What Easter means to me
Easter is the most important day of my year. It is the focal point of all my planning and labor, the day of greatest joy, celebrating the event that gives meaning to my existence. For if Jesus did not rise from the dead, then nothing in Christianity makes any sense at all. The Catholic lives from Sunday to Sunday, and from Easter to Easter. As a Franciscan, I FRIAR BOB notice that even my SHOWERS emotional life gets St.. Antony of Padua caught up in the flow of the liturgical Catholic Church seasons. And as a pastor, even my calendar centers on the Feast of the Resurrection. Easter is more than one day, of course. First off, Easter is the culmination of Holy Week, eight intensive days from Palm Sunday to Easter morning. Palm Sunday sees the great palm procession and the first reading of the passion of Jesus Christ. On Tuesday, we drive to Fort Wayne to celebrate Mass with Bishop Kevin Rhoades at the Catholic Cathedral. This is called the Chrism Mass or the Mass of Oils, because the bishop blesses the different holy oils used in Catholic ceremonies throughout the year. Throughout the year, anytime there is a baptism, a confirmation, or the anointing of a sick person, we use the oils blessed in Ho9ly Week and remember Easter. On Holy Thursday, the priest washes the people’s feet. This act of humble service reminds me that my job is first and foremost to serve the poor, welcome sinners, seek out the strangers, open the doors of the church to refugees and the lost – and only after that am I to tend the “saved” of the congregation. On Good Friday, the pastor begins the liturgy by lying face down on the floor in the middle of the church. This reminds me that I, too, am a sinner. I am one of these lost souls, one of these strangers

whom the People of God welcome in their mercy. If it were not for the mercy of the people, I could never survive this job. If it were not for the mercy of God, I could never survive this life. After that, we hear the story of Christ’s passion yet again, because it is our story, and we can never hear it often enough. These are also days of fasting and penance, so that my whole body can become a prayer. The biggest and most exciting Mass of the whole year begins in the darkness of Holy Saturday. The Great Easter Vigil begins each year, as it has done for thousands of years, with a bonfire. In the light of the fire we pray for the light of Christ to guide us on our way. There are seventeen readings from the Scriptures in this Mass – although here in Angola we do not do them all. From the creation of the world in Genesis One to the resurrection of the Savior in the Gospels, this recapitulation of the Bible fills me every year with every emotion from sorrow to joy, from repentance to gratitude. I love it. It’s my favorite Mass of the year. There are baptisms and confirmations, I get to sprinkle people with holy water (here’s a secret: most priests find it fun to throw water at people!), we ring bells and light candles, there is incense and organ music and wonderful singing. It is nearly midnight before we are done, but that it why it is called a Midnight Mass! Easter Day has always been for me a social event as well. After Church, there are few pleasures as meaningful as sharing food and conversation with the people who are part of my life. The one just seems to flow from the other. We prepared for Easter all the forty days of Lent, and now we celebrate Easter non-stop for the fifty days until Pentecost, the final chapter of the Easter Season. These ninety days – the ninety days that give meaning to the existence of Christianity – are the axis around which my whole year turns. My planning and preparation for the next Easter usually begins a week or so after Pentecost! Easter is never very far from my mind.

Lent is a time to reflect This Easter, bring new life to Lent is a time for us to reflect on our lifestyle as we live as His children in His world. The glories of the Epiphany season are now behind us. We were witnesses to the proof of who Jesus is and that is: the God-man, Jesus Christ – our Savior and our friend. How did He do this? Now we come back to our three dimensional world and the suffering and the conflict that plague us here.

We are now in the season of Lent in our church year. Lent is a time of heart reflection on how we are really living our lives. We must be aware that we are sinners, and that disease and death; both physical and spiritual have stained each and every one of us. And so during this Lenten Season, forty days until the glories of His resurrection, what must we do? We seek to be close to Him, to ask for forgiveness and for true knowledge of Him and His will. How? By reading His Word; being in Sunday morning Sunday School and Worship Services, as well as attending Bible Class and Wednesday night worship service. Take time to read Ephesians 6:10-19 where we learn how to put on the full armor of God. You really can! See you in church ! - Pastor

Spring is an exciting time for food in the little farming village where I live in the northeast of England. Wild garlic and asparagus grow as high as the lambs bounce, daffodils tickle the playing fields and fresh optimism blows through the community as the days get longer and the farmers get busier. But nowhere is the celebration of spring more happily played out than on the dinner table on Easter Sunday. Though my family is Hindu, having lived in England for over 30 years has meant we celebrate the cultural bits of Easter, which includes the Sunday feast with family and friends. We always have leg of lamb as our centerpiece with the season’s freshest greens to accompany it. Still, we can’t help but spice up our lamb a little with warming See LAMB page A13

