They recall less than a year ago, when the World War II veteran and retired Fort Wayne musician joined 70 other Fort Wayne area veterans on a ight to see the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. Meyer was Honor Flight Northeast Indiana president — a title that he still holds. Kindler was Stiles’ volunteer guardian for the day.

Honor Flight 12 will y April 30. Flight 13 will leave and return to Fort Wayne on May 28. With those ights, Meyer said, Honor Flight Northeast Indiana will have carried 880 World War II veterans to Washington. When Flight 14 takes off Oct. 1, it will carry some of the 200 Korean War veterans on Meyer’s waiting list.

About 47 percent of Allen County’s election precincts will vote in new locations on primary election day, May 6. Voting hours are 6 a.m.-6 p.m.

Early voting began April 8.

Elections Director Beth Dlug said the changes are intended to direct voters to the nearest possible voting places.

She said her ofďŹ ce offers help online and will notify voters by mail. If all else fails, voters may call (260) 449-7329. “We’re doing everything in our power to put the word out to check polling locations,â€? Dlug said.

Allen County maintains 115 polling places and 675 voting machines. More than 1,200 election-day workers help to serve more than 250,000 voters.

Kindler donated $400 for the privilege of being Stiles’ full-time guardian for the day. “It entails being glued to him for the day, and you don’t ever let him out of your sight,” she said. “You’re there to make sure they have a good time, that they’re taken care of.”

For Kindler, Stiles’ passing was a reminder of the urgency of taking World War II veterans to see the monuments.

Her father, Raymond Coe, was a Navy pilot in the Pacific in World War II — “and he saw a lot.”

“He died in 1989, and a few years after he died I was helping my mom with her checking account and paying bills and things like that, and I saw she was donating

money to build a World War II memorial,” Kindler said of her work with her mother, MaryJane, who now also is deceased.

“And I said ‘Mom, stop doing that. Why are you sending them money?’

And she said, ‘Because I want to help build this memorial.’ ” Kindler said her father would not have admitted that he wanted to visit such a memorial. “I think the war affected him. He never talked about it,” she said.

“I wish the memorial

had been there long ago, when my dad could have seen it, because they deserve it,” she said.

Kindler works with Honor Flight Roanoke.

The committee works from Roanoke American Legion Post 160, but is not part of the Legion.

Nor is the committee an official part of Honor Flight Northeast Indiana.

But the Huntington County community raises a lot of money for the wider cause.

“That’s a fabulous group that’s done an

unbelievable amount of financial support for us — $72,000 in four years,” Meyer said before yet another fundraiser, on April 12. “They’re a phenomenal group of people.”

That silent auction at the Legion was the third auction for the Roanoke committee, which will take a break from its traditional fall fundraiser because of competition from other festivals.

Meyer said other Fort Wayne businesses are planning fundraisers, with details to be announced.

Meyer is a veteran of 32 years with the Air National Guard in Fort Wayne. He retired in July 2002, with the rank of colonel.

He later heard about the Honor Flight from other veterans, and talked with then-President Laura Carrico. Then Tiffany Flemming became president. Then Meyer became president. He said his wife, Sandie, also works on the board. Max Robison is vice president.

“There are about three or four of us who work almost full time on it,” Meyer said.

Meyer has a Leesburg address. Most of the 16 leaders live in or near Fort Wayne.

Meyer said Honor Flight originated in Springfield, Ohio, in 2004, when a retired Air Force captain working in a VA hospital “was talking with some of the vets about the new memorial that took 60 years to build.” Those veterans had no way of visiting the capital, Meyer said, and so volunteers met the challenge. The first flight took 12 World War II veterans to the capital. As of Nov. 15, Honor Flights had carried 117,500 veterans to see the monuments. The

national office remains where the movement started, in Springfield, Ohio.

Meyer said northeast Indiana’s is the senior of Indiana’s three groups.

Honor Flight organizations also operate from Lafayette and Indianapolis.

The Fort Wayne committee will charter an AirBus 320 from US Airways Charter. The cost to transport 70 veterans, 70 guardians and eight trip and bus leaders is about $44,000 for the day.

Unlike most members of the volunteer Roanoke committee, Tom Meyers is a veteran. He served in Vietnam.

