“Resurrection. The Appease Of God’s Wrath.” Have you ever been angry? Has anyone or something provoked you to such anger that it would be rightly called wrath? Of all the human emotions, anger is the one that we tend not to dwell on. We tend to excuse it to any number of reasons ranging from our pets to our favorite sports teams. Yet, have you ever realized that God is One who gets angry? He is a God that is able to be so angered that He calls it wrath. Why would God be a God of wrath without excuse? The object of this wrath is SIN.
The issue, though, is that humankind commits such acts against the God of the Bible, all the time. How then can one rightly appease the wrath of God, which leads to eternal separation from Him? Resurrection Sunday (Easter) answers for us this particular question. We read in Matthew’s account of the crucifixion (Matt. 27:45-46) that darkness covered the land between noon and 3 p.m. Some believe that this was a solar eclipse, but this is impossible since the Passover is always celebrated during a full moon. Hence, this darkness was
God pouring His judgment of sin upon His Son. This is why we next read, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” coming from Jesus’ lips. How do we know that Jesus’ crucifixion was sufficient? Jesus’ raising from the dead that Sunday morning is the evidence that His death appeased the wrath that ought to fall on those who are redeemed. As we gather together to worship, may we remember that it was God’s wrath that Jesus took upon Himself so that the believer may be fully embraced in the loving arms of the Tri-une God.
The primary means of observing this important day is when believers participate together in the Lord’s Supper. As we take the cup, may we be reminded that it was necessary for blood to be shed so that the sin that provokes God’s wrath can be forgiven. Create religious Easter traditions METRO CREATIVE CONNECTION
Easter is on the way, and practicing Christians across the globe have spent the Lenten season preparing for the day when they celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Lent is a season best spent in the company of close friends and family, and the following are a few ways for Christians to celebrate their faith in the weeks leading up to Easter Sunday. • Give Easter eggs a different meaning. Easter eggs are popular among youngsters, and that popularity can be used to teach kids about their faith. Eggs are frequently viewed as a symbol of new life, so parents can use them to show their children how Christ died and was born anew. Eggs can be filled with small items that symbolize something related to Christ’s story. Or they can be left empty to represent the empty tomb after His resurrection. • Eat food that conveys Biblical stories. For Easter dinner, enjoy foods that are mentioned in the Bible. A fish dinner can
convey the story of how Jesus multiplied fish to feed the crowds, or dine on lamb and share the story of Passover. • Participate in church services. Throughout Lent, many parishes offer Easter vigils or specialized services that relate the account of Jesus’ life and subsequent death on the cross. Some churches may recreate realistic stations of the Cross. Employing pageantry to bring biblical stories to life can help young children visualize and better understand the meaning of Easter. • Create a Christ-centered Easter basket. Parents can still fill kids’ Easter baskets with some of the familiar confectionary treats, but those parents who impart lessons about their faith to their kids also can include books about the story of Easter, rosary beads, a crucifix for a child’s room, and maybe a children’s Bible. • Make time for volunteer work. Many families reserve volunteerism for the Christmas season, but Easter also marks

The meaning behind Easter symbols METRO CREATIVE CONNECTION
Easter Sunday is one of the most meaningful days on the Christian calendar. Easter commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe died by crucifixion as a sacrifice to atonement. Many symbols are associated with Easter, and understanding these symbols can help Christians and non-Christians alike gain a stronger grasp of this deeply meaningful Christian day of worship. • Lamb: According to CatholicCulture. org, the lamb represents Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is the Son of God. The lamb can be connected to Jewish Passover, a Jewish holiday that commemorates the liberation of the Israelites from Egyptian slavery. During the celebration of Passover, each Jewish family killed a lamb as a sacrifice. Christians commonly refer to Jesus as the Lamb of God who God sacrificed so Christians’ sins could be forgiven. • Easter eggs: While Easter eggs may
seem like a secular symbol of Easter, their connection to Easter dates back many centuries. CatholicCulture.org notes that the early Christians saw the egg as symbolic of the tomb out of which Christ emerged when he was resurrected. Early Christians even painted Easter eggs, much like parents do with their children today, and even had them blessed and gave them as gifts. Historians believe King Edward I of England, who ruled from 1272 to 1307, dyed boiled eggs and gave them to members of his royal household on Easter. • Clothing: New clothing is another symbol of Easter that traces its origins back further than many Christians may realize. It’s customary for present-day Christians to don their Sunday best when attending Easter Sunday Mass, and the tradition of looking sharp on Easter can be traced to the early Christians, who would wear new white robes for baptisms during Easter services. Eventually, all Easter celebrants began to wear new clothes

