Three times a day,facing in the direction of the ruins of the Bais Ha mikdosh, Jews throughout the gen erations have prayed for Moshi ach’s (Messiah’s) coming. Today, in the twentieth century, Jewish chil dren have notforsaken the ancient path of their fathers. Despite the mistaken opposition from some quarters, they continue to affirm their hope through singing the song “We want Moshiach now.” At ad dresses on thefirst day of Chanuk ah (to children), Shabbos Chanuk ah, and Zos Chanukah, 5741, the Lubavitcher Rebbe Shlita ex plained why their song is indeed the authentic expression of Jewish faith.

A central tenet of the Jewish tradi tion, from the time of the Temple’s destruction and throughout the sub sequent exile of the Jewish people to the furthermost reaches of the earth, has been the ultimate redemption through the coming of the Moshiach (Messiah). The books of the Prophets are replete with the promises and as surances given by G-d to His people that the gloomy night of the exile will end and the dawn of the redemption will arrive. Recently, this tradition has been perpetuated by children singing a song containing the words “We want Moshiach now, we don’t want to wait.”

Astonishing though it may seem, this innocuous song, composed and sung by children innocent of any guile, has evoked a storm of protest and condemnation from some quar ters. The reasons are manifold and JUNE-JULY

varied, but all have one common theme: the resentment is not direct ed so much at the song per Se, but at its underlying assumption—the need for active effort to bring the Mo shiach.

The resistance, if not outright hos tility to this idea, stems from many reasons, ranging from the blatantly venal to the innocently mistaken.

One of the most common comes in the guise of zealousness and selfless determination to safeguard the tra ditions of our people. It has never been the Jewish approach, runs this argument, to actively exert ourselves to induce G-d to speed up the coming of Moshiach. Our specific duty is to learn Torah and fulfill Mitzvos; and we should leave it up to G-d, in His in finite goodness, to sent Moshiach in the proper time. Indeed, efforts to hasten the coming of Moshiach can have a detrimental effect; they can confuse and distract a person from his Torah study.

A somewhat similar, though less piously zealous claim, is the one which looks on in amazement at all the excitement and tumult regarding Moshiach. What’s so terrible about being in exile? Jews have been in ex ile for thousands of years. We are quite satisfied and content with learning Torah and fulfilling Mitz vos. What are we missing? What more do we need?

Then there are those, who while admitting the centrality of Moshiach in Jewish belief, regard with disdain, or at best indifference, actually doing anything concerning Moshiach.

Such efforts are best left to children and those of a lesser calibre of intel lect. They however, will loftily ponder and muse on the various spiritual concepts associated with Moshiach.

Such an intellectual approach is cer tainly more fittng, is it not? What need then for singing or action?

A more honest, if less noble reason for the opposition to Moshiach, is the unspoken thought of many a Jew who have found a snug niche among the fleshpots of the exile. With a feel ing akin to horror they contemplate the thought of the coming redemp tion. These are the individuals who measure their own self-worth and importance in terms of their rela tionship to others. The honor and deference accorded by others, and the amount of wealth possessed, are the criteria of value. Imagine then the disaster the coming of Moshiach would be. In exile, people are not equal; factors such as social status, erudition, wealth, etc., place people in differing positions. But in the time of redemption all will be equal; all will learn Torah equally from Mo shiach—”No more shall each man teach his neighbor. . . for they shall all know Me.” Wealth will be mean ingless, gold and silver as dust. With what then will such people measure their importance? What will become of the wealth painstakingly amassed during the exile?

Needless to say, the above claims and arguments are all equally spur ious. Far from being antithetical to the Jewish tradition, it has always been the desire of Jews throughout the generations for Moshiach to come as quickly as possible. The singing of “We want Moshiach now” is in perfect consonance with the practice of our fathers.

A simple look in the prayerbook will show this clearly and unambigu ously; provided, of course, that one is conscious of the meaning of the words of the prayers and says them with sincerity. Parenthetically, per haps such people who oppose the above have no time to do so, busying themselves with lofty thoughts, and deep study of the Torah. A strange thing indeed, for the Shulchan Aruch, the Jewish code of law, clearly states that when praying one must 3

both understand and mean the pray ers. Do such people dare claim to know better than the author of the Shulchan Aruch, who was most cer tainly a greater scholar than they?

He too was continually engrossed in Torah study—and yet rendered the above decision.

Further proof needed? Moshe Rabbeinu, the great es sage of all, when receiving the Tor ah, spent forty day and nights. . . in prayer.

To return to the main point, we see that one must understand the mean ing of his prayers. Three times a day, a Jew utters the prayer “Speedily cause the scion of David Your servant to flourish.” The scion of David is the Moshiach. We beseech G-d Himself, as a child asks his father, to cause Moshiach to come speedily. Clear and unambiguous, is it not? For thousands of years, Jews have been asking G-d to hasten Moshiach’s coming. And yet when children sing the exact thing—”We want Moshaich now,” absurd protests flood forth. It is the proponents of such protests who in reality oppose the path of the Shuichan Aruch, of Moshe Rabbei nu, and of all our holy ancestors.

But we have not yet realized all the implications of this prayer. Continu ing in the very same prayer, we say “for we hope for Your salvation the entire day.” No minute goes by with out our fervent hope and desire for Moshaich’s coming. And yet more: After uttering this prayer in the morning, if Moshiach has G-d forbid not yet come by the time of the after noon prayer, we say it again. And likewise, if need be, we say it once more in the evening prayer. Our yearning for Moshiach is constant; and our plea to G-d unremitting.

