he Angola area is best known as Northern Indiana lakes country, and the laid-back lifestyle and access to lake activities and outdoor recreation is one of the top reasons people choose to live here. On the Cover Photo credits: This year the Steuben County Soldier’s Monument is turning 100. The Monument was erected in 1917 as a tribute to the 1,280 men from Steuben County who fought in the Civil War. A special celebration is being planned for Sept. 20 to celebrate the Monument’s centennial. A committee organized by the Steuben County Tourism Bureau is planning the event, which will be held in conjunction with the annual Cruise to the Monument in downtown Angola. A variety of activities are planned for the centennial celebration, including a salute to all veterans of Steuben County. Chamber Programs & Initiatives
W
hen the Angola Chamber last relocated to new offices, we discovered many interesting things during the move. One of the most fascinating items was a scrapbook from the founding of the Chamber in 1937, compiled by Jo R. Bakstad (who was later elected its first president). The brittle, yellowed papers with deckled edges document not only the purpose and objectives for which the Chamber was formed, but even more, convey the spirit and passion with which the original campaign committee set out to unite business interests in the City of Angola. 80 years ago, this small group of businessmen and civic leaders reached out to their peers to come together with this shared vision: “The new Chamber of Commerce movement is the outgrowth of a desire to better Angola— to promote local advantages. No other agency exists for this object— so important to this city.” They distributed pledge cards asking for commitment: “I believe in ANGOLA— my city— and want it to grow and prosper. I believe that

its promotion can best be done through cooperation.” Although the AACoC of today has evolved greatly to a modern organization, at the roots our mission is still the same. How we carry out that mission reflects the huge advancements in technology and the changing needs of businesses. Our purpose, as stated in our bylaws — The Angola Area Chamber of Commerce is organized to promote and advance the civic, commercial, educational, industrial, economic, agricultural, and recreational interests of the Angola Area; to promote integrity and justice in business and professional activities; to foster and maintain high ethical standards in social and business relations; to provide a forum for full and free discussion of public interest matters, and to provide a medium for dissemination of information about the community — is essentially the same, and as important, as it was to our founders so many years ago.
The Angola Chamber of today is a multifaceted organization that strives to serve the needs of the diverse businesses that exist in our region. The Chamber: • Organizes networking events for members including our monthly mixer, Business After Hours, and annual Golf Outing • Recognizes top businesses and professionals with our Excellence in Business (the “Ebbies”) Awards Banquet and Business Showcase in March each year • Facilitates a local presence for the Small Business Development Center to offer free consulting services for new businesses and small businesses who wish to expand • Serves as an information conduit for important State legislative updates that affect businesses; the Chamber also hosts Meet the Candidates events and Third House Forums so that citizens can educate themselves on

History of the Angola Area Chamber of Commerce

he city of Angola, the county seat of Steuben County, is located at the intersection of U.S. 20 and State Road 127 in Northeast Indiana. The City of Angola was first settled by pioneers

from Angola, New York. Angola was platted by Thomas Gale and Cornelius Gilmore on June 28, 1838, and incorporated as a village that same year. In the center of the city there is a soldier’s monument which
pays homage to the 1,278 Steuben County residents who fought during the Civil War. The monument was constructed in 1017. Angola will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the monument with a ceremony this fall.

Affordable leisure activities abound: Carnegie Public Library of Steuben County, which celebrated their 100th anniversary in 2015, has outstanding programs for children and young adults, as well as all the newest best-selling books in fiction and nonfiction. If you like cars and action Angola Motorsport Speedway offers events throughout the summer season. The recently constructed 4-mile Angola Bike Trail, which connects Commons Park to the north side of Angola, (and will eventually connect to Pokagon State Park) is designated for foot or bicycle traffic. Angola’s three municipal parks— Commons Park, Firemen’s Park, and Nature Park— have amenities including four baseball/ softball diamonds, a soccer field, three playgrounds, volleyball courts and six picnic shelters available for rent. Angola Parks and Recreation staff coordinate the Summer Recreation Program, which offers free sports day camps for ages 7-14 to keep kids active when school is out. The newly restored iconic Brokaw Movie Theatre, originally built in 1931, shows first-run movies with the latest technology, while bringing back the original glory of the design and history of the building.

