Fairgrounds the site of 31st annual Apple Festival

KENDALLVILLE — It’s no surprise to regular Apple Festival of Kendallville attendees that the city’s population swells by 15,000 to 20,000 during the event weekend.

Organizers estimate in excess of 20,000 people attend the festival at the Noble County Fairgrounds the first weekend in October each year. The midway is usually elbow-to-elbow with people.

Many local and area residents invite their relatives from all over the country to Kendallville for the festival and family reunions.

They come hungry. They come looking for entertainment. They come to purchase crafts and antiques. They come to watch and learn from artisans how to weave and spin wool, quilt, crochet, knit and carve wood. They come to unleash their young children in games and activities in the Dekko Children’s Pioneer Craft Village.

The 31st annual Apple Festival of

Kendallville is Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1-2. Saturday’s hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday’s hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Parking at the fairgrounds is $5, with entry through the Dowling Street gate and exit through the Park Avenue gate.

Free parking is available at Fairview Plaza, east of the fairgrounds. A free shuttle bus service will run both days between Fairview Plaza and the fairgrounds. The last shuttle on Saturday is at 6 p.m., and the last shuttle on Sunday is at 5 p.m.

Camping is available at the Bixler Lake campground (347-1064). No camping is allowed at the fairgrounds.

Festival information will be available at the shuttle bus stop. The festival information booth will be located in front of the fairgrounds Merchants Building.

Hundreds of volunteers, from festival committee members to vendors, make the festival a success each year. They will be dressed in special festival shirts and pioneer-like garb depicting the festival theme.

Food is an obvious attraction.

Organizing committee members advise festivalgoers to try a variety of hot and cold items, and be patient because the lines can be long for the most popular and sometimes unique foods. There 37 food vendors this year selling everything apple — apple fritters, apple burgers, apple pies, apple cheeseburgers, apple cobbler with ice cream, apple pizza, caramel apples, apple syrup on pancakes, apple cider, apple butter, apple dumplings and, yes, apples.

Other food items include: New Brunswick stew, pumpkin whoopie pies, pulled pork sandwiches, haystack potatoes, corn on the cob, Indian fry bread, smothered pork chops, pork tenderloins, elephant ears, pork cracklins, chicken and noodles, smoked turkey legs, ham and beans, beef and noodles and chicken wings.

For entertainment, the popular Raise A Ruckus free cabaret featuring East Noble Theatre and show choir students will have performances at 10:45 a.m., noon, 1:15 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. each day. All performances will feature Kendallville’s reigning Miss Indiana Brianna DeCamp and Kendallville’s reigning Miss Indiana’s Outstanding Teen Jordan Axel.

Free entertainment is scheduled all day each day on the Open Prairie Stage, Settlers Roost and the Dekko Little Pioneer Stage in Floral Hall. Entertainers include the Applesauce Quartet, Hastey Pudding

Puppets, Leipers Fork Bluegrass, Inclognito Cloggers, Village Dulcimer Players, Liberty Baptist Singers and Drop the Dawg.

There will be 90 craft vendors in three buildings north of the Show Arena selling their wares that can be unique holiday gifts.

Festivalgoers should bring a bag or two.

Several antique vendors will offer items for sale in the Antique Building, and open air demonstrations include making pure maple syrup and purses, creating pottery and beeswax candles and treadle sewing.

Located between the Antique Building and Open Air Demonstration Building will be The Wheelmen Antique Bicycle Display and Demonstrations. The national nonprofit organization is dedicated to keeping alive the heritage of American cycling and promoting the restoration and riding early cycles.

At the Dekko Children’s Pioneer Village, youths make corn husk dolls and tin punch art, dip candles, ride ponies, go through a straw maze, cross a rope bridge, swing around a may pole and play apple bowling.

Contests this year include apple pie baking on Saturday, with entries registered between 9-10:30 a.m. followed by judging; ladies skillet throw Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m.; frog flippin’ both days at 12 noon; apple toss both days at 2 p.m.; and the annual tomahawk throw Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

The Primitive Area southwest of Floral Hall is where visitors can watch blacksmiths at work and barter for wooden toys, beaded jewelry, scrimshaws and leather goods.

Visitors can spend the whole day at the festival eating pancakes and biscuits and gravy for breakfast, wander among the festival sights, sit down for a lunch and then more wandering and buying.