Hunting for eggs, hunting for Jesus As I think back to Easter memories as a child, a few images immediately pop into my mind: Easter baskets, new clothes, and Easter egg hunts. I think hunting for Easter eggs stood out the most to me because it varied so much from year to year. Since my parents were divorced, we had a different “hider” every other year for Easter. PASTOR My mom would DARYL typically hide eggs EMOWREY outside in places that Calvary Lutheran we could find them easily. Those Easter Church Angola egg hunts became more like Easter egg races, with us trying to out run each other so that we could be the one with the most eggs (and therefore the most candy, you know, the true goal of Easter). When we

hunted for Easter eggs with my dad, we always did it indoors and he would have some easy eggs to find, just lying around the house, and he had some particularly challenging spots. He loved to watch us fly around the house picking up the easy ones and then scratch our heads as we all could not find the last couple that he had hid. Those were true hunts, and eventually we had to even work together, canvasing the house from top to bottom. If we were still stumped, we had to get clues from dad until we could finally find the very last egg, and what a triumph that was! It did not matter who got that egg, as long as it was found. In thinking about all of this hunting, I wondered why we did it. What in the world does hiding eggs and searching for them have to do with the resurrection of Christ? I had learned during my undergraduate studies that eggs were a symbol of re-birth for spring, even before Christians used them as symbols for Easter. I did not know until recently

that the church sanctioned the eggs for use and likened them to the tomb from which Christ arose. Evidently, in early Easter egg hunts (and maybe in some places today, though certainly not at my house) kids would roll the eggs as they found them to symbolize the rolling away of the stone from the tomb. The Easter egg hunts were also supposed to remind us of the women who went to the tomb expecting to find Jesus there. It seems the premise here is that the women, and later the disciples, went out searching for Jesus, which would explain why we hunt for Easter eggs. However, a review of the story (in any Gospel) would show a much different ending. The women and the disciples who go to the tomb do not hear the news of the angels and instantly think “Jesus must be out there somewhere, let’s go find him!” Instead, they either run away in fear, lock themselves away in a house, or cry at the tomb long enough for Jesus to show up. In all of these instances, it is Jesus
who reveals himself to the shaken up, terrified women and disciples. Jesus does not make them hunt for him, but instead comes to them in their moment of need to comfort them, to remind them of their mission, and to send them back out into the world to proclaim the good news that Christ has risen to heaven! Because of the resurrection, we can trust the promises of abundant life that Christ offers. So really, as we think about it, we are the eggs in Easter. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ diligently seeks us out, seeks to find each and every one of us, to offer us this same promise of life. Jesus searches for all of us, not to run home bragging to the Father about all of the people he has found, or crack us open and find the delicious, chocolaty reward inside, but to fill us with his love, his light, and his peace. May we, this Easter season, allow our tough shells to crack in Jesus’ hands so that we can receive these wonderful gifts Christ desires to share with us.

Easter is the greatest gift we ever received Basically if it were not for Easter life would have no meaning. Easter is the greatest gift mankind has ever received, because on that first Easter Sunday Christ arose from the grave and in doing so, he gave eternal life in heaven to all who accept him as their Lord and Truly Risen Savior and seek to follow him! Christ has conquered death! REV. MERLE St. Paul tells us R. HOLDEN “Absent from the New Life Lutheran body, present with Church of Waterloo the Lord!” Now as Christians we need no longer fear death because after death comes eternity with Christ in heaven. If there were no Easter we would still

be awaiting the Messiah. Sadly, only Jews would be awaiting the Messiah. As Gentiles the rest of us would be totally lost. We need to remember that Christ loved each of us so much that he eagerly died on a cross — a horrible death — so that those of us who accept him as our Lord and Truly Risen Savior might have the forgiveness of all our sins if we repent of our sins and ask God to forgive them. Heaven is so specular that we as mere humans cannot begin to imagine it! We will walk streets paved with gold. We will drink living water. We will eat fruit from the tree of life. No more death and no more disease and no more sin. The invitation has been extended to all, but sadly, many will reject the invitation. Why? Because they love their life of sin and darkness and they reject the light, which is Christ. The Bible tells us the day is surely
coming when Christ will separate the sheep from the goats. Let me clue you in here — you most assuredly want to be a sheep, because the goats will be cast into hell for all of eternity. Oh yes, there is a hell. Christ himself talks about hell a great deal in the Bible. They will be cast into hell, not because Christ wanted them in hell, but because they rejected the invitation to accept Christ as the Lord and Truly Risen Savior, and instead of following Christ, they are following Satan. Unfortunately, they will follow Satan straight into hell. Despite all the troubles in world and in our own country I remain an optimist. Why? Because I know how it all ends. Christ wins and wins big. Satan loses and loses horribly. Easter gives us the invitation to follow Christ — the greatest gift we will ever receive! PRAISE GOD!

