EDITORIAL COMMENTS
AYYEKO—WHERE ARE YOU?
Dvar Yerushalayim, the Jerusalem Academy of Jewish Studies, has done much in the past several years to bring young men close to Yiddishkeit. This thanks to the efforts of its spiritual and academic guide, Rabbi Boruch Horo vifz and his aides, who have come very close to their young men.
Some time ago the Rosh Yeshiva prepared a checklist that is approp riate for this season of Self Appraisalto let us see for ourselves where we stand ..in adherence and observance, in Jewish consciousness and Jewish conscience.
There are many more questions that we ourselves may add as we under take our Cheshbon Hanefesh and seek to bal~nce our Book of the Soul. How good to find, when the pluses and min uses have been totaled, that we are a plus where our People are concernedthat we are a part of the kIal and not apart from it!
Says Rabbi Horovitz: “Ayyekko? Where are You?
This was the deeply-searching and summoning one-word question which G-d addressed to Adam on his Day of Judgment. “What have you achieved with the many physical and spiritual gifts with which endowed you?” Since then, G-d asks us, and asks us to ask ourselves, at every moment, but espe cially at this time of the year: “Where are you?”
Where do you live?
Do you live in a Jewish neighbor hood, near a Shul, Mikvah, and Kosher shops? Or do you prefer the vicinity of the gambling clubs, bowling alleys and coffee bars?
Are you a good neighbour, taking an interest in the welfare of those next door? Is the door of your home open to the poor and to worthy causes?
Is your house a real home an abode of love and harmony? Or is it a place of discord and gossip then no luxury fittings or furniture will make it in to a home.
Is there room in your house for a Tze
doko-box, Siddur, Chumash, Jewish books and calendar? For Kosher Me zuzos? (They require regular inspec tion). For Shabbos-lights, Kiddush cup and Challos, for Besomim-(spice) box and Havdalah candle? Are the Shab bos meals and all other preparations ready beforehand so that it really be comes a day of rest for all? Can one feel the Shabbos and Yomtov atmos phere there? Is there space in your yard for a Sukah when that Festival ar rives? It is all this that makes your house into a Jewish home.
Are there separate facilities and utensils for Mitchig, Fleishig, and Pes ach in your kitchen and dining room? Are the regulations of Jewish family purity adhered to? It is this that makes your household into a Kosher home.
Where do you earn your living?
Is your chosen career a constructive contribution to the world, involving no Chillul Hashem, nor desecration of G d’s commandments: no usury, disho nesty, no exploitation of the poor, no profanation of Shabbos and Yom-Tov?
Where do you spendyour leisure time?
Do you spend your Shabbos in Shul and at home, relaxing with your family; or do your really, as an adult-thinking person, believe that the fortunes of a swiftly-moving horse, dog or little ball are of greater importance? Do you at tend the many Shiurim, lectures and discussion groups available? Or does the little enslaving screen, upon which so many crimes are enacted, offer you greater morale and moral uplift? Do you not wish to study the “Divine BooktheTanach, the best-seller and foun dation of all true civilisation; and the great wisdom contained in the Tal mud? Or are results of sports-events and national and communal scandal the only topics which are worthy of “se rious” study and discussion?
Where do you eat?
am sure you would not dream of al lowing non-Kosher goods into your home. You should be equally particu lar, in town and on holiday, to eat only at a Kosher table.
Where do you pray?
Do you only pay to the Shul? YOU should go there to pray. There you may forget mundane matters and gossip, and think of G-d, and try to commune with the Creator. Come, if possible ev ery day; at least every Shabbos. Does G-d not give you fresh life every day and every week? Do you wear a Kosher Tallis and Tefillin? Do you sanc tify your everyday life by saying Bro chos and Benching?
Where do you send your children?
Are you careful to send them to good religious schools, Chadorim and reli gious youth groups? Only in this way will you derive real Jewish Nachas from them.
Where do you come from?
Your ancestors were saintly men of G-d, who gave up their lives for the sake of the Torah. You form a link in a great chain of tradition-of the holy peo ple. The strength of the chain lies in its weakest link. Are you ready to en danger the whole people by a weaken ing of your Jewish life?
Where are you going?
Whatever you may have done in the past, you can choose to change your future. The power of Teshuvah is great. If you have wandered you can return home. You can participate in the reli gious revival which is now spreading in wide Jewish circles as the only alterna tive to the corrupt materialistic life which is engulfing much of twentieth century civilisation. If you will really be true to yourself and honest to G-d you will go to the Absolute Personal G-d of Israel and to His Mitzvos in order to find the only ever-new morality which can save modern man from physical and moral suicide.
Where are you, My Friend?!
Where are We?
What and how do we answer? And where do we rank on the scale of Jew ish living?