And yet, despite such clear proofs, despite the words of the Rambam (Maimonides) in one of this thirteen Principles of Faith, which states “I wait for his (Moshiach’s) coming ev eryday,” there are those who still re main removed and aloof. All of the above may be true, runs the claim, but it need not have any actual effect.

Waiting for Moshiach’s coming is one thing; doing something about it is another. Pathetic though it may be, such an attitude is unfortuantely not uncommon. Or yet an even loftier 4

argument: Exile is a time of struggle against darkness, of bringing light to the gloom enshrouded earth. This battle, with its successful moments of triumph, contains an element of exhilaration and pleasure that will be missing in the time of redemption.

For the redemption heralds a time when evil shall be non-existent-”the spirit of impurity I shall cause to pass from the land.” And it is difficult to pass such pleasures up.

These attitudes stem from a basic misconception of Moshiach and his relevance to our everyday lives. This can be best understood by analyzing the words of the song “We want Mo shiach now.” And do not scornfully or contemptuously dismiss it as the mere utterances of children, un worthy of analysis and having les sons drawn from it. The Baal Shem Toy has taught that everything and anything, no matter how small and insignificant, has a lesson for the Jew who encounters it. More need not be said then concerning a song adopted by many Jews, and originat~ ed by Jewish children whose “breatl1 contains no sin.”

The phrase “We want Moshaich now” expresses simply the desire for Moshiach to quickly arrive. But here are many different ways of express ing this besides the word “want”—for example: wish, desire, hope for, long for, await etc. While all express the same general theme—That Moshi ach should come now—subtle differ ences exist between them. For there are varying degrees in, and reasons for, a desire. Consider the multimilli onaire, with his overwhelming ex cess of wealth. Such a person still de sires more, still works tirelessly to in crease his fortune. Or look at the per son who has all his needs, but still wants more, yearning for an excess of riches. And then there is the per son who wishes for things simply be cause they are pleasurable, or be cause another has them and he as yet does not. And finally, there is the de sire for things because they are ne cessities, which one is lacking.

By Divine Providence, children have chosen the word “want” to ex press their desire for Moshiach, and there is a profound lesson to be de rived therein. To understand the dif

ferences in nuance, and the precise connotations of the word “want,” let us examine the same word (or a de rivative of it) in a completly different context. The word is “wanting,” meaning lacking or missing, as in “some details are wanting.” Indeed, the dictionary definition of “want,” besides to desire or to wish, is “to feel a desire for, asfor something absent, needed . . . to feel the need of.”

This then is the cause of the apathy and complacency so preval ent regarding Moshiach. It stems from a basic misconception of their relationship to Moshiach and his coming. He and the redemption are viewed, at best, with the same desire that one would have for any pleasur able thing. Nice to have, adding the final touch to life, certainly worth waiting for—but something we can get along without. No wonder such a person feels no need to do anything to hasten his coming, and remains aloof and unconcerned at his delay.

To such a person we present the clarion cry of “We want Moshiach now.” Moshiach is not a mere addi tional luxury, a future state of bliss to be smugly awaited in complacent serenity. Moshiach is an urgent want, a necessity, as basic as food and drink—without which we are wanting. Can we sit passively by and not do our utmost to fulfill this most basic of wants?

Think not that we are quibbling over mere semantics, and it can have no effect upon the actual outcome of Moshiach’s coming. Our cries of”We want Moshiach now,” our feeling that his non-appearance is a distinct lack, reaches our Father in Heaven.

Then He knows that our pleas for Mo shiach are no mere mouthing of time worn prayers, but a live, urgent request—and in His infinite good ness He responds and hastens the coming. We shall then all of us, “With our youth and our elders, our sons and o~ir daughters” go to our Holy Land, led by our righteous Moshi ach. And the redemption will have come.

JEWIS CHU C ES Reform Rabbis have long made it a practice to invite Christian clergy in to their Temples to address their con gregations. Often these Rabbis take their whole congregations to the church to hear the clergyman’s ser mon in his own natural surround ings. All this is done for the sake of “Brotherhood” and “Goodwill”.

One Reform Rabbi has done some thing even more original—he moved his whole congregation altogether into a church. He ai~d a Presbyterian minister entered into a partnership, and together they maintain in the same hail, the former his Temple, and the latter his Church. In the same hall stand an Ark and a crucif ix. On Friday evening the Rabbi conJUNE-JULY

ducts his communion. Often both groups worship together, each from his own prayer:book, and listen to sermons from both Rabbi and clergy man who jointly conduct their reli gious program.

From the clergyman’s point of view, this curious partnership need cause no surprise—the ideal and goal of every clergyman is to draw the Jews into the Church. It has always been so. The Presbyterian Church, like the Catholic Church, is a mis sionary church; that is, it too be lieves that the mission of Christiani ty is to bring others under its wing.

When the Catholic Church had the power, it drove Jews by force into the churches to hear the priests’ ser

mons, and sent its priests to preach to the Jews in their Synagogues, and they had no choice but to listen. If, then, a Rabbi has appeared on the scene who brings Jews every week in to the clergyman’s Church, it is cer tainly a great triumph for the latter.

But does the Rabbi gain by this?

Perhaps he sees no sin or wrong in it, but does he not fear the danger of taking Jews to the Cross?

