28 October 1940 – celebration of the national holiday. In the middle are Kubiš and Gabčík who received the Czechoslovak Military Cross 1939. Sadly later in the day an unpleasant incident took place. During celebrations in the restaurant of the Red Lion Hotel in the nearby village of Bickerton, a fight broke out between a group of British soldiers and highly drunk members of the Czechoslovak brigade. Karel Čurda and Josef Gabčík „saw“ one of the English out of the restaurant and a bigger fight was looming. Gabčík handed Čurda his pistol saying: „Don‘t be afraid, here is my pistol, so shoot!“ The event caused considerable outrage and was investigated by the brigade’s II department.

Expression of thanks to the British population.

On the occasion of celebration of Prince Václav’s Day (Patron of the Czech lands), a memorial stone was unveiled at Cholmondeley on 28 September 1940.

It was sculpted by František Bělský.

Kubiš commented on the picture: „Little me and his Majesty Gabčík.“ So far neither of them have any idea about the forthcoming task which will go down in posterity and which will give back to the decimated country its national pride.

End of October 1940. The melancholic tones of the Last Post are sounding for the last time. Life in Cholmondeley is for most Czechoslovak soldiers history...

The good mood is catching. From the top: Viktor Penk, Vladislav Olšina, Rudolf Pernický and Josef Šimůnek.

Olšina and Šimůnek reached France in the spring of 1940 on transport from the Soviet Union.

Last units and men are leaving Cholmondeley. Second from left in the truck is František Pavelka. In France he had been posted to No. 3 Company 2nd Infantry Regiment with which he fought at the front. Near the back of the truck is Oldřich Dvořák. Both are now serving with a signals platoon of 2 Battalion.