Inth Beginning
From the works of the Lubavitcher Rebbe Shlita
Our Torah is eternal. From It we may learn and derive gui dance for all of our affairs, in all times, and in all places. The Torah Is not a “story book.” As the word itself implies (Torah is derived from Hora-ah—Teach Ing). The Torah Is a guide to cor rect conduct In our daily lives, in both material and spiritual mat ters.
The Torah begins with the chapter Bereishis, where the order of creation of the world is related. We can find certain gen eral principles in this narrative that provide guidelines for any type of creation. We should be able, from the explanation given In Bereishis, to learn about the
formation of any “new world” such as a new project, a new movement, or a new effort.
The first words of Bereishis are:”In the beginning, G-d creat ed the heaven and the earth. Now the earth was unformed and void and darkness was upon the face of the deep and G-d said, ‘let there be light’ and there was light.” The Torah then re lates that order emerged from the chaos; then plant life, then animal life, and finally man, were created.
What can we learn from this with respect to our own crea tion?
* * *
In the beginning When one first approaches any new undertaking or any new effort, the beginning, the first essential step, is to know that.
G-d created. it is G-d who is the ultimate source of any creation. But he desires that creative acts are to be imple mented by people who should consider themselves as G-d’s messengers, entrusted to carry out His Will.
Now the earth was unformed and void and darkness
During the first stages of any good and worthwhile undertak ing it always seems to those in volved in the pioneer effort, that there is no support from the en vironment; it is void, empty and dark. It appears to them that it will be extremely dfficult to develop the project in the desired manner, i.e. in a way that will be in accordance with their aims. Thus Torah relates that right at the very beginning of creation
G-d said ‘let there be light,’ and there was light. When The Almighty so desired, where be fore there was utter darkness, suddenly light appeared. Then, order emerged out of the chaos, then “plant life” began to grow, then creatures imbued with life appeared in this “new world,” and finally came man,the high est form of all creation.
* * *
When sincere effort is exerted in any worthwhile undertaking in Yiddishkeit (Torah-Judaism) one must be strong in one’s de termination that the new project or attempt at self-improvement must be “created.” Then, even if at the start there is darkness, light soon appears heralding the beginning of better and higher formation and growth. As our sages said, “Ma’alin Bako

desh, “in everything connected with Torah and Mitzvos one should always go from strength to strength.

