 4-H, Hook has participated in several projects, including gardening and steers.

Academic honors include second place as an individual in state FFA crop judging competition and class winner of the American Legion’s Americanism and Government Test as a sophomore, junior and senior. In 2012, as a member of Eastside’s Marching Blazer Pride band, Hook competed at the state finals in Indianapolis.

“We have an exceptional math department at Eastside,” Hook said. “The program has very good and persistent teachers.

“There is a part of our school and others that are fading away. I believe our vocational end of school is lagging.

Schools focus so much on academics than the vocational side of education. Yes, we offer the Impact Institute, but it is important to have opportunities within the school too. ➤ Scholars, Page 6

“Mr. Hollabaugh provided insight with history and made the class fun,” she said.

“Mr. Emenhiser is the best math teacher I have ever had. He teaches well, makes it easy to understand and is always willing to answer questions.”

Scholars from Page 5 “Not all kids are created equal,” Hook said. “It is important that kids do go to college, but there are opportunities and demand in skilled jobs, and those jobs are good jobs.”

Hook identified agriculture teacher Sam Reinoehl as having the biggest influence on his education.

“As my FFA advisor, he has provided a lot of expertise with leadership, and he has guided me throughout my high school career,” Hook said. “There are very few teachers that can sit down with students and go beyond school work to discuss life like he has.”

Jon Trevor Imhoff departments are strong with good teachers. Social studies programs, such as history and government, are likewise very good.

Improvements are needed in the English department, and Imhoff would have liked the opportunity to learn about skilled trades such as electrical, plumbing and HVAC. “Vocational does allow you to learn some about these skills, but vocational does not fit into

Her goals include maintaining a grade-point average over 3.5, graduate, maintain a job and coach softball.

At Eastside, she has been involved in Spanish club, student internships, basketball, volleyball and softball.

Academic honors include distinguished honor roll recognition and student of the month awards on three occasions. She has achieved all-conference and all-area honors in softball.

Miller said all teachers she’s had at Eastside “have pushed me to excel. It’s a great, friendly environment and there’s good use of technology.”

Miller would like to see the art department receive more recognition.

She identified physical education teacher Josh Schache, English teacher Tim O’Keefe, math teacher Lonny Emenhiser and social studies teacher Jon Hollabaugh for making important contributions to her education.

Katelynn Shepperd, 18, is the daughter of Ed Shepperd of Butler.

Following graduation, she will attend Purdue University to pursue a major in veterinary medicine. Career plans include becoming a veterinarian for large animals.

“My education has been adequate for the standards that need to be met,” Shepperd said. “More could have been done on some subjects to become better prepared for college.”

Shepperd said the math department has a strong teaching staff with great courses.

The agriculture program seems to be dwindling with declining interest from students. This is an important program to maintain at Eastside, she said.

Shepperd identified science teacher Mindy Kitchen for making a significant contribution to her education.

“She is always willing to take the time for students to understand the material.

Mrs. Kitchen wants all of her students to learn and to succeed.”

Holly Jo Strong, 18, is the daughter of Adam and Joyce Strong of St. Joe. After high school, she plans to attend Indiana Wesleyan University to study accounting. “My goals are to become the best person I can be,” she said. “I strive to follow God’s plan for my life and be a beneficial member of my community.”

At Eastside, Strong has been active in musical theater, Interact and National Honor Society. Academic honors include honor roll, student of the month awards and department awards for Spanish III, U.S. history and geography.

“I would rate my education at Eastside to be fairly good,” she said. “I have learned the things that I have needed to know. Some schools probably have a stronger academic program but Eastside does a good job with what it is provided with.” ➤ Scholars, Page 7

Following graduation, she will attend Purdue University. She has been accepted into the pre-pharmacy program, and by 2022, she expects to have eraned a pharmacy doctorate degree. Her career goal is to become a pharmacist.

At Eastside, Sutter has been active in FFA, National Honor Society, Interact, student council, academic mentor, Amnesty International, theater, track and as a wrestling manager. Academic honors include awards in Earth and space science and anatomy.

“I would rate my education at Eastside as 9. I feel that I was prepared for college and I have enjoyed my experiences here,” Sutter said. “I like the teachers and friends I have made.

“I do not believe Eastside offers enough honors classes that many other schools do.”

As a junior, Sutter participated in the mentoring program, but it was not continued this year. “I enjoyed helping younger students and felt that I equally learned from them,” she said.

Student council could be improved through volunteer time given to the

community and making sure school dances happen.

Sutter identified science teacher Greg Hartman as having a positive influence on her education. “I enjoyed the lessons he had because they were interesting, and engaged the students with videos, visuals and music,” she said. “He was not a controlling teacher and was very good at preparing us for each test.

“He allowed music to be played in class, took us outside for certain lessons and made each day something to look forward to,” she said. “I never felt that he chose favorites, which was refreshing from other teachers. Mr. Hartman is the most relatable and well-prepared teacher I have ever had.”
