marketing Marketing art, art of marketing Art does not arise in a vacuum. Its evolution copies wider societal trends with surprising accuracy and works of art at the same time play a role in shaping these trends. Any art, if it is intended for an external audience (not only the author himself or God), has its customer, and it is, in a broader sense, a product. For this reason, its form corresponds in many aspects with the development of consumer trends, and even radical experiment, in this materialistic approach, could be considered as a production strategy, an effort to gain a competitive advantage through innovation. Research into historical parallels between certain products and works of art would certainly result in a separate book as it would in the case of business and art strategies. We shall focus only on the last few decades, a period in which marketing in the modern sense was constituted as a sales strategy; Marketing, whose centre of attention is the customers with whom it is trying to communicate and whose real needs it is trying to satisfy. The turnaround in marketing strategies came in the 1960s, under the influence of revolutionary theories of the American theorist Wroe Alderson. He opened the field to interdisciplinary scientific discourse and campaigned for companies’ greater sensitivity to the needs of the market, which could be achieved through sophisticated surveys. Alderson’s reflections119 applied behavioural science theories to the area of the market and rejected a purely economic approach. Companies are perceived as organisms that require constructive cooperation with a particular environment to function properly, and attention
should be paid to smaller social units instead of the universal, anonymous customer. His concept of hedonomics was a breakthrough. Businesses should strive for customer satisfaction, the feeling that should be a goal in itself, not merely a means to increase sales. Alderson’s effort to humanize corporations is very close to Whyte and his book The Organization Man (see the chapter on Community), which had been released just a year earlier. They also share an interest in the analysis of social relations and communication with smaller social units.” Aldersonian Marketing” and “Whytean urbanism” also have successors which can be similarly compared. Alderson’s work influenced the development of micro-marketing, which has been developing since the late 1980s. Instead of expensive nationwide campaigns, the targeting of very small and specific groups of customers or even a single person is recommended, and much attention is paid to creating a well-knit user community. Recently, it does not only give feedback to companies but is often actively involved in the development of marketing strategies and the products themselves (participatory marketing). Events such as “suggest a slogan” or “invent a new flavour” complete the more targeted and sophisticated procedures. Viral campaigns created in a DIY manner by customers themselves – or at least pretending to be amateur and authentic creations; opening test versions of software and games to customers who participate in their development for free; crowd funding campaigns popular in the cultural sphere, where future users are even financially involved in the creation of the product; pop-up and smallscale guerilla interventions, but with the potential of mass media coverage.

Společný mají i zájem o analýzu sociálních vztahů a komunikaci s menšími sociálními jednotkami. Akce typu „navrhněte slogan“, „vymyslete novou příchuť“ doplňují cílenější a rafinovanější postupy. Virální kampaně vytvářené metodou DIY samotnými zákazníky – nebo svůj amatérský a autentický vznik alespoň předstírající; otevírání testovacích verzí počítačových programů a her zákazníkům, kteří se bezplatně podílejí na jejich vývoji; v kulturní sféře velice oblíbené crowdfundingové kampaně, které budoucí uživatele zapojují do vzniku produktu i finančně; pop-up a guerillové intervence malého rozsahu, ale s potenciálem masové medializace.

The success of such strategies lies in the identification of the customer with a certain brand or product. Today, both the quality and the ethos are important. The customer must find the producer likeable. Ever since the 1980s, a socially responsible marketing has been developing, following in Alderson’s
idealistic footsteps. Companies of today compete in supporting various community activities (cultural events, raising health awareness, social services). They try to portray their businesses as moral (socially and environmentally responsible fair trade goods), or closely associated with a particular community or locality