ENJOYING THE GOOD LIFE
It is something of a paradox that from the very beginning, while still in the utopian setting of the Garden of Eden, Adam was immediately put to work, as we read in this week’s Sidra. Quite contrary to the popular image, Adam never had a chance to enjoy complete rest or relax free of duties and responsibili ties. Even before violating the Divine word, the innocent Adam’s raison d’etre was “to work and watch it(i.e., the Garden of Eden). Yet Adam’s life in the Garden at that time is considered the epitome of “good living”. Obviously, hard work and the good life are not incom patible. In fact, hard work makes the good life, as we shall soon see.
The question may be asked: could not the Good and All Mer ciful G-d have shown even great er kindness by creating a perfect world where nothing would be lacking, work would be superflu ous and labor would be unneces sary? Where man would subsist on His Grace alone and be able to “take it easy” instead of working and earning a living.
We are told that man was created after everything else so that he should find all his needs already provided for. Then why this need for work? If work and improvement of the world are called for, then obviously crea tion was not yet at its best. Yet the Almighty seemed to be satis fied with this imperfect state of affairs, for every successive development of the first six days of creation is called “good”. Here is a clear indication that it is
these very imperfections and faults - requiring improvement and work - that are part ofthe ul timate good.
G-d did not wish to shower up on men undeserved bliss and good. He did not want to leave no area for men to work at and exer cise his creativity. On the con trary, G-d wanted to give man a sense of fulfillment and accomp lishment, something he could consider his own. There is defi nitely a greater appreciation of that which a man earns by the labor of his own hands than what he would receive as a “han dout”. In fact, a person would prefer a single bushel of his own to nine bushels rerceived as a give away.
Things would certainly have been easier and less complicated if we were to receive everything “on a silver platter” without ef fort and sweat on our part. But that would be eating “the unde served bread of shame” as the Zohar puts it.
There is a saying “it is hard to be a Jew”, a minority in an alien (if not hostile) society, where one finds the going rough, discou raging and hard. Nothing comes easy: yet this too is for our own good. Only that which we right fully earn through persistent work and effort gives true satis faction: the sense of victory comes only after a challenge. Per haps if things were easier and hardships would be eliminated much more would be achieved. But, then again, the “examina tion papers” of life are marked for effort even more than for ac complishment.
TORAH AND CREATION—A CHASSIDIC INSIGHT
The sidra Noach tells of men’s failure to give expression to G dliness through their daily lives. With the exception of Noach and

his family, the generation of men on the earth at that time sunk into a way of life ofviolence and rebellion against G-d’s word, the disaster of the flood followed. We are all, in a sense, survivors of the flood, and when the Sidra Noach is read it is an especially auspicious time for us to do some hard thinking on avoiding the tragic mistakes of Noah’s generation. WE must carefully examine the basic na ture of the Torah and see what is its relationship to the universe we live in and to ourselves as Jews. Then we will be able to draw the correct conclusions to guide our actions to day to day living. Some Chassidic thoughts on the subject:
The holy Torah is not a collec tion of laws for special occa sions. It embraces the totality of the Jew, from his first moment to his last; it encompasses all the minute aspects of his day to day life. This is the meaning of the expression “Toras Chayim” de scribing the Torah as the “Law of Life”. But what is the philo sophical basis for this idea?
Torah embraces the totality of creation. An architect, before creating a building, draws up blueprints and plans covering every detail of the structure. In the same way, the Creator used the Torah as a “blueprint” for all creation—down to the minutest particle in the inanimate mate rial world.
The Baal Shem Toy ex pounded one of the basic doc trines of Chassidism with his in terpretation of the verse “Fore ver, oh G-d, your word stands firm in the heavens”. Explained the Baal Shem Toy: Everything in the heavens above and in the earth below, in all their particu lars exists only by virtue of the “word” of G-d - meaning the Al mighty’s utterance (at the time ofcreation) “Let there be a firma-
ment let there be lights., etc.” and all the other divine ex pressions of creation. This “word” created, creates and vi talizes all things continuously, every instant, without interrup tion. From this follows another basic doctrine that of G-d’s “particular providence”.
G-d’s direct knowledge of, and providence for, all particular things, extends to each and all minute details of the creation; from individual man the su preme creature to the lowest thing in the inanimate world. The term used for this special providence is Hashgacha Protiss. 2 conclusions we draw from it:
FIRST, that it is incumbent upon the Jew to serve G-d in all details and with all details and aspects of his life and his sur roundings. Man’s service of G-d must begin with the study of the Torah and the fulfillment of the 613 divine precepts, and should extend down to the simplest acts ofdaily life such as eating, drink ing, sleeping, etc.
SECOND, that no-one wit nesses an event or finds himself in a certain place at a certain time for no particular reason at all. Nothing happens “by chance”. In fact, everything in one’s surroundings is a lesson in love of G-d and fear of G-d the wellsprings from which the Jew draws inspiration to fulfill the Mitzvos with perfection and with a spirit of true vitality.
* * *
The philosophical basis for the idea that the Torah encompasses the “totality of the Jew” all as pects of his life is now clear. Whoever gives practical expres sion to this doctrine in his daily life merits the description app lied to Noah by the Torah, name ly that “Noah walked with G-d”, and avoids the tragic error of Noah’s generation.

