1919 Auburn steeped in family tradition

AUBURN — Perhaps the most significant car Steve Butler owns is a 1919 Auburn Touring 6-39.

“My grandfather and grandmother, Erton and Evelyn Manon, courted each other in a 1921 Auburn Beauty Six,” said Butler, an Auburn native who lives in Fort Wayne. “The story goes that my grandmother said of their first date, ‘This handsome young man came to pick me up, and the car was so beautiful, that was all it took.’”

Auburns were produced from 1900 to 1936, and in 1919 the Auburn Automobile Co. introduced its model called the Beauty Six. Shortly afterward, the founding Eckhart family sold the company to a group of investors from Chicago, also in 1919.

“I’m sure they were interested because of the strength in sales of the Beauty Six,” Jon Bill, a curator for the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum, said about the buyers. “There were more cars sold in 1919 than any year.”

The Beauty Six, with its six-cylinder engine, offered a streamlined, fenderless body and was an improvement over previous models in terms of reliability.

“By 1919, most companies had solved the reliability issue, and now cars were being sold on appearance,” Bill said.

“Auburns were stylish. That’s where the idea came from for the model name — calling it a Beauty Six.” Roughly half a dozen 1919 Auburns remain in the world, one of which resides

then, is very rare. The Beauty Six is certainly a significant and important part of the automobile history.”

Butler’s roots and family automobile history run deep. His grandfather, Ralph Butler, worked at the Auburn Automobile Co. and its successors from 1910 to 1960.

In 1974, Steve’s brother, Mike Butler, was hired as the first employee at the museum, working for four years. Steve and Mike Butler and their sister, Lisa Conrad, all worked at the museum.

The ACD festival is in its 60th year since ACD Club members’ first meeting at Auburn in 1956. The festival continues to attract thousands of spectators and car enthusiasts each year.

Steve Butler said, “I’ve gone to the (Auburn Cord Duesenberg) Festival since

I was a kid. I grew up in Auburn, so we’d go as children and young adults. I got my first Auburn in 1993, and I’ve been a steady participant for 20 years now.”

“What I like about the car is it’s a nice, big car that has plenty of space in the back seat,” Butler said about his Auburn. “It’s a different feel driving this car, and it takes a lot of work to drive it. It makes it very obvious why women didn’t drive in the teens. It’s a full-time job to drive this thing.”

He added, “Plus it gets two miles to the gallon, which is a another reason you don’t drive it long distances. We drive it to get ice cream and that sort of thing.”

Butler recently won the Lions Award in the Jazz Age class for his 1919 Auburn at the Concours d’Elegance of America car show in Plymouth, Michigan.

Bands will rock the square Friday, Saturday AUBURN — The 2016 Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival will present live music performances for festival-goers Friday and Saturday downtown.

The performances will go on from 6-11 p.m. Friday night for the Cruise In Concert and 6-11 p.m. again Saturday for the Fast and Fabulous Concert.

All performances will take place on a stage at the corner of Main and 8th streets.

Admission is free and open to all ages.

A fireworks show over downtown at dusk will highlight Saturday’s concert.

The lineup of entertainment:

Friday Chris Worth will perform from 6-8:30 p.m. Worth is a solo performer, singer and keyboardist who will sing a variety of songs from rock, country and R&B to Motown and jazz.

The second and final performance of

the night will feature Big Caddy Daddy, a local rock ’n’ roll band and crowd favorite.

The band is made up of five musicians — Todd Bishop on guitars and vocals, vocalist Meranda Garman, Doug Lude on guitars, sax and vocals, Gary Babineau on bass guitar and Gary Wright on drums and vocals.

Saturday Urban Legend will start the Saturday evening performances from 6-8:30 p.m.

The band performs a blend of rock, soul, R&B classics and current hits.

Freak Brothers will close out the music scene from 8:30-11 p.m. According the band’s website, the band has been nominated for five “WhatzUp” Whammy awards including “Best Live Band,” “Performer of the Year,” “Best Hip-Hop Group,” “Best Rock Cover Band” and “Best Funk/World Group.”

Cobras ready to strike on auction block

AUBURN — The Shelby AC Cobra Roadster is making its debut — times two — at Auctions America’s fall show in Auburn this year.

One is all ready to race, and the other looks just as hot. Or as Auctions America car specialist Megan Boyd puts it, “One is for go, one is for show.”

