Holiday events planned LIGONIER — The Ligonier Fire Department and the city’s Chamber of Commerce will present Breakfast with Santa at the fire station on Saturday, Dec. 7 in Ligonier. Serving hours for breakfast of pancakes and sausage will be 7-11 a.m. Santa will be on hand from 9-11 a.m., and all area children are invited to visit and receive a gift bag from the chamber. Donations will be accepted for breakfast with all funds going to to the fire department’s adopted families for the holidays.

At the 16th annual Festival of Trees held Saturday at the Kendallville Event Center, this Christmas tree designed and built by employees of Avalon Village in Ligonier received a secondplace award from the judges. Ligonier man dies in U.S. 33 wreck LIGONIER — One man was killed and another seriously injured in a crash on U.S. 33 last Wednesday evening, Nov. 20, the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department said. Mario Alberto Reyes, 25, of Ligonier died in the crash. His passenger, Vincente Martinez, 23, of Ligonier was airlifted by helicopter to Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne, with

serious head injuries. Police reports said officers initially were called to the scene on U.S. 33 north of Elkhart C.R. 50 at 5:41 p.m. on a report of drag racing. The crash scene is five miles west of Ligonier, and the Ligonier Police Department was the first to arrive at the scene, reports said. Reyes’ 2008 Dodge car was traveling southbound on U.S. 33

when it crossed the center line and ran off the road into a ditch, deputies said. It flipped several times before stopping in a field east of U.S. 33. Reyes was wearing a seatbelt, deputies said; Martinez was not, and he was ejected from the car. The case remains under investigation by the Elkhart County Crash Investigation Team. Reports from the scene indicate the other vehicle in the reported drag race may have been an older model sport-utility vehicle, possibly a Cadillac Escalade. A report on Martinez’s was not available as of Wednesday.

Ligonier mans pleads guilty on drug charge

LIGONIER — The Owen’s Supermarket in Ligonier is a drop-off point for a “Coats for Kids” coat drive sponsored by the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of DeKalb, LaGrange, Noble and Steuben counties. Owen’s and its parent company, Kroger are helping the coat drive along with a pair of Fort Wayne television stations. Barrels have been placed at Owen’s in Ligonier and Scott’s in Kendallville. Coats are desperately needed for children and adults, as well as hats, mittens and scarves. If you have any gently used coats, or would like to donate a new coat, please bring them either Owen’s in Ligonier, or Scott’s in Kendallville. If you need a coat, they are available to anyone in the four-county area, and can be picked up anytime Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.at the RSVP office in Auburn. Coats can be picked up at the RSVP office located at 107 West 5th Street, Auburn.

Kindergarten students at West Noble Primary School enjoyed an early Thanksgiving feast in their hallway on Tuesday. The students were from the classrooms of Miss Clore, Mrs. Custer, Mrs. Deel and Miss Hanna. The youngsters were dressed for the occasion and enjoyed a meal provided by the school’s cooks. The menu included turkey and gravy with mashed potatoes, green beans, peaches, pumpkin bars and milk.

ALBION — Two men could face 15-year prison sentences after admitting Friday in Noble Superior Court I that they dealt drugs. Juan Jose Rodriguez, 32, of Ligonier and Chad N. Smith, 39, of Kendallville, each pleaded guilty to a Class B felony drug charge in unrelated cases Friday. The plea agreement in each case calls for 15 years of prison time. In both cases, the Class B felony charge would be reduced from a Class A felony offense as part of the plea agreement. Rodriguez pleaded guilty to dealing cocaine, a Class B felony. He admitted possessing cocaine Dec. 12, 2012, in Noble County with intent to deliver it. Court records show Rodriguez possessed the cocaine in the 100 block of Bowery Street, Ligonier. Police found him with the cocaine and currency that had been used in undercover drug purchases by the Goshen Police Department and Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department. A plea agreement in Rodriguez’s case calls for him to be sentenced to 15 years in prison, all to be served. Sentencing in his case was set for Jan. 21, 2014.
