LARRY CRESSMAN FIELDWORK NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 2018

I once read in a text on drawing that “line doesn’t exist in nature”. This statement seemed strange to me – especially having been surrounded by the Michigan landscape for most of my life. Lines are everywhere – black lines and gray shadows cast on the white surface of snow for much of any given year. This linear landscape has certainly impacted and influenced the direction my work has taken. Line has consistently been the driving force – the “object” and “language” of my work.

For a number of years I have focused on the use of sticks and twigs – specifically raspberry cane, dogbane and dried daylily stalks. Gathering this material from fields near my home and studio has become a part of the drawing process. The gestural quality of each plant and the physical nature of the material (density, weight and brittleness) all play a role as I explore imagery reflective of the structure, randomness and fragile nature of the constantly changing Michigan landscape.
