Attractions/Events Classic car festival shows Auburn at its finest AUBURN — Now in its seventh decade, the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival keeps finding ways to get bigger and better. Over the years, the festival has added new events and improved its longstanding traditions. The chance to see dozens of Auburn, Cord and Duesenberg classic cars — America’s most famous blend of automotive luxury, power and style — in one place occurs nowhere else but in Auburn on Labor Day weekend. The Parade of Classics and car display afterward on Saturday date back to 1956 as the centerpiece of the festival. The parade remains one of the best free car shows in America. Some 200
classic Auburns, Cords and Duesenbergs roll through Auburn’s streets to the courthouse square. Owners then park their cars around the square for spectators to admire. Since the festival’s beginnings, organizers have added to the fun that stretches over four days. In the festival’s recent history, Friday evening in downtown Auburn has grown into a giant, crowd-pleasing event anchored by an all-day cruise-in around the courthouse square with hundreds of special vehicles of all eras. Best of all, it’s free to spectators. Free musical performances by northeast Indiana’s favorite bands entertain crowds on Friday and Saturday nights, ending with

DeKalb County Fair AUBURN — Billed as “America’s Family Reunion,” the DeKalb County Free Fall Fair takes over the streets of Auburn for six days each year in the first week of autumn. Throughout the week, activities will take place around the DeKalb County Courthouse square in downtown Auburn, at the 4-H fairgrounds on South Union Street and on the main stage at 10th and Union streets. All entertainment shows are free of charge. The fair combines the thrill of amusement-park-style rides, the taste of favorite carnival foods and the sounds of top national and regional music acts. In the most traditional feature of a county fair, local exhibitors show off their

Kendallville has several major events that attract thousands of visitors to this eastern Noble County city each year. The Fourth of July Celebration on Tuesday, July 4, 2017, will feature the free Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra Patriotic Pops Concert outdoors on the Bixler Lake Park terraces overlooking the lake starting at 7:30 p.m. The annual fireworks show over the lake will follow the concert.

The annual Noble County Community Fair is July 8-15 at the Noble County Fairgrounds in Kendallville and features 4-H exhibits and animal shows, amusement rides, farm implement and tractor displays, grandstand concerts and events and food and game vendors. The Northern Indiana Fall Tri-State Bluegrass Festival is Labor Day weekend, Aug. 31-Sept. 3, 2017, at the Noble County Fairgrounds. The festival features regional and national bluegrass bands on stage, food and and Regulators Rendezvous Ahavath Sholom: 503 S. Main St., Ligonier, IN 46767. It is one of only two remaining 19th century Jewish temples in Indiana and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is currently home of the
music vendors, bluegrass workshops and camping. Attractions/Events Trine University offers new additions Trine University, formerly Tri-State, offers a wide variety of opportunities, not just for educational advancement, though that’s what it’s best known for. Along with educational offerings, there is the Zollner Golf Course and T. Furth Center for Performing Arts, among others, the latter of which brings in national and international acts throughout the year. The buzz about campus these days is the university’s addition of two modern athletic facilities. In progress is Trine’s constructio of $22 million local storytellers at the C.C.C. Thunder Ice Arena is going to take a prominent place on the west edge of what is considered downtown Angola, taking up residence in the 600 block of West Maumee Street, just west of Furth Center for Performing Arts. Separately, Trine is building the $13.3 million MTI Center, a 3,000-seat Indiana’s largest horse-drawn parade starts at dusk in Hamilton. Attractions Wild Winds Buffalo Preserve, 6975 N. Ray Road, Fremont, 495-0137 : Wild Winds Buffalo Preserve was started in Fremont in 1992 by Dr. John Trippy, a dentist from Ohio. He purchased his first bull, Bosco, and five cows and dedicated himself and the preserve to revitalizing the buffalo population. The herd at Wild Winds is now over 200 head strong. Staff offer tours of the preserve, including out into the herd, as well as tales of buffalo, history of the Native Americans and more. The preserve is also home to White Pine Lodge Bed and Breakfast. Guests are welcome to stay in the lodge, which is open 7 days a week all year. During warmer weather, adventurous types can camp in a tipi rented from the preserve. Rendezvous happen twice a year, spring and fall, at Wild Winds. Reenactors come out, camp primitive style and showcase the way of life in the 1840s. The preserve is free to enter and is open to the public. Tours into the herd are $10 for adults, $7 for children under 10 years old and free for children under age 2. Pokagon State Park, 450 Ln. 100 Lake James, Angola, 833-2012: Pokagon State Park was created in 1925 and is bordered by both Lake James and Snow Lake. The park features a number of attractions, including the refrigerated track toboggan slide, open from the day after Thanksgiving through February each winter. It is also the home of the Potawatomi Inn, which is open all year long for visitors.

