Second memory, the story of Struppy This is the story of a big stray dog. At that time our big people lived in the Czech Republic. Yes, after wandering around the world our Missus returned home, specifically to Frýdek-Místek. My dear friends, I’m now going to tell you a little secret about this city, okay? My missus is always angry that the people who live there don’t know which part is Frýdek and which part Místek. It’s actually quite simple. A river called Ostravice runs through it and forms the natural boundary between these two parts of the city. What’s more, Frýdek is higher, because it sits on a hill, and it has a wonderful castle with a garden.

Místek is lower, just a walk down the hill. Ha ha, confusing, eh? But you’re pretty smart listeners, I’m sure you understood me well. But if not, then you will once you drive through F-M. Well, in the farthest corner of Místek there is a housing estate with these 98

blocks of flats, a residential area with a beautiful park, but also a lot of trash containers. And all of this was the territory of our heroic dog. He was a poor wanderer who never had any luck finding a permanent home, who had already been kicked out of two families. Our goodhearted adult people would notice him at the trash containers looking for something, and then again later in the park. They looked around and saw that he had no owner about

him. They even once saw him steal a roll from a child. He didn’t injure the poor thing, just he was so hungry and it looked like easy prey. He grabbed it, jumped into the bushes and was gone. They also saw 99

him hunting fish in the river or otherwise begging. He would stand on his hind paws and pat his front ones together.

People gave him something here and there. It was mostly those who had a dog at home, but they had to do it in secret. Why? Because we animals can be very jealous. We see others as intruders ready to take something from our bowls and that kind of attitude helps create enemies throughout the world.

Our hero had two enemies like this. There was a dog named Tonda, who was well fed, raised and pampered at home. He was jealous of the stray and could always sense his smell on his owner. So whenever they met outside, the fur started flying.

But this Tonda had a responsible owner who watched over him and kept him on a leash, so the fights between them were rare only if perchance they ran into each other around the corner, or otherwise the owner was chatting up a nice lady. But then there was this mega enemy, a spoiled little varmint who was always running around outside without any supervision. You know, children, our 100