Those who prefer either, both, or something in between will likely find what they’re looking for at the Auburn Fall Car Collector Weekend, Aug. 31-Sept. 4 at the Auburn Auction Park.

About 1,000 cars will come up for sale during the four days of the auction. A free preview was held Wednesday starting at 3:30 p.m. The auction begins at noon on Thursday and at 10 a.m. Friday through Sunday.

Admission is $15 per day or $50 for an event pass. Children ages 12 and younger are admitted free.

The 1965 Shelby is expected to bring $1 million or more, while the 1964 version should fetch $825 or more, according to Auctions America.

A 1933 Duesenberg Model J Sunroof Berline is another star attraction. It’s one of few Duesenbergs surviving with coachwork done outside the U.S., and the only surviving Franay body on the Model J chassis.

The auction will feature a collection of domestic cars, including several convertibles, from the 1950s and ’60s, and will also have its share of muscle cars.

Among the specialty offerings will

be a 1964 Yamaha Batcycle, used in the “Batman” television series in the 1960s.

The sidecar can be removed and driven by itself.

Wendell the mechanical elephant also will be up for bid. The 1,400-pound, popular attraction is powered by a four-cylinder English sport engine, Boyd said.

Part of the proceeds from his sale will go to Kate’s Kart, which supplies children in hospitals with books they can read and take home. In addition, two-for-one admission to the park will be offered Friday with a book donation to Kate’s Kart.

“It’s a neat opportunity for us to support not just the community, but have fun with kids and also reading and education,” Boyd said.

The fall show will continue its tradition of celebrity appearances with former pro wrestler Bill Goldberg, who will be available for autographs during two sessions Saturday. A special Auburnthemed belt featuring a Duesenberg has been made for him.

The car corral and swap meet are back along with the popular helicopter rides, available each day for $30. Monster truck shows and freestyle sportbike shows are planned for Saturday and Sunday.

Cars & Coffee, held the first Saturday of each month since April, will have its final session during the weekend.

“We saw over 200 cars last month, so I think it will be interesting to see how many cars turn out for the auction event,” Boyd said. “Cars are coming from all over the

Children at the auction have more options this year. A scavenger hunt is planned, with each participant receiving a passport and visiting different spots on the grounds.

Cars will also be brought out for kids to explore.

“Kids can sit in the cars, touch the cars, feel the cars. That will be a neat experience,” Boyd said.

The grown-ups can get refreshed at the

new wine and microbrew garden, with several local wineries and breweries participating.

Making the weekend fun for all is the priority, Boyd said.

“We’re trying to expose that next generation of collectors to the world of cars, and see the ways they can access it,” Boyd said. “We have a lot of families that are coming with (more than one generation). We want to have something for everyone to enjoy. It is Labor Day weekend and kind of the culmination of summer.”

New Market on 6th event adds to Saturday’s lineup

AUBURN — The Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival has partnered with Peggy Souder of Possibilities on the Road to present Market on 6th.

Featuring vintage home decor and gifts, upscale boutiques and artisan foods, Market on 6th will take place on 6th street between Main and Van Buren streets on Saturday from noon to 8 p.m.

“We think this event will help to supplement the great things happening on Saturday of the festival,” said Sarah Payne, executive director of the ACD Festival. “You’ll be able to enjoy some shopping, watch the parade, shop more, then enjoy the evening’s entertainment.”

The market will feature live music from Joe Justice.

“We’ve got a great selection of shopping choices lined up for the day.

This is the place to be for shoppers

looking for unique finds,” said Souder, the event’s coordinator.

Market on 6th is an official participating event of the ACD Festival, with a portion of the proceeds going to the festival to support its mission. Information is available on the event’s Facebook page.

Payne said the festival is encouraging the community to explore its website at acdfestival.org and begin engaging with the festival on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram and Pinterest to stay up to date on the latest festival news.

AUBURN — Dedicated volunteers and staff members at the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum have brought back to life a rare 1912 Auburn 30L Special Sedan.

The Auburn is the featured automobile on the 2016 Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival poster.

It will be featured at the museum’s Cars and Coffee events and will be driven in the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival Parade of Classics.

