Bowlers want to reach semi-state again BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com BUTLER — Eastside’s bowling team is used to being one of the top programs in the Northeast Bowling Conference. The Blazers graduated two seniors from a team that finished undefeated in conference action and advanced to the Indiana High School Bowling semi-state round. Lost to graduation were Kyle Brock and individual sectional champion Steven Webb. Back for the Blazers are five experienced bowlers, including seniors Matt David and Kameron Hoff. “It’s definitely going to be a rebuilding year,” said boys co-coach Mark Cline. “Over the years, we’ve lost some decent talent. We have three strong kids and four that are coming along. “I don’t think we’ll run away with the conference like we did last year when we went undefeated,” he added. “The conference has lost a lot of talented kids.” “It’s no different than any other sport where it kind of comes and goes in cycles,” added co-coach Ryan David. “In Little League, you’ll have a good team and then some of those kids move up. I think that’s where we’re at. “There’s some really talented kids bowling in the youth league that will be really good,” coach David added. As a junior, Matt David made the final four at the individual sectional and captured the regional championship. David probably has the most experience of any bowling, said his father. “His strength is his ability to play to about any part of the lane.” A four-year bowler, Hoff, a lefty, gives the Blazers the ability to succeed. “He never sees any change in oil (patterns),” coach Cline said. “As the ball moves through the oil, it picks it up and carries it down the lane. With one or two guys

bowling on his side of the lane, you basically have fresh oil every game.” Junior Zack Cline “has come a long way,” said coach David. “He’s really working hard to try to catch up to them.” Also returning are juniors Camden Miller and Nick Nodine. Both have shown steady improvement since moving up from the junior high program. “They’re all capable of big games,” coach Cline said. “Matt’s probably our best bowler, but the rest aren’t far behind.” “There’s going to be times where Zack will shine, and there’s going to be times where it plays into Camden’s game,” coach David said. “It all depends on the pattern. It’s just like the PBA bowlers. They all have their likes and dislikes, and it’s no different with these kids. “Somebody’s going to bowl real good in Angola and somebody’s going to bowl real good in Auburn,” coach Cline said. This year, the NEBC will bowl on what Cline described as a sports pattern, like what bowlers experienced at semi-state. “It’s a little more difficult to play on,” he explained. “It makes a shot-maker out of the kids. They’ll have to learn to grind these games out” by converting spares and avoiding splits. New to the team are freshmen Branden Ely and James McNabb, both up from the junior high program. Getting kids interested in bowling can be difficult if they haven’t been exposed to it before high school, or if their parents don’t bowl, Cline and David said. Having time to work with first-time bowlers can be a challenge as well. Conversely, one advantage to having newcomers is they haven’t developed bad habits and can be taught proper technique. The primary goal is to advance to the semi-state as a team for the third straight season.

Competition pushing girls BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com BUTLER — With seven bowlers on the roster, there should be more competition for spots on Eastside’s girls bowling team this season. Three of the girls bowled last season — senior Alyssa Moore and sophomores Kelly Hartley and Lindsay Wallace. New to the team are senior Megan Kapp, sophomore Kristen Ritchie and freshmen Karen Baldwin and Ziayra Hulbert. Lost to graduation were three-time girls sectional champion Briana Marquis, now bowling at Indiana Tech, and Dena Baldwin. “We have a young team. It’s going to be more competitive for spots,” said coach Jon Wallace Jr. Last year, there were five bowlers — just enough for a full team — but that also guaranteed each girl could compete each match. “They have to roll off for their spots,” added boys co-coach Ryan David. “They really have to think about it and work at it.” “With Alyssa, toward the end of last year, she was kind of babying it,” coach

Wallace said. “Now, we’ve got her back to throwing the ball instead of babying her throws. She’s putting 100 percent into it.” The younger Wallace is left-handed and can post good scores with concentration and emphasis on her skills. Hartley is developing consistency, coach Wallace said. Hartley has been putting in time after practice to improve her game. Kapp previously bowled at Leo. Ritchie is a first-year bowler. Baldwin and Hulbert are up from the junior high program. Hulbert was part of Eastside’s junior high state championship team. Last year’s Blazers won three matches. “We want to win a few more matches,” coach Wallace said. “The girls’ program has struggled. Most years, they don’t have a full team. We want to be competitive in the conference.” David and boys co-coach Mark Cline have been working with Wallace to share knowledge they picked up from longtime bowling coach Eric Dohner.