during Easter services. • Palm fronds: Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent, taking place one week before Easter Sunday. Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. According to the Gospels, Jesus rode a young donkey into Jerusalem,
where the townspeople threw palms in front of him in homage. That practice was a customary sign of respect in Jerusalem, and today Christians believe the palm is a sign of peace. Palms continue to be distributed to the faithful during Palm Sunday Mass.

Holy Thursday, which falls on the Thursday before Easter Sunday, commemorates The Last Supper of Jesus Christ. During The Last Supper, Jesus, who Christians believe is the Son of God, established the sacrament of Holy Communion. The Last Supper was the final meal Jesus enjoyed with his disciples in Jerusalem, and it was during The Last Supper when Jesus predicted one of those disciples would ultimately betray him. Holy Thursday is sometimes referred to
as “Maundy Thursday,” a reference to the religious rite of maundy, which is the washing of the feet. The Last Supper and the rite of maundy are connected because it was during The Last Supper that Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. Though The Last Supper, during which Jesus gave his disciples bread, telling them it was his body, and wine, telling them it was his blood, is celebrated at every Mass as part of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, Holy Thursday Mass places even greater emphasis on this significant event.
Make Easter eggs last METRO CREATIVE CONNECTION
Families gather on Easter to participate in many different traditions that have been passed down through time. One such tradition is coloring Easter eggs. Millions of eggs are harvested and sold this time of year to be included in Easter festivities. However, soon after egg hunts have been completed and family dinners are brought to the table, those colored eggs may be relegated to the trash. When colored with food-grade dyes, such as those manufactured and readily available around Easter, the eggs remain safe to eat. Colored eggs that are stored in a refrigerator can last
up to a week if their shells remain intact. Peeled eggs may last up to five days, says the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service. Once eggs are boiled and dyed, they should be promptly put into the refrigerator to keep them fresh and edible. It’s adviseable to use plastic, wood or papiermâché eggs for Easter egg hunts, as eggs made of such materials will not spoil. Otherwise, hide and refrigerate hard-boiled eggs if this task can be completed within two hours. After that time frame, the eggs have the potential to spoil. By eating colored eggs, you can reduce waste and add a tasty appetizer to Easter meals.

The meaning of Good Friday METRO CREATIVE CONNECTION
Good Friday is a Christian holiday that is celebrated every year on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday. Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary, the location outside of Jerusalem’s walls where the crucifixion took place. Though Good Friday is considered a holiday and is a legal holiday in many countries across the globe, the commemoration is not characterized by the festive atmosphere many holidays inspire. In fact, in the fourth century, the Apostolic Constitutions described Good Friday as a day of mourning and prayer. In addition, many Christians fast on Good Friday, eating only one full meal and two smaller meals that do not add up to a full meal. Christians believe that commemorating the death of Christ helps to
remind them of the sacrifices that Christ made and the human sin that contributed to his death. The observance of Good Friday has existed for centuries. According to Catholic Online, the Catholic Church does not celebrate Mass on Good Friday, though church services held on Good Friday correspond to the divisions of a traditional Mass. These services include the Liturgy of the Word, during which the Passion of Jesus Christ is read; the intercessory prayers for all people, including non-Christians; the Veneration of the Cross, during which the crucifix is unveiled to the congregation; and the Holy Communion. During these services, the church organ and bells are silent. Good Friday is one of the holiest days of the year for Christians across the globe. This year Good Friday is celebrated on April 14.