AS DARK RETIRES
Sing time: Sing every season. Rhyme
And sad or mad
Unreason.
Sing joy, Though stark of darkness loom
While suns blaze buoyant Laughter, And though our moon Be hoonless, And a cloud
Have cowed
Our seeking-after...
I sing. I sound
A roundelay
To yesterday, and hear
A lilt of echo of
A tripping tune for tipsy dancers
Drunk with love:
A pirouette; a pas de deux; A toe points high; Two hearts kick skyward And pursue
A spark
On quickening wings Of our caress And blessing.
The stark is gone
And dawn
Suffuses with wildflashing fires
As dark Retires
And daylight’s song emerges!
Smile....
A hope.. that surges
While
The heart is trembling at tomorrow’s woe, And helter-skelter
To-and-fro-ing Brings no answers; a prayer
That charts
New orbits in the universe
For soaring song to ride
The Wide Expanses, Though men immerse the soul
In doleful
Fare—
Thee-wells andfears of parting
While suns of noontide wonder

With praise Of heaven.

Streaks
Of screamning blood
On grey—
Shriveling shrieks
As lords of war
At play
Count fallen bodies

And eyelids
Closing
On a stare
That pierces skies
With tremble-chilling Ice, And laugh!
How cold!
I straggle, Dead and unfulfilled, Among the disembodied dreams That men have killed.
I sleep, And in my deep Escapeful slumber
See., dreams in countless number 1 could have fashioned To reality...

I awake to glow and glory: Wolf and lamb of allegory; I embrace
A trace of heaven, Breathe its carefree Sharefree loving, Knowing—
When my seas are stormy
Heaven’s Light will calm and cradle, Shed And spread Its soul And solace...

the ebbe’s Orders
by Judy Siegel
As in other business premises, the photograph of the bearded founder—framed and under glass—hangs prominently in the office.
But the man responsible for the establishment of Flocktex textiles, Guller metaiworks and Golgotex weaving—all in Kiryat Malachi, near Ashkelon—has
never been to the southern devel opment town or even visited Is rael.
Each ofthe firms came into be ing as the result of instructions from Brooklyn’s Lubavitcher Rebbe, Menahem Schneerson, to the followers of his Habbad sect.
“Just before the Yom Kippur War, the rebbe told me to build a
business in Kiryat Malachi to give jobs to the new immigrants who live there,” recalls David Deitsch, a cigar-chomping, Pol ish-born millionaire who opened Flocktex three years ago. The 66year-old businessman regularly takes a few weeks a year off from his Deitsch Plastics Company in New Haven, Connecticut, to visit the flourishing daughter com pany in Israel. When he’s away, his son-in-law Meir Zeiler looks after his interests.
“I don’t have a beard like my great-grandfather who was a Ha badnik, but I’m a Habadnik all the same,” said Deitsch. “And whatever the rebbe says has to be done.” The millionaire didn’t even ask questions or argue when the rebbe issued his re quest. Deitsch is used to donat ing to Habad causes. “The rebbe doesn’t have to tell us to give mo ney—that’s in our blood al ready.”
With an eye on production for export, Deitsch decided that the Kiryat Malachi plant would make skal (artificial leather), corduroy and velvety frock fa brics. After Israeli building firms claimed that it would take many months to erect the 4,000 square-metre factory from pref ab units, Deltsch found an American firm that put it up in less than two weeks.
He also brought to Israel seven men who worked for him in Con necticut, and their families, to start Flocktex. Today it employs 51, exports $3m. worth of goods a year to Europe, South Mr;ca and Australia, and sells $lm. worth in Israel. Now engaged in expansion, Flocktex is building a new wing for dyeing and print ing of fabric that is expected to employ about 100 more.
Although a few Habadniks work for the company, the large majority of the employees are im migrants from Russia, including 9