The idea goes back to the early days of the Reform Movement. The Pressburg Rabbi of that time, the Chasam Sopher, was one of the bitterest op ponents of this new movement among Jews. He declared that if a Jew should have to pass through a street in which there was a church or 5

a street in which there was a Reform Temple, he should rather choose the former. What would his ruling have been in the case of a street where the Reform Temple is actually inside the church? Since the days of the Cha sam Sopher the Temple has travelled far indeed! The Reform Rabbi claims that this is good for mutual under standing between Jews and Chris tians. It is the decrepit old excuse of the bankrupt hunt for goodwill.

We may well ask: Is it necessary in order to promote friendship between Jews and Christians, that Jews should obliterate the boundaries of their faith so far as to go under the same roof as the Church? We should ask the Rabbi, and have him ask the clergyman, why Christians do not have one church among themselves?

Why do the Presbyterians build their own churches? Why do they not wor ship under the same roof as the Ca tholics, or with other sects of Chris tians? There are about two hundred and fifty different denominations of Christians in America, and each worships in his own church—Why? They are surely closer to each other than Judaism, even Reform Juda ism, is akin to Christianity. After all, they share a common belief in the same Savior; they use the same Bible and revere the same saints. Why does each maintain its own place of wor ship? Why is it only the Reform Jew who surrenders his separateness?

The danger of conversion has be come even more serious from anoth er quarter. Missionaries are an old affliction for Jews, but in recent years they have changed their tactics in two significant ways.

The old policy of the missionaries was to attack the Jewish faith. When they found a Jew who was willing to listen to them, they sought to “dem onstrate” the so-called “falsehoods” of Judaism and the “truths” of their religion, stressing that the Christian ethic stood higher than the Jewish, and so on. In such arguments the Jew would be provoked to answer them—a disputation would ensue, and when it was a scholarly Jew, the missionary would come off the worse.

tian is a strange reminder of a bygone age. To leave the Syn agogue. with its many and great religious traditions, ap pears not only to the Jew but to many a Gentile Christian an act of betrayal. Again, in our age of intense nationalism, when the Christian Faith has been degraded to a tribal reli gion of various ethnic groups, conversion from Judaism to Christianity appears to some Gentiles as an intolerable in trusion. This will become ob vious when we remember that to many Church people to be a Christian is a Gentile preroga tive. In spite of the fact that the Gentile world is increasingly becoming indifferent to the Christian profession, it is still taken for granted that the Gen tile have accepted and the Jews have rejected Jesus Christ. It is thus almost expected of the Jew to remain loyal to the reli gion in which he was born.

“They argued that, like the Frenchman or the Englishman who manages to be loyal to his nation and remain a good Christian, the Jewish Chris tian ought to be able to be both a Jew and a Christian.

“From the national point of view, the Hebrew Christian has no future. H. Loewe’s opinion reflects a fact when, alluding to the Birkat ha-Minim, he says, ‘for the Jewish Christians there can be no hope.’ National continuity of Hebrew Chrisian ity will only be possible when the Jewish people lives its own life upon its own soil, and can afford to grant to its members the luxury of personal convic tion without endangering its separate existence. Until then there is no way out of the im passe. Every effort at a solution must break at the person of Je sus Christ. Only those men for whom to belong to Jesus means more than to belong to a nation are fit for the Kingdom of God.” The best evidence that they are “unwanted” was given to the Jewish JUNE-JULY

convert in the Hitler years. Nazism did not differentiate between a true Jew and an apostate. Belonging to the German Church did not save the converts. They were dragged out of the Churches and flung into the ghettos, and from the ghettos into the gas chambers.

It was otherwise in former days, writes Jocz with nostalgia. In those days Christians received a convert as completely one of their own.

Indeed, when Jews were persecut ed these converts were spared. They needed only to paint a crucifix on their door and the persecutors by passed their house. Often their own children and grandchildren were themselves among the persecutors.

Then the apostate really enjoyed his lot.

But those “good old days” are over, and Jocz the apostate writes: “The position of the Jewish Christian is one of great loneliness. He finds him self excluded from both camps. He is torn between two sides, between the Gentile Church and the Jewish peo ple. This explains why so many prominent Christians struggle against orthodox Christianity.”

And this writer tells us that the Jewish converts wage war in Chris tendom, demanding that Christians return to the old Christianity which was not nationalist, and in which a Jewish convert could feel that he was among his own. On the other hand, he relates how the Christians thrust the convert back to the Jews—as a Christian he should seek the society of Jews and not that of Gentiles. The Gentiles, Jocz writes, argue in this fashion: “Just as the Englishman or the Frenchman is able to be loyal to his nation and at the same time to be a Christian, so too should the Jewish Christian be able to be both a Jew and a Christian.”

For the convert it is bitterly hard to integrate into the gentile environ ment, whether of pious Christians or of wordly Christians, the author complains. “For them,” he writes, “the convert is still a Jew and a bad Jew at that. To the average Christian the Jewish Christian seems to be an alien interloper who has compro mised his soul in order to win some social advancement.”

What is left for the convert to do in such circumstances? Jocz goes on: “The natural reaction of the Jewish convert is therefore the following: he seeks a way back to his own people.

This struggle for a place in Jewish life marks the difference between the present-day Jewish Christian and the convert of former times. The lat ter pulled in the opposite direction, toward the gentile.”