KENDALLVILLE — There will be 37 food vendors serving a variety of hot and cold food at the 31st Annual Apple Festival of Kendallville Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1-2, at the Noble County Fairgrounds.

All of the favorites will be back, including apple fritters (reportedly more than 7,000), apple burgers, pork burgers, haystack potatoes and cheese, chicken and noodles, baked potatoes with a variety of toppings, beef and noodles, hot chicken sandwiches, roast hog sandwiches, tenderloin sandwiches, buffalo burgers, smoked turkey legs and apple dumplings.

Festivalgoers arriving early can have breakfast before taking in the entertainment at three different sites, wandering the craft area’s three buildings, watching artisans demonstrate their skills and participating in contests like the skillet throw, tomahawk throw and apple toss. Foodies should be patient in their search for the best festival food item. The popular stops will have long lines.

Many of the food vendors are local and area nonprofit organizers and use the proceeds for scholarships and philanthropic endeavors.

Admission is free to the festival with parking $5 at the fairgrounds. Vehicles should enter through the Dowling Street gate and exit the Park Avenue gate.

Free off-site parking is available in Fairview Plaza. A free shuttle bus service will run between Fairview Plaza and the fairgrounds with the last shuttle at 6 p.m.

KENDALLVILLE — Entertainment at this year’s Apple Festival of Kendallville is getting an extra dose of hometown.

It’s been a tradition over the weekend of activities to have Miss Indiana and Miss Indiana’s Outstanding Teen take part in East Noble Theatre’s Raise A Ruckus shows, and this year is especially noteworthy because both crowns belong to Kendallville natives.

Miss Indiana’s Outstanding Teen Jordan Axel and Miss Indiana Miss Indiana Brianna DeCamp will Brianna take part in the shows, DeCamp which take place both Saturday and Sunday at 10:45 a.m., noon, 1:15 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:45 p.m.

Growing up in Kendallville, where she went to the festival each year, DeCamp feels honored take part again after previously participating in the Raise A Ruckus show as Miss Indiana’s Outstanding Teen in 2011.

And there’s a certain fulfillment in coming back to perform as Miss Indiana.

“Participating in Raise A Ruckus was one of the first things on my mind. There’s a lot of pride that revolves around being the hometown girl, wearing the crown, wearing the Miss Indiana sash and then getting to participate in Raise A Ruckus and walk around Apple Festival,” DeCamp said. “I’m really excited for it.”

Along with Raise A Ruckus, acts and shows will be performed constantly throughout the weekend for visitors.

For more than 30 years the Apple Festival of Kendallville has been a part of the community, with one of the cornerstones of the event being the craft area.

This year, 90 vendors will be on hand for the festival, which takes place the first weekend in October.

This number is about the same as in years past, Apple Festival Committee crafts chair Darlene Geisel said.

Of those 90, the vast majority are returning vendors, while about 15 are new to the Apple Festival, Geisel explained.

About half of all of the vendors are professional crafters, while about half are what Geisel calls “hobby crafters,” who

sell their handmade creations as more of a part-time job.

The focus on handmade is key, Geisel said.

“Consumer items are not allowed.

Everything is to be handmade by (the vendors themselves),” she explained.

Vendors go through a thorough screening process to try to keep mass-produced items out, submitting an application and photos or slides of their work that must be approved by the festival committee.

This insistence on handmade items goes back to the core of what the Apple Festival is about, Geisel said.

“The festival was founded on the premise on educating visitors about pioneer heritage and settlement,” she said. “It’s

about teaching people the way our pioneers did things versus today.”

That also explains while all the vendors will be donning clothing resembling that from the 1860s.

“All participants are to be in costume,” Geisel said firmly.

Geisel said she tries to make sure there’s a good variety of offerings in the craft arena. Visitors this year will see vendors selling everything from furniture to sewn items to jewelry and much more.

“As long as things are handmade I try to give people the opportunity to participate,” Geisel said.

The craft area also offers items for a variety of budgets.

“We have everything from (those

costing) a few dollars to more expensive items,” Geisel said, again referencing that everything is available in the craft area, from soaps to metal art.

Geisel said the craft area remains a popular part of the Apple Festival.

“Some people, that’s all they come for,” she said.

Bunni Kraushaar agreed, writing on Facebook that the handcrafted items were one of her favorite parts of the annual event.