He said more World War II veterans keep applying for the Honor Flights, which eventually will accommodate other veterans. “This isn’t gonna stop with the Korean vets.

It’s going to go on to the Vietnam vets,” he said.

“I’ve got 165 Korean vets signed up to go, and probably 10 Vietnam vets signed up to go.”

“The Vietnam thing — I had reservations,” Meyers said. “I was gonna get off the board when it came time for that, because I just didn’t want to be part of it then. But after thinking about it, I want to be part of it because I want to see their welcome home.”

Drive nets 2,919 items Perry Hill Elementary fourth-graders Georgia Zannis and Lauren Sharp sparked a drive to gather and donate nonperishable items to a food bank.

The two teamed up with a fifth-grade reading class. Rebecca Knott’s students had just read about helping others. The group made daily announcements and set up a contest to see which grade level could bring in the most items.

The food collection used theme days such as Marvelous Macaroni Monday, Tiny Tots Tuesday, Wishy Washy

Wednesday and Tin Can Thursday to remind students to bring items to donate.

The students collected 2,919 items in four days. Representatives from Community Harvest Food Bank picked up the donations.

Although the fifth-graders won the contest by collecting 758 items, all students were declared winners as they helped out others who are less fortunate.

As their prize, the fifth-grade class chose to have popcorn while they read one week.

Meyers said veterans and guardians spend most of their time at the World War II Memorial, but also might see the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, or the Lincoln Memorial. Three tour buses will carry the group to Arlington National Cemetery, where they will watch the changing of the guard. They also will visit the Air Force Memorial, for a noon meal.

They also might visit the Women’s Military Memorial.

Ashley Black leads Roanoke’s effort to gather auction items. “I’m just not afraid to talk to anybody. The worst they can do is tell me no,” Black said. “All the businesses in Roanoke are

usually on board with it.

We don’t even have to ask sometimes.”

Black, too, has served as a guardian. “I went on a flight in 2011 with a gentleman from Huntington, and it was just the most memorable experience of my life,” she said. “It’s up there in the top five days of my life.”

Veterans will be greeted by people cheering and dancing. “They make it a huge party for them,” Black said.

“When you arrive, you have these men who are in a shell, and they don’t want to talk about their experience. But by the end of the day you see them open up and shed some of the baggage that they’ve carried for these years,” she said. “And when you

see them stand there at the World War II Memorial — and I’m getting choked up, because it’s so amazing — they see that they are appreciated, and you know they are the greatest generation.

“And by the time of the flight home, those men are talking and sharing stories, and it’s just like they’re kids again.”

“We make them feel as special as we possibly can,” she said.

Black estimated that 15 veterans from Huntington County have been part of the flights.

“We want to carry on the tradition and educate the future generations about how important past generations were,” Black said, “and why you’re here, and why you get to do what you do.”

“So after years of that patchwork, we have people going all over the place. So what we did last year is take all of our resources and reorganize the whole thing, so that we could get people to the closest locations that were possible.”

“People don’t like a change in their polling place, and we’re aware of that,” Dlug said. “But on the other hand, things change. People move and sometimes we have to move in order to keep up with that.”

“We did a pretty big, massive change of polling locations. We reorganized neighborhoods and precincts that are going to particular locations,” Dlug said. “So people definitely want to check.”

Even voters who move after the April 7 registration deadline may vote one last time at their old precinct.

Late in April, Dlug’s office will send a postcard and voting site information to every household that has a registered voter.

The elections website also contains sample ballots.

This year, voters face choices for township trustee, township board, some school board seats, and some town, county and state offices, judicial

positions, and U.S. representative. Voters will find links to local political party websites at the Allen County election website.

They will not, however, find opinion on candidates or parties.

“It’s very important to me. I can’t stress enough how we try to run a nonpartisan office,” Dlug said. “We’ll help everyone and anyone with all of their questions. That’s what we’re here for — an accurate, fair and unbiased office.”

The elections office also has moved since the last election, to 1 E. Main St., in the Rousseau Centre.

Dlug stepped into the elections position in early 2009. She had been a paralegal at the prosecutor’s office, she had worked on political campaigns and was interested in the election process, and she had directed information technology for the prosecutor’s office. Then the job became available. “It all kind of came together for me,” she said.

The mission, Dlug said, is “an equal and fair opportunity to vote.”