Tell the story of life and hope Have you ever witnessed or saw something so amazing that you couldn’t wait to share it with someone? We went on a two-week road trip out West a couple years back and we saw some fascinating scenery. One place was an out of the way Utah State Park called Dead Horse Point. This state park is tucked in between two giant national parks (Arches and Canyonlands) and had some beautiful scenery and much of the park overlooked Canyonlands. It’s a lovely place. The morning we were going to continue our trip to the west, we took a short walk around some trails and enjoyed looking at all the different rocks and nooks and crannies. One area that caught my eye and was interesting was a rock that over a long period wedged itself in a narrow gap. When I first saw this, I thought it was so interesting and noteworthy that I turned around to Andrea, my wife and partner in ministry, and said “You’ve got to see this. This is so cool!” We like to share things that are
exciting, don’t we? Whether it’s interesting rock formations, news of a new job, a new child, achieving a new milestone, buying a new house, and so on. We like to share about the exciting things we find. Nowadays it’s easy to share exciting things with things like Facebook, Twitter, and the like but no matter how we share it, we like to share it. Jesus was executed on a Friday. Since Saturday was the Sabbath day, no one was permitted to do anything else to the body until Sunday morning. As soon as they were permitted, Mary Magdelene, Mary, the mother of Jesus, Johanna, and “other women” took the burial supplies they needed to finish the burial process (namely spices to mask the smell). expecting to find Jesus’ body, right? I mean, that would be the most logical thing. But they don’t. Jesus’ body is nowhere to be found. It was bad enough that they killed their Savior the way they did; now someone takes the body too? Come on, man. As they were surely panicking, they are suddenly greeted by two men in dazzling clothes. The women were terrified at seeing these men and feel down and bowed in fright. But the men said to them: ‘Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen.” The women then remember Jesus’ promise to them. It has come true! No one has taken him. He is ALIVE!! As you can imagine, this was shocking and surprising and joyous all

at the same time. They rush back to the 11 disciples who were still laying low and tell them that they must come see this, Jesus is alive! David Lose, President of Lutheran Seminary in Philadelphia, writes, “resurrection isn’t simply a claim that Jesus’ body was resuscitated; it’s the claim that God entered the stage of human history in order to create an entirely new reality all together. Which, quite frankly, can be frightening.” Anna Carter Florence aptly says, “if the dead don’t stay dead, what can you count on?” Resurrection breaks all the rules. Rules are predictable, a known quantity, and in many senses, comforting. But Jesus resurrection upsets all of that. It’s absurd. In the practical absurdity that is the resurrection of Jesus Christ, we are introduced to something dramatically new. When they discovered the
empty tomb, the disciples realized that when God raised Jesus from the dead, found a new reality was created. Death no longer holds power over us. Jesus is alive, declaring for all to see that life is more powerful than death and love more enduring than tragedy. And it is from this seemingly impossible event that we witness a fundamental shift in not only the disciples but in the world. It’s not something that happens overnight (heck, it takes the disciples several days before they fully understand that Jesus is alive), but the world starts to change on this day. The women who find the empty tomb come face to face with a God that has changed everything. They come face to face with the news that what they have been told as followers of Jesus has come true; that the promise has been fulfilled; that as crazy as it sounded, Jesus was alive! Despite the secular and