The craft area will be located in the swine, steer and mini barns, and vendors must be open the entire time the festival is going on. The festival takes place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Primitive Area will see influx of campers

KENDALLVILLE — Watch out for flying hatchets — and frying pans.

Outside of the occasional flying object, the Primitive Area at the Apple Festival of Kendallville is the place to be to find a little old-timey fun.

And if you’ve gone every year, you may notice the return of a couple exhibitors who haven’t visited in a couple festivals.

The pioneer-period-themed section of the festival will be back again this year, with several craftsmen showing off their skills, vendors selling handcrafted goods and role players dressed in costumes and camping off

A few vendors have had to drop out this year, but their spots are being filled by a a couple exhibitors who are back, as well as an increase in the number of re-enactors camping at the fairgrounds.

“We’ve got a couple of people coming back this year that we haven’t had for a few years. We’ve got the Blue Line Coffee coming back. We still have our historic blacksmith in George and Josh Clark.

We’ve had the honey people here that’s locally grown, and if people want to come in and see a little bit of what camp life was back in the late 1700s, early 1800s, we’ve got a few more campers,” Primitive Area

A few vendors have had to drop out within the last week, but Jansen is trying to find a couple last-minute replacements, including a wood carver he hopes will set up for the two-day festival.

The number of historic campers is increasing this year. While they don’t have any specific demonstrations, they set the atmosphere and are always willing to chat and share some information about the time period.

And they’re always cooking something, Jansen said.

“With some of the campers, see what they’ve got cooking over the fires. A lot of

times it’s something unusual,” Jansen said.

The annual contests — the ladies skillet throw and tomahawk throw — are back again this year on the north end of the Primitive Area.

Ladies compete first, at 1:30 p.m.

Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday, to give a iron skillet a hurl. The tomahawk throw follows at 2 p.m. Saturday and 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

Contestants need to be in costume to participate.

Visitors to the Primitive Area can also hear a little musical entertainment, too. The Village Dulcimer Players will perform at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday as well as 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Back by popular demand The Apple Festival of Kendallville will offer several apple baking contests on Saturday, Oct. 1, in the Open Air Demonstration Building next to the Merchants Building at the Noble County Fairgrounds.

Entries will be accepted starting at 9 a.m. Judging will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m. Entries will be auctioned off at 1 p.m., and prizes will be awarded to the top two entries in each of the following categories: • Apple pie baking, 5-20 years old; • Apple pie baking, 21-40 years old; • Apple pie baking, 41 and over; • Apple pie baking, men; • Quick breads, muffins and biscuits; • Cakes and cookies; and • Other.

No real amphibians are ever in danger at this popular Apple Festival of Kendallville contest.

Frog Flippin’ is for kids 12 years of age and under, and it will be held twice during the festival weekend at noon Saturday, Oct. 1, and Sunday, Oct. 2.

Contestants each get three frogs and three attempts to see how far they can send that frog sailing.

The Apple Toss contest is fairly new to the Apple Festival, but still popular and lots of fun. Contestants will receive three attempts to get the apple through the hole.

The one with the most successful attempts will be the top winner.

The Apple Toss is also for children 12 years of age and under and will be held twice during the weekend at 2 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday.

The Apple Rings will be held at 10 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

All contests are located in the Children’s Area. Registration begins at the same

location 30 minutes before the contest is scheduled to begin. Prizes will be awarded in three age categories: 4-5 years, 6-8 years and 9-12 years.

See how far you can toss a skillet A Ladies Skillet Toss will be held at the 31st annual Apple Festival of Kendallville.

The contest will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and again Sunday at 11 a.m.

Both contests will be held at the north end of the Primitive Area. Registration begins at the contest site 30 minutes before the scheduled starting time.

The skillet will be provided and prizes will be awarded to those throwing the skillet the greatest distance. Participants must be in pioneer costume.

Take your shot with Tomahawk Throw The Apple Festival of Kendallville will hold a Tomahawk Throw contest two times during the upcoming festival weekend.

The first contest will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m., and the second will take place Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Both contests will be held at the north end of the Primitive Area. Registration begins at the contest site 30 minutes before the contest begins.

Different contests each day will test the participants’ skills and luck in throwing a tomahawk and knife. Prizes will be awarded. Contestants must be in pioneer costume to participate.