Bokharans and Georgians. Some are religious, some aren’t. It doesn’t matter to Deitsch or the rebbe. “And they’re very good workers,” says Sam Halpern, the 30-year old manager of the com pany whom Deitsch brought from America. We payjust about the highest wages in the textile industry to get good people.”
I’m very happy here,” says Mi chael Batashvili, a Georgian im migrant who works with some of the automatic machines. He praises the company even when his bosses are out of earshot. An inventory keeper in the Soviet Union, Michael came on aliya in 1971, worked for the Argaman factory and applied for a job at Flocktex.
The machines produce 10 ki lometres of fabric a day, which is used for upholstery, curtains and clothing. The factory floor is so long that some workers go from one end to another on twowheeled scooters.
Deitsch has his hands full, but If the Lubavitcher Rebbe were to ask him to open another factory to absorb immigrants in Israel, he’d do it. “You never know when or what the rebbe will ask,” he says with a chuckle.
A few minutes’ drive away is
Guller metaiworks, which as sembles sprinklers for Kibbutz Na’an and manufactures pre-fab ricated railings and window bars.
It is run by Meir Lehrer, the head of one of the 10 Habad fam ilies who were instructed a dec ade ago by the rebbe to leave Kfar Habad near Lod and move to Ki ryat Malachi. Some of the wives, he remembers, were pregnant, but that didn’t delay their plans. They moved into tiny develop ment town flats the day after re ceiving the instructions.
Today, Guller employs 40 local residents, many of them elderly, some of them mentally handi capped. Those who are physical ly handicapped were enabled to work at the machines after Lehrer himself adapted the devi ces to suit each employee.
“The welfare ministry begs us to hire troubled people who can’t get a job anywhere else,” he adds.
The seven-year-old firm pro duces 50,000 sprinkling devices a month—all for export. “We also made the window bars and rail ings for the Israel Embassy in Cairo,” says Lehrer proudly.
Mordechai Gorodetsky, one of
the owners of Golgotex, was a textile worker in Tashkent be fore he came on aliya 14 years ago. The son of a Habadnik who was jailed for 15 years in Russia for teaching Yiddishkeit, Morde chai opened the business in 1970 at the bidding of the Rebbe.
The clattering weaving ma chines produce 100,000 grey and green wool blankets for the Israel Defense Forces each year, and some pastel and floral blankets for the open marJ~et. Gorodetsky’s 35 employees, mostly Russian ohm as well, also weave the white cotton cloth made into four-cornered ritual fringed garments for religious soldiers.
As in all the Habad-inspired factories, the rebbe’s picture hangs on the wall and his name is mentioned frequently and with reverence. Here too, the Ha badniks wear—even in doors—the black fedora hats that are the trademark of Luba vitch hassidim.
Today, there are 550 Habad families in the Lubavitch section of Kiryat Malachi. With an aver age of six or seven children to each family, the Habad conting