The 1912 Auburn is the first closed automobile produced by the Auburn Automobile Co. Built specifically for the 1912 Boston Automobile Show, it was billed as “The Car of Tomorrow.” The as-new price for the Auburn in 1912 was $6,200, and it was sold at the Boston

Automobile Show to a gentleman from Canada.

The early sedan also has a few amenities that soon became standard on production automobiles, such as electric headlights. The doors are staggered, with the right one toward the rear and the left one at the front. The Auburn is powered by a four-cylinder Rutenber engine that produces 30 horsepower.

AUBURN — A brand new attraction is the highlight of a busy Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival weekend at the National Military History Center.

The first-ever Antiques and Fine Living Show is planned, and organizers hope it will appeal to a wide range of tastes and interests.

Along with antiques, the show will feature a furrier and fine chocolates from DeBrand.

The inaugural show will have its opening premiere today from 6-10 p.m.

Tickets are priced at $30 per person and include hors d’oeuvres and two beverage tickets. Those who attend also get the first crack at items offered by several antique vendors. The ticket price is also good for admission to the Kruse Automotive & Carriage Museum and the Victory Museum.

Dean, Mitch and Stuart Kruse will give presentations on the history of the ACD Festival.

The Antiques and Fine Living Show will run through the rest of the weekend.

Times are Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission will be $5, with concessions available.

All proceeds from the opening premiere and the show will benefit the National Military History Center.

The new event will be part of a busy weekend.

“We’re really going to be hopping out here that weekend,” events facilitator Amy Wilges said. “This building will be full.”

The Gunslingers Gun and Knife Show will be held Friday and Saturday. The museum also will serve its annual pancakeand-sausage breakfasts Saturday and Sunday from 7:30-10:30 a.m.

Golf carts will be shuttling people back and forth from the Auctions America park on the other side of Interstate 69. Auctiongoers can ride through the tunnel and visit all the attractions at the National Military

AUBURN — Things will be “hopping” at the National Auto and Truck Museum during the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival, according to the museum’s executive director Don Grogg.

On Friday, the museum will serve a pancake-and-sausage breakfast from 7-10 a.m. for a freewill donation.

“We have a lot of fun with that,” Grogg said.

The museum will host Worldwide Auctioneers for the company’s sale that begins Saturday at 6 p.m. It is the fifth year that the auction company has conducted its Labor Day weekend event at the museum.

In addition, the museum will welcome visitors throughout the festival and is proudly displaying the star of its collection, Futurliner No. 10.

Built by General Motors in 1939, along with 11 identical vehicles, the Futurliner toured the country educating the public on modern technology. It was restored by a group of volunteers, many of them former General Motors employees, in Michigan over a seven-year period.

“They did a beautiful job on it,” Grogg said. “We’re real proud of it.”

According to a book that describes the Futurliner, the restoration involved at least 100 people, 23,000 hours, 5,000 cups of coffee, 3,000 doughnuts, $100,000 in cash contributions and $330,000 in vendor gifts in-kind.

The doors of the Futurliner will be open, allowing the public to see inside the vehicle.

“It’s going to be a big draw,” Grogg said.

For Grogg, the festival will be somewhat “bittersweet,” he said, as he will retire Nov. 20 after 10 years at the helm of the museum. But retiring does not mean

Grogg will be absent from the museum.

He will continue to serve as one of the “drivers” of a capital campaign with the ultimate goal of raising about $8 million for restoration, reconstruction and new construction of additions that would house educational space and displays.

Grogg said the renovation and construction project will be broken into three phases.

The first phase, known as the preservation phase, would see a new roof on the existing museum factory buildings, exterior wall repairs, facade restoration, storm reconstruction and Americans with Disabilities Act updates. That work has an estimated price tag of $1 million, Grogg said.

The second phase of the proposed project, named the “Exposition,” would see the construction of a building on land the museum owns to the south of the existing buildings. It would include display space for an additional 15-20 vehicles and provide larger meeting rooms and additional parking. That phase of the proposed project carries an estimated price of $3 million.

The final phase of the project, known as “Parade of Progress,” would involve construction of a new building to the north of the museum that would be used to display the Futurliner and its support vehicle, General Motors period cars and the Parade of Progress story. Completing the “Parade of Progress” phase comes with an estimated cost of $4 million.

New event shows off museum’s plaza

AUBURN — The Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum will celebrate its newest addition — the Education and Exhibit Plaza — during this weekend’s Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival.