May ride honors veterans The Veterans’ Memorial Motorcycle Ride is scheduled for Sunday, May 4, beginning and ending in New Haven.

Registration begins at 11 a.m. at Ehlerding’s River City Harley-Davidson. A $10 donation will benefit the Schnelker Veterans’ Memorial Park. May 18 is the rain date for this fifth annual event.

The American Legion Auxiliary will be at the Harley-Davidson dealership during the registration period. Once a year, the Auxiliary seeks donations in exchange for poppies, the memorial flower of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary. The poppy, a replica of the poppies that bloomed on the battlefields of France, is handmade by disabled Veterans.

The Disabled American Veterans will staff a tent from 9 a.m.- 1 p.m. providing free professional assistance to veterans and their families in obtaining benefits and services earned through military service provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs and other agencies of government.

Dupont Road/I-69 intersection revamp begins Work has begun on a new interchange conďŹ guration at Indiana 1/Dupont Road and Interstate 69.

Motorists can expect to see earth work occurring behind temporary barriers at the four corners of the ramps through mid-May. To avoid delays, motorists may seek alternative routes, such as the new Union Chapel Interchange at Exit 317.

The interchange modiďŹ cation is called a diverging diamond interchange and is the ďŹ rst of its kind in Indiana.

Brooks 1st Construction won the low bid of $3.5 million, with completion scheduled for late October.

Stoplights have been switched to temporary spans.

Wayne District announced that 35-mph speed limit signs have been posted on Dupont Road. Motorists should be mindful that from the Dupont Commerce Court entrance to Parkview Plaza that this is an active construction zone and the speed limit will be enforced. The I-69 off ramp to Dupont Road is now restricted to one turn lane in each direction.

The interchange will be converted from a traditional diamond to a diverging diamond interchange. When entering the DDI, drivers will cross over to the left side of the bridge, guided by signals, signs and pavement markings. “This conďŹ guration efďŹ ciently allows drivers to maneuver to and from I-69 with little to no delays. TrafďŹ c congestion

is reduced by eliminating the left-turn phase from the trafďŹ c signal cycle,â€?

The statement continued: “Statistics show this type of conďŹ guration reduces right angle and rear-end crashes. Also, the gentle curves and low speeds reduce the number of injury-related crashes by 50 percent. As for capacity, research shows that mobility will be increased for SR 1/Dupont Road corridor. “Often the cost to construct a DDI is less than a traditional diamond interchange. The same is true for this particular project. Since widening

Dempsey has participated in theater as an extra, and is helping to direct for the ďŹ rst time. She plans to take theater classes when she majors in English at Butler University.

Fritz is directing for the fourth time. She plans to attend Ball State University for theater education and theater production.

She said the directing experience helps to shape her acting, too. “You feel like you know what the director is already wanting,� she said.

Fritz said fellow students seem to react well to the guidance of directors their own age.

Fritz said the Leo production will create the right atmosphere for the auditeria audience. “You’re going to be thrown into the show the moment you walk into the theater,� she said.

Miami Heritage Days begin May 3 Miami Indian Heritage Days kicks off on Saturday, May 3, at the Chief Richardville House, 5705 Bluffton Road.

The Chief Richardville House is recognized as the oldest Native American structure in the Midwest, the ďŹ rst Greek Revival style house in Indiana, and the only extant Treaty House in the nation. The Chief Richardville House, Akima Pinsiwa Awiiki, was named a National Historic Landmark in 2012.

Sponsored by the History Center, Miami Indian Heritage Days programs are held from 1-4 p.m. the ďŹ rst Saturday of the month, May through November, and feature local artists, performers, and representatives from the Miami Indians and other Native American groups demonstrating aspects of their lasting heritage for the public to enjoy.

Admission for each Saturday event is $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. History Center members and children age 5 and under are admitted free. Admission also includes the opportunity to visit the Chief Richardville House.

Medicine Woman Drum will be featured May 3, beginning at 1 p.m. The group’s performances demonstrate the importance of drumming, singing and dancing in Miami society.

The remaining schedule includes: June 7 — Miami Clothing, with Sue Lester.

July 5 — Miami Dance, with Gloria Tippmann.

His home, built in 1827, is one of the premier attractions in the Historical Society’s collection since the restoration of the building’s exterior.

