Girl Scouts extend cookie sales

Area Girl Scouts are making a final push toward their goals in the 98th annual cookie drive.

Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana will be out in force through Sunday, as part of National Girl Scout Cookies Weekend.

Scouts will set up tables in the lobbies of stores throughout Fort Wayne and New Haven. Shoppers can find sale locations and hours by visiting the Cookie Locator link at girlscoutsnorthernindiana-michiana.org. Girls also will sell cookies from door to door and through the Digital Cookie sales platform.

Grant Isenbarger will fulfill a longtime dream when he takes the ice for the 18th Winter Deaflympics, beginning March 28 in Russia.

The Snider High School graduate was selected to the roster after the American Hearing Impaired Hockey Association team tryouts in Buffalo, N.Y. Standing 6-2 and weighing 180 pounds, Isenbarger is one of 10 forwards on the 17-man squad.

The son of Ken and Linda Isenbarger said he set his sights on the Deaflympics goal when he attended his first AHIHA camp at the age of 8.

Isenbarger grew up playing with the Fort Wayne Youth Hockey Association, travel hockey, and the Fort Wayne Federals junior hockey team. The four-year

Movement is message in winter guard shows Young people in colorful costumes twirl flags, toss rifles and share insights through dance and music as the 2015 winter guard season continues.

Most squads will compete Saturday, Feb. 28, at Carroll High School. Teams will compete from 10 a.m. until 8:27 p.m. General admission is $6. Children under 5 are admitted for $3. Infants not needing seats will be admitted free.

The Snider High School winter guard will be the first local squad to perform, at 10:08 a.m. Trinity Meadows is in her first year as winter guard director at Snider.

“Our show is called ‘Will You Still?’ ” she said. The show examines whether love will survive through the years. “It’s more of an emotional show,” Meadows said. “We’re not smiling that much in the show. We are

kind of expressing our feelings more. We’re not crying, but we’re wanting to know the answer.”

“We have nine members this year and six are new,” Meadows said. “They’re used to marching band but they’re not used to winter guard. And I just love how they’re excited for the future. They’re really, really capable of getting better.

We have a lot of work to do, but I just love how we all come together for the same purpose, and that’s to work as a group.”

Allen County 4-H plans archery class Allen County 4-H Shooting Sports Club will host an archery class for youths in grades 5 to 12.

The first meeting will be 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, at the Allen County Extension Office, 4001 Crescent Ave., Fort Wayne. All other meetings will be 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays at the Allen County Fairgrounds, 2726 Carroll Road, Fort Wayne.

Those dates are April 11, 18 and 25, and May 2, 9 and 16.

The cost of the program is $40 per child, which includes state and county enrollment fees and the Archery Project fee. All equipment is provided.

Instructors are certified through the Indiana 4-H Shooting Sports Program of Purdue University and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

The class is limited to the first 30 participants who have registered and paid.

A minimum number is required to hold the class.

More than 20 show choirs from area high schools and middle schools will participate in the Carroll Classic Invitational, March 13 and 14 at Carroll High School.

Competition begins Friday evening, followed by long hours Saturday. Admission for Friday night only is $5. A pass for Saturday morning or afternoon is $10. A Saturday all-day pass is $15. The cost for the program and schedule is $5.

The variety of food available for purchase depends on the time of day, but lunch and dinner specials are planned.

The festival is hosted by Carroll High School’s Select Sound women’s show choir, Minstrel Magic mixed show choir, and by Maple Creek Middle School.

Middle school choirs performing Friday are Carroll, Kekionga, Shawnee, Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, Summit/Woodside, and Northwood.

It’s popular for the organizations in the area to get on the calendar at the Amer-

ican Legion. “So everybody knows who’s next, and it all works out.�

Bill Dinius, the post commander, said the tradition dates back to before the Legion moved from downtown to its new home in 1990. “They offered the facility to the organizations, the churches, and Boy Scouts, that didn’t have a facility large enough to put on the ďŹ sh fries,â€? he said. “And we’ve pretty much continued on with that through the years, and try to help the community and give back a little bit.â€? “And we provide whatever help we can,â€? he said. “Occasionally someone will offer to help with the frying of the ďŹ sh.â€? “Everybody does their ďŹ sh fry a little different,â€? said Dennis Boyer, the assistant scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 302, which sponsored the ďŹ rst ďŹ sh fry, on Feb. 20. “The American Legion just gives us a facility to do this, so we can decide our price and try to give a good quality of meal.â€? “We have baked potatoes and french fries and coleslaw or applesauce,â€? said Bev Swaim, whose daughter, Amy Packett, does the cooking for the American Legion Auxiliary. “And when the Auxiliary does it, we have hush puppies.â€?