ent forms a large part of the town’s population of 20,000.
Rabbanit Shulamit Yaros lavsky, a 35-year-old mother of eight whose husband Yehuda is rabbi of the Habad community in the town, clearly remembers her feelings after learning the news of the rebbe’s instructions 10 years ago.
“The first 18 Georgian immi grant families were due to arrive in Israel and settle in Kiryat Ma lachi, and the rebbe wanted us to absorb them,” she recalls.
Though it would have been natural to be reluctant to leave comfortable homes in Kfar Hab ad and move to “a desert,” the hasidim greeted the news with joy. “All hassidim of the rebe wait In anticipation for instruc tions from him. Ifyou’re chosen, it’s an honour, a sign that the rebbe thinks you’re worthy of a challege,” says the rabbanit. “We were very happy to help the new ohm. I admit that I was some what worried about my family. I had just had my third child, and there were no facilities. I won dered where the other children would study, and where we would pray, because there were no synagogues.”
“There were no decent paved roads, no hallot for Shabbat on ly one grocery and no street lighting,” says Batsheva Wolff, a 32-year-old, Jerusalem-born mother of six who moved with her family to Nahlat Har Habad (the name of the settlement in Kiryat Malachi) from Lod a year after the first 10 families moved in. “In the winter, the streets turned to mud, and taking the kids to Kupat Holim on the other side of town was a real expedi tion.”
Kiryat Malachi didn’t even have a mikve (ritual bath), until one was built by the Habadniks a few years later, women had to go out of town every month to
use one.
Batsheva, who grew up in a hassidic home but one loyal to a different hassidic dynasty, thinks the Georgian Jews are wonderful people, contrary to their image. “They have warm, open hearts and homes, they’re hard working, and everything at home is hand-made.”
She recalls the Friday the first Georgian families arrived. “We had heard that they were Orien tals, so we made a special effort to make Sephardic food—like te hina and huntous—that they would enjoy for Shabbat. But to our surprise, on the following Sunday, we found that they had dumped all that we had prepared in the garbage cans. Apparently they just couldn’t stomach the kind of food we had prepared. So they went to the market a few hours after arriving and made their customary dishes.” Georgi ans use “bagsful of parsley” and dried, ground prunes for season ing.
Batsheva saw the women cleaning their pots with sand, and, failing to explain through sign language the use of deter gent paste, she took the pots and scrubbed them herself. The new immigrants quickly got the hang of it.
Gradually, the Habad families moved out of their cramped, 54square-metre flats into new ones built by the Housing Ministry.
“The town had a bad name, there was crime and prostitu tion,” says the rabbanit. “The lo cal residents couldn’t under stand why we came on our own volition.”
Although the early Kiryat Ma lachi residents were alarmed to see men with long sidecuris and black coats, the women in mod est dress and head-coverings, the external barriers gradually broke down and relations among the various communities are

The Habad women, despite their large families, have devel oped a social welfare and educa tional network that would be the envy of the government.
They devote so much time to it, that it seems they were en dowed with 30-hour days.
Whenever the Habad women learn that a Kiryat Malachi resi dent has given birth, they make sure that the mother is greeted upon her return from hospital with a vase of fresh flowers and a home-baked cake. They also pro vide a package of baby clothes, two weeks of free babysitting for the other children and two
weeks’ free housecleaning.
They also turn kitchens kosher for families that request it, and help buy dishes and pots with money from a special Habad fund.
Thirty lonely old people around town eat daily hot meals at a Habad facility that charges no thing for the service.
All of these projects are funded by money collected—a few Urot at a time—from the hassidim and other residents.
One night a week, or even more frequently, Habad women hand their children over to their husband’s care, and go out on their campaigns.
Now there are 3.QUALITY PRODUCTS
Dozens of Women visit hospi tals in Rehovot, Ashkelon and other towns, bringing good cheer and Shabbat candles. They also organize Purim and Hanukka parties, mezuza cam paigns, Torah classes, and visits to the elderly at home.
They have a mobile van that drives around town, attracting children wandering aimlessly in the streets, and telling them Bible stories and explaining the mitzvot.
Habad women also established a free-loan fund exclusively for other women to help out those who are caught short of money and need emergency help.
At first, they visited schools and army camps and offered to give talks on Jewish holidays and ethics. “Now they call us,” says the rabbanit. Dozens of children attend low-cost sum mer camps organized by Habad.
A tour of the vocational school established by Habad arouses admiration. Many youngsters come from troubled, broken families in Beersheba, Ashkelon and Ashdod, and learning is just about the farthest thing from their minds when they enrol. At an elementary school for boys, Habadniks and their Bokharan and Georgian pupils are seen celebrating the bar mitzva of a new oleh who only five weeks ago had been circumcised. Women relatives with gold teeth welcome guests and offer them boiled po tatoes and fruit.
Maimonides would have ap proved of the hassidim of Kiryat Malachi. He wrote that one of the greatest mitzvot—higher on the scale of righteousness than giv ing charity to a man who asks for it—is to provide the needy with ajob and self-respect so he can support himself with ho nour. The Habadniks are doing that, hundreds of times over, ev ery day.