Seven seek ďŹ ve Huntertown council seats

All ďŹ ve seats on the Huntertown Town Council are up for election in 2014. New four-year terms will expire Dec. 31, 2018. In the Republican primary election May 6, seven candidates have ďŹ led for the ďŹ ve nominations. The candidates include four incumbents and three newcomers.

Town Council President Sue Gongwer did not seek re-election. All candidates offered opinions on the proposed sewage treatment plant. A permit application was denied by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, and the town is continuing to seek a permit. The town recently closed on the purchase of land for that project. The town clerk-treasurer post also is on the ballot. Two candidates ďŹ led for the Republican primary. â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘ TOWN COUNCIL â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘ Michael Aker Incumbent Aker is completing his ďŹ rst term on the council. He has lived in Huntertown since 2000, one year after graduating from Leo High School.

He earned his EMT certiďŹ cation and worked with the Huntertown Fire Department for three years before joining the Fort Wayne Fire Department. He continues as a volunteer member of the Huntertown department.

Aker also serves as the Americans with Disabilities Act coordinator for the town, reminding contractors to abide by standards for intersections, sidewalks and ramps.

He said Huntertownâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greatest asset is its smalltown appeal, and said the continuing building in the area conďŹ rms its appeal.

He said sewage treatment rates the town pays to the city of Fort Wayne validate Huntertownâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s move to separate from Fort Wayne and establish its own sewage treatment plant.

Aker said he would like to see the utility upgrades and road projects completed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re making progress. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re moving forward,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘ James Fortman Incumbent Fortman has lived in Huntertown since 1979 and has served on the council 11 years. He has served as council president multiple times, most recently two years ago. He is retired from Verizon, and is a bus driver for Northwest Allen County Schools.

Fortman said Huntertownâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greatest asset is its people. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I like it because it has the small town feel, good neighbors,â&#x20AC;? he said.

The most immediate challenge is to complete the sewage treatment

plant, he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I believe the sewer plant is in our best interest ďŹ nancially for the town,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All of our sewage and all of our inďŹ ltration will go in and we will be able to discharge to Fort Wayne on a regulated rate.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m active in our church here in Huntertown, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m active in the community,â&#x20AC;? he said.

He formerly served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, which he said is no longer active. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I enjoy being on the council. I enjoy being active and involved with whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going on,â&#x20AC;? he said. He said he has been heavily involved in the Carroll Road and Gump Road projects, in addition to the sewer project. â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘ Patricia Freck Incumbent Freck has lived in Huntertown since childhood.

She is in her fourth year on the town council.

Freck works for Raytheon Co., in Fort Wayne. She also serves on the board of Friends of Huntertown Parks. She said she also supports the community through her church and by supporting 4-H activities. She is a former Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteer.

She said the town needs to focus on economic development. She said a 2012 referendum entrusted the utilities to a separate oversight board to authorize contracts and to ensure affordable utilities. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They oversee the utility workers,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But I as a council member donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have control over that.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re working hard toward the park right now,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have a great concrete walking path around the outer edge, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re seeing more

and more visitors to the park and as it develops we are going to see even more residents come out and use it.â&#x20AC;? She, too, said Huntertown projects a distinct, small town appeal. â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘â&#x20AC;˘ David Garman First-time candidate German is the head custodian at Hickory Center Elementary School. He retired from SuperValu Distribution after 25 years. He has volunteered with the ďŹ re department for almost 30 years and as a baseball coach for 25 years. He moved to Huntertown in 1970. He said the small town atmosphere is its greatest appeal.

He said he has been watching the council for about ďŹ ve years. He said the town has spent too much money on its pursuit

of an IDEM permit for the sewage treatment plant. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m ďŹ guring out why we spent all this money on something thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s so expensive and most of the residents donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The cheaper alternative is to stay with the city of Fort Wayne with waste treatment and water.â&#x20AC;?

Garman also said proposed rate increases are excessive.

If elected, he said, he would make sure town council visitors have easy access to materials being discussed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been very happy at the council meetings. (ALLEN COUNTY) The nationwide credit crisis may have turned “the American dream” into an extended nightmare for many Indiana home buyers and sellers.