Contributed by Isaac R Lee, Executive Director, Steuben County Economic Development Corporation Over the last year, the Steuben County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) and the Enterprise Center experienced the true definition of change. John F. Kennedy said, “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” History has prepared us to take advantage of all the opportunities that 2017 and beyond will present to us. As we consider the future, the EDC realized that we needed to align our assets with our four main priorities below. These areas of concentration are not exclusive but they will drive much of the decisions that will be made by our organization for years to come. Area of concentration for 2017: • The role of the EDC within the community has exponentially grown with the major focus on Business Retention and Expansion efforts • Attraction of new businesses will rely more on data insight and be more precise on how we attract new businesses to the county • The Enterprise Center will align all its programs and benefits behind the new brand; LEARN, CONNECT, THRIVE. • Private Sector involvement, engagement, and investment will be vital for the organization to accomplish our mission and Page 10
vision for all communities within Steuben County Annually, the EDC will be completing the Business Retention and Expansion program will all the industries within Steuben County. It is in this process that all other things will flow. This critical process is where 80% of all economic development activities derive from. So, it is critical that we take care of the industries that are here right now. This includes assessing the needs of those employers as well as assisting in finding
With attraction, we plan on using a precision method of attracting business to the area. This process includes aligning our community assets around industries that make sense for our community. This includes industries in Advance Manufacturing, Distribution and Logistics, Food and Beverage, Information Technology, and Alternative Energy. Secondary industries include Medical Device and Design and Craftsman. Through the implementation of The Enterprise Center, we are active participants in workforce development within Steuben County and the region. Workforce Development processes and success come from many partners within a region. The EDC is

most successful when we work with Trine University, Ivy Tech Community College, Freedom Academy and others. These collaborations help us to identify what technology and machinery we need to fill our Training Center. As we view ourselves as a supplement to the process, we are also prepared to be a pioneer in new ways to train and skill-up our workforce, increasing human capital knowledge, and building a better quality of life for those using the facility. We are also grateful to the Steuben County Industrial Guild for their partnership. Finally, for the above items to truly impact the communities in the magnitude that they can, it takes equal partnership from both the private and public sectors. Both monetarily and through support of our programs and initiatives, it will be critical that we work side by side for the betterment of Steuben County.
In closing, we are extremely grateful for the support for both the SCEDC and the Enterprise Center. We still have a lot more work to do and your help would be greatly appreciated. We are positioned well to expand our current business footprint within

RISE, Inc located in Angola provides a school to work transition service in conjunction with Northeast Indiana Special Education Cooperative allowing students enrolled in the school system the opportunity to attend RISE and interact and socialize outside of the classroom. Students are able to learn to transition from going to school to working in a work environment or attending classes that are similar to a college class.
Higher Education
For 130 years, Trine University has been an integral member of the Angola and Steuben County communities. Trine brings thousands of visitors to Angola each year for free events including college visit days, athletic events, entertainment opportunities and educational and cultural programs. Trine University offers more than 40 programs that include undergraduate, graduate, and adult student degrees. Ivy Tech Community College Northeast is located in Fort Wayne, and maintains remote classroom facilities in Ashley, Indiana. Freedom Academy, located in Kendallville, is a private, not-for-profit adult continuing education organization that provides high-quality, cost-effective, practical and relevant instruction; working with individual employers, classes can be held on location or at their facility in Kendallville. In addition, the City of Angola Training Center provides a local resource for adult continuing education. Partnering with the Freedom Academy, classes held at the training center are based on specific needs of local employers.