Dinius said. “It’s just amazing how they’ll step up and volunteer.â€? “They have a lady down there, and if they wish it she makes the best coleslaw that I ever tasted,â€? Dinius said of Lynn Claybaugh. “And some people say the reason they come down to the ďŹ sh fry is because of their coleslaw.â€? “They reserve the reception hall to rent from us.

They will let us know what their needs are, so we’ll order the ďŹ sh for them, and then we have the plates and the silverware and napkins and tarter sauce,â€? Dinius said. “And whatever they use they keep track of it and pay for it.â€?

Boyer, of the Boy Scouts, said the troop draws from Huntington North High School, as well as Homestead, Norwell and North Side high schools. Boyer began helping with the ďŹ sh fries when his son, Logan, was in Cub Scouts, in the sixth grade. Logan is now a Boy Scout and a senior at Huntington North. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The American Legion has been really good about helping us,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kind of an annual event for the Roanoke Lions Club to have their ďŹ sh fry at the Legion,â&#x20AC;? Winters said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We provide manpower for cooking, kitchen prep during the event, as well as the serving and cleanup during and after. The Legion goes ahead and purchases the ďŹ sh and some of the other supplies that we will need. So it all works out.â&#x20AC;?

The ďŹ sh fry helps the Lions Club to support local projects, Winters said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We support the Northeast Indiana Honor Flight, which is right here at the American Legion. We also strongly support the library. We help with the Roanoke BeautiďŹ cation Foundation, and then through the summer months we are part of the farmersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; market,â&#x20AC;? he said.

When Post 160 is not hosting a public dinner, Legion members still will ďŹ nd some good food at the Legion, Dinius said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re down there Wednesdays, odds are Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m going to be there cooking wings,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have a couple people on Thursdays who cook some really killer sliders.â&#x20AC;?

Many Legion members cook Mexican food, or chili, to serve to Legion members. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You name it, they make it,â&#x20AC;? Dinius said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take any money. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s their way to give back to the post.â&#x20AC;?

(My selection) wasn’t as surprising as my first selection two years ago for the World Deaf Championships, but it still gets my blood going. It was my goal to become part of this team since I was a kid. Obviously my biggest goal is to come back home with a gold medal. I’d like to do well as an individual, but the main and most important goal is to win gold. I do want to thank my parents for always being supportive and getting me into where I am in life. I also would like to thank the American Hearing Impaired Hockey Team for giving me an opportunity to do this and everything they’ve done in the past. Four Fort Wayne players have earned the honor during its 12-year history.

Isenbarger now attends IPFW, where he is a member of the ACHA Division 3 hockey team.

The 18th Winter Deaflympics will be held March 28 to April 5 in Khanty-Mansyisk, Russia. The competition will include teams from Canada, Finland, Russia, Kazakhstan and the United States.

Isenbarger is no stranger to international competition, having competed in the 2013 World Deaf Hockey Championships in Vantaa, Finland.

Twelve states are represented on the 2015 squad.

Isenbarger is the only player from Indiana.

“This is a young but talented group of players that have worked hard to be selected to the team,” said Jeff Sauer, the U.S. team’s head coach. “All are presently playing on teams to include

high school, junior and college. The team is very committed to performing well in Russia. A solid core of experience is present and the key will be how quickly the players gel and gain the chemistry to be successful. The motto ‘Whatever it Takes’ has been the focus to this point. I expect this attitude to be present in our locker room in Russia.”

WinterFest enters final weekend WinterFest 2015 continues this weekend at the Edwin Clark Schouweiler Memorial Planetarium at the University of Saint Francis.

New for this year is a three-color, full-dome laser system and two specialty shows that combine narration, music and laser projection to inform and entertain. “Black History Laser Tribute” highlights important events, ideas and people using familiar music and laser animation.

“Black History Tribute” will be offered again Sunday at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 1.

“Lasers in Space” presents concepts of astronomy, physics and space with music and lasers for a whimsical and informative experience for family audiences. “Lasers in Space” will be offered at 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday evening shows are at 6, 7, 8 and 9 p.m. and will combine laser lights with music by Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles and others. All seats for evening shows are $6.

