Dachshund Dash returns to Hoagland Days June 21 By Garth Snow

As the New Haven Kiwanis talk business over lunch, four topics become one: Canal Days, barbecue sandwiches, college scholarships, future leaders. City Councilman and former Mayor Terry Werling adds another dimension — the awareness that motivates other students who are not among the fortunate recipients. “The background of the scholarships is to encourage the students to do better and go forward in college, he said after a sandwich and coffee in the meeting room above Rack & Helen’s. “With that in mind, it gets more of the students interested. But most years we have a whole lot more applicants than we do scholarships. That will be the case again this year. Werling, Mayor Terry McDonald and Jeff Showman will weigh 14 applications before awarding four

Spring Fling on the farm to beneďŹ t local charities

Bekah Bradley will sing at “a really cool event in a cool location, an old barn out in the middle of nowhere. She shares the billing with Terry Lee and the Rockaboogie Band at the Spring Fling charity event, taking the stage at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at Bennett’s Auction & Party Barn, 17125 Killian Road, Harlan. The New Haven recording artist will be fresh off a few hours’ rest after the seven-day, seven-stop Band of Women Tour. “I’m going to perform some old and new country songs and some originals from my album, she said. She recorded the self-titled “Bekah Bradley at Sweetwater Sound in Fort Wayne. It’s available at bekahbradley.com and

other sites. “I’ve worked with [promoter] Dennis [Bennett] for a while, and I did the show last year,â€? she said. “I love doing fun gigs like that. You do so many bigger gigs, and you like all of them, but you like the smaller ones too.â€? Bradley, who moved to New Haven from Ohio in December, said the bus trip from Lima to Louisville and back through Botkins, Ohio, is “one of my busy weeks.â€? Bradley was a state winner and ďŹ nished ďŹ fth in the nation in the Texaco Country Roundup. “She’s a great entertainer, and just needs a break,â€? said Bennett, who is promoting the Harlan event and owns the farm where it will be held. Bennett described Terry Lee and the Rockaboogie Band as “a full band, with a fantastic sound.â€? The celebration opens at

Every dog has its day, and wiener dogs will have theirs Saturday afternoon at Hoagland Days. The festival runs Thursday through Saturday, July 19-21. Dachshund owners may bring their four-legged friends to Harlan Community Park at 4 p.m. to share in the newest event in Hoagland’s annual celebration. The Dachshund Dash is very popular, said Annie Counterman, a festival co-chairwoman. Dog owners may sign up by calling 820-3435, or by emailing klperry567@ yahoo.com. The kiddie tractor pull also will return this year, after taking a break in 2013. That event also will be held Saturday afternoon. Counterman and co-chairwoman Sally Holle said a ďŹ nal events schedule, an entertainment bill, and the selection of the parade grand marshal

will be posted on the Hoagland Area Advancement Association’s website, hoaglandin.com. Or visit Hoagland Days Fair on Facebook. Candidates for queen, prince and princess will be introduced on opening night. New this year is the royal queen contest, for senior ladies from Hoagland. Winners in all categories will be decided by the number of rafe tickets they sell. The HAAA will offer a ďŹ sh and tenderloin dinner Friday night. The prince and princess will be crowned that evening, and the demolition derby will begin. Saturday features the parade, silent auction, talent show, wine tasting, the HAAA’s barbecue chicken dinner and another night of the demolition derby. The festival ends with the crowning of the queen and royal queen, merchants drawings and See DASH, Page A4