Eastside boys need pieces to fit together BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com BUTLER — Eastside boys basketball coach Ryan Abbott expects the 2016-2017 edition to be a “player-led” bunch with experienced players that can compete in a variety of environments and styles. “Our hope is that fans will see unselfishness, togetherness and toughness watching us play,” Abbott said. “We are versatile in that we have the ability to succeed in a variety of paces from slow to up-tempo. With that said, good teams will make you beat them in the half-court, and this must be an area of focus for us.” The Blazers finished 18-6 last season, but lost Austin Baker (nine points per game, 128 rebounds) and Landen Brow (8.5 points per game, 48 three-point field goals) to graduation. Four seniors and two juniors bring a wealth of experience to the floor. Seniors All-Northeast Corner Conference players Cade Willard and Jacob Thompson, returning seniors Jordan Yoder and Dalton Rieke and juniors Caleb Ballentine and Aaron Dean all have roles to fill. Abbott said Willard, a four-year varsity player, is “one of the most intelligent basketball players I’ve had the privilege of coaching. He has the keys to our team, and will be expected to lead with his voice, work ethic and competitiveness each day. “His game is well-rounded in that he’s capable of leading us in any statistical category on a given night.” Willard was second on the team in scoring at 11.5 points per game. He was first on the team in steals with 35, second in three-pointers with 34, second in assists with 67 and third in rebounds with 127.

Thompson gives the Blazers an anchor at either end of the floor. “Jake’s low-post presence and Willard Thompson high-post skills are rare in high school basketball,” Abbott said. “Defensively, he must communicate to others and command the paint for us.” Thompson led the team in scoring at 11.8 points per game and grabbed 207 rebounds. Abbott said Yoder “may be the most improved player in our program from this time last year. His dedication in the gym and in the weight room are sure to be difference makers for him and our team. His ability to shoot, score off the dribble and defend are tremendous assets for our team.” Yoder averaged 3.3 points per game last year and connected on 17 three-point field goals. Rieke will be counted upon for energy whenever and wherever he plays. “He is a difference maker for us,” Abbott said. “He must lead us in hustle plays such as loose balls, charges and even energy. Dalton is the player you love playing with, but hate playing against, and we need him to be that in order for our team to be successful.” Ballentine and Dean both saw quality varsity minutes last season. This year, they will both be counted upon to contribute more at both ends of the floor. Ballentine scored 5.5 points per game while contributing 21 assists and 18 steals. Dean had 14 assists in 21 games. “They will be expected to learn from

their experiences and grow into larger, more significant roles,” Abbott said. Juniors Andrew Steffen and Jordan Esposito will also be counted upon to contribute at the varsity level throughout the season. While the Blazers won 16 games a year ago, that was last year, Abbott said. “The sooner we can understand this is a new season with a new and different team, the better we will be,” he said. “We have talented pieces to the puzzle, and a system that we believe in, but we understand that we must become a true team, and that nothing good happens

without hard work. “A truly successful season can occur if we become a true team, play for one another, and are determined to be the hardest working team on the floor on a given night.” To get there, the Blazers can’t do it with just five or six players. “Our bench must bring us energy, hustle plays and fulfill their individual roles,” Abbott said. “I am very excited about this team having the potential to be a ‘player-led’ ➤ Boys Basketball, Page 9