Banks and mortgage lenders (who are not going out of business) have tightened up their lending requirements to the point where many home buyers today can no longer qualify for a mortgage.

Record foreclosures, rising unemployment, losses in the financial markets and the current credit crunch have not only reduced the number of buyers who can buy but have also increased the number of houses that sellers need to sell.

Prices are under pressure as home sellers lower their asking price to attract a buyer, and as lenders resell their foreclosed homes below market value.

And it’s turning into a vicious cycle -- as many buyers need to sell their current home first -- and many sellers (unless they plan to rent) need new financing to get into their next home. As a result, a sea of real estate agents, mortgage brokers and home builders are going out of business. These professionals are in the business of serving buyers and sellers. But that’s hard to do with the credit crisis when the entire real estate industry traditionally relies on mortgage lending to finance buyers and get houses sold.

What can homeowners do to sell their homes? How can buyers get financing if they can’t meet the tougher lending criteria on credit scores, income verification, down payment amounts and debt ratios?

There’s one local real estate professional who has found a way to make things work even with the present banking crisis. Mike MacDonald is the president of Summit City Investments, Inc. Since 1999, his private investment company has been buying houses throughout the Allen County, IN region without ever relying on banks.

MacDonald’s company takes over existing mortgages or brings in private lenders allowing him to pay homeowners all cash for the properties. He then offers his properties for rent or “for sale by owner” using a variety of unique seller financing programs.

By taking a long term approach and never relying on banks, business has never been better for MacDonald and his company.

“Most sellers are unaware of the options we offer.

What they need most is a qualified buyer... and we might just be that buyer.

We can buy houses in as-is condition, pay top dollar and close in just a few days… or whenever they’re ready.”

Mike says it’s normal for people to think

they must be desperate before calling him to buy their house. “It’s a very common misconception. But until I look at a house and do some research, I won’t know my game plan for the property or what I can offer. But after a single visit to the property and meeting with the homeowners I can let them know exactly what I can do. My offer is good for 7 days and it’s only at that point, with my offer on the table, that a seller can decide if I’m going to become their buyer.”

In fact, price is not an issue for MacDonald. As an investor, what’s important to him is the determination of what income the property can produce. “It’s easy to determine. I also do an appraisal and look at the recent comparable sales. Then I do whatever I can to offer a seller up to full price today -- or about what they might net sometime in the future pursuing a more conventional route. What I can pay depends on the condition, location and financing options available for that type of property. It only takes about 10 minutes to prescreen a property over the phone and to set an appointment. We typically buy 1 out of every 4 properties we see. In fact, for about half of those I have purchased, the seller pursued their other options and then came to realize that my offer was the best all along.”

MacDonald believes the three biggest reasons a house doesn’t sell are: 1) it is overpriced, 2) it is poorly marketed, or 3) it is not fixed up to show well. “I can pay a fair price on a home that needs work. I might even plan to increase the value or marketability by adding a bedroom or bath, finishing a basement or installing a new heating system. Brand new carpet and paint will go a long way to attract a qualified buyer. But I understand that many sellers don’t have the time, inclination or money to remodel a house... just to get it sold. We solve that problem for sellers.”

Overpricing a home could be the biggest mistake.

Listing agents sometimes suggest (or a seller might decide) to ask for a higher price than needed. This might be to test the market or leave wiggle room to negotiate.

However, this can backfire if the seller wants (or needs) a quick sale, or when the “days on the market” stacks up causing buyers to wonder what’s wrong with the property.

Another misconception about how Mike MacDonald buys houses is the idea that he’s probably looking for sellers in financial distress. “Look, when a seller is out of time or out of options, then I’m usually their best solution -- if their property is not over-financed. But most people headed for foreclosure are either overleveraged or actually looking to save their house. If I buy the house the seller must move. They really need to get into a more affordable home... but sometimes I can help by swapping properties.”

MacDonald warns about companies and real estate investors who target distressed homeowners. “Recent laws have been passed in Indiana that apply to any business and investor who targets people in foreclosure. Be cautious, do your research and perhaps seek legal advice when anyone wants to charge you an upfront fee for helping to get your loan modified, or... if they’re promising to lease the home back to you. That rarely works out like the borrower expects and can lead to accusations of fraud.

Perhaps rightly so.”