For this reason the modern Jewish apostate builds his nest nearer to Jews, often in the very heart of the Jewish neighborhood. In several cit ies in America there are already con gregations of apostates who call themselves Hebrew Christians. One is in Chicago and that Church is called “First Hebrew Christian (Pres byterian) Church.” The others are in Detroit, Philadelphia, Miami, Los Angeles, and Bridgeport, Connecti cut. They observe the Christian festi vals but they also maintain the Jew ish Holy days. After aIl, they argue, the first Christians were also Jews who observed Judaism; and their modern descendants in America wish to restore the Christian crown to its old glory—these Jews will show the Christians what true Christiani ty is! And so, as stated above, they keep the Jewish Holy days too, but they give them a Christian interpre tation. Thus for example, they light Chanukah candles, but for them the Chanukah miracle is the founder of Christianity, and the candles are a symbol of the latter who calls himself the “Light of the World.” On Rosh Ha shonah, they blow Shofar just as Jews do, but whereas Jews regard the Shofar as a symbol, among other things, of the binding of Isaac, they look upon it as a symbol of the cruci fixion and the binding of the founder of Chrisianity.

They call their Churches “Churches according to the Jewish Ritual.”

Such is the new danger of the old evil called conversion and converts.

Put briefly, the implication of this si tuation is that the Church has estab lished itself firmly in the very heart of American Jewry.

But it would not have taken such hold on Jews if Jews were firm in their Judaism.

CHOCOLATE, LICORICE, EGG MATZOH, LABELING

In the United States and several other countries, the law requires that a product which is labeled as chocolate not contain any hydrogenated fats. The only ingredients that may be used in chocolate are cocoa, cocoa butter, chocolate liquor, milk, creamery butter, sugar, lecithin and flavors. If hydrogenated fats are used, one is not per mitted to refer to the product as chocolate.

The law is not the same, however, in The United King dom (England) and the Scandinavian countries. These countries may use as much as 5% fats arid call the prod uct chocolate. I have just returned from factories in Eu rope where they use fats. These fats are produced in the same equipment as whale oil and animal fats and the equipment, of course, is not kosherized. These so called chocolate candies are sold in America as chocolate though this is not legal.

Some time ago, I wrote about a licorice company in Sweden that uses a release agent manufactured from whale oil. This ingredient is not listed as an ingredient because It is used only to smear the pans and the tables so that the product will not stick. Substantial amounts of this non-Kosher oil is being used as a smear on the candy and on the pans in which the licorice is being cooked. We know that this licorice is imported into the United States and this licorice Is served to children atBarMttzvah par-

1. New Zealand lactic casein—indeed all New Zea land caseins—are made solelyfrom cow’s milk.

2. We make two classes of lactic casein. One is made specificallyfor kosher use in the United States andfac tories producing this item are spec~flcally certified by the Rabbi of the New Zealand Jewish Congregation.

There is only one item used in or around this product, other than cow’s milk, which has any animal cleriva tive. This is an ant~foam agent which contains less than 1 % of an ingredient which itself contains 1 ½% of glyceryl-monostearate. The total product is used at abo utfive parts per million of the milk and the eventual proportion of glyceryl-monostearate in the casein amounts to about two parts per one hundred million even (fall of the material became incorporated into the casein, which does not we believe happen in practice.

At this low level, it is considered by Rabbis in New Zea land that the product is effectivelyfree of miscellaneous animal ingredients. it is however important to note that only this particular type of lactic casein meets these rather exacting specification, and it must be askedfor spec~fically. Our normal lactic caseinfrom non-certified factories may contain as much as perhaps 0.2% ofgly ceryl-monostearate or equivalent animal derivatives.

This material is commonly used as a processing aid.

Additionally, at such factories common soap may be usedfor cleaning etc.

3. Nofish oil or any other sort offatty oil is used in ca sein production.

4. Spec (fled casein factories in New Zealand do not use other than cow’s milk. Cow’s milk production is ex tremely specialized in New Zealand and is very much more economical than the production of milkfrom other species. There are to be precise a couple offactories in New Zealand where goat’s milk is dried but this is sold at a special higherprice and you can be sure that care is taken to avoid its direct mixture with ordinary milkpowder. In fact special Government licensing is re quired for thesefactories, and special precautions are taken. There is no sheep’s milk dried or manufactured into casein in New Zealand.

New Zealand also manufactures rennet caseui which is normally made using renniri, an animal en zyme extract. Needless to say, this material is never made in kosher certified factories. However, we do make a similiar product in which tile rennin is replaced by a vegetable-derived enzyme. Againfactoriesproduc ing this material are spec~fically certified and super vised.

February 1981 Dear Friends, At this time,just before Pesach, lam writing to see if your organization can help to resolve a perplexing si tuation in Jewish l~fe.

For this past number of years, I have been noticing statements (or the lack of them) on boxes of egg, whole wheat and chocolate covered matzohs that are put out by the various companies regarding the eating orprohi bition of their contents. Now, in this primarily English speaking country, a sentence or phrase in Hebrew (or even Yiddish,for that matter) might be d~fficult, if not impossible, to read and understand. Therefore, the main words on thefront and back of the package attest ing that the item is “KOSHER FOR PASSOVER” would sufficefor the majority of American Jews. However, on the sides, usually in small English or Hebrew letters, there are certain words that need to be put into a simple formatfor every Jew to understand. Her Historic Grandeur Two biblical books, Ruth and Esther, bear the names of women who typify perfect devotion to G-d and their people. Therefore they have won eternal renown. Like them, women have always occupied a place of importance in every epoch of our long history. Miriam led her people in song and Deborah, the prophetess, led them to victory. At the Revelation on Sinai, too, woman stood at the side of man as his helpful mate. Holy Writ partIcularly expresses the senti ment of woman’s worth in the com mand to Abraham, the first Hebrew: “In all that Sarah sayeth unto thee, hearken to her voice.” Herein was emphasized the place of the Jewess in Jewish life; on this basis, too, did rabbinic authorities declare that “a man’s home is his w~fe.” Bayso Zo Ishto (Mishna Yoma I, 1.