Cameron Memorial Community Hospital In December 2014, Cameron Memorial Community Hospital opened the doors to their new facility, created to focus on the concept of wellness and healing. All the features in the 13-acre hospital campus, such as the flooring, furniture, color selection and landscaping, were designed to create a relaxing environment to promote healing and wellness for patients, visitors and the community. CMCH is an independent, not-for-profit, 25-bed community hospital located in Angola. Cameron offers a wide variety of services to a regional population of approximately 30,000 in northeast Indiana as well as northwest Ohio and southern Michigan. Cameron’s total care team includes primary care physicians, visiting specialists, surgeons, nurses and other healthcare professionals who are highly skilled and dedicated to providing the highest quality, safest care. The Emergency Department, which is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by specially-trained emergency physicians and staff, has ratings in the top 3% nationally for patient satisfaction. The Medical Office Building Specialty Clinic, a 52,000 square foot, 4-story building connected on two levels to Cameron MCH, is the home to several medical practices and services, as well as the Business Office for CMCH in the basement level. The facility was built to provide office space for more specialists here in Steuben County. The proximity to the hospital allows patients easy access to multiple services in essentially one location. The Regional Cancer Care Center of Angola is located adjacent to Cameron Hospital. The Cancer Center provides patients with some of the most advanced cancer treatments in the region. Sophisticated technology, access to new treatments and medications, and physicians and staff dedicated to caring for the cancer patient are just some of what make cancer care at the Regional Cancer Care Center so powerful. Saturday mornings and evenings, with night time illuminations scheduled on both Friday and Saturday. Also in the month of July, the Lake James Association, in cooperation with Indiana Chapter of the Antique & Classic Boat Society, coordinates the Antique & Classic Boat and Car Show. The show is located at the old Boat House—Marina on Lake James near the Jimmerson Lake bridge. The boats that are on display are wood and fiberglass and range in ages from the 1940s to the 1970s. There is also a display by local artists, food, beverages, and live music. This year’s event will be July 29. Angola’s newest cultural attraction is the T. Furth Center for Performing Arts and Ryan Concert Hall, part of the Trine University campus. The Furth Center provides a prominent place for the arts in the lives of residents and students of Trine University. The $7.8 million facility opened on May 2, 2014, and blends a dream with history and tradition to create a vibrant cultural identity for northeast Indiana. The Furth Center preserves a historical Angola landmark, the former Angola Christian Church, while creating a beautiful, functional space for music and theatrical performances for the community and a learning center with the latest technology for Trine’s music and drama students. Performances and presentations thus far have spanned genres— from the Fort Wayne Philharmonic to Michael Bolton to Trine student music ensembles to the Distinguished Speaker Series with notable personalities including Lou Holtz and this year’s Trine graduation commencement speaker, Todd Young, U.S. Senator from Indiana.

Now open is the newly restored iconic Brokaw Movie Theatre, originally built in 1931, which will show first-run movies with the latest technology. Just 20 minutes north is Tibbits Opera House. Built in 1882, Tibbits Opera House is the Center for the Arts and Entertainment in Coldwater, Michigan. You can enjoy year-round entertainment from professional theatre and concerts to community events and children’s theatre.
Beyond the exquisite facade is an intimate 500-seat theatre with excellent acoustics, rich in history and ambiance. Painting with a Twist classes are held at local venues throughout the year and at their studio in Fort Wayne. he Angola Area Chamber of Commerce created the Young Professionals Network of Steuben County in April of 2013 as an important investment in the future of Angola: this is an organization which seeks to attract and retain modern, innovative thinkers who will invest in the area, strengthen the local economy, care for the community, and define Angola’s future with the next generation of leadership. Now in its fourth full year, YPN exists under the umbrella of the Angola Chamber to create avenues for members, aged 21-40, to develop their professional networks, connecting them with other professionals to learn from their experiences, better understand corporate culture, expand their leadership skills, and deepen their roots in their community. YPN offers monthly leadership development seminars and events designed to give participants the opportunity to exchange ideas, grow professionally and share common interests while gaining an insider’s view of the regional business scene. Members of YPN attend social, philanthropic, cultural and professional development opportunities throughout the year. With nearly 60 members representing all facets of business and industry, YPNs are making an impact on the community. From the Page 20

100s of volunteer hours contributed, to serving on nonprofit boards of directors, to recognition with awards for excellence in their fields, this group of high-achievers are giving back even more than what the Chamber and their employers have invested in them. Nominations for membership are accepted at any time. The Leadership Development seminars begin in September (activities
roughly follow the academic calendar). Nominees should be submitted by their employer, who must be a Chamber member in good standing. Additional information can be found on the AACoC’s website, as well as the YPN of Steuben County’s Facebook page. A mailing will go out in early July to all Chamber members, giving them the opportunity to nominate their top young professionals for the program.

