EDITOR AL COMMENT

FAMILY PLANNING

Children are the most cherished Divine blessing known to mankind. “Be fruitful and multiply, and re plenish the earth, and subdue it” (Gen. 1:28) is the first precept and blessing in the Torah. It teaches us that the world was created for the sake of mankind, and that it is a Divine obligation to marry and raise a family, and bring up the children in accordance with the will of the Creator, so that the world will be populated by a human race worthy and capable of “subduing it”—not only physically and materially, but also spiritually; a humanity com mitted to the Divine laws of justice and morality and mutual concern, under the tutelage of our Heavenly Father. A truly blessed home is one that is filled with the joy of children, boys and girls, who are reared In the ways of our first ancestors, Ab raham and Sarah, “to follow in the way of G-d, practising righteous ness and justice” (Gen. 18:19).

Marriage, is a sacred, Divinely ordained, institution founded on purity and sanctity of family life (Taharas Hamishpocho), the observ ance of which is a precondition of true and lasting happiness, high lighted by the blessing of healthy offspring, healthy both physically and spiritually. Each child that is born into the home represents an additional Divine blessing to the parents and grandparents; there are no unwanted children, and no child is a burden, G-d forbid.

Knowing that children are a bless ing from G-d, parents have no rea son to be apprehensive about being able to provide for the child. Surely the Giver of the blessing will pro vide. And “He who feeds and sus tains the whole world” is able to

take care of the children as well as of the parents.

If economic considerations can not justify the limitation of a family, what about a home where the re lationship between husband and wife is in need of improvement; should they hesitate about increas ing the family? We must, again, turn to the Torah for guidance. The To rah teaches us that where a wife, by reason of immodest behavior, arouses the husband’s suspicion and jealousy, thus creating a seri ous disruption of Sholom Bayis (harmonious relationship), but is found innocent of unfaithfulness, she will be rewarded by bearing offspring (Num. 5:29)—as a clear sign of G-d’s favor and greatest blessing. For, children, more than anything else, cement the mutual re lationship between husband and wife and the peace and harmony in their home.

In reality, any such argument for limiting the size of one’s family on grounds of economic, or social con siderations, or postponing having children until the relationship at tains the highest level, and the like, is contrary to the spirit and letter of the Torah. Only in most ex ceptional cases is the use of cer tain contraceptives permitted by Jewish Law—and only a very com petent Rabbinic authortiy is quali fied to rule on whether such an ex ceptional situation does in fact ex ist.

The truth of the matter is that in the overwhelming majority of cases, all the arguments to justify birth control stem from the same source—the Yetzer Hora (evil In clination), that inner tempter, whose function is to distract a man or a woman, from the way of the Torah and test his/her faith in G-d. This wily Yetzer works cleverly. He will not attempt to persuade someone

to recklessly disregard the Divine laws, but will clothe vice in a gar ment of virtue, saying that whatever reprehension there may be in de nying oneself another child, it will be more than offset by being able to devote more time and attention to worthy good causes, communal causes, and the like.

Aside from the religious aspect, experience has shown that couples who take the path of so-called “tam i y planning” a catching phrase that appeals to the sense of order liness and forethought, and pur porting to give parents the right to decide if, and when, and how many children they should have, sooner or later discover to their great dismay, that it has been counter-productive in the very areas of its supposed advantages. The ac tual effects of family planning have been, and are, emotional upsets, frustrations, strained relationship between husband and wife, all of which inevitably taking a toll of ill health. It has caused such couples to seek psychoanalysis, psycho therapy, marriage counselling in an effort, often futile, to straighten mat ters out. Thus, far from bringing orderliness into family life, family planning has caused disturbances and complications in the normal family affairs, with added financial burdens in doctors’ bills, reduced mental and physical efficiency, not to mention the fact that family planning has often proved irreversi ble, and would-be parents eventual ly discovered that the blessing of children, or more children, has, alas, eluded them.

It does not require special per ception or insight to realize that when the normal physical and spir itual process of married life, as de creed by the Creator and Giver of life, is tampered with, distorted, or

AilS e toan I telle tua

Based on a Letter of the Lubavitcher Rebbe shlita

Question: I am at a loss to find answers to such questions as “What is the purpose of life?” and “What is the meaning of a Jew?” Doubts and confusions as to the truth of the Torah and other basic beliefs are troubling me.