What does a real estate investor like Mike MacDonald do with the houses he

buys each month? What about the hundreds of houses his company has bought throughout Allen County, Indiana over the last 14 years? Simple. He rents them out or resells them. “We’re usually managing 80 to 100 properties at any given time -- making us one of the largest owners of single family homes in the area. Each month we may have 10 to 15 houses for sale. Some we’ve owned for years and others we have recently bought.”

With a reasonable down payment, MacDonald says he can sell you one of his properties using his popular owner financing programs -- even if you have damaged credit or a short job history.

His most popular owner financing “If you can afford a first month’s rent, a last month’s rent and a security deposit, then I can probably sell you one of my houses.”

Our lenders are mostly local individuals seeking alternatives to low bank CD rates. They earn 8 to 10% interest on real estate notes well-secured by our properties. When we get our buyer cashed out, we finally make our money and can payoff our investor. These investors usually want to reinvest allowing us to buy even more houses.”

Unfortunately many of the mortgage programs once available are now gone. It’s reported that 75% of the available lending disappeared when FHA changed their rules last October and again early this year. But, if you have money to put down and can prove your income, there are still loans available now. In fact, some rural development loans and VA loans still allow qualified buyers to borrow with no money down.

“We help all of our buyers get a bank loan as quickly as possible... or we finance them ourselves. But we’ve never relied on banks. That keeps us in control and maintains our sanity. But we get those loans done every chance we get. In fact, sometimes a buyer can qualify and doesn’t even know it.

Other times they can qualify but need a flexible seller. We’re one of the most creative and flexible sellers you’ll ever find,” says MacDonald.

Redwood plans four apartment developments

Ohio-based Redwood Living will bring its distinctive single-story apartment-homes concept to Fort Wayne beginning this year, with four complexes that will contain a total of more than 500 units.

Bill Drinkall and NAI Harding Dahm have been acting as northeast Indiana site selector for the apartment builder and manager, which also is looking at locations in Warsaw, Elkhart and Mishawaka, and already has several complexes in Indianapolis.

Work has already begun on the ďŹ rst of the Fort Wayne projects, Maplecrest by Redwood, and a ceremonial groundbreaking was held March 21. Redwood also is

planning complexes: at Lima and Wallen roads; off Diebold Road; and at Noyer Road Drinkall off Illinois Road.

Its total investment in the projects is estimated at $35 million to $45 million.

Redwoodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s target markets are empty-nesters and younger professionals, and the company duplicates the style and structure of its units, with some mostly cosmetic differences, in all its projects.

Each apartment community consists entirely of single-story, two-bedroom, two-bath units, about 1,300 square feet in size, with private attached two-car garages. The open concept design and

Diva Dash 2014 to beneďŹ t Girls on the Run Diva Dash will dash through Fort Wayne on Saturday, May 31, and a local charity will beneďŹ t.

Girls and women of all ages may join the run, which last year raised more than $3,000 for a national womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s health campaign. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This year that money is going to a local group, Girls on the Run, and I think thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a real nice ďŹ t,â&#x20AC;? said Maureen Partee, the marketing director for Georgetown Square, 6400 E. She said Girls on the Run is slowly building, adding more schools and serving more girls in grades ďŹ ve through eight. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They have mentors who go into the schools and work with the girls, and just kind of build the girls up,â&#x20AC;? Pine Hills Learning Place completes update Deb Ingram is grateful to the community surrounding Pine Hills Learning Place. She said that community also shows its gratitude to Pine Hills, in many ways.

Ingram directs the child care center at 11331 Coldwater Road, where a recent ribbon-cutting celebrated a major renovation. Pine Hills serves ages 6 weeks to 12 years.

Pine Hills Church opened at that location in 1974, but since has moved to 4704 Carroll Road. The center opened in 1976, and expanded after the church moved. Pine Hills is negotiating for a church to tenant the vacant sanctuary.

Ingram has worked with Pine Hills for 27 years.

She is part of a staff of 44 full-time and part-time employees who care for as many as 237 children each day. The total active family enrollment is about 400. Students from earlier years now play other roles at Pine Hills, Ingram said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Carroll High School football players are just like celebrities,â&#x20AC;? she said.