Her Place in the Home A most beautiful image of the good wife and mother is protrayed by So lomon in the last chapter of his Book if Proverbs; this praise of the “esheth hayil”, is recited every Friday night before the Kiddush. It is the woman 12

With her blessing of the lights, she ushers in the Sabbath peace. There by, the religious illumination of the home is enhanced. “Her lamp goeth not out by night.. . She openeth her mouth with her wisdom; and the law of loving-kindness is on her tongue. . . As a woman thatfeareth the Lord, she shall be praised.”

Since the foundation of the home rests on her, responsibility for the observance of the laws of purity was given to the woman. She was to be the “woman of valor,” the good wife and ideal mother: “Her price is far above rubies. The heart of her hus band trusteth in her, and he hath no lack of gain. She doeth him good and not evil all the days of her l~fe..

She looketh well to the ways of her household and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her saying, ‘Many daughters have done worthily, but thou excel lest them all’” (Proverbs 31).

Rome fell because its civilization had disintegrated; home and family were utterly disregarded. In Juda

Among the benedictions recited at the beginning of the Daily Morning Service is one for women: Blessed be Thou, 0 G-d, . . . Who hast made me according to Thy will.” This phrase does not suggest that in Judaism men enjoy superior privilege over women. Each sex is supreme in its own sphere. Women have certain gifts that men do not possess. Hence, they are assigned those duties for which Providence has best fitted them. The liturgic phrase implies the gratitude of women for the opportu nity afforded them to be free to fulfill the “will of G-d” by upholding the sanctity of the home and observing their own special duties. In this same sense rabbinic tradition, in com menting upon Eve’s creation from Adam’s rib, emphasizes that “an added understanding (womanly in tuition)” was given to man’s mate, to be utilized for the perfection of the Jewish home environment, of which the woman is the mistress. It is also expressed in the verse, “The wise among women buildeth her house.”

(Prov. 14, 1).

The Sanctity of Jewish Marriage The Meaning of Kiddushin The keyword of Jewish marriage is kiddushin. It means sancttfication, and separationfrom things impure, to prevent sex intercourse from de generating into mere animal lust.

Judaism recognizes the sacred na ture of wedlock and prescribes conti nence even in marriage. It categori cally demands self-control, discipline and right conduct in the most inti mate relations. By reverent guidance Jewish men have been taught re spect for their mates, and Jewish women have been given protection from uncurbed passion. Both are thus taught to view marital life under the aspect of holiness, making for permanence and happiness in ma trimony.

THE JEWISH HOMEMfiJ(ER

The Ideal Marriage In the view of Judaism, marriage is not a legallz&l .concession to sex passion. It implies more than the plighting of the troth, màre than a le~ gal statute, more than the giving of the ring which joins hand and hand, It is a symbol of union of hearts. Man and wife are but “two halves of a sin gle soul;:’ united in an ever sacred partnership blessed by G-d. This may be expressed in the Hebrew nu merical equivalent (gematria) of Ahava—love and Echod—one. True love leads to a unison.

The Purpose of the Marriage Laws For Kiddushin, I.e., sanctified marriage, various regulations have been given to the Jewish woman, to govern her relations during and after the menstrual period. They are de signed not only to shield her from sexual excesses on the part of her husband, but also to bring about mutual happiness. These laws of ab stinence, until her ritual purifica tion has been fulfilled, bring about emotional readjustment, and temper the sex habits of the male. They pro vide rest and recuperation for the woman—making cohabitation al ways afresh experience. As Dr. H. W. Long put It (Sane Sex Life and Sane Sex Living, p. 94): “Let married peo ple understand that the key to mar ried happiness is to keep on courting each other.”

The Special Duties ofthe Woman Three commandments are specif ically enumerated for women, by the Sages in the Mishnah of the tractate Shabbat: “the laws ‘regulating the period of’ ‘separation (Niddah) the consecrätloñ of the ‘first cake of dough (Challah) and the lighting of the Sabbath lamp, (Hadlakas Han: ncr).” By the observance of these commandments of the home, ideal family life, charity, and the Sabbath are strengthened, leading to the goal of every wdman!.~_dom~estic peace and happifle~s.

The Raison D’etre of the Laws of Niddah We are here concerned with the first precept only, the LAWS OF PUR JUNE-JULY

ITY. These ultimately bring about al so the observance of the other two.

This ordinance is based on the Scriptural readings in Lev. XVIII, 19 and Lev. XX, 18. These verses stress that one shall not have relation with a woman during her period of sepa ration (Niddah) when she is im pure, and also that the punishment for the violation of this command ment is extermination from one’s people (Kores). Interestingly, the di vine punishment is similar to that which is meted out in the case of the violation of Yom Kippur or Pesach.

Because of its severity, it is impor tant for the husband also to befa rniliar with these laws,for its is his responsibility as well as hers.