Attractions/Events Visitors to Pokagon can explore the trails, experience nature up close in the nature center with park interpreters, swim at the beach, go on guided horseback tours at the saddle barn, camp and so much more. There is almost always something going on for guests to enjoy at Pokagon. Tri-State Steuben County Municipal Airport, 5220 W. U.S. 20, Angola, 665-3212: The airport is a public use airport established in 1930 by Paul D. Eyster. It is now owned by the Steuben County Board of Aviation Commissioners. In 2017, the airport hosted its first Things-N-Wings festival June 17 and 18. The festival will feature airplanes, public safety vehicles, food and more out at the airport. Area Parks/Nature Preserves Pokagon State Park Steuben County’s natural beauty is possibly showcased best, or at least the most accessible, in Pokagon State Park, located off of S.R. 127 just west of Interstate 69, exit 354. On the shore of Lake James and Snow Lake, Pokagon offers 1,260 acres of the great outdoors, featuring dense woods, lakes and wetlands, a nature preserve, many facilities for enjoying the outdoors, including a beach, and the park’s famous refrigerated toboggan slide. In addition, there’s Potawatomi Inn, an historic yet modern hotel overlooking Lake James. Potawatomi Inn has been named one of the top 25
DeKalb County ACRES Covell Nature Preserve As the first public preserve to open in DeKalb County, this preserve includes 96 acres immediately south of Auburn. It offers a new asset for anyone who wants to stay active and enjoy green spaces. Opened on Nov. 4, 2016, the preserve was created by ACRES Land Trust. The idea of a preserve at the site began with owner James P. Covell in 1999. He died in 2011 before the project could be finished.. This preserve protects approximately 2,700 feet of the west bank of Cedar Creek as well as numerous species and plants. Cedar Creek is one of three streams designated under the 1973 Indiana
resorts in the Midwest by Midwest Living magazine and was named the runner up for best corporate retreat by Indiana Business magazine. The inn features 138 guest rooms, cabins in the woods and conference facilities that will accommodate up to 500 guests. There are two restaurants and numerous other amenities for guests. Pokagon’s sister property, Trine State Recreation Area, is located just east of the park, off of C.R. 50, near I-69’s exit/entrance 354. TSRA offers some 200 acres of outdoor recreation on the shore of Gentian Lake, part of the Seven Sisters Natural, Scenic & Recreational Rivers Act. Some trees in the preserve date back more than 100 years. The preserve has a half-mile trail that travels through a wooded area. The Covell preserve lies along the north side of C.R. 52, east of C.R. 427. It is open from dawn to dusk, and admission is free. Paved parking is available on the north side of C.R. 52.

Steuben County lakes/ beaches Steuben County might best be known for its lakes, of which there are more than 100 (for tourism marketing purposes, the number 101 is used). The county’s lakes range in size from a few acres to 1,034 acres, which is Lake James, one of the state’s largest natural lakes. A majority of the lakes are in Jamestown and Pleasant townships. That’s where the Lake James chain is located, which includes Big and Little Otter lakes, Snow Lake, Lake James and Jimmerson Lake. Other major lakes in these two townships include Lake George, Barton Lake, Crooked Lake, Fox Lake and Loon Lake. Clear Lake, in the northeastern corner of the county at 800 acres, is considered to have some of the best water quality in the state, according to authorities with Indiana University and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

Lake Gage, a round, kettle-shaped lake near Orland, is about 332 acres and like Clear Lake, has extremely high water quality. Hamilton Lake, which is practically surrounded by the town of Hamilton in the southeastern corner of the county, has 802 surface acres. With all of the lakes along with Pigeon River, Fish Creek and Fawn River (Crooked Creek) it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Steuben County has a lot of water. In fact, about 9 percent of the county’s surface acreage is water. Some of the county’s lakes are highly developed, such as Lake James and Crooked Lake. Crooked Lake was one of the earliest in the county to be developed for recreational use. There once were passenger trains that carried visitors to Crooked Lake and Lake James. Many of the early cottages on county lakes have either been converted to year-round use or have been replaced with permanent homes, or modern second homes. A study sponsored by the Steuben County Community Foundation to inventory historic structures in Steuben County was buoyed upward due to the many older cottages on some of the lakes. Lake James’ hilly, wooded shoreline is dotted with lake cottages and homes. However, about one-fourth of the natural shoreline of James, in Pokagon State Park, remains much as it was when it was created by the glaciers. Pokagon’s shoreline extends to its northern boundary on Snow Lake. There, a steep, tree-covered hill drops off sharply to the water’s edge. Some of the county’s lakes remain natural wonders, with little encroachment by humans. Those include the Seven Sisters Lakes, at Trine State Recreation Area surround the shoreline. The Seven Sisters, the largest of which is Gentian Lake, are some of the most pristine lakes in the Midwest. Somewhat more accessible is Loon Lake, west of Angola. Much of Loon Lake is preserved by the Nature Conservancy, a private, international land conservation group. Loon Lake is home to many different species of rare and endangered plants and wildflowers, including carnivorous plants. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources maintains a fish hatchery along the Fawn River in Orland. There, DNR Fish and Wildlife biologists raise fish for stocking in Indiana lakes and also use the facility as a base from which to conduct research on fish and fisheries in Indiana.