765 to steam home to Three Rivers Festival

On July 12 and 13, steam locomotive No. 765 will come rolling into downtown Fort Wayne on the elevated railroad overpass next to Headwaters Park — just like it did for the first time almost 60 years before.

Fort Wayne’s historic steam locomotive will be running passengers on round trips from Detroit to Fort Wayne for the Three Rivers Festival this year, following the route of a train that was known as the Detroit Arrow.

“In the past, we’ve operated trips out of Fort Wayne during the festival, but we really wanted to return to the Detroit line and bring folks to Fort Wayne,” said Kelly Lynch, communications director for the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society.

“We’ll be re-tracing the route between Detroit and Fort Wayne in much the same way that our Wabash Cannonball train retraced

the route between Fort Wayne and Lafayette [last fall].”

“This is the first in-bound steam excursion to Fort Wayne since the

1990s and Detroit’s first steam excursion trip since 1994,” he added. “It’s 20 years to the weekend.”

Young Eagles fly for free thanks to volunteer pilots Area young people ages 8-17 will have a chance to take to the skies on Saturday, May 10, as Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 2 holds a Young Eagles Flight Rally at Smith Field Airport.

Each pilot volunteers their time and aircraft so the flights can be provided free.

Those attending the flight rally on May 10 are asked to come to the large hangar behind the former terminal building at 426 W. Ludwig Road, starting at 9 a.m., to register for their flight. A parent or guardian must be present to sign the registration form. Registration closes about 11 a.m. Flights will begin at 9 a.m., weather-permitting.

The rally is part of the EAA Young Eagles Program, created to interest young people in aviation. Since the program was launched in 1992, volunteer EAA pilots have flown more than 1,800,000 young people who reside in more than 90 countries.

Pilots hope to give a new generation a chance to learn more about the possibilities of aviation.

“The elevation is a very big stage for us to present the 765 to the city,” Lynch said.

Though most of the recent trips on the 765 originated in Fort Wayne, Lynch said that it was important to the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society to have travelers come to Fort Wayne this time.

“The 765 is an extremely unique cultural asset and tourist attraction … and it’s our own to celebrate and benefit from,” he said.

“The world goes where the 765 is, and its home is right here in Fort Wayne.”

Construction at Dupont Corner, a shopping center slated for a 40-acre property at the corner of Dupont and Diebold roads, has been put on hold temporarily because of Allen County’s plans to widen Diebold.

Developer Don Steininger said that site preparation and infrastructure work within the site will continue, but no buildings will go up until after the county does the Diebold project, probably sometime in 2015.

With the housing market strengthening and retail space in the Dupont Road corridor in short supply, new development there was inevitable, Steininger said when he filed plans for the project last year.

The land sits diagonally opposite the new Manchester University College of Pharmacy.

The presence of Parkview Regional Medical Center and Dupont Hospital and their associated medical office buildings nearby, the proximity of the Interstate 69 and Dupont Road interchange, construction of a new interchange at I-69 and Union Chapel Road and, of course, plentiful housing, all make the area desirable for retail uses.

The widening of Diebold Road will increase the site’s appeal to potential retail tenants.

The site will be developed in two phases, beginning with outlots along the Dupont and Diebold road frontage.

The second phase of the development would include the anchor. No deals have been signed, but there are basically three candidates: Target, Meijer and Walmart.

The anchor would sit inside the L-shaped configuration of outlots, and a small strip built at a right angle to the anchor would contain additional tenants.

When it is completed, Dupont Corner is expected to contain about 300,000 square feet of retail space, about half the size of Chapel Ridge.

FWMoA celebrates 30 years in current space

On April 15, the Fort Wayne Museum of Art (FWMoA) celebrated 30 years in its current location.

Before coming to its current location in 1984, the museum had previously existed with classes and exhibitions, but primarily in residential homes. Executive Director Charles Shepard said that this was a key turning point for the museum.

“The museum has been around for 80, almost 90 years … but it’s only been 30 years that the museum has been coordinated and consolidated in a professional museum environment,” he said. This “ushered in the opportunity for us to become a professional museum.”

In the 1950s the Fine Arts Foundation (now Arts United) started formulating plans for a museum. The land was purchased in 1966, and in 1979, after a number of feasibility studies, the board of trustees passed a resolution to build a new facility.