ANGOLA — Rain added to the intensity, drama and emotion of last year’s St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church presentation of the Passion Play. The grounds of the church, 700 W. Maumee St., will again be transformed for the outdoor, live play at 3 p.m., Good Friday, March 25. The Hispanic Ministry of St. Anthony will present the Passion, which is the focus of Easter, depicting Jesus’ crucifixion. It will be presented in both English and Spanish. More than 20 members of the Hispanic Ministry of all ages were in last year’s play. It featured elaborate, colorful costumes that were created by the parish’s sewing ministry. Props were handcrafted, like the large wooden crucifix. See PASSION page A12

What is coming next? Resurrection Sunday The electronic media today gives people immediate access to what is happening right now with breaking news from across the country, what the weather is doing, and the scores of the ball games. But it doesn’t stop there, also available are forecasts, opinions, and projections PASTOR TIM of what to expect. MILLER People have a full picture painted out Clear Lake Lutheran for them of what is going to happen next except when it comes to death. With this they have a disconnect and don’t want to go there. Yet if we see and believe what Jesus did on the Cross for us and that he rose from the dead we know what is coming.

Jesus took our punishment for sin when he suffered on the cross, and then he rose victorious on the third day. What is coming next? Jesus tells us, “Because I live, you also will live.” (John 14:19) Jesus tells us, “My sheep hear my voice and I know them, and they follow me. I give unto them eternal life, and no one can snatch them out of my hand.” (John 10:27-28) And Jesus tells us, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) Belief in his death for us brings eternal life. Faith in his sacrifice on the cross causes us to be declared holy. And trusting in his resurrection from the dead brings us forgiveness. Our celebration of the resurrection brings much joy and hope. Because of Jesus we know what is coming after death.

Resurrection Sunday (Easter) will soon be upon us. For some, it is a time to go to brunch or open Easter baskets, or even collect hidden eggs. Some will have a family gathering with a ham dinner and all the fixings. Yet, one may wonder if there might be something more to this unusual that never SHAUN holiday seems to stay in one DUFAULT place on the calendar. On that day, a person who was crucified and announced dead on the Friday before Easter arose from the grave. He is alive now with a body that has been

transformed. The empirical evidence for this event is so well attested that the best attorney could not punch holes in it. Over five hundred eyewitnesses have seen the resurrected Lord. If the resurrection did not happen, then I and many who have gone before me have misrepresented God. (I Corinthians 15:15 ESV) The primary means of observing this important day is when believers participate together in the Lord’s Supper. Alongside this practice, we rejoice on Easter Sunday that Jesus is Risen! We are reminded by the Apostle Paul that, “If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied. The meaning of Good Friday METRO CREATIVE CONNECTION
Good Friday is a Christian holiday that is celebrated every year on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday. Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary, the location outside of Jerusalem’s walls where the crucifixion took place. Though Good Friday is considered a holiday and is a legal holiday in many countries across the globe, the commemoration is not characterized by the festive atmosphere many holidays inspire. In fact, in the fourth century, the Apostolic Constitutions described Good Friday as a day of mourning and prayer. In addition, many Christians fast on Good Friday, eating only one full meal and two smaller meals that do not add up to a full meal. Christians believe that commemorating the death of Christ helps to remind them
of the sacrifices that Christ made and the human sin that contributed to his death. The observance of Good Friday has existed for centuries. According to Catholic Online, the Catholic Church does not celebrate Mass on Good Friday, though church services held on Good Friday correspond to the divisions of a traditional Mass. These services include the Liturgy of the Word, during which the Passion of Jesus Christ is read; the intercessory prayers for all people, including non-Christians; the Veneration of the Cross, during which the crucifix is unveiled to the congregation; and the Holy Communion. During these services, the church organ and bells are silent. Good Friday is one of the holiest days of the year for Christians across the globe. This year Good Friday is celebrated on March 25.

The gift that keeps on giving As I pondering what I wanted to share with you I was drawn back to my very first Christmas as a believer in Christ. I know, this is supposed to be about Easter but it was because of Easter that made that Christmas different than any other Christmas in my life. As far back as PASTOR I could remember KEVIN MARSH before that Christmas Butler United it was all about the Methodist Church presents but that year it was all about the Presence. Before, it was about gifts that were perishable and limited but that year it was about an eternal gift that has no limits on what it can do. All these changes came because earlier that year I had met and given my heart to the

Resurrected Savior, Jesus Christ. That Christmas was also the one where I sang in the Christmas Cantata at church. The choir director asked me to share what Christmas meant to me at a certain point in the program. After much thought and prayer I finally came up with what I wanted to share that night.. It was a simple little message but for me the most profound thought of my life at that time. The message I shared was, “Jesus is the gift that keeps on giving.” We were celebrating the birth of Jesus but I was there because I had met the resurrected Jesus in May of that year. It was because of the Easter promise that I was able to look at Christmas with a whole new set of eyes. It was because of the resurrection that I was given a second chance in life. It is the phenomenal grace of God that has made a tremendous impact on my life and that drives me to share my faith with others.