Answer: There must be a pur pose:

You write that you have attended college and have studied science. You are, therefore, probably aware of what the approach should be to any intricate problem. If we wish to verify the laws and principles pre vailing in a certain system, we begin by verifying the parts of the system that lend themselves more easily to analysis and verification. When we have, step by step, verified the greater part of the system, we can then safely assume that if the greater part of it has been found to con form to certain specific laws, the rest of it is also ruled by the same laws. Even common sense justifies the assumption that if a certain law holds good in the vast majority of cases, it is true also in the case

where it cannot be verified with certainty.

Applying this approach to the universe as a whole, we are in creasingly convinced, year after year, of the law and order that rules in nature, including inert matter down to the minutest atom and even smaller particles. Nuclear science has discovered undreamed-of har mony and order in the one hundred elements known today. In a uni verse of such orderliness and harmony, obviously man, too, must be subject to order and purpose.

The Creator

Going a step further, the con clusion is inevitable that since there is such law and order in the uni verse, there must be a Higher Au thority responsible for it. The anal ogy is well known: When we see printed books, hundreds of pages long, containing a connected story or philosophy, we cannot by any stretch of the imagination assume that a bottle of ink has been spilled

and has accidentally produced the book. Still less is it admissible that our universe, with its infinite number of atoms, molecules and particles, all arranged in perfect order and harmony, could have come into ex istence by accident. Obviously, there is a Creator and Architect, who arranges and relates all the various parts of the universe in perfect unity and harmony, in conformity to the set of laws which He creates and supervises. It is plain that the whole system is beyond our comprehen sion, since our comprehension, as our existence, is only an infinitely minute part of the entire cosmic order, and certainly in no degree comparable to the Creator Himself. It is clearly absurd to expect to comprehend the Creator, and even more nonsensical to deny His ex istence by reason of our inability to comprehend Him.

The Truth of the Torah

ferent people, under varying condi tions of pressures temperatute, hu midity, etc. (thus eliminating the possibilitY of error or side_effects), it becomes accept~ as a valid law for the future. name of morality, justice or hu manity.

Such an historic event was the Revelation at Mount Sinai, which has been reported in an identical way by millions of people._-mehl~ women, and children; people from all walks of life and backgrounds, who witnessed it themselves, and then faithfully reported it to their children, generation after genera tion, withdUt interrUPti0~~ to this day. At no time, even during the worst pogroms and massacres of Jews, were there less than millions of Jews faithfullY maintaining this tradition. In fact, at no time in our history was there a break in the chain of Jewish tradition from Sinai down to the present day. This makes the Giving of the Torah the most authenticated of all historical events in human history!

The Jew’s Raison d’etre

The Torah has also made pro visions for man’s frail nature, and the temptations and trials which he, as a creature of flesh and blood, faces in life. It is difficult, almost impossible, never to fail. The Torah has indicated that should this hap pen, there is no need •to be dis couraged, for there is always Teshu vah, the return to G-d and to the right path. In fact, the very failure can be made a springboard for a leap forward and ~further spiritual advance.

* * *

Question: If all your explanations as to the truth of the Torah, the purpose of life, etc. are so plain and logical, how is one to explain the comparatively small number of those who conform to the Torah and MitzvOs, while trausgre5s°~s are so numerous?

There is also the additional factor of human nature. When man suc cumbs to temptation and commits a ‘sin,’ he may experience one of two kinds of reaction: if he is honest and courageous, he, will recognize his act for what it is—a failure and a breach of his own true will and conscience. Recogni~~~~g his failure as a sign of weakness, be will seek to overcome it and to do better next time, and “G-d has com passion with, and forgives, him who concedes his mistake and resolves to correct it.”

He who is afraid to face the truth and its ~0~sequenCeS in the case of a failure, begins to find excuses for himself and to justify his nega tive action. Moreover since, “one transgression brings another in its train,” the guilt complex and need for self~justific~bohl will become ever more persistent and presSing~ both in order to pacify his owfl troubled conscience, as well as to square himself in the eyes of others.