The building was designed by Walter A. Netsch and the architectural firm was MSKTD. The program from its dedication day described it like this: “The bricks and mortar, the works of art, the programs and festivities are the visible signs of a commitment to a philosophy which focuses on art as an essential element in the lives of all people. The dream ‘… to dedicate a place for art … where the spirit can be enlarged as well as sustained’ for our community is a persistent one.”

Shepard said that while the museum has changed through the years, it’s never stopped maturing. While the early years were focused on learning how to exist in a professional space and the second phase of the museum was reaching out and bringing in high-profile shows, he said that it’s come to a point at which the museum is capable of much more.

“I’ve had the luxury to say let’s renovate and make the building bigger … and let’s start authoring our own shows and originate things,” he said. “In this case we bring a quality of museum … that is comparable to much bigger cities. And frankly, I think we’re more relevant to our community than many of these.”

in 1984, the museum has seen roughly three million people and 500 exhibits. Shepard said that the people who visit are key to the way the museum does things. He sees himself, he said, as a public servant.

“This is the community’s museum,” he continued. “Whatever we do, we want to involve those people.”

Canal Days books Rhett Walker Band The New Haven Canal Days Committee together with the New Haven Adams Township Parks and Recreation Department announced that the Rhett Walker Band will appear in a free concert Saturday evening, June 7, in Schnelker Park.

The Southern and Christian rock bandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s show is part of the 2014 Canal Days Festival, June 3 through 7. The time of the concert and other details remain to be determined.

This will be the festivalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second Faith & Family Night, which aims

to bring together all generations and all denominations to celebrate the community. In 2013, the bands Love & the Outcome and the Sidewalk Prophets drew an estimated crowd of 4,000 to New Haven for an evening in the park. Concertgoers came from as far away as Ontario, Pennsylvania and Iowa. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Come to the River,â&#x20AC;? the Rhett Walker Bandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s debut album, was released in 2012. The albumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s debut single, â&#x20AC;&#x153;When Mercy Found Me,â&#x20AC;? garnered the band a Grammy nomi-

nation for Contemporary Christian Musicâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s song of the year in 2012.

League in sixth season of ‘something good’

“You tell people that we’re doing something good here in the community.”

Sherri Emerson manages information as efficiently as her brother Steve manages basketball. Both work on behalf of Summit City Youth Prep Basketball League.

It’s almost year-round work for Sherri and “Coach.” When one season ends, another begins, and recruiting continues. That makes fund raising an ongoing project, too.

“We’re reaching out because we want to continue helping kids,” Sherri said of her appeal to sponsors. “We want to be a point of light, where we can have something where they can come to. It’s becoming a well known organization out in the community, and a lot of coaches are familiar with what we’re doing.”

The league is halfway through its sixth season, playing each Saturday in the gym at Parkwood Church of God, 3320 Trier Road, at the southeast corner of the Hobson Road intersection. The first game begins at 10 a.m. each Saturday through May 3.

Admission is $5.

“The league offers organized competitive basketball at a low cost,” Sherri said in a letter to potential sponsors.

“Furthermore, we are helping students who were not fortunate enough to make their own high school basketball team.”

Four Summit City basketball teams will play each Saturday morning through May 3 at Parkwood Church of God.

Sherri Emerson directs most of the credit to her brother. “Coach Emerson is doing the play-byplay,” she said. “He is a walking encyclopedia on sports. There is nothing he doesn’t know about basketball and football.

And it’s very exciting. The parents love it. The kids love it. So it just adds one more positive thing for the children to hear what the coach has to say, like ‘Somebody made a shot from downtown.’”

To be eligible for the league, players must carry at least a C average at school. “Coach looks at the report cards, too,” Sherri said.

Off the court, Sherri is the voice of the league.

And she is the walking encyclopedia of details.

• The regular season ends April 26, with two games each morning.

The one-day, post-season tournament will be at Parkwood on Saturday,

“This has been our biggest attendance this year,” she said. “We’re constantly going to get chairs. But we want the people, especially the people that live in the area, to know that we have something good going on in the community, and we want them to come out and be supporters.”

Purdue Cooperative Extension offers this summer educational program for kids ages 8 and up. For 15 years, young adults interested in gardening have received hands-on training, tours and outdoor labs at the Allen County Extension Office on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The young adults also plant and maintain their own garden area during the summer.