The event brought Spanishand English-speaking parishioners together. The Rev. Bob Showers, St. Anthony’s pastor, said that’s the beauty of the play because it works on so many levels. Those who auditioned for the play were able to choose their roles. Jose Guzman played the part of King Herod. The plays is a major part in his culture and family traditions, he said. “My uncle, Abel Reyna, did this in his hometown in Mexico,” Guzman said. “They wanted to teach the kids what this means. It’s a tradition. Most of our family is in the community.” Lent concludes with Easter, which is Sunday, March 27. Admission to The Passion Play is free.

In India, you’ll often hear meat described as “so good it melts in your mouth.” It’s the highest accolade that can be awarded to meat and cooking it slowly leaves it ridiculously soft without a quarrel. This recipe is a beautiful alternative to a traditional Easter Sunday roast lamb. It’s packed full of flavor for no more effort than usual; the dish takes just minutes to prep. It’s best served with fresh asparagus and peas, some pan-fried potatoes dressed in cumin, salt and butter, and yogurt with fresh mint and grated cucumber.
Indian-spiced Easter lamb Start to finish: 2 hours (30 minutes active) Servings: 6 1 tablespoon cumin seeds (or 1 1/4 tablespoons ground cumin) Two 2-inch cinnamon sticks (or 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon) 3/4 tablespoon kosher salt 2-inch chunk fresh ginger 6 cloves garlic 1 tablespoon garam masala 1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder
1 1/2 tablespoons canola oil 5-pound leg of lamb 2 cups boiling water 1 tablespoon cornstarch Heat the oven to 400 F. Line a large-baking dish with foil. Using a mortar and pestle or spice grinder, grind the cumin seeds and cinnamon until fine. In a food processor, combine the cumin-cinnamon mixture with the salt, ginger, garlic, garam masala, chili powder and canola oil. Blend until smooth. Use a paring knife to cut deep slits into the lamb on all sides. Spread the seasoning paste over the lamb, using your hands to get it into all the nooks and crannies, including the slits. Set the lamb into the prepared pan and roast for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, pour the water around the outside of the lamb, then cover tightly with foil. Reduce the heat to 325 F and bake for another hour. Remove the lamb from the pan, cover with foil and let rest for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, carefully pour the liquid in the pan into small saucepan. Simmer until reduced by half. Mix the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons cool water, then add to the simmering liquid. Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened. Slice the lamb and serve with the thickened pan jucies.

Easter is about Jesus’ resurrection Growing up, we never went to church. In fact, the only times I can remember going to church were for funerals and when my aunt took me when I stayed with her one summer. Dad gave use some good values for life and they were by example. He didn’t like liars or cheaters, and would PASTOR help someone in MICHAEL need, even if it meant ANTAL we did without. It was a nice time of the year. Mom made good things to eat that

we never got the rest of the year — nut rolls, poppy seed rolls, sweet cheese and a pastry that didn’t have a proper name. Aunts and uncles would come over play games and my favorite thing, eat. Mom always made extras and gave them to the milkman and mail carrier as gifts. We didn’t observe the special times of Easter, like Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Other than we didn’t put up the Christmas tree until the evening of Dec. 24th, Christmas Eve day was Mom’s baking day. The tree stayed up until Jan. 6th — Dad’s birthday — so I thought, but he would say it was the twelfth day of Christmas. This never seemed strange to me, because I didn’t know any difference. 60 years later, as I write this, even though we didn’t observe these days as Christian days of remembrance, Dad wasn’t far off. that there are some churches that don’t observe Ash Wednesday. A couple of years ago, my wife, some friends and I went for ice cream after Ash Wednesday service. Sitting there, we started to laugh. “I wonder if people think we forgot to wash.” “Not if they are Christian,” I said, but that may not be so. Some may say, “Ash Wednesday is not mentioned in the Bible. Why have it?” Well, neither are the names Easter, Christmas and Good Friday, to mention a few. Ash Wednesday is a time to confront our own mortality, to confess our sin before God, and to focus on the dual themes of sin and death in the light of God’s redeeming love in Jesus Christ. Holy Week is the time of prayer and meditation. Palm (Passion) Sunday is the remembrance of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem and the people waving palms saying, “Hosanna to the Son of
David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” [Mt.21:9] Maundy (Holy) Thursday is the observance of the last supper when Jesus offers bread (his body) and the cup (his blood) (Mt. 26:26-28), our Communion. On Good Friday, Jesus went to the cross and took upon himself the sins of the whole world. Luke 4:13 tells us that “the devil left him until an opportune time.” This day he thought he won. Easter morning, they found the stone had been removed from the entrance of the tomb. It was empty and Jesus was not there. They did not understand that Jesus had risen. Read John 20. Jesus defeated death so all might live if they believe in his death and resurrection. Everyone knows John 3:16, but verse 17 says, “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.”