My last article was written in Luxembourg. I promised that I would continue writing about my experiences in Europe, about the new products we now certify, and about some of the hotels I visited.
My first stop was to revisit the Phillip-Duphar B.V. Chemical Company in Holland that produces Vitamin D-3. This product is sold to many vitamin companies in the U.S. and is used in milk, marga rine, vitamin pills, and many other products. There are two Vitamin D’s; one is Vitamin D-2 which is produced from yeast and may be Cho metzdik and the other is Vitamin D-3 which may be produced from three sources-- spinal cord, fish oil or wool grease. The Vitamin D-3 produced by the Philip Duphar B.V. Chemical Company in Hol land is produced from wool grease. This vitamin is then exported to the U.S.A. where it is mixed with various media; the most common being emulsifi er, oils, milk, or butter. Of course, the oils or emul sifier must be from a Kosher source.
I visited another similar company called PEBOC Ltd. in Wales. This company is affiliated with the Philip-Duphar B.V. Chemical Company in Hol land. The production is practically the same and the ingredients are exactly the same. These vita-

mins are distributed in the U.S.A. by Diamond Shamrock Company.
From Amsterdam, I went to Switzerland where I visited a flavor company that has a method of pro ducing a synthetic meat flavor all of its own. It is a unique method. One of the ingredients is glyce rine. Glycerine can be derived from three sources; vegetable oil, animal fats, or petroleum. Shell Oil Company is a major producer of glycerine in Eu rope. This flavor company uses glycerine from Shell Oil Company exclusively; it is derived from petroleum, of course. The distributor of this syn thetic meat flavor in the U.S.A. is J. Manheimer, Inc.
In Switzerland, my wife and I spent the weekend in Grindeiwald in the Alps. In this beautiful city, there is a Kosher hotel, under the supervision of a Rabbi from Geneva. The owners are a religious couple. I visited the Rabbi in Geneva and, unfortu nately, he had no time to talk to me. I called him from my hotel and he invited me to his Synagogue to meet with him and both times, unfortunately, he was too busy to talk to me.
We also visited Luxembourg. Luxembourg, as you know, is a very small country. Most of the

