Antique Tin tiles l’élégance intemporelle de l’esprit victorien L’ histoire comme empreinte... Communément appelées « tin ceiling tiles », les plaques victoriennes furent des éléments décoratifs très populaires à la fin du XIXème siècle jusque dans les années 1930. Ces plaques ornaient les plafonds des bâtiments de style Victorien d’Amérique du Nord dont New-York fut l’épicentre. Ce phénomène décoratif s’étendit ensuite à l’ensemble des Etats‑Unis, au Canada ainsi qu’ aux anciennes colonies impériales de culture Anglo-Saxonne comme l’Australie et l’Afrique du Sud. Un esprit intemporel... Le style Victorien, lui, est né au Royaume-Uni, en référence à la période de règne de la reine Victoria (1837‑1901). Marquant un renouveau architectural, l’esthétique Victorienne reste connue pour son extrême éclectisme. Ce courant fut un véritable réveil de styles historiques mélangeant ainsi des inspirations orientales, asiatiques et européennes avec l ’Art Nouveau et l ’Art Déco. Les tin tiles se révèlent comme de splendides témoignages du style Victorien.

Une noblesse de caractère... Composées à l’origine d’une fine feuille d’étain, les plaques Victoriennes, utilisées comme lambris, furent à l ’époque préférées au plâtre comme une alternative technique moins onéreuse. Leur fabrication aisée (par pressage entre deux moules) permettait des designs audacieux et des reliefs spectaculaires. Elles étaient traditionnellement peintes en blanc pour donner l ’apparence de plâtre moulé ou de pierre sculptée à la main. Avec elles, le trompe-l’œil trouvait déjà, à cette époque, ses lettres de noblesse.

Précieuse rareté... Tombées dans l’oubli pendant des décennies, les rares pièces originales sont désormais particulièrement convoitées des antiquaires, architectes et décorateurs en recherche de scénographies empreintes d’histoire et de sophistication.

Conservateurs en la matière... Aujourd’hui, KOZIEL réintroduit à sa manière ces ornements uniques en leur genre à travers un exercice de style intemporel : le trompe‑l ’œil. Antique tin TileS The eternal elegance of the Victorian style Remnants of the past… Usually called « Tin Ceiling Tiles », since the end of the 19th century, Victorian tiles were part of a decorative trend extremely popular up to the 1930’s. This decorative trend then extended all over the United States, Canada, Australia and over the former imperial colonies highly influenced by the English culture such as South Africa.

A timeless spirit… The Victorian style was born in England, during Queen Victoria’s reign (1837-1901). The Victorian aesthetic is still well-known for its extreme eclectism that marked a turning point in the architectural revival. This movement represented a real resurgence of many historical styles combining in this way middle-east, Asian and European inspirations with the Art Nouveau and Art Deco.

A noble ambition... Originally composed of a thin tin plate, the Victorian ceiling tiles used as paneling, were a popular alternative to plaster because of its moderate price. The relatively easy production (by pressing between two molds) allowed creating bold designs and amazing reliefs. They were traditionally painted in white color to simulate the molded plaster or even the appearance of handmade sculptures. At this time, with these Victorian tin tiles, the trompe-l’œil effect already acquired its lettres de noblesse.

A precious rarity… Faded from memory during decades, the original pieces are now coveted by antique dealers, architects and decorators looking for bold designs, rich in history and sophistication.

Du fait des origines diverses des plaques, de leur ancienneté, et de la variété des matières, une même teinte peut légèrement varier dans sa tonalité d’un motif à l’autre. Les références de couleurs sont des « esprits de teintes ». Même si elles restent proches, il n’y a pas de correspondance exacte entre des mêmes teintes appliquées sur des motifs différents.

La perception des couleurs peut varier selon les conditions d’expositions du revêtement mural : le niveau de luminosité de la pièce dans laquelle il est placé, la source de lumière naturelle ou artificielle, la distance et l ’angle d ’observation sont autant de facteurs influençant le ressenti et la perception des couleurs.

THE TINTS PERCEPTION A tint may change a little bit from one pattern to another because of the tin tiles’ diverse origins and age. The perception of colors can also vary according to the light exposure of the decorative tiles, the light in the room, the light source (natural or artificial). All these elements have an impact on the aspect of the tints and their perception. Our colors are referenced as “tint shade”.

The Victorian tin tiles exclusive collection is available in two different finishes: old paint and pickled raw metal.

ASPECT PEINTURE ANCIENNE OLD PAINT FINISH Dans cette version, les plaques Victoriennes antiques ont été préservées en l’état exact dans lequel elles ont été dénichées. Une ou plusieurs anciennes couches de peintures anciennes couvrent tout ou partie du motif. De fines craquelures et de petits éclats de peinture plus ou moins profonds laissent apparaître, par endroit, le métal d’origine joliement terni, piqué et rouillé.

In this version, the antique Victorian tiles have been meticulously protected to keep the same aspect than when they were found. The majority of the models is covered by successive layers of old paint. Several cracks and small blemishes allow the natural beauty of the rusty metal to reveal itself and embellish the product.

Dans cette déclinaison, les plaques Victoriennes antiques ont été décapées puis brûlées pour ôter les différentes couches de peintures anciennes qui recouvraient le métal d’origine ( désormais à l’état brut ). Une version qui révèle parfaitement les moindres détails des designs et apporte de magnifiques reliefs. L’aspect métal brut est obtenu grâce aux jeux d’ombres et de lumières et la maîtrise des contrastes sur photos sans qu’aucune encre métalisée ne soit utilisée.

In this version, the antique Victorian tiles have been pickled and burnt to remove all the layers of paint and expose the original metal plate. This version reveals perfectly all the details of the design’s amazing reliefs. This raw metal aspect is obtained without adding metallized ink but with the subtlety of light and shadow interplayed and great attention to contrast.

Nos trompe-l’œil reproduisent fidèlement d’authentiques plaques victoriennes, dénichées « dans leur jus ».

Il est donc logique d’observer d’anciennes peintures écaillées, de légères traces de rouilles, d’impacts dans le métal, des poussières et des irrégularités de matière. Ces caractéristiques ne sont en aucun cas des défauts de reproduction : ce sont les marques du temps sur les pièces originales. Ces caractéristiques esthétiques qui apportent du charme sont assumées et même revendiquées comme de vrais témoignages du passé.

Certains modèles vous sont proposés jusqu’en 4 variantes pour chacune des teintes toute sensation de répétition disparaît au profit d’un réalisme abouti.

Ces variantes concernent la diversité des éclats, écailles, craquelures… qui rendent chaque dalle unique !

Notez que lorsque vous passez commande pour plusieurs dalles décoratives d’un même modèle et d’une même teinte, nous nous assurons autant que possible de produire pour vous un panachage des différentes variantes. Our trompe-l’œil tiles faithfully recreate authentic Victorian tiles found in their original condition.

That is the reason why you may observe, on several designs, marks of rusty metal, little impacts and irregularities in the aspect of the metal or the paint. These marks of time are not considered as manufacturing defects but underline the pieces’ originality and natural beauty that testifies from its history. These marks are telling us the story of these tiles, and this is why we preserved them carefully.

Some designs are offered in up to 4 different variants in every tint. The effect is even more realistic as any sensation of pattern repeat disappears.

These variants differ in the diversity of small marks, paint tokes and rust… and make each tile unique !

Note that when you place an order for a large quantity of the same tile we will make sure to produce a mix of all existing variants. If you have opted for a composed pattern, just let us know how they will be displayed so we can make sure to produce the right mix of variants.