religious powers best attempts to snuff it out, God empties the tomb and shows us real power. A power that brings life to the deepest part of our being in the best possible way. We hear this story and discover a power that is deeper and more real than all other powers. It’s a power that literally brings the dead back to life, a power that restores and upends all that we know as “normal.” It’s a power that defeats death. It’s a power that gives us abundant life. It’s a power that gives us hope. The resurrection gives us a life no longer controlled by darkness and death and fills us with such joy and wonder that we can’t wait to tell anyone this wonderful, absurd news: Christ is risen! Historic restoration of Jesus’ burial shrine completed JERUSALEM (AP) — The tomb of Jesus has been resurrected to its former glory. Just in time for Easter, a Greek restoration team has completed a historic renovation of the Edicule, the shrine that tradition says houses the cave where Jesus was entombed and resurrected. Gone is the unsightly iron cage built around the shrine by British authorities in 1947 to shore up the walls. Gone is the black soot on the shrine’s stone façade from decades of pilgrims lighting candles. And gone are fears about the stability of the old shrine, which hadn’t been restored in more than 200 years. “If this intervention hadn’t happened now, there is a very great risk that there could have been a collapse,” Bonnie Burnham of the World Monuments Fund said Monday. “This is a complete transformation of the monument.” The fund provided an initial $1.4 million for the $4 million restoration, thanks to a donation by Mica Ertegun, the widow of a
co-founder of Atlantic Records. the stone slabs from the shrine’s façade and patched up the internal masonry of the shrine, injecting it with tubes of grout for reinforcement. Each stone slab was cleaned of candle soot and pigeon droppings, then put back in place. Titanium bolts were inserted into the structure for reinforcement, and frescos and the shrine’s painted dome were given a face-lift. The restorers also made some discoveries. On Oct. 26, the team entered the inner sanctum of the shrine, the burial chamber of Jesus, and temporarily slid open an old marble layer covering the bedrock where Jesus’ body is said to have been placed. Below the outer marble layer was a white rose marble slab engraved with a cross, which the team dated to the late Crusader period of the 14th century. Beneath that marble slab was an even older, grey marble slab protecting the bedrock, and mortar on the slab dates to the 4th century, when Roman Emperor Constantine ordered the Church of the Holy Sepulcher built.
The restorers have cut a small window from the shrine’s marble walls for pilgrims to see — for the first time — the bare stone of the ancient burial cave. “It seems we are in front of levels of history that are validated,” said Antonia Moropoulou, who supervised the renovation. The team is dismantling its worksite ahead of a ceremony Wednesday to mark the completion of the renovation, in the presence of two representatives of dueling Christian denominations — Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, who is the spiritual leader of the world’s Orthodox Christians, and a representative of Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church. Concern for the church’s stability has brought Christian denominations together, and Moropoulou hopes it ushers in a “new era” of cooperation. She hopes the communities will make some changes in longstanding customs inside the church, like pilgrims smashing their lit candles onto the Edicule’s stone wall, so the structure is not compromised. The answer is Easter, It’s always Easter Tragedy, pain, sorrow, difficulty, struggle, strife…these are words synonymous with life. Joy, gladness, celebration, jubilation, triumph, happiness… these are words that also describe ministering to and with people. Still, as human beings it is so difficult not to focus on the pain. We have a tendency to believe that darkness overpowers the light. Yet, John was clear in the first chapter of his gospel…John 1:1-5 says, In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. You read that right…darkness will NEVER extinguish, douse, put out, smother, or stamp out the light that has dawned in Jesus.

As I write this article I am on a journey down to southern Indiana for some rest and sabbatical time…it’s an annual Spring trip for solitude…to be with my Father. Often I arrive on these personal retreats weary and trying to lay down a heaviness and angst that has spawned from carry personal burdens and trying to carry the burdens of others. This is a reality of pastoral ministry… it’s a reality in every person’s life. Still, every time I slow down and lay my burdens at His feet I am reminded: His light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. No matter how dark it seems to get. This is why the Easter season and every Sunday on which I gather with my brothers and sisters in Christ is so important to me. Hope and light. Rick Warren, the pastor of Saddleback Church and the author of The Purpose Driven Life, together with his wife, Kay, went through a devastating
loss when their twenty-seven-year-old son Matthew took his own life after battling depression and mental illness for years. About a year after this tragedy, Rick said, “I’ve often been asked, ‘How have you made it? How have you kept going in your pain?’ And I’ve often replied, ‘The answer is Easter.’ “You see, the death and the burial and the resurrection of Jesus happened over three days. Friday was the day of suffering and pain and agony. Saturday was the day of doubt and confusion and misery. But Easter—that Sunday—was the day of hope and joy and victory. “And here’s the fact of life: you will face these three days over and over and over in your lifetime. And when you do, you’ll find yourself asking—as I did—three fundamental questions. Number one, ‘What do I do in my days of pain?’ Two, ‘How do I get through
my days of doubt and confusion?’ Three, ‘How do I get to the days of joy and victory?’ “The answer is Easter. The answer … is Easter.” The gospel is always the answer…we have been brought from death to life because of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus! And He has started the process of making all things new by instilling His light in those who would believe through the indwelling Holy Spirit. We are all tiny embassies of something better here in this dark place. So as you wrestle with me…. through the pain and sorrow of this dark world…just remember the answer is Jesus…and nothing can extinguish the light He has shined down to those He loves. Brian M.