Jews are concentrated in Luxembourg City. The Jewish population of the whole country Is not more than 1,000 persons. I met the Rabbi of the Congregation in Luxembourg City and visited the Synagogue. The Rabbi’s name is Dr. Emanuel Biilz. He is an extremely fine and interesting gen tleman. He told me that there is not a Minyan of Sabbath observers in the entire city. All the Kosher food comes from France or Belgium. Metz, France, which has a substantial Orthodox com munity is very close to Luxembourg. There are classes in the Synagogue which meet a few times a week. These classes are taught by Reverend Fet tman who is also the Chazan of the Shul. It seems to be a very neglected community. On occasion, the B’nai Akiva from Antwerp comes to speak to the youth. Unfortunately, no other group comes to visit.
A half hour bus ride from Luxembourg there is a small health resort called Munsdorf. This city in Luxembourg is famous for its mineral baths. In this city one finds a Kosher hotel that also serves meals. This hotel is also run by religious people. At the time I visited the hotel, there was no Mashgl ach. A mother and a daughter ran the hotel. The hotel is under the supervision of the Rabbi from Metz who is reputed to be a reliable Ray. In this hotel, you can order either a meat or a dairy meal for lunch. This is a rare thing to find in America. But it is prevalent in many hotels in Israel.
From Switzerland, my wife and I flew to Mar seilles. We stayed overnight in Marseilles. We walked around the corner of the hotel to buy some fruit. Neither my wife nor I speak French. We found a fruit store but did not know how to ask for a bag. The storekeeper couldn’t understand En glish. A young girl came over and spoke English with a French accent and asked if she could be of help. After she succeeded in getting us a bag for the fruit, she asked if we were Lubavitcher. It seems she was influenced by the Shlichim of Lu bavitch in Marseilles. She gave us the telephone number of Rabbi and Mrs. Labkovsky who are the Shlichim from the Rebbe, Shlita, in Marseilles. We contacted them and Rabbi Labkovsky picked us up with his car. He took us to the Chabad house which was located in the heart of a shopping cen ter. Both Rabbi Labkovsky and his wife are from prominent Russian Lubavitcher families.
We had time for only a short discussion with the Shlichim when numerous young couples gathered at the Chabad House. Rebetzen Labkovsky taught the women in one room and Rabbi Labkovsky taught the men in another room. These people, I later discovered, were Baalei T’Shuva influenced by the Shlichim. Most of them were professional people. One cannot appreciate the Mesiras Nefesh

of young couples like this one-settling in such far off places and accomplishing so much. We didn’t understandthe language; nevertheless, it was easy and enjoyable to watch these young people absorb Torah and Yiddishkeit with such strong thirst and hunger
From Marseilles we were taken by a car to a small city called Vergez where Perrier Sparkling Mineral Water is bottled. This was the highlight of our trip. After one visit to this plant, it is no longer any wonder why Perrier has become the most so phisticated drink in the United States. Besides be ing a healthy and completely natural drink, the process of bottling is perhaps the most unique in the world. Trucks of sand are brought to the plant and dumped. From that point on until the pallets of cartons of full bottles of mineral water are placed in the warehouse, everything is completely automated. They manufacture their own glass. As soon as the glass is manufactured, it moves on a continuous conveyor from the glass factory to the filling equipment and the filled bottles of mineral water are automatically placed on pallets. Even the pallets are automatically taken to the warehouses, or to the trucks for shipping.
At one time there was concern that carbon diox ide was produced from brewer’s yeast, and there fore, might be a problem for Pesach. The carbon dioxide, however, used in Perrier is absolutely nat ural. It all comes from the ground. Therefore, Per rier Sparkling Water is Kosher year-round includ
irtg Pesach.
The same applies to Waters of Saratoga Springs in New York, and Poland Spring Natural Mineral Water from Poland Spring, Maine. I recently visit ed both these locations.
First, I visited Saratoga Springs which is closer

to New York. This plant is located in a beautiful state park comprising 2,000 acres and is called Saratoga Spa State Park. This Park includes bot tling plant, recently purchased from the State by two wonderful businessmen who, I am certain, will make a great success of this undertaking. The park also includes several mineral baths, golf course, tennis court, picnic areas and other recre ational facilities. I enjoyed sampling different spouting geyser waters shooting up from the ground. Each spring has its own flavor. Our read ers should find this park worth visiting and while there, may simultaneously tour the bottling plant of Waters of Saratoga.
Poland Spring is near Portland, Maine. The Wa-
ter has been bottled and distributed since 1845. The bottling works are also located in a large pri vately owned park. On the grounds there are two large hotels. People come from all over the world just to drink the water from the springs that fill the, bottles of Poland Springs. No two springs are alike and the mineral water from each has its own special flavor. Poland Spring Mineral Water cer tainly tastes different.
As I stated before, all three mineral waters have only natural carbon dioxide in their carbonated drinks. They are all, therefore, Kosher for Pesach.
I wish to extend our best wishes to all our read ers for a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year. K’sivah V’chasimah Tova.