One of the most significant walks in all of human history was Jesus’ journey on foot to Calvary, where he was crucified. Calvary or Golgotha was outside the walled city of Jerusalem in ancient Israel. Jesus’ route in Jerusalem is defined by tradition as the Via Dolorosa. The story of Christ’s journey is told four times in the New Testament. In Matthew 27:31–33 it is written: “After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him. As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. They came to a place called Golgotha (which means the The Place of the Skull).” In Mark 15:20–22; Luke 23:26–32 and John 19:16–18 the walk is similarly described. Luke mentions that the two thieves, who were crucified on either side of Jesus, were also in the group walking to Golgotha. In Matthew 16:24 it is written that Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.’” Last year was the third year in a row that the youth of St. John Lutheran Church in Kendallville have See CROSS WALK page B2

conducted a Cross Walk. Kendallville brothers Nick Hayden and Zach Hayden, both graduates of St. John Lutheran School, organize the annual event. On Good Friday, starting about 1 p.m. youth and adults gather to carry crosses on a route through Kendallville. “We tell the students that Jesus said to take up your cross and follow me and that we’re acting out this command in a sort of living parable,” Nick Hayden said. “We’re also being witnesses to Jesus as people see us carrying crosses. There’s not much talking during the walk. Afterward we discuss the event and focus a bit more on Good Friday and Easter.” Usually the route is from Hayden Honda, at the intersection of U.S. 6 West and S.R. 3, to St. John Lutheran Church on South Oak Street, but last year the youth organized two groups. One group started at Nick Hayden’s former house on Garden Street, near East Noble High School, and journeyed around Kendallville, returning to St. John.

This year the walk will be starting at 5 p.m. at Hayden Honda. They will go down U.S. 6 then up Main Street and on to St. John Lutheran Church. At about 6:30 p.m. they will be showing Passion of the Christ to the youth.

Living the Easter life Jesus Christ is risen! At Easter we celebrate and believe Jesus rose from the dead, and as a result we can now live the Easter life. What does it mean to live the Easter life? Several years ago, a television show came out that has since run its course called My Name is Earl. The show was about a man who won the lottery and as a REV. DR. result felt that fate, MARCUS J. or Karma, required CARLSON him to make up for St. Mark’s every bad thing that he had done in his Lutheran Church life. The show shared a variety of stories that affirmed this line of thinking. The basic gist of Karma is that if you do bad things, bad things will happen to you. If you do good things,

good things will happen to you. For those who embrace a Christian teaching, we know that Karma is not true, but if we are honest with ourselves, there are times when we embrace this line of thinking. When something bad happens we wonder why God is doing this bad thing to us, or why God is allowing it to happen. We wonder what we have done wrong. We feel and live in tremendous guilt when we sin and often look for ways to make up our failures, while living in our mistakes instead of grace. I am not suggesting we not have remorse for these things, what I am suggesting is that oftentimes we allow suffering and sin to have more power in our lives than grace. When we do so, we fail to live the Easter life. The resurrection is the story of new life. Christ died for our sins. We are saved and as we are reminded in the Bible, we have new life in Jesus Christ. This new life does not exempt us from

difficulties, but it does guarantee that our difficulties do not get the final word. Christ was victorious over death. When we live an Easter life, we recognize that God can and will make all things new. Whether is a major event or a minor issue, regardless of whether is a story of joy or suffering, God is redeeming all things. God wants to take every event, experience, and part of our lives and make them new creations. It can be tremendously difficult in a time of pain, grief or suffering to see the good; there is no denying that. One of the greatest tools we have in healing from these situations comes when we are able to look for the good that God is, has and wants to do in the midst of the difficulty we are facing. Everyone faces difficulty, but those who live in the hope and promise of the resurrection are able to find not only healing, but also new life. To say that God redeems all things recognizes that through the resurrection, God has
promised to take all things, the good, the bad and the ugly, and make them new. To live the Easter life is to look for the ways God might be redeeming every circumstance, experience and relationships. To live the Easter life is to believe that even in the midst of sin, suffering, grief and pain, God can write a new, better and more powerful story that not only brings healing and hope, but a new life as well. God can, will and desires to make all things new so we might experience healing and live in hope. Easter living is trusting that God is going to do amazing things in our lives even when things seem dark and hopeless. After all, that is the story of Easter when after the darkest hours of the history of the world, the greatest story of redemption and love broke forth into the world. Its the reason we celebrate Easter Its the reason that we can be an Easter people filled with hope.