It has been ascertained that these regulations have rendered the most intimate and tender personal rela tions also the highest’and noblest ex perience of life. The observance of these precepts has become the very center of Jewish moral family life.

They are the source of modesty, re finement, self-control, and also the means of bringing up a strong, healthy generation. Jewish religious discipline in marriage is thus a safe guard against and a cure for many disadvantages, dangers and pitfalls of married life.

It is to be recalled, in historic per spective, that all biblical rules of ritu al immersion have not been con tinued in halakhic observance, ex cept that appertaining to purifica tion from the menses, because of its deep significance to the purity of Jewish womanhood and the mainte nance of the spiritual integrity of the Jewish home. * * Ritual Immersion for Conversion is a rabbinic ordinance, whereas for Niddah it is precisely biblical.

A Glossary of Family Purity NIDDAH means “separation.” It al so designates the menstruant wom an who Is forbidden to have any inti macy with her husband until after her ritual purification. The term is so used in this volume. The laws of sep aration are based on Lev. XV, 19-24, and an entire tractate in the Talmud is devoted to the amplification of these rules. A Niddah remains in that state until she performs the pur

ification and the ritual immersion.

TAHARAH—means purification, and TAHARAT HA-MISPACHAH—is “Family Purity,” the aim and the blessing of every true Jewish home.

MIKVAH—is the traditional ritual font or Ritualarium.** TEVILAH—is the act of ritual im mersion, the final process of purifi cation from Niddah.

BEDIKAH—is the internal exami nation by the woman.

THE “SEVEN DAY PERIOD”—ref ers to the seven prepatory days prior to Mikvah immersion, during which time no menstrual flow occurs, as de termined by examination. It is also called y’mai n’kiyim, pure or clean days.

Medical Aspects of Niddah All of G-d’s laws are given for the benefit of mankind. The spiritual perfection attained by those adher ing to the laws of our Torah is not at the expense of good health or physi cal comfort. Indeed although the truths of our Torah way of life do not require the approbation of the scien tific community to justify their value, many men of medicine have written of their appreciation of the sound medical practices Inculcated in the Jewish housewife by her observance of the laws of Niddah.

It has often been suggested that the ancient Jewish laws of purity conform to many standards of hy giene of our own day. Historians as cribed to these laws the actuality that, throughout the ages, Israel has been preserved in health, vigor and happiness. The immunity of the Jews to many medieval plagues and modern disease is often attributed to their observance of the Purity Laws and to the fact that in accordance with them they led a clean sex life.

Some physicians have noted that a toxic substance is present in the blood serum, blood corpuscles, sali va, sweat, milk, tears, urine and other secretions of women at the time of menstruation. Melachah’ and Work ‘Work’ or, to use the Torah’s own term ‘melachah’, is not identical with physical strain or exertion. This is shown by the simple legal fact that you are not a Sabbath breaker if you carry a very heavy load inside your house, but if you carry even a small book from your house into the street, you would be profaning the Sabbath.

Nor is it true to say that what the Torah forbids is merely the carrying on of our everyday occupations. The Sabbath laws include this, but they include far more besides, and it is clear that they must be based on a different principle, which we will now study.

The Idea Behind Melachah The Sabbath testified that G-d is the supreme Creator of heaven and earth and all they contain. Man, however, is engaged in a constant struggle to become the master of G-d’s creation, to bring nature under his control. By the use of his G-d given intelligence, skill and energy, he has in large measure succeeded in this. He is thus constantly in danger of forget ting that he, too, is but a creature created by G-d, and that man is in complete dependence on the ‘Lord of all things.’ He tends to forget that the powers he used in his conquest of na ture are derived from his creator, in 14

whose service his life and work should be conducted.

Israel’s Task In a world increasingly forgetful of G-d, Israel was entrusted with the task of preserving this all important truth for the future salvation of all mankind. G-d willed, therefore, that the Jew, while subduing and con trolling his environment like every other human being, must recognize, and show that he recognizes, that his powers are derived from One higher than himself. This recogni tion he expresses by dedicating one day in every week to G-d, and by re fraining on this day from every activ ity which signifies human power and control over nature.

Renounctng Mastery On the Sabbath the Jew refrains from all acts of ‘creation’ and in this way proclaims G-d as the source of all power and pays homage to the Crea tor.

The essential characteristic of hu man creativeness is the intelligent purpose which directs It. This Is the basis of the fundamental halachic principle which forms the basis of the whole of the Sabbath law: ‘me lechet machashevet asserah Torah’; i.e. “The Torah forbids as ‘melachab’ the fulfillment of an intelligent pur pose by practical skill’.

This will explain the principle which says that any act of pure de struction, however strenuous, is not a melachah. Thus, if one were to knock down a house simply to de stroy it, he would not be doing a me lacha. (Although this would hardly be a recommended way of spending Sabbath, and the act, in any case, would be prohibited under rabbini cal safeguarding legislation). If, how ever, one were to do precisely the same act with the constructive pur pose of clearing the site for rebuild ing, one’s act would then be a mela chah.

From this, we see clearly that It is the purpose that counts and the me lachah-act can only be an expression of human creative intelligence if that purpose is constructive.

Melachah includes any activity of a constructive nature which makes some significant change in our ma terial environment—(Significant that is, in relation to its usefulness for human purposes). Any act, how ever small, which demonstrates man’s mastery of nature is a mela chah, be it striking a light or wash ing clothes, tying a knot or building a house.