So floW we have shown ‘scien tifically’ that the Torah we have and cherish i5 ~~d~given.

The Torah contains not only our way of life, but also the key to our existence for all times, for it is eternal, as its Giver. It is not a book of theory, philosophy and speculati01~~ but a practical guide for our daily life, valid in all places and at all times, including 20th century America. Here, in the Torah, the Written and the Oral Law, the pur S~ pose of man’s life on this earth is ~‘\clearlY indicated. It is, in a nuthell, to live in accordance with the

The answer to this question is also simple enough, as the Torah says, “I see it from my own flesh:” When one reflects upon his own conduct and deeds, particularly in his every-day life (not during peri ods of special spiritual elation, such as during the days of Yorn Toy, etc.), it is clear that a great number of one’s actions are motivated by one’s desires and inclinatiofl5, not by his intellect. This is particularly true where there is no immediate threat of reprisals for one’s bad actions. The farther removed is the threat of sanctions, the weaker becomes the intellectual motive, and the more strongly is one’s conduct influenced by desire and emotion. This is even more true when the sanctions ,are of an abstract nature: for the fear of physical sanctions (imprisonment or fine, etc.) is more effective than admonition or argumentation in the

“Love covers up all offenses,” par ticularly self-love, and “Bribery blindeth the eyes of (even) the wise,” especially the self_bribery that goes with vanity. He will thus be come biased in his own favor, and in his befuddled thinking will devise a personal philo5pphy~ or even a ~ which will not only seem to justify his conduct, but even make vice appear to be virtue.

In conclusion, we trust that the points mentioned will serve as start ing points for you to reflect upon and realize that the world is not confusion. Everything and every body has his place and purpose. If you can free yourself from precon ceptions, environmental influences, and the like, we are sure that in the light of what has been said above, you will, with G-d’s help, discover your own place and purpose in life.

“D-ar Yisroe”

F’nc.sAr, a heT, a

Dear Yisroel:

I was very pleased with your last letter. You Write that Yossi and you have started on a new venture to ~ meeting every Shab bos afternoon to study the Pirket A Vos, the wise sayings of our fath ers. You began, of course, with the first chapter, and there, in the first verse, you found mentioned some of the very things Which we’ve been talking about. But the last few words of the verse do not seem fa miliar and you ask “Just what does it mean to “make a fence around the Law’?”

Actually, these “fences around the Law” are a very important part of our Oral Tradition Unlike the laws and regulatio~5 we’ve discussed thus far, these “fences” represent not direct explanations or derivations from legis1atjo~ found in the Torah. They are, instead, protective mea sures instituted by our Sages to make quite sure that the laws of the Torah Should be Properly ob served and to lessen chances of transgressing any of them.

Whenever our Sages found that people were inclined to neglect a particular Mitzya,’j and that there was real danger that it would be for gotten, they would devise ways and means to safeguard its observance If they found that a particular pro hibitio~ in the Torah was frequently being transgre55~~ they would en act decrees Prohibiting certain ac tivities which, though in themselves allowed, could easily lead a person

to violate a prohibit~o~ set forth in the Torah. To give you just one ex ample, we are forbidden, as you know, by the Torah to put on lights on Shabbos. However, the original Torah says nothing about Our being forbidden to move a light or any object employed to produce such light. Yet the rabbis, knowing how forgetful people can be, forbade us even to move on Shabbos such lights and objects used for making light, because this action could easi ly lead us to forget that it is Shab bos and we might actually start to put on a light, thus transgressjng a Mitzvah of the Torah This is but one of the Countless instances in which rabbis took steps to safeguard the Torah from violation, much like a homeowner builds a fence around his house to keep away all intruders.

To make sure that the home itself is kept safe, the owner builds the fence to mark off a definite area round about the house, Closing that area lest a trespasser enter it and from there gain access to the house.

In the same way, our Sages ordained additional prohibitions to make it harder still for the Jewish trespasser to transgress the law of the Torah itself. We are told in the Talmud that such degrees had been issued even by King Solomon, the wisest of all rulers. Similar decrees, en acted by universally recoguize~ au thorities through the centuries with this same object in mind, are all known as “de-rabbanan~~ or “laws enacted by our Rabbis,” and are

found in the Talmud and in the Shulchan Aruch.

