ëOnce,í said the Mock turtle at last, with a deep sigh, ëI was a real Turtle.í These words were followed by a very long silence, broken only by an occasional1 exclamation of ëHjckrrh!í from the Gryphon, and the constant heavy sobbing of the Mock Turtle. Alice was very nearly getting up and saying, ëThank you, Sir, for your interesting story,í but she could not help thinking there must be more to come, so she sat still and said nothing. ëWhen we were little,í the Mock Turtle went on at last, more calmly, though still sobbing a little now and then, ëwe went to school in the sea. The master was an old Turtle ñ we used to2 call him Tortoise ñí ëWhy did you call him Tortoise3, if he wasnít one?í Alice asked. ëWe called him Tortoise because he taught us4,í said the Mock Turtle angrily: ëreally you are very dull!í ëYou ought to be ashamed of yourself for asking such a simple question,í added the Gryphon; and then they both sat silent and looked at poor Alice, who felt ready to sink into the earth. At last the Gryphon said to the Mock Turtle, ëDrive on, old fellow! Donít be all day about it!í5, and he went on in these words:

UËil n·s star˝ éelv·k, ¯Ìkali jsme mu Marh˘l.ì ÑProËpak jste mu ¯Ìkali Marh˘l, kdyû to Marh˘l nebyl?ì zeptala se Alenka. Nakonec ¯ekl Noh Paûelvovi: ÑTak povÌdej d·l, kamar·de, aù to netrv· cel˝ den!ì a Paûelv hovo¯il tÏmito slovy:

1. occasional, (adj.): not happening often or regularly / (obËasnÈ) 2. used to call him: the expression used to is used to speak of something that always or repeatedly hapened in the past but is no longer true (ìHe used to love dogs but then one attacked him.î) / (¯Ìk·vali jsme mu)

3.-4. tortoise, (n.): one of a species of turtle that live on land (are terrestial), not in the sea; there is a homophonic play present here in the substitution of tortoise for taught us on the basis of the identical way they are pronounced 5. be all day about it: take all day to do it