Easter is where you will find what you’re searching for In 1991 Rob Hall and Gary Bell founded an adventure company called Adventure Consultants. For a hefty fee, Rob and Gary would lead groups of adventure seekers trekking and climbing at various sites. One such site was Mount Everest. In May of 1996 Rob Hall trained and led a group of adventure seekers MINISTER up the slopes to the BRIAN M. world’s highest peak. WALTER On their descent the South Milford group was caught in a blizzard and 12 people Church of Christ including Rob Hall lost their lives to the deadly mountain. Up to that point Hall had successfully helped 39 people summit Everest…not an easy task. Experienced mountain climbers know that when climbing at high altitudes there is what is referred to as a “death zone” once you surpass the elevation of 8,000 meters. The peak on Everest is 8,848 meters…so, the goal for a climber on Everest is to get up and down the final 848 meters as quickly as possible because during that time they are literally slowly dying. Every year dozens and dozens of people attempt to summit Everest. Many succeed, many do not make it to the top and have to turn around, and still some lose their lives and the slopes of Everest become their burial site. Why? Why would anyone willingly put their lives at risk by choice? It doesn’t seem to make any sense. In the 2015 film, Everest (based on Rob Hall’s deadly 1996 expedition) the adventure seekers are at base camp discussing their upcoming morning attempt to summit the mountain. They begin discussing with one another their reasons for taking the risk. One man says that his life is heavy and depressing and when he’s out climbing he can shed the

load, forget about life, and feel happy. A few others simply want to prove to themselves and others that they are worthy. They are all searching for some kind of release. It’s been said that “we all have to find some way to save ourselves in this world”. It seems that each year this is what the 1,000’s of adventure seekers that attempt crazy feats like Everest and other deadly ventures are up too…trying to find peace…trying to save themselves. There are so many people around us every day who are searching for peace, fulfillment, some sense of worthiness, and freedom. I truly believe the answer isn’t found anywhere other than in the gospel. Easter is a proclamation of the Good News. That Jesus Christ was born of a virgin, that He lived a sinless life, that He died on the cross as a sacrifice for the world, that He is risen, and that in grace He offers each of us salvation! He offers us something freely that we could never find on this earth for a any sum of money. In Christ’s death and resurrection He offers to all people true freedom. Freedom from the slavery of the curse of sin. Freedom to stop searching in places for peace that will never provide it. Easter says we can go from death to life… we can remove the heavy yoke of self, sin, and death. We can put on the yoke of Jesus; it’s light and brings with it mercy, peace, life, and joy. The Good News proclaimed at Easter says you can stop searching for things to being you peace…you don’t need to save yourself. Jesus has done all that needs to be done to save and liberate all who would call on his name, repent, and surrender to His authority. It’s ironic, the very things people chase after that supposedly bring happiness, life, and fulfillment are the same things that destroy them…the same things that leave them a burned up and empty versions of what they once were. EASTER: The End Result If you believed every ad for a new movie, you’d think that each one was the greatest flick of all time! You know it isn’t so. How many “super-hyped� films have left you wondering why you spent the money or invested the time? The end result isn’t what you thought it REV. JAMES would be. That’s pretty true ELSNER about many things in Price of Peace life, isn’t it? On the Lutheran Chruch surface – reading the packaging – a product looks like it’ll do the job. Only later do you learn it wasn’t a good purchase. At the start, a friendship or a job seems promising. But as time goes along, the “warts and freckles� that emerge have you wondering why you stay in that relationship. The end result isn’t what
•
you thought it would be. And that’s also true about the life of Jesus, something that’s been a focus for many churches throughout the holy season of Lent. Week by week, for six weeks, those churches focus on the Passion and suffering of Jesus Christ. They help folks retrace the steps of Jesus. From the intimate Seder meal with His disciples to His agonizing prayer in the garden that He might not have to taste death. Then, His betrayal, and arrest, and His condemnation by the Jewish leaders. All this followed by His trial before the Roman governor, His condemnation to execution, and the flogging, mockery, and abuse by the soldiers. Public execution – nailed to a cross - was the culmination for Jesus.

That sure wasn’t the end result that Jesus’ disciples hoped for. Some of them thought He would kick out the Romans from Palestine and restore Jewish self-governance. Some thought He would be their “bread king� and miraculously, daily provide them with the food they needed – without having to work for it. But everyone anticipated that Jesus would be around for a while. Things were only getting started! But the cross? And execution? And death? That sure wasn’t the end result they thought it would be! Frankly, I’m glad this didn’t end there - like everyone thought it did. You see, if Jesus only died on the cross, Christians would have their faith in a
dead man - a martyr for a cause. Then, Christianity wouldn’t be any different than Buddhism, Judaism, or Islam. All of the founders of those religions are still in the grave! Worse than that, the Apostle Paul wrote to the Christians in the city of Corinth: “And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.� A dead Jesus isn’t much good to anyone – not to me; not to you. Oh, He had great things to say – some insightful moral teachings, some great parables to illustrate His message, some wise sayings that showed great understanding. But so do most of the philosophers of the ancient world. Faith in a dead Jesus would be just that: dead faith. Faith that trusts in a powerless prophet. Is that what you want from faith? Joyful and blessed time of year He has risen! What a joyful and blessed time of the year this is! A time to gather with family and friends, to celebrate the coming of spring, to hunt for prizes all around the house, and most importantly of all, to remember why we fellow Christians follow God. When we really stop and look at the message that Jesus Christ gave us, PASTORS we should see that ERIK & this time of the year is JOANNA more important than SMITH any. It seems odd to me Shipshewana United that we usually make Methodist Church Christmas the more cheery time of the year when really, that was just the beginning. The most important part of Jesus being here on Earth was to sacrifice Himself for us and then, to overcome it! It is with this sacrifice that we have hope to

