The Huntertown Lions Club pitched in to help Boomerang Backpacks provide weekend meals for students at Huntertown Elementary School. They will pitch in again to fry fish at Huntertown Heritage Days. They’ve been helping the town all summer, for many summers, and they intend to keep pitching in for many years to come. More than 1,300 youngsters play baseball in the Lions’ leagues. Almost 500 play soccer; Bobby Ables coordinates that program. They crowd the fields six nights a week at the Lions’ field adjacent to Huntertown Elementary School. Ken Krauter, who recently handed off the club president’s gavel to Bob Fromme, said the club also supports the Burn Center at Saint Joseph Hospital, the Indiana School for the Blind, and other health initiatives. He said it’s all possible because of volunteers such

Mike Clendenen’s first goal in running is about as obsolete as his first pair of running shoes. “I’ve been running about nine years,” said the New Haven Parks superintendent. “When I first started out I did it to lower my cholesterol, and I went to a big-box store and bought a quote-unquote pair of running shoes for about $45, and I thought there was nothing to this.” His quest for more scientific footwear soon led him to Three Rivers Running Co., 4039 N. Clinton St. “I was familiar with the manager,” he said. “They fitted me with a pair of shoes and for the most part I’ve been running pain-free ever since.” Like hundreds of other athletes, Clendenen is chasing his own fitness goals toward the Fort4Fitness Fall Festival, Sept. 26 and 27 in downtown Fort Wayne.