Youth movement has wrestlers optimistic BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com BUTLER — Eastside’s varsity wrestling team will field a fairly young team this season, with just one senior and three juniors. That means several wrestlers will counted upon to take on leadership roles during the 2016-2017 season, head coach Joel Richman said. The Blazers, who finished 12-13 in dual meets last year, graduated four seniors from that squad, all of whom won 20 matches or more. That doesn’t mean the cupboard is bare for the Blazers — far from it — but the returning wrestlers will need to be good role models for several freshmen and sophomores on the roster. Trae Hand is the lone senior. Last year, he finished 11-10, with eight wins by pin and two by decision. “Trae will grow into that leadership role,” Richman said. “We want him to be positive with the guys around him and lead them in the right direction that we want for our team. It’s a different position for him.” On the mat, Hand is “aggressive when he needs to be. He fights hard and he puts his heart into the match,” said the Blazer coach. Hand should fit it around 145 or 152 pounds this season. Returning juniors are Seth Burns (14-5) and Cable Leeper (26-11). Burns had a promising season until he suffered a season-ending injury at the Defiance, Ohio invitational. Burns recorded six pins and won four other matches by decision. Leeper recorded 13 pins and won twice each by decision, major decision and technical fall. Burns should wrestle at 126 pounds and Leeper will slot in at 132 or 138 pounds. “Seth’s all healed up,” Richman said. “He’s ready to get back out there. He

Leeper

had a great season going. He’s looking to push forward. “He’s pretty aggressive on his feet. He can rack up a lot of points if needed. “Cable gets out there and likes to throw. He’s pretty aggressive,” the Blazer coach said. “He wants to beat guys quick. He likes throwing them to the mat and get quick pins.” New to the program is junior Keenon Smith, a transfer from North Side. Smith has fit in nicely with his new teammates and has shown the willingness to work with other wrestlers. Smith could wrestle at 138 or 145 pounds. Sophomores Laik Minnick and Brock Munsey got substantial mat time last season. Minnick finished 10-8 with four pins and four wins by decision. Munsey was 15-9, also with four pins and four wins by decision. Minnick could wrestle at 152 pounds. He brings skill to the mat and attended several camps in the off-season to get better, Richman said. Munsey is a candidate at 138 pounds. Munsey loves wrestling and is willing to learn. Sophomore Alejandro Davis didn’t wrestle last year, but has junior high experience. He could compete for mat time at 152 pounds. John Martenies was 6-22 last season. He could compete at 182. New to the program is exchange student Matteo Durzu. Durzu could see mat time at 138.

While they are freshmen, most of the newcomers have experience from wrestling in the junior high program. Freshman Takoda Kissinger could compete at 106 pounds. Treyven McKinley could step in at 126 pounds. Blake Rowe is a candidate at 145 and Anson Hill could wrestle at 152. Vance Erwin could contribute at 170. Hunter Miller is a candidate at 195. Logan Johnson could compete at 220 and Chase Leeper could wrestle at heavyweight. Another freshman, Keegan Smith, is injured and might miss the season, Richman said. “They’re jumping right in head-first,” Richman said. “Most of them should be competitive. Most of them have experience wrestling, but it could be different moving up from junior high. “We’re pretty excited to get going,” Richman added. “We’ve got a pretty young team, (but with) a lot of freshmen who have wrestling experience. We’re trying to build them up to varsity athletes. “We’ll be missing a few weight classes as a team, but we should be able to put a decent wrestler in every weight class we can fill, and go out there and give them some good matches.” As with last season, the Blazers will have some open classes, as several wrestlers fall into the 138-152-pound weight range. While it may be costly in team results, it means the wrestlers will have to work hard to get varsity mat time. “We’re definitely going to have some battles for spots, that’s for sure,” Richman said. “We haven’t wrestled a lot live yet, but when we have, you can see there’s good competition. They’re really going after each other, and that’s what we really like to see.” Lost to graduation were Tate Burns (39-4), Gage DeLong (25-10), Jennings Nickolson (24-12) and Codey Ross (23-17).

WRESTLING SENIOR

Jeff Jones

Trae Hand is the lone senior on the 2016-2017 Eastside wrestling team.