Party in the Plaza, a new festival event, will take place Saturday from 5-8 p.m. and will feature live music from the Farmland Jazz Band, hors d’oeuvres and camaraderie, said museum Chief Operating Officer Kendra Klink.

Construction of the new plaza was not quite complete during last year’s festival, Klink said. The Saturday-night party will be a chance to showcase the feature.

Tickets cost $30 per person and are available by contacting the museum at 925-1444 or info@automobilemuseum.org.

The event will take place rain or shine.

In addition to the new event, the museum will continue to host other popular activities throughout the festival.

Things will kick off tonight with the 11th annual Benefit Extravaganza. This year’s event will support the museum’s archives preservation and access project and education programs. The event will feature a cocktail hour, dinner and silent and live auctions.

The museum’s Gatsby Gala Ball will take place Saturday from 7-11 p.m., with music, dancing, after-hours museum touring, signature cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Tickets are $30 for museum members and $50 for nonmembers.

As the festival celebrates 2016 as the Year of the Closed Auburn, the museum will showcase its 1912 closed Auburn during the festival’s Parade of Classics Saturday. Klink said the vehicle has been on display at the museum, but has not been “up and running” for 40 or 50 years. The museum’s “pit crew” volunteers have been hard at work to change that.

“The volunteers really have taken a lot of pride in loving that car back to running status,” Klink added.

Docent-led tours of the museum will be offered throughout the festival. Space

is limited and reservations are suggested.

Tours will take place Friday at 2 p.m., Saturday at 10 a.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.

The museum also will host special presentations during the festival. “Hoosier Classics — Indiana’s Automotive Heritage & Legacy” will take place Friday at 11 a.m. “Women Workers of the Auburn Automobile Co.” will be offered Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. “1937 Cord & Stevens Challenge Trophy,” will take place Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

“We stay busy with a lot of visitors throughout the weekend,” Klink said.

Great Race coming in 2017 AUBURN — Auburn will host the Great Race during a race stop June 28, 2017.

The event will begin in Jacksonville, Florida, on June 18, 2017, and end in Traverse City, Michigan, on July 2, 2017.

Sunday tour features historic homes Four Auburn homes will be featured on the third annual Classic City Historic Homes Tour Sunday, Sept. 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The tour is presented by the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival and Tri Kappa Sorority. Tickets are priced at $10 per person for entry into all four homes and are available at Lyn Maree’s, 209 N. 815 Midway Drive The residence at 815 Midway Drive is home to Chris and Amy Schweitzer.

The Colonial Revival cottage was built around 1912 in the expanding suburbs on Auburn’s north side.

Features of the home include a boxed bay window on the first story, carved woodwork around window and door openings and a modern rear addition.

The house was built for William Wyatt and his wife, Sarah. Wyatt spent his earlier years owning and operating a farm in Concord Township and his later years working as a farm hand.

Midway Drive, where the home is located, was so named because the original midway of the DeKalb County Fairgrounds was located on the land. The homes in

the area chiefly were built between 1910 and 1930 and represent the prosperity and growth experienced in Auburn during that time.

718 N. Main St. This Queen Anne-style house is the home of David and Veronique Poudrier.

The Queen Anne style was popular throughout the country during the last quarter of the 19th century and was noted for its ornamental excess and seen as a symbol of wealth and success.

Built around 1880, the house features an irregular silhouette with a central, steeply pitched, hipped roof, gabled extensions and a turret. The exterior wall surface includes diagonal patterned clapboard in the front gable and fishscale trim at the roofline, in the gables and around many of the windows.

A second-story porch under the turret roof features turned columns and spindle work typical of the Queen Anne style, while the first-story porch is more typical of the 20th century Craftsman style.

302 N. Van Buren St. The house was built around 1880 for Christopher Columbus Shaffer. Initially making a name for himself as a cabinet maker, Shaffer later expanded his business to include furniture-making and eventually started an undertaking business. After Shaffer’s death in 1906, the home was sold to Sherman Hollister and remained in the Hollister family for three decades. The house is one of only two Second Empirestyle houses in Auburn. It features a mansard roof with patterned slate shingles, a two-story bay window, steeply pitched dormers with pointed arched windows and two decorative porches.