continue on each day. I know personally that Easter was always a time of fellowship with family and church members for me. In fact, before my eldest brother passed away in 2012, the last family picture I had with him was on Easter. Every day when I go and work in my office, I look at that picture and remember the love and wisdom that he shared with me on earth. And this is another part of Easter, the hope of heaven. I know that many times we wonder how we can find joy in times of fear, anger, worry, sorrow, and even death. How can we stay positive when our loved ones pass, and the world seems to be falling apart? What I remind myself is the scripture from 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 which says, “Be joyful always, pray at all time, be thankful in all circumstances. This is what God wants from you in your life in union with Christ Jesus.” This is the most important thing to remember about Easter. Whether you are going through struggle now or will in the future, remember to be joyful about it. Now this does not mean you have to smile and be
“happy”. Happiness is a superficial emotion that we feel for a moment, but joy is deeper. It is a spiritual discipline and a choice we make every day. Just as I mentioned above, every day I see the face of my brother that is passed away, and every day I have a choice. Will I remember the pain of his death, or the fact that because he believed in Jesus Christ as his Savior, that my brother is worshiping right now in heaven? You see fellow believers, we need to find the joy in life. We need to see the blessings that God has given us, and continually look for them. It doesn’t mean that we act happy all the time or avoid suffering, in fact scripture tells us there is “a time for laughter and a time for crying”. But emotion does not determine our focus on life. We must always find a reason to be joyful, and Easter gives us a reason. No matter what is happening in your life right now, whether you are suffering physically with pain or sickness, or with mental suffering or confusion, maybe even emotional or spiritual suffering and don’t feel like life is working at all, know this. You
have one reason to be joyful. And this is that Jesus Christ died for YOU! He gave His life for each person on earth. He did it so we have the access to His amazing grace. With this grace we stand on the strong foundation of being saved. When we believe and choose the path of Jesus Christ, we always have the hope of eternal life. And that is the reason to be joyful! Know that no matter what, as long as you have Jesus in your life, you will have an eternity of peace with God. This, fellow Christians, is what keeps me going every day. Many time I have wondered why I am here on earth, and there have been days when I did not want to live or keep going anymore, but what changed my mind was the love and grace that God gives. I challenge all of you reading this to change the way you see Easter. Don’t just think of this as a time for eggs, chocolate, and that weird bunny. But look at the real reason for Easter, hope. And not a blind hope, but a hope placed on the actions, words, and love of Jesus Christ our Savior. - Pastor Erik Smith