“The guys are hard-working and willing to learn,” Richman said. “It’s kind of different from years past where we’ve relied on those upper guys. We’re looking for those freshmen to fill some big shoes.” Assistant coaches will be Brian Miller, Brian Miller, Brandon Miller, Daimon Heffley, Chris Hedges and Matt Beard. Longtime assistant coach Ron Mausteller has stepped away from the program after 25 years. The wrestlers open their season at the Wawasee Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday. Their lone home dual meet is Dec. 7 against North Side.

Eastside girls want to check more boxes BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com BUTLER — Winning and losing are two sides of the same coin. Both are contagious. When you get used to losing, you often find ways to lose or you don’t expect to win. When you get used to winning, you often find ways to win, and you expect to win. Eastside’s girls basketball team has been fighting to shake the losing tag for some time now. Last year, while the Blazers finished with a 10-15 record, they did manage to break through and capture the program’s first sectional championship since the 1978-1979 season. Now, with that monkey off their backs, coach Shane Conwell wants his players to embrace winning and everything that it takes to succeed. “Looking back now, it was an accumulation of four years,” Conwell said. “It took time, it took patience and it took a sense of accomplishment that all four years combined led to that. “At the time, you think of it as a great season, but now, as I look at it, it was four years of great work to get to that point. “I told the girls, ‘That’s the easiest one you’re going to get,’” Conwell said. “Now comes the true test of how many more can you get? Our focus is raising the bar and just becoming better this year than what we were last year. “The games will take of themselves, the wins will take care of themselves. As long as we raise our bar of excellence, I think we’re going to be OK.” The Blazers graduated two players, but the team’s top six scorers, rebounders, playmakers and defenders return. Junior Lindsey Beard led the team with 403 points, including 41 three-pointers. She was the team’s leading rebounder at just

under five boards per contest. “It’s only going to get more difficult for Lindsey,” Conwell said. “The better you get as an individual, the more pressure that is put on you; you have greater expectations. “She has to learn how to control those expectations and how to manage that within the game-plan.” Senior Hannah Yoder scored just under nine points a game. She was second on the team with 24 three-pointers. In addition, Yoder was second on the team with 34 steals and third with just over four rebounds. Senior Emma Moughler tallied just under seven points per game. She grabbed four rebounds per game and had 34 steals. “Their leadership over the summer and at the end of last season was phenomenal,” Conwell said of his seniors. “It’s everything you would want your seniors to do. They get it, and it’s exactly where you want them to be heading into their senior year.” Their roles haven’t changed. “Just be them, not change who they are,” he explained. “Just do what they can do.” Junior Maddisyn Heffley registered six points per game. She contributed 56 steals and more than four rebounds per contest. Junior Olivia Yoder came into her own toward the end of the season, scoring just over four points per game while finishing second on the team with just under five rebounds per game.

Jeff Jones

Eastside’s girls basketball coaches are shown. From left, are Chadd Baker, head coach Shane Conwell, Nate Young and Lisa Johnson.

Junior Raegan Johnson came off the bench to score just over five points per game, including 19 three-pointers. Johnson added nearly two rebounds per game in that role. As with Moughler and Hannah Yoder, Conwell expects Heffley, Johnson and Olivia Yoder to “just be them, just be a little bit better than they were last year.” Depending on the game, it could be a different player making an important contribution. “Every day in practice, it seems like somebody different is stepping up,” Conwell said. “There’s a bunch of different girls. I know some people are going to show up and be X factors this year. “The biggest thing I have for the new

girls is embracing what we’re all about,” the Blazer coach said. “If they can just embrace what we’ve built this program to be like, then they’re going to fit in just fine.” The more experienced players have been through the battles and know what it takes to succeed. “The biggest thing is experience and knowing what it takes to get to that point,” Conwell said. “You can’t teach that. You can’t have them read a book or show them a video. You’ve got to go through it. “They all know now what it takes. When I say something, they know the fight’s got to be real, and they know it. ➤ Girls Basketball, Page 9

Conwell likes his team’s overall speed and depth. “We’ve checked off something that we’ve wanted to do.