More recently, the home operated as Serendipity Inn Bed and Breakfast. Now it is the residence of Richard and Danielle Zollman.

‘Muzzy’ keeps classics moving

AUBURN — Without Tony Muzzillo, the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival’s Parade of Classics each Labor Day weekend might be significantly shorter.

Muzzillo keeps more than two dozen classic Auburns and Cords running with maintenance in his Muzzy’s Auto Repair garage on the southwest edge of Auburn.

“Half of what I do is Auburns and Cords,” Muzzillo said about his shop.

“I’ve worked on hundreds of Auburns.

I’ve restored two of them — complete restorations from the ground up.”

On one afternoon this summer, six Auburns filled Muzzy’s garage — ranging from 1927 to 1935 in vintage.

Muzzillo grew up learning the special set of knowledge needed to care for the antique autos. He started working on old cars with his father, Jerry, in 1977.

“I didn’t know it was a knack. I thought it was something everybody did,” Tony Muzzillo said. “I taught myself how to do everything just watching my dad.”

Jerry Muzzillo got his start at one of the first Kruse collector car auctions in Auburn in the early 1970s. Watching the sale as a spectator, he volunteered to fix a Duesenberg that wouldn’t start. When he succeeded, a career was launched.

For more than 30 years, Tony Muzzillo helped his father part-time.

“I took over the business in ’09 because he was ready to slow down, and I didn’t want to disappoint people in the community,” Tony Muzzillo said. “I’m doing this out here all by myself, now.”

Jerry Muzzillo had accumulated a set of Chilton repair manuals from 1930 to the present that he left in Tony’s hands.

“It tells you a lot of things you just wouldn’t know,” Tony said about his father’s collection of Chilton and other automotive books.

But most of Muzzillo’s knowledge has come through experience. One of the secrets he’s learned about maintaining old cars is the importance of checking all fluid levels.

“Most of these sit except for one month a year,” he said about the classics he services. “All the seals leak in them, because they aren’t used.”

The seals in old cars are made of leather instead of rubber, Muzzillo said.

The alcohol content in today’s gasoline takes a harsh toll on them.

“I’m changing fuel pumps, sometimes every year in the same car, and they only drove it for a month last year,” he said.

“I like to add an electric fuel pump. It saves a lot of wear and tear.”

New brakes are another frequent need, and they can cost up to $1,000.

“Half of them have mechanical brakes,” he said. “They didn’t even have hydraulic brakes yet. That’s a good niche — is to be able to figure these brakes out.”

As for drivers of old cars, he said, “They’re not used to these kind of brakes. A big complaint is that they don’t stop very well. You have to keep good following distance. You have to be more of a driver.”

Owners also worry about odors from their classics. Muzzillo explained that with old cars, which don’t have sealed fluid systems, “You smell oil and you smell gas in your garage if you own one of these things.”

If an old car doesn’t have an oil leak, Muzzillo said with a laugh, “The reason it doesn’t leak is — it’s out of oil.”

old cars, Muzzillo said, “I hardly ever tell anybody no.” It’s a trait he inherited.

Muzzillo tells a story about stopping to help an antique-car owner who was stranded on Interstate 69 near Auburn.

After Muzzillo got the old car running again, the owner told him, “I was through here a few years back, and some guy named Muzzy stopped and helped me.” That was Muzzillo’s father and role model, Jerry.

“That’s how much alike we are,” Tony Muzzillo said about himself and his dad.

“We stopped and helped the same guy five years apart.”

Invitation to Auburn started it all in ’56 Enthusiasm was called ‘near-electrifying’ AUBURN — The first reunion of Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club members in Auburn took place not on Labor Day weekend, but on Oct. 20 and 21 in downtown Auburn.

The event moved to mid-September for 1957 and settled on Labor Day weekend in 1958.

On Sept. 15, 1956, Joe Knapp of Wyandotte, Michigan, sent this letter to ACD Club members inviting them to the first event.

Dear Alumnus: Ever since the Cord Corporation closed its doors in 1937, the men and companies who played the roles in bringing to the automotive scene the Auburn, the Cord and the Duesenberg, have gone their separate ways.

But this group had a sort of texture all

its own … like a fine fabric. Close-knit, all of these elements, these threads, interwove a regal mantle of styling and engineering. All of you now are parts of another cloth, but the quality lingers on.