Mastering the sweet-and-spicy glaze for an Easter spiral ham BY ELIZABETH KARMEL ASSOCIATED PRESS
At Easter, there is just nothing better than a spiral-cut ham! Because I grew up with my grandmother roasting fresh, white, uncured hams, a sweet-glazed spiral-cut ham has always been a delicacy to me. My best friend’s mother bought one every Easter and to me it was heavenly. I loved the crunchy sweet and spicy crust on the ends of the slices. She served the ham cold and kept the leftover ham loosely covered with foil in the refrigerator. It didn’t last long as we — and the rest of the neighborhood kids — kept opening the fridge and pulling off a snack. Because it was spiral cut, you didn’t need a knife to snag a piece. All you needed to do was reach in and grab a thick, meaty slice. The first Easter I hosted the meal, I ordered a sweet-glazed spiral-cut ham. I felt so grown up and we ate that ham for days. I discovered the joy of a ham sandwich with thick-cut baked ham, crisp lettuce and lots of mayo on toasted white bread. As time went on, I grew to appreciate the purity of my grandmother’s fresh ham,
but soon found that most people expect their holiday hams to be pink. So why not give the people what they want? The best part is that it is so easy to customize the ham with your own glaze. My “hack” is to make a sweet and spicy dry rub that bakes into a burnished “glaze” (rather than brushing the meat with a wet sauce). It is so quick and easy that I urge you to throw away any packet of sauce that comes with your ham and try it my way. A dry glaze is a dry spice rub with both sugar and granulated honey (or honey powder) to add sweetness and flavor. You also could use maple sugar granules. Luckily, these powders are easier and easier to find at the grocer or online. My favorite sweet and spicy rub is a combination of cinnamon, allspice, cloves, white pepper, dried honey, salt and sugar. But feel free to riff with your favorite flavors. Just don’t omit the sugar; it melts and holds the other spices together, creating the glaze.
Sweet-and-spicy glazed ham Spiral-cut hams are fully cooked
when you purchase them and just need reheating. This is your chance to add tons of flavor in the form of a glaze. This recipe is written for a 5-pound ham, but the recipe is easily adapted to accommodate whatever size you need to feed your Easter crowd. For timing, plan 12 to 15 minutes per pound at 275 F. If you decide to cook a larger ham, you’ll also need to increase the dry glaze (seasoning mixture). The ham can be cooked either in the oven or on the grill. For the grill, prepare a grill for low heat, indirect cooking. For a charcoal grill, this means banking the hot coals to one side of the grill and cooking on the other side. For a gas grill, this means turning off one or more burners to create a cooler side, then cooking on that side. One advantage of the grill is that you can add a handful of wet wood chips before heating the ham. I like to do this because the wood adds a fresh layer of smoke to the ham and gives the ham a just-smoked flavor. Start to finish: 1 1/2 hours (15 minutes active) Servings: 12
5-pound pre-cooked spiral cut ham 1/2 cup honey powder or maple sugar granules 1/4 cup sugar 2 teaspoons cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice 1/2 teaspoon ground white pepper Heat the oven to 275 F. (For grilling directions, see the headnote above.) Use paper towels to pat dry the ham, then set it, cut side down, in a shallow baking pan. Set aside. In a blender or food processor, combine the remaining ingredients and process until the ingredients are reduced to a fine powder. Gently pry apart the tops of the spiral cuts. Sprinkle about 1/3 of the seasoning mixture over the ham and push it down between the slices. Cover loosely with foil. Set the ham on the oven’s middle shelf or on the cooler side of the grill. What Easter is all about Our lives today are more busy than ever before. Many different circumstances cause us to make decisions that may, forever, change our lives. One decision I made years ago was to surrender my life to Jesus and give Him control of my life. PASTOR MIKE Jesus surrendered His ALBAUGH life for each of us so that we might have Destiny Family an abundant life with of Faith Him forever. It cost Him everything so we could be reconnected to the Father’s love. In scripture, we are told God is love and He so loved the world that He sent His one and only Son that who so ever would believe in Him would not perish but have everlasting life. More importantly than His death, He was buried and the third day, by the Holy Spirit

power, He rose again from the dead. Our God is alive and sits at the right hand of the Father as our full price we owed for our sin. All of us have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, needing a savior. (Rom. 3:23) Scripture also tells us that the wages of sin is death.(Rom. 6:23) All of us deserved to die and be separated from God the Father for ever. But God demonstrated His own love for us, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Rom.5:8) There was absolutely nothing we could do on our own that would be good enough to satisfy God’s standard of righteousness. (Eph. 2:8-9) proves this in saying: For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and not from yourselves, it is a gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast. We know that taking credit for something only God can do, is not going to work out for us in a good way. Jesus shed his blood on the cross for you and me and it paved the way for us to have restoration spiritually with God the Father and life everlasting in
Heaven with Him. So many churches and beliefs have different ideas on what it takes to be a child of God. But only one thing matters and that’s what God says it takes. In (Rom.10:9-10) it plainly tells us the way to the Father. That if you confess with your mouth “Jesus is Lord” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Simple words of truth to tell us what Easter is all about. Our churches will be full Sunday as we celebrate what our Savior has accomplished on the cross for us. We pray you will clear your busy schedule and spend some time with God the Father and Jesus the Son of God and the Holy Spirit that raised Him from the dead Easter Sunday. Jesus truly is the way, the truth and the life for all who would call upon His name as Savior. GOD BLESS

Jesus knocked on doors Jesus knocked on a lot of doors during His time on Earth. He knocked on the door of the teachings of Moses, on the door of Jerusalem, on the door of a Gardener, on the door of a PASTOR Prodigal, on CHRISTINE the door of Mt. Pleasant friends, on the door of an United Methodist Upper Room, and even on the door of Hell, before He opens the door to Heaven. None of these doors had a knob for Him to turn so He could enter of His own free will. The person, or persons on the other side of the door had to open the door, and Jesus, being a gentleman waited to be

It makes all the difference for living within your family, with spouse, children, and parents; for living healthy lives. And it especially makes all the difference for where you spend eternity! Faith in Jesus is not futile – it’s not a waste of time and effort. By trusting and relying on Him – and especially
on what He’s done for you – there is confidence and hope about “what happens next.” By rising from death to life, Jesus has provided a victory over all the darkness and trouble of this world for everyone who places their faith and trust in Him. As you browse this newspaper circular, you might be tempted to think that all these churches are just out to get you on a membership list, to get your contributions, or to get you to help on some pet project of theirs. But it’s not what you think it is! The time and effort to invite you to hear the Easter Story and to know what Jesus has done is all about faith. About your faith.