A melachah is: an act that shows man’s mastery over the world by the constructive exericise of his intelli gence and skill.

Eloquent Restraint In the light of this explanation, we can easily see how childish is the much-repeated argument that it is “not work” to switch on an electric light, or to write a word. As if the us ing of electricity were any less a con quest of nature because it happens to be effortless! Or, as if writing a word were any less a manifestation of man’s creative power because it seems so simple!

Actions speak louder than words.

By his complete renunciation of this type of activity on this day, the Jew solemnly affirms that It is only by the will of G-d that man has “dominion” (control) over all the earth and that G-d alone, is the source of all crea tiveness.

We now understand why cessation from melachah is the essential re quirement of Sabbath observance.

B. Safeguarding the Sabbath The Categories of Melachah Jews at all times have sought ways and i~neans to protect themselves against unintentional Sabbathbreaking.

The Rabbis have done this by enactng protective legislation; the method known as “erecting a fence about the law” (“seyag la-Torah”). A prohibition of this kind is called a “gezerah” (rabbinical decree) or with special reference to the Sabbath laws, a “sh’voos”.

This concept is based upon Divine commandment.

“And concerning all that! have told you, you shall take measures to guard yourselves.”

“And you shall safeguard that which I have given into your charge.”

These Gezeroth are as binding up on every Jew as the Torah itself.

Moreover, since in every case the rea son for the decree lies in the frailty and forgetfulness of human nature, they must remain binding for as long as human nature remains un changed.

Our Rabbis have restrained us in this way from doing on Sabbath many acts which, although not themselves melachoth could very easily lead to our doing melachoth.

This may be either: JUNE-JULY

a) because they outwardly resem ble melachoth, and so can be easily confused with them; or b) because they are linked with me lachoth by habit in everyday life; or c) because the act itself normally involves or easily leads to a melachah practice.

Tearing up a piece of paper is an example of the first kind. It is not a melachah—the constructive “mela chah character” is lacking, but is very much resembles a melachah e.g. the cutting material to a required shape. It is therefore, prohibited as a precautionary measure. Our Rabbis, with their deep understanding of the human mind, clearly saw that if we were allowed to do one type of activity that is in itself not prohibited, we would very easily be led into doing the other—the real melachah—when the occasion arose.

“Agreeing” to buy an article is an example of the second kind, there is a situation habitually linked with a melachah e.g. writing down a note of the agreement. It is, therefore, for bidden to enter into such an agree ment, even verbally, on the Sabbath.

Climbing a tree is an example of the third type. It very easily leads to the breaking of a twig or tearing off a leaf, pulling of a fruit, etc., any of which is, of course, an actual mela chah.

From here on, we will refer to these three types of “gezerah as a) the ‘resemblance’ type b) the ‘habit’ type c) the ‘conductive’ type C. A Practical Survey of the Melachah Categories Activities which constitute mela chah are classified, for the purposes of the Sabbath law, into thirty-nine categories derived from the various melachoth which were involved in the building of the Sanctuary as de scribed in the Torah. In this classifi cation it is not the physical nature of the activity but its object or purpose that is the deciding factor. This is in accord with the melacha-concept ex plained above. It is above all the pro ductive purpose which gives to the act its distinctive melachah-charac ter.

Let us, for example, take one of

these categories—”sowing”. This unites under one heading such vari ed activities as: sowing, planting, grafting, pruning and watering growing plants. All these have a com mon purpose, the promotion of plant growth—and they are, therefore, in one melachah category.

Take another example, “baking” includes not only boiling, baking, frying, etc., but also industrial activi ties such as smelting iron; temper ing steel, etc. The general principle in this case is—changing the physi cal or chemical state of a substance by means of heat.

AvandToledah In each case, the representative melachah is selected by the “Oral Tradition” (Torah Shebe’al’peh) to give its name to the category. This is the one actually mentioned in the construction of the Sanctuary, and is known as the “Av Melachah”. In the first example cited above the “av” is “sowing”, and this is the name of the category. In the other example, baking is the “av”. the other members of the category, whose sta tus as melachoth is derived from the common purpose they share with the “av”, are known as “Toledoth” (deriv atives). For all practical purposes, there is no difference between an Av and a Toledah. The Torah gives both of them equal status as melachoth, and to do either of them intentionally is an equally grave desecration of the Sabbath.

In the following brief survey a de scription of the type of activity in cluded in various classes will be fol lowed by some of the melachoth fre quently met with in practice, and some of the relevant gezerot.

Category 1. ‘Ploughing’—The class bearing this name comprises every activity by which the soil is made re ceptive for seed or plant; also the removal from the soil of anything that might hinder plant growth.

Melachoth include:—Digging, fer tilizing the soil, removing stones from the soil, levelling the ground.

Gezeroth include :—Strewing sand or ashes on the ground without leveling (an example of the ‘resemb lance’ type of gezerah, type (a) Sweep ing the floor with a hard broom (this 15

is a gezerah of the conductive type —type (C); sweeping leads to pur poseful levelling, which is a mela chah).

Category 2. ‘Grinding’—Every activ ity by which a natural product or other substance is divided (by means of an appropriate instrument) Into small particles, in order to make bet ter use of it.

Melachoth include:—Mllling or grinding corn, coffee or pepper. Fill ing metals. Pounding or crushing substances in a mortar.

Gezeroth include:—Grating veget ables, cheese, etc. by means of a grat er, etc. Rubbing off clots of dried mud or clay from boots or clothes. (a).