The new weaves and patterns are best accomplished by older hands and, as they can and will, reflect a rightful wisdom and heritage gleaned from these golden year.

This age can never die because it produced too much. Despite the tremendous advances since the ’30s, there still burns a glowing admiration and near-fanatic dedication for these Hallmarks. It is natural and right, then, that a group should take root in this firm and fertile ground.

Almost four years ago, the ACD Club was founded. Since then, as its dedicated

ranks grew, it has helped to perpetuate the spirit that was amongst these automobiles.

This spirit, this warming camaraderie, has shown itself in the literature, lore and anecdotes which have come to light and also in the many meets and gatherings that have taken place all over the country.

And now to the wonderful point of this letter …

Our October gathering will be in Auburn, Indiana; and it will be a homecoming in every sense of the word.

In conjunction with this meeting, Roy Faulkner, former President of the Auburn Automobile Company, had begun plans for a grand reunion of all the wonderful people who were part of this picture … vendors, suppliers, personnel of all the divisions. Tragically, Roy passed away just a few weeks ago, but the impetus of his wonderful, intriguing plan is on the move.

Story describes plans for second ACD reunion Event moved from October to middle of September in ’57 AUBURN — A 1957 edition of The Evening Star carried this story, reporting on plans for the second Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club reunion and describing the first reunion in 1956: The story ran under the headline: “Parade of Old Model Cars to be Feature of another Reunion to be Held in This City Sept. 13, 14, 15.”

Following the warm enthusiasm voiced by all who were concerned with the gala fall, 1956, meeting held by the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Club, an annual reunion has been instituted and will take place this September, Joseph L. Knapp, chairman for the meeting, announced today.

To be known as the Roy H. Faulkner

annual reunion, the gathering will perpetuate the fellowship and close association held by the many former employees of the Cord Corporation.

Mr. Faulkner passed away last summer just as he was readying the plans for the first grand reunion. The impetus of his plans, however, bore fruit and last October 29, Auburn literally bulged at the seams with hundreds of A.C.D. Club members and former associates, employees and suppliers of the Auburn Empire. Car after car moved in stately procession to herald what had always been Mr. Faulkner’s fond dream — a grand reunion.

The success of the meeting and the continued queries following has made it possible to envisage this as an annual affair. Rightfully so it is named the Roy H. Faulkner annual reunion.

Auburn every year. Thus it is that desire for a reunion and meeting coincide in a weld of enthusiasm.

As last year, the gathering will begin Friday afternoon with early arrivals. In ones and twos, glittering chrome and flawless paint will cruise by turnpike and back road to headquarters in the Auburn Hotel. By Saturday afternoon, the main throng of car owners and former associates will be quartered and awaiting the huge parade that officially kicks off the opening of the meeting.

Headed by the Auburn High School band, the huge contingent of Auburns, Cords and Duesenbergs will start from in front of the factory and encircle the downtown area. With space reserved around the court house, the parade will terminate as the cars arrange themselves in appropriate groups for concourse judging.

A gala feast for Saturday evening will feature awards for each division and class; trophies, cups and ribbons.

Talks and reminiscences from former personnel and selected films will be the treat for those attending. Far into the night, the quiet groups will chat and pore over mementoes and recollections and the lobby for the Auburn Hotel will be

Sunday is usually given over to leisurely breakfasting, last pictures and unhurried preparations for the trip home.

Many of the faithful will bear New York, Canadian and Texas license plates and for them Monday comes all too soon.

The group on the front steps of the hotel grows gradually smaller and a little more quiet as fond memories wave farewell.

With a feeling of quite pleasant sadness the unspoken wish in everyone’s heart is that this will be repeated again and again.

Museum adds vintage sprint racer to display The Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum is exhibiting a vintage sprint car.

Built by Floyd “Pop” Dreyer, a former Duesenberg employee, the car raced extensively throughout the Midwest from the 1930s until the 1950s. The car has been restored to its original 1938 configuration, and its authenticity has been certified by the Antique Automobile Club of America.

Included in the restoration are the original body, narrow, lightweight frame and rear tires.

The body is 19 inches at its widest point. The engine produces 200 horsepower and has a top speed of approximately 125 mph.

The sprint car is on loan from James Kruse of Moorestown, New Jersey. It is housed in the Terence E. Adderley Gallery of Racers & Record-Setters.