Built at the turn of the 20th century, it is a living testament of our city’s journey from humble beginnings to its current state, pointing to an even brighter future ahead, with new shops and businesses adding to its historic charm. Second floor housing is currently being built in historic downtown, creating living spaces for those looking for distinctive housing in the hub of Angola as our community continues to grow. We’re also working to help better train our workforce for an ever changing world. The Angola Training Center located on W. Mill St. holds electrical, industrial maintenance and robotics classes through Freedom Academy and has been well received by our industrial community. The Enterprise Center on S. Wayne St. is making great strides in its development of training facilities and offices. Welding and CNC equipment is available for on-site training at the Enterprise Center and space is available for rent to budding entrepreneurs.

ore than 101 lakes can be found in Steuben County, which provides limitless opportunities for outdoor fun and water sports, and is one of the most notable features of our region. With the natural beauty of the area combined with the many lakes, Angola and the surrounding area draws 1.8 million visitors annually. But residents of the Angola area can enjoy every day what visitors only get a glimpse of when they vacation here: boating, swimming, water sports, fishing, and enjoying tranquil sunsets over the calm lake waters. Pokagon State Park, and the newly opened Trine State Recreation Area, offer a combined 1500-acres of hiking trails, beaches, a nature center, boat rentals, and guided horseback trails. Cold weather activities include cross-country ski trails, ice fishing, and the only refrigerated toboggan run in the Midwest, with a quarter-mile twin track and speeds that have been recorded as fast as 42 mph. links will be happy to know that Angola’s three 18-hole golf courses offer very different experiences in design, scenery, and challenges. All three are open to the public and offer several membership categories as well. Glendarin Hills Golf Club’s course was designed in a resort
style, and amenities include electric carts equipped with GPS, driving range, pro shop and grille room. Lake James Golf Club, with rolling terrain, water hazards and sand to challenge every shot, requires you to be accurate to score well. Lake James Golf Club is connected to Mulligan’s

Outdoor Recreation Restaurant & Pub, which has a full menu to enjoy before or after your round, and is a frequent social gathering spot after league play. Zollner Golf Course, a championship course on the campus of Trine University, includes a driving range, large putting green, short range with practice bunker, fully stocked golf shop. With its many elevation changes, Zollner is truly a thinking player’s golf course. Recent new bunkers and reconfigured fairways offer even more interest and challenge.

Cameron Memorial Community Hospital had its roots in two Angola hospitals. Cameron Memorial Hospital was founded in 1926 by Dr. Don F. Cameron. Elmhurst Hospital was established by Dr. Lester L. Eberhart in 1945. In 1972 the two hospitals were merged as one hospital, with the combined facility located at its present site at 416 East Maumee Street in Angola, Indiana. Cameron Hospital is a 25-bed Critical Access general community hospital. It is not governmental, and there is no tax support. Cameron is a not-for-profit facility. 2017 looks like another great year for our community. The City of Angola received an INDOT Community Crossings grant for $1,000,000.00 in 2016. We plan on using this grant to put a road, sewer, water and fiber optics into our potential shovel ready tech park on the southeast quadrant of I-69 and US HWY 20 to accommodate development and buildings to house 21st Century industry. We continue to receive calls from proven developers who express interest in doing projects in our community and I expect to see quite a bit of growth in all sectors of our community in the next three to five years. Extensive planning and engineering are being done to make our community stronger. Our city departments are doing a fantastic job of providing the services our citizens expect. Clean and well paved streets; clean, safe water coming into our homes and businesses; limbs, leaves, brush and garbage are picked up regularly keeping our city looking its best. We recycle waste materials into compost for our community and maintain our sewer system in the best operational capacity by discharging clean, safe water back into our streams. Our Police and Fire personnel respond quickly to emergency calls keeping our community safe and our Park staff strives to keep our trails and community parks enjoyable for our citizens and visitors. Steuben County Monument turns 100 this year BY MIKE MARTURELLO mmarturello@kpcmedia.com ANGOLA — Columbia and the boys are turning 100 this year. To celebrate the occasion, an observance will be held on Sept. 20 in conjunction with the Angola Cruise-In, a time when classic and specialty vehicles are on display. It is also about the only time of the year when the Public Square is closed to traffic for an extended period of time. The Steuben County Soldier’s Monument was built and dedicated in 1917. The effort came at a time when the community was sending its sons off to another war, the War to end all Wars, World War I. As histories of the community boast, Steuben County was never shy about sending its men to war. For the Civil War, for which the monument honors, Steuben sent more men per capital than any other county in Indiana. It is said that the Steuben County Monument was one of the final ones if not the last of some 200 Civil War monuments erected in the U.S.