The Saturday afternoon show and Sunday shows are Family Friendly shows,

suitable for children along with accompanying adults.

Family Friendly show tickets Saturday afternoon and Sunday are $6 for adults, $3 for children under 18, with a maximum of $18 per family (two adults and dependent children under 18).

Ticket sales begin 45 minutes prior to the first show of the day. Planetarium seating is limited.

Concordia High School graduates Clinton Bienz, Ellen Moussou and Tyler Muehl will perform with the Concordia University concert choir on its 10-day Midwest tour.

Tyler Muehl graduated from Concordia Lutheran High School in 2013. His father, Mark Muehl, serves as executive director of the Lutheran Schools Partnership, an organization that supports 17 area Lutheran elementary schools and Concordia Lutheran High School.

Mueller, the former Holy Cross music director, graduated from Concordia University Chicago. Patricia Cotton, the current director of music and worship, earned her masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in music and worship at that school. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She went on tour to Europe with them and she even directed

them though she was a student. She absolutely loved it,â&#x20AC;? Mueller said.

Mueller said many of the Holy Cross teachers graduated from that university, situated in west suburban River Forest, Ill. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That they are affiliated with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod is very attractive to Lutheran churches in our area,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Charles P. Brown, the director of choral activities at Concordia University Chicago, is conducting Kapelle for the 14th year. In a news release, the university said the program to be presented during the spring tour will include a variety of pieces chosen for wide audience appeal. The program is entitled â&#x20AC;&#x153;I Can Tell the World,â&#x20AC;? and includes works by Vincent Persichetti, Paul Manz, Rihards Dubra, Paul Bouman, Virgil Thompson, Moses Hogan and Stacey V. Gibbs.

In addition to its annual tours in the U.S., Kapelle conducts an

international tour every four years. Kapelle has performed in Finland, France, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Chile and Argentina, and else-

where in Europe and South America.

Kapelle includes music majors and students focused on other disciplines. Members are

selected by audition.

The ensemble has produced 11 recordings of sacred music.

Children’s Zoo plans yearlong 50th birthday party The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo turns 50 years old in 2015, and the community is invited to be part of the celebration.

“The zoo was built by this community, starting with the schoolchildren who donated pennies to build Monkey Island back in 1965,” said Zoo Director Jim Anderson.

“Since then, thousands of families and businesses have donated funds to create everything you see at the zoo.” More than 20 million people have visited the zoo since it opened on July 3, 1965, and more than $32 million has been donated for capital projects.

“The zoo’s 50th birthday celebration is our way of thanking the community for five decades of outstanding support,” Anderson said.

Hotel Fitness golf event calls for 500 volunteers Hotel Fitness Championship organizers have begun recruiting 500 volunteers for the 2015 golf showcase.

The tournament, hosted by the Western Golf Association, is seeking volunteers to serve on a variety of committees from Sept. 7-13 at Sycamore Hills Golf Club. Committees will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

“Volunteering is an exciting way for people in the community to get involved in the behindthe-scenes action of the Championship,” said tournament director Chris Montagano, on behalf of the WGA. “Volunteers are an integral part of tournament week, and we truly appreciate all they do to help make the Championship a success each year.

It’s wonderful to see the people of Fort Wayne get behind the event and serve as chairpersons and volunteers. With committees ranging from marshals to communications, volunteer opportunities provide for an unforgettable experi-

ence for both golfers and non-golfers alike. We had an unbelievable group of volunteers last year, and we look forward to this year’s turn out being even better.”

Volunteer schedules will be specific to the committee to which the volunteer is assigned. Some committees will begin working Monday, while others start Thursday of Championship Week. All volunteers are asked to work a minimum of three shifts spanning approximately 15-20 hours.

Victory Noll to examine peace, social justice Victory Noll Center plans separate programs highlighting women’s roles in the peace process and issues of prison reform.

Victory Noll Center is at 1900 W. Park Drive in Huntington.

The five-part series “Women of Peace” will run from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on five Saturdays from March to August, with no meeting in

June. Dates are March 14, April 11, May 9, July 11 and Aug. 8.

There is no cost for the program, but there will be a freewill offering, and registration is required.

Refreshments will be provided each session.

The program will use as a resource “Women, War & Peace,” a PBS mini-series that places women at the

center of an urgent dialogue about conflict and security and reframes the understanding of women’s role in the peacemaking process.

Victory Noll will present “JustMatters: Prison Reform,” a module from the JustFaith Ministries.

