Communities There’s always something happening in Kendallville. It may not be the county seat, but as Noble County’s biggest municipality, Kendallville is home to many of the county’s attractions, restaurants, shops and events. If you’re into unique attractions, the Mid-America Windmill Museum on the south side of town displays dozens of historic windmills, including several that were previously produced in the city. If you’re into nature, take a stroll along placid Bixler Lake, or bring a rod and line to do a little fishing, or grab your swim trunks to get in the

water at one of the public beaches during the summer. And if you’re into community events, Kendallville hosts big get-togethers including the Noble County Community Fair, the annual Tri-State Bluegrass Festival or the fall-theme Kendallville Apple Festival. That’s all on top of summer cruise-ins, downtown events, sports tournaments at the outdoor recreational complex and more. Sitting at the junction of U.S. 6 and S.R. 3, and about 10 miles from Interstate 69, it’s hard not visit Noble County without making a stop in Kendallville.

Communities
The city of Ligonier, located on the west side of Noble County, has a history as culturally diverse and unique as its present. Founded in 1835 by Isaac Cavin, the settlement was built along the banks of the Elkhart River and named after Cavin’s hometown of Ligonier, Pennsylvania. It wasn’t until the railroad was constructed in 1852, that the city began to experience growth, bringing with it entrepreneurs Solomon Mier and Jacob Strauss, Jewish immigrants from Prussia. After they settled into the area, other Jewish people began to follow and between 1852 and 1866, the town’s population grew from 50 to more than 1,000.

Forty years later, the town became known as “Little Jerusalem,” as 300 of its 2,000 inhabitants were Jewish. Another 40 years on, most of the Jewish culture had gone as the settlers set their sights on larger cities like Chicago. The city began to transform in the 1950s, as local businessmen looked to develop its industry, and because of those efforts, Ligonier now boasts a large industrial park on its north side. It’s also led to a new diversification of its population, with more than half of the city’s residents identifying as Hispanic. But more than its business and industry, Ligonier earned recognition statewide as the Safest
City in Indiana the past two years from SafeWise, a safety and home security news organization, based on FBI crime reporting statistics. Over the next three years, it will also be working toward constructing the Strawberry Valley Cultural Trail, a 5-mile loop through downtown connecting the city’s murals, parks, statues and historical landmarks. The path is named after the spot Cavin chose to settle, which was known as the “strawberry valley.” Throughout the year, the city celebrates its history, as well as its present, with the annual Ligonier Marshmallow Festival, which takes place over Labor Day weekend and is named for the former Kidd and Co. marshmallow plant that resided in the city. The 1800s come to life with the Stone’s Trace Pioneer Festival and Regulators Rendezvous every year in September at the historic site at the corner of S.R. 5 and U.S. 33. And during the month of October, families can explore Pumpkin Fantasyland at Fashion Farm, which displays hundreds of pumpkins carved to look like all of the U.S. presidents and storybook and movie characters.

Albion Black Pine Animal Sanctuary
1426 W CR 300 N Black Pine is an award-winning exotic animal sanctuary that provides refuge to displaced, captive-raised exotic animals and educates people about responsible animal care and conservation. The refuge does not buy, sell, breed, trade or use animals for commercial purposes. Black Pine is home to nearly 100 wildcats, bears, foxes, wolves and more. Visitors of all ages are welcome to participate in a variety of tour programs that explore the 18-acre site and introduce the individual animals who have endured past lives as pets, performers and as the products of profiteers. A variety of programs cater to all ages, from toddlers to seniors, with options available year-round. General visitation on a walk-in basis is typically scheduled six days a week from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Guided tours, highly recommended by the staff, are scheduled routinely from May through October.
Private tours by appointment are also available during the off-season. Advanced planning is recommended by visiting www.bpvisit.org or by calling 260.636.7383. Program rates vary, ranging from $4 to $7 for kids, and $8 to $50 for adults. The sanctuary features paved pathways for accessibility and a gift shop on site. Parking is free. Chain O’ Lakes State Park

Kendallville Strand Theater
221 S Main St Built in 1890, the Spencer Opera House opened on Main Street in Kendallville, showing live shows. After being purchased by Robert Hudson in 1928, the theater began to show its first motion pictures. The theater’s changed hands multiple times since and gone through multiple renovations, but the historic venue still shows films today.