to small cards to commemorate the occasion. Over the years, Columbia, who stands at the top of the monument some 70 feet above ground, and the soldiers at each corner — representing cavalry, army, navy and infantry — weathered, their pressed copper oxidizing in the elements.
The erection of this monument to the Civil War came with little fanfare. Sure, there was a dedication on the mound, later called Monument Place — it wasn’t the Public Square for nearly 75 years later.
In a joint effort between Steuben County and the city of Angola — the county owns the monument and the city owns the ground upon which sits, the mound — the monument was restored in 1993.
There was a dance and a lively celebration, though the local newspapers of the day didn’t make much notice of the event, other than to announce the upcoming dedication to the monument designed by a Mansfield, Ohio, architect and built by E.M. Hetzler, whose day job was to create grave monuments; he went on to be elected Angola’s mayor in the next election.
In the fall of 2015, Angola refurbished the mound itself, adding new electric, sound and irrigation infrastructure, as well as landscaping and a new walk around the peremeter. Each year the Angola Garden Club plants flowers around the mound to make it look nice for the summer season.

Chamber’s roots more than 100 years old The Angola Area Chamber of Commerce has deep roots in the community, tracing itself back to the turn of the 20th century before its founding as the chamber as it is known today. “It is amazing to think about the respect these men must have had for the City of Angola. The pride in their community must have been very profound to give personal time and commitment in order to sell the idea, promote it and to protect the future economic growth of Angola by having a vision … and by turning that vision into action,” says current information from the Angola Chamber. The original chamber was first known as the Steuben County Commercial Club, which was organized in 1910, and had Ezra L. Dodge as its first president. The chamber later evolved into the Chamber of Commerce of Steuben County, in 1922, and had Raymond E. Willis as its first president. Willis later went on to become on of Indiana’s U.S. senators. This chamber was highly involved in procuring land for what would Page 46
become Pokagon State Park. In due time, says information provided by the Angola Area Chamber of Commerce, the foundation was laid for the formation of the Angola Chamber of Commerce. This new chamber was established for the purpose of promoting the resources and increasing the business of Angola and was launched in November 1937. A temporary board of six directors chosen at a public meeting had conducted an in-depth study into possible ways of supplying Angola with an effective agency devoted to citywide promotion. Laurence Vaughn, of Michigan City, an experienced commercial organization executive for many years and well known in Indiana, was hired to direct the campaign and to draw the movement together. Local businessmen supplied his compensation. Soon after Vaughn’s study results were released, a membership campaign began. Dues were $10 per year. The temporary board
of directors began six departments, each with definite responsibilities for community promotion and each made up of volunteers. The six departments were: lake resort promotion; retail trade promotion; education and civic affairs; industrial promotion; agricultural development, and chamber maintenance. When the chamber was finalized it was the end of December. This group of amazing businessmen recruited 122 new members out of a goal of 150 in two month’s time. The 122 members elected the first official board of directors. The “History of Steuben County 1955,” by Harvey Morley, a former county chamber president, says the Angola chamber was finally established in 1940. That same history says the Angola Chamber of Commerce was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1951. It was later named the Angola Area Chamber of Commerce to reflect the growth of the Angola business community beyond the city’s borders.