The nine-date series will meet from 6:30 to 9 p.m. one Wednesday each month from March 25 to Nov. 11.

The program will provide a working understanding of the journey of those who are incarcerated and the quest for restorative justice.

Meeting dates are: March 25, April 22, May 20, June 24, July 22, Aug. 19, Sept. 23, Oct. 21 and Nov. 11. The cost is $90 and includes refreshments.

Bowlers roll Strikes for Charity

More than a hundred bowlers representing 22 teams took to the Georgetown Bowl lanes Saturday for the first Strikes for Charity.

The 105 bowlers paid $15 each to support Reflections of Caring, the charitable outreach of Fire Police City County Federal Credit Union. Each Strikes for Charity bowler’s

registration included three games of bowling, shoe rental and a door prize ticket.

Last year, Reflections of Caring gave almost $14,000 to almost 50 local charities, said Melissa Miller, the nonprofit credit union’s business development director.

“We are involved with numerous community fundraising events throughout the year,” Miller said. “Last year

we donated 800 volunteer service hours to various local charities and their fundraising efforts.”

“We like to focus on local charities,” Miller said.

Miller said the We Care loan event in April will raise more money for charity. “For everyone who finances a vehicle with us, we give $25 to the charity of their choice,” she said. “Some charities, like Cancer Services of

Northeast Indiana, for instance, might receive $300 because people have selected them to receive those funds.”

The credit union also offers a $1,000 scholarship each year for a college student, and a $1,000 college scholarship for a graduating senior. Each scholarship winner must be a credit union member.

The committee charged with planning the 2015 Leo-Cedarville Freedom Festival is welcoming sponsors and volunteers for the celebration. Riverside Gardens will be home to the celebration Friday and Saturday, July 3 and 4.

The weekend begins with the Up the Creek Cruise In and the free Freedom Concert from 5-9 p.m. Friday. Donations will benefit Northeast Allen County Fire and EMS. Saturday’s activities begin with the 5K run.

Watch for updates at leocedarville.com, where entry forms will be available May 1. Sponsors expect over 250 runners.

The Freedom Festival will start at 2 p.m.

Saturday. Joe Justice and other local musicians will entertain all day. New this year is the Freedom Corn Hole Tournament. The Freedom Fireworks will light the sky at dusk.

To fund the free entertainment, the committee is seeking donations of any

size. A gift of $500 would put the sponsor’s company logo on the race T-shirts.

Other sponsorships would allow donors to show their company banners and signs. A sponsor could promote children’s ride.

A church or other organization could sponsor an activities tent for kids.

“Our concerts are also free to the community, so additional funds need to be raised or sponsored,” the committee said in a news release. “The fireworks are costly, and the best part of our weekend.”

The committee is seeking volunteers to help with the 5k run, if only for an hour.

Riverside Gardens features a splash garden, play garden, volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, a play creek and walking trails.

Taste adds diverse foods

It’s just a Taste of Waynedale, but guests will need trays to hold their samples from at least 21 local restaurants and businesses.

So trays they will have, said Camille Garrison, the marketing director for the event’s sponsor, Kingston Residence of Fort Wayne.

“Who would have known when we started that it would grow so big?”

Garrison said. The Fort Wayne get-together and fundraiser has grown in both size and mission in its

seven years.

The Kingston event outgrew its own Winchester Road home in 2014. But Kingston residents get free rides to the more spacious Mount Calvary Family Life Center, 1819 Reservation Drive. Hours are 4:30-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 24.

Tickets at the door the day of the event will be $20.

Garrison said she is working with even more

Even the date is a slight change, because the customary third Tuesday would have fallen on Saint Patrick’s Day. “We weren’t going to be able to compete with green beer,” Garrison said.

Saint Louis Academy celebrates 100 years Michelle and Mike Castleman are members of Saint Louis Besancon Parish and have generations of ties to Saint Louis Academy.

Michelleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s father and grandfather, Michael Lomont and Allen Lomont, addended the school. Michaelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s grandmother, Eileen (Oberley) Castleman, attended Saint Louis Academy. Mike and Michelleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s six children have attended the school; their youngest is in the seventh grade. Michelle Castleman, a frequent contributor to Todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Catholic, wrote this history of the academy, and shared it with readers of Times Community Publications.

1915, at 9:30 a.m. that the dedication of their new school was held after a ďŹ re destroyed the former wooden structure called Saint Joseph School on the French settlement at Besancon.

