Veronica with Spiderweb, 1966, monotype drypoint This picture is a good example of the paths that Reynek’s inspiration sometimes took, and of the elements that underwrote his iconography. Stylistically related to other works of his mature period of the mid1960s, “Veronica with Spiderweb” faithfully imitates elements of his Petrkov home with its glass-panelled doors on the ground floor, behind which one can see a further door opening onto the garden. The web woven by the accentuated spider substitutes the traditional veil of Veronica with the print of Christ’s face. It prevents her from entering the green paradise, so loved by the artist. The picture reminds us of the long period when Reynek would not enter his own garden, so appalled was he by its devastation at the hands of the tenants billeted there by the socialist authorities.