Category 3. ‘Baking’—Any activity which changes the state of a sub stance by means of heat, thereby im proving it for consumption or use.

Melachoth include:—Cooking in all its forms. Heating water. Adding ingredients to a boiling pot. Stirring boiling food. Pouring hot water onto tea-leaves or on to tea-essence unless the latter has been kept hot on the “Sabbath-stove”. Melting down any solid (fat, wax, metals, etc.)

Gezeroth mclude: Scalding dried or smoked foods. Drying wood in an oven. Adding cold milk to hot tea, un less the latter is removed from the fire. (i.e. the hot liquid must first be poured into a “second vessel” (e.g. tea-pot,) and form this into the tea cup, to which milk may then be added (a).

The Sabbath Stove. The prohibi tion of cooking does not mean that we eat only cold food on the Sabbath.

On the contrary, no Sabbath is con sidered complete without some hot food.

How is this achieved?—By the “Sabbath-Stove”.

This means that one arranges the stove before Sabbath in such a way that the actual burners are covered, and it is also impossible to regulate the heat on Sabbath. (This is usually done by means of a blech”—a sheet of tin placed on top of the cooker with the edges bent down to cover the con trols.) Hot cooked food and an urn of boiled hot water can be placed on the stove before the commencement of 16

the Sabbath, with the heat adjusted to keep them hot during Sabbath.

Category 4. ‘Sheep-Shearing’.— This comprises ever activity which severs from the human or animal or ganism those parts which serve it as outer covering.

Melachoth include:—Cutting off or otherwise removing (by appro priate means) hair, nails, wool, feathers, from a living organism.

Gezeroth include:—(a) Pulling off nails, etc. (b) Combing the hair. (It is, however, permitted to brush the hair with a soft brush) Category 5 ‘Bleaching’.—This class includes all activities by which gar ments or cloth are freed from dirt, dust or stains, or by which a gloss is Imparted to them.

Melachoth include:—Soaking clothes. Rubbing. Wringing. Iron ing. Removing stains or mud by wa ter or otherwise.

Gezeroth lrtclude:—Brushing clothes, handling wet wash (lest someone come to wring It out); hang ing wash out to dry.

Category 6. ‘Dyeing’.—Any activity which changes the existing color (natural or artificial) of any object or substance.

Melachoth include:—Applylng paint or varnish to wall surfaces.

Applying dyestuffs to clothes. Dis solving colors In water. Mixing or blending colors. Making color reac tion tests In medicine.

Gezeroth irtclude:—Adding color ing matter to food (unless required for immediate consumption). Wip ing fruit juice stained hands on a white cloth. The application of ‘make-up, rouge, etc. is forbidden on Sabbath. (Cosmetics can, however, be obtained which last over the Sab bath.)

Category 7. ‘Writing’.—Comprises every activity by which significant signs are made in a durable manner on durable material.

Melachoth include:—Wrlting, drawing, painting, etc., by pencil, ink or other materials. Embroider ing patterns, letters or figures. Mak ing impressions on wax. Printing.

Gezeroth include:—Making signs of a non-durable nature; e.g. draw-

Ing with the finger on a moist win dowpane; tracing patterns in the sand. Doing anything that is usually accompanied by writing, notetaking, etc., e.g. making appointments, buy ing or selling or agreeing to buy or sell; measuring and weighing; read ing business correspondence; judi cial acts; marriage, divorce, etc.; playing games for money (or prom ises of money), betting.

Category 8. ‘Building’.—This cate gory comprises awide range of activi ties connected with the concepts of structure and form; namely all those which have as their purpose and ef fect: (I) Constructing, repairing, improv ing or making habitable or usable any structure or part of a structure: (II) permanentlyjoining together two or more things so as to make of them a usable whole, and (III) permanently changing the con figuration of any mass or substance for a useful purpose.

Melachoth include: (I) The whole range of building operations. Level ing or smoothing roughness or un eveness in wall or floor. Knocking a nail into a wall. Hanging a door. In serting a window frame or window pane. Erecting a tent.

(II) Fixing together the haft and blade of an axe, or broom handle and broom end.

(III) Digging a hole In the ground for storage. Pressing substances into a mold; e.g. cheese-making; clay mo delling.

Gezeroth include:—Openlng an umbrella.

At first sight it may be difficult for us to see how, for example, ‘opening an umbrella’ is similar to the mela chah as described. A little reflection, however, will reveal to us something of the depths of our rabbis’ formula tion of gezeroth. In fact, In this exam ple, besides the similarity In the ac tivity (erection), there Is also a sim ilarity In the resulting structures (the umbrella open; the tent erect), and further, an essential similarity of purpose (protection from the ele ments). We see how the Rabbis pene trated beyond ordinary appearances to the essentials beneath.

It is generally held that ovulation which is the liberation of the mature egg from the female ovary occurs in a normal 28 day cycle between the 14th and 16th day prior to the onset of the menses.

This is, therefore, the most favora ble time for conception to occur. It is not immediately after menstruation, as was formerly supposed (compare Niddah 3 lb).

and the womb becomes fully regener ated. It is therefore conceivable that intercourse during this period may interfere with the process of repair and have a harmful effect on the womb. The abstinence from inter course during the Niddah period les sens the tendency.

Not only was intercourse with a woman during her menstruation period very heavily punished, but the Mosaic law provided that women should be pro tected from intercourse for some days after each period.