According to records of the Besancon Historical Society, the original school was opened in the fall of 1900 with the Sisters of Saint Agnes in charge. The school was built along with a nunnery for approximately $4,000 after the Rev. F.X. Labonte purchased six acres of additional land on Sept. 1, 1897. burner stove from the ďŹ re that may have contributed to its cause. Although the temperature was zero and the ground was snow covered, the stove kept ďŹ re

for several hours outside the burning structure.

Classes did not cease after the ďŹ re, but the students were moved to the rectory while the pastor moved to the summer kitchen of a neighbor across the highway. Tables, boxes and sewing machines were used as desks.

A new school and

convent were immediately erected under the â&#x20AC;&#x153;untiring efforts and efďŹ cient workâ&#x20AC;? of the Rev. Michael P. Louen.

Historical accounts of the dedication event detail a â&#x20AC;&#x153;grand timeâ&#x20AC;? with Bishop Herman Joseph Alerding, countless clergy and hundreds of visitors from near and far attending as they traveled via the interurban. After a solemn high Mass at the church, the faithful along with the schoolchildren marched to the school which was â&#x20AC;&#x153;gaily decorated with a dozen American ďŹ&#x201A;agsâ&#x20AC;? for a blessing of the interior and exterior of the new building. Classes in the new school, which opened under the name Saint Louis Academy, began on Oct. 4, with three teachers from the Sisters of Notre Dame See SAINT, Page B4

SAINT from Page B3 (who had started at the old school Sept. 3, 1910) and 116 students. The fabulous new brick building boasted four large school rooms, a basement and auditorium “well arranged and solidly constructed.”

During the early years, students thrived in the Catholic setting of the family atmosphere. Various reports found in the archives itemized improvements made. In 1936, new cement floors were laid in the basement of the school and in 1937 the interior of the school was painted, the floors reconditioned and stokers were installed. New storm windows were placed in the school in 1946 when the School Sisters of Notre Dame were still in charge and taught eight grades in four classrooms to 137 pupils. During this era, the Rev. Joseph Hession served as the parish priest at Saint Louis and the hall held many activities.

Schoolchildren participated in school plays and skits.

Bingo nights were held and there was often a full house with people having to sit on the steps. Boxing tournaments and basketball

tournaments were also home to the gymnasium and the Catholic Youth Organization hosted dances for members from other parishes. At this time, it was noted that no Catholic child in Jefferson Township had attended a public school in the past decade — “a unique proof of the cooperation and Catholicity of the parishioners of Saint Louis Church.” World War II caused some conditions to change briefly as fewer families in the parish were making their living by farming, but reports described that gradually returning to normal.

The Sisters of Notre Dame continued to serve the children of SLA for a total of 67 years until June 1977. A kindergarten program was started in 1979.

During the early 1980s, when conservation of energy was a concern, one third of the cafeteria was transformed into a chapel for daily Mass during the winter months. The large windows were removed, thermopane windows were installed and the front doors of the school were replaced. In 1983, the school had 69 students in

kindergarten through eighth grade. Ten years later, in 1993, an updated history of the school reported 73 students enrolled in preschool through grade six, with five classrooms, and the school maintained a first-class accreditation. In 1996, students totaled 65.

A very active school board and home and school association continued the strong tradition of parents playing a crucial role in the school’s vitality. At the time, the

parish property consisted of the school, church, rectory, parish office building, two cemeteries, athletic field, large playground and a parish hall, all nestled on approximately 13 acres between the corn fields of rural Jefferson Township.

Several remarkable sisters and lay principals have served SLA over the last century. Most special in the memory of the current parishioners is Mrs. Agnes Hart, whose music and

energy filled the halls from 1987-2004. Mrs. Cheryl Layton-Whitaker and Mrs. Carolyn Kirkendall also provided leadership in the new millennium. Presently, Mrs. Cheryl Klinker is principal. She has been at the helm since 2011. Under her exceptional direction, the school has significantly increased enrollment and continued to grow and flourish. With her expertise and director background for the learning disabled, SLA became a pilot school for special needs students in the diocese in 2012.

Today, the school houses interactive boards and technology in every classroom and 102 students in preschool through eighth grade with seven fulltime and three part-time teachers. Most recent improvements include remodeling the former art room into a resource room, replacing the original slate roof with a new one of steel tile, and adding a larger, covered back porch and new windows and doors around the turn of the century. Efforts to remodel the former convent/parish office to include space for a science lab, art and music classes are also in the

works.

In her January newsletter to alumni, Klinker wrote, “Saint Louis Academy has stood the test of time.

Our physical building may have been updated and our educational practices modernized, but it is the community pride in Saint Louis Academy that sustains the Catholic mission it was destined for.” For nearly two decades, the current pastor at Saint Louis, the Rev. Stephen E. Colchin, has lovingly referred to SLA as the parish gem. The valued advocate added his gratitude to the parish and its families, “For 100 years, this parish and its families have supported SLA with their time, talent and treasure and made personal sacrifice to send their children to a Catholic school. We have much to be thankful for as the Lord has guided us over this past century and we pray this same guidance will sustain us well into the future.”

The celebration will culminate on Nov. 1, 2015, All Saints Day, with Mass celebrated by the Most Rev. Kevin C. Rhoades, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend.

Residents and visitors will see their friends and neighbors. “It’s a very social event in addition to the fact that it’s

doing great things for the community,” Garrison said.

Community Harvest Food Bank was the sole beneficiary of the first Taste of Waynedale, and has shared the proceeds with another Waynedale cause each succeeding year. This year the second charity extends beyond Waynedale and even Allen County. Garrison is on the board of that organization, Honor Flight Northeast Indiana. “I’m very passionate about that particular cause,” she said.

Honor Flight has added a fourth one-day, roundtrip flight this year. “We’re also discussing taking a larger plane so we can get even more veterans to Washington for the day

Garrison said she learned of Honor Flight from a Kingston sister community that was involved with Honor Flight in Toledo. “I fell in love with it, and it’s been a great experience,” she said.

“There are no salaries, there’s no overhead, there are no fancy cars. It’s a hundred percent volunteers — 22 board members who are volunteering their time to make things happen.”

“They were so full of emotion, and they were tearful,” Garrison said of the veterans. “It was just raw emotion and I was hooked.”

Walgreens provides disposable cameras, pays for the developing, and absorbs the cost of the veterans’ copies of the photos. “And this year they’re going to split the cost of the frames with us. So Walgreens is really stepping up and doing a great job for us,” Garrison said.

Though the Taste of Waynedale has a new home, it remains a Kingston event. “It was difficult for us to move away from having it here,” Garrison said. “We wanted people to come and see our beautiful community. It was a great way to showcase our building. But in the end, we just outgrew the property here.”

Local efforts boost foods project The Grabill-Leo agricultural project of Foods Resource Bank has completed 12 years of production.

Foods Resource Bank is a multidenominational charitable organization that engages U.S. farmers, churches and community groups whose fundraising efforts help poor farmers around the world to raise their own food. Overseas projects include irrigation, fertilization, improved seed varieties and animal husbandry. FRB works through partnering agencies in over 30 countries.

This past year, about 40 members of the community provided land, crop inputs, trucking, labor, machinery and cash to plant and harvest corn, soybeans and wheat.

Kittaka was inducted into the National Music Teachers Hall of Fame in 1999, a finalist for the Indiana Teacher of the Year Award in 1997, and received the Indiana Outstanding Elementary Teacher of the Year Award from the Indiana Music Educators Association in 1991. She is a recipient of the Fulbright Memorial Teachers Fund Grant and the Arts United Lifetime Achievement Award, among many other accolades.

Kittaka co-founded the Foundation for Art and Music in Education, a professional organization of art, music, dance, and drama educators that fosters and encourages an appreciation for the arts in elementary-age children throughout northern Indiana. She also co-founded the Cherry Blossom Festival in Fort Wayne. Kittaka has sung in operas with the IPFW Opera Workshop and as part of the chorus for the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and Chicago Symphony, in addition to being a soprano soloist for the Fort Wayne Philharmonic.

Tapestry is a day of inspiration and education for women, and also raises scholarship funds for those studying health sciences at IPFW.

Red Cross Month is dedicated to the everyday heroes who support the Red Cross mission by giving blood, volunteering their time, learning lifesaving skills or making a financial contribution.

Safe Sitter is a medically based instructional program that teaches girls and boys how to handle emergencies when caring for young children.

Classes include two days of instruction that incorporate lifesaving techniques, how and when to talk with a 9-1-1 dispatcher, injury prevention, behavior management, managing a toddler or preschool guest, tips on child care and how to screen baby-sitting jobs. The classes are taught by Lutheran Children’s Hospital staff and prepare babysitters to confidently handle crises. Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, and class size is limited. The cost for the two-day class is $50.