You may well ask, of course, Why the rabbis felt justified in arrogating this absolute Power to themselves. The answer is that the Torah itself always stressed the importance of discipline in these matters and of the role of recognized Torah au thorities in Jewish life. In one place (Deut 17: 1) we are told, “You shall not veer away from their Words, neither to the right, nor to the left.” Elsewhere (Deut 32:7) we read, “Ask thy father and he shall tell thee,” and Rashi comments that in this case “thy father” is not necessarily your real parent, but the prophets who proclaimed the message of G-d to the people and thus Were spiritual “fathers” in a very real sense. (See also Sabbath, 23:1).

And throughout the ages the Jew ish people really did give their spir itual leaders unreserved obedience

The Talmud says that “the Words of the Sages are even more stringent than the words of the Torah,” and “whosoever violates the commands of the Sages is not deserving of life” (Eiruvin 21). Such was the very real authority that the Sages of the Law possessed in Jewish life for centuries

The trouble is that, Particularly Within the past century and a half (that’s about 150 years) there have been a good many Jews who refused to submit to that authority. Some of these said: “We don’t see why every individual can’t take the Torah or leave it as he sees fit. There’s no such thing as one single, authoritative interpreta~i0~ of the Torah.” I might point out here such things had been said by some even in the very remote past, but, usually, such dissident sects have ended up by falling away from true Judaism altogether We, who know and believe that the Torah is the Word of ,/ G-d Himself, could hardly agre’ with such people, for it cert&~

Aside from the religious aspect, experience has shown that couples who take the path of so-called “fam ily planning” a catching phrase that appeals to the sense of order liness and forethought, and pur porting to give parents the right to decide if, and when, and how many children they should have, sooner or later discover to their great dismay, that it has been counter-productive in the very areas of its supposed advantages.

An End to Doubts Answers to a in ellectual

Based on a Letter of the Lubavitcher Rebbe shlita

Question: I am at a loss to find answers to such questions as “What is the purpose of life?” and “What is the meaning of a Jew?” Doubts and confusions as to the truth of the Torah and other basic beliefs are troubling me.

Answer: There must be a pur pose:

If we wish to verify the laws and principles pre vailing in a certain system, we begin by verifying the parts of the system that lend themselves more easily to analysis and verification. Question: If all your explanations as to the truth of the Torah, the purpose of life, etc. are so plain and logical, how is one to explain the comparatively small number of those who conform to the Torah and Mitzvos, while transgressors are so numerous?

The answer to this question is also simple enough, as the Torah says, “I see it from my own flesh:” When one reflects upon his own conduct and deeds, particularly in his every-day life (not during peri ods of special spiritual elation, such as during the days of Yom Toy, etc.), it is clear that a great number of one’s actions are motivated by one’s desires and inclinations, not by his intellect. This is particularly true where there is no immediate threat of reprisals for one’s bad actions. The farther removed is the threat of sanctions, the weaker becomes the intellectual motive, and the more strongly is one’s conduct influenced by desire and emotion. This is even more true when the sanctions are of an abstract nature: for the fear of physical sanctions (imprisonment or fine, etc.) is more effective than admonition or argumentation in the

name of morality, justice or hu manity.

There is also the additional factor of human nature. When man suc cumbs to temptation and commits a ‘sin,’ he may experience one of two kinds of reaction: if he is honest and courageous, he will recognize his act for what it is—a failure and a breach of his own true will and conscience. Recognizing his failure as a sign of weakness, he will seek to overcome it and to do better next time, and “G-d has com passion with, and forgives, him who concedes his mistake and resolves to correct it.”

He who is afraid to face the truth and its consequences in the case of a failure, begins to find excuses for himself and to justify his nega tive action. Moreover since, “one transgression brings another in its train,” the guilt complex and need for self-justification will become ever more persistent and pressing, both in order to pacify his own troubled conscience, as well as to square himself in the eyes of others. “Love covers up all offenses,” par ticularly self-love, and “Bribery blindeth the eyes of (even) the wise,” especially the self-bribery that goes with vanity. He will thus be come biased in his own favor, and in his befuddled thinking will devise a personal philosophy, or even a “Weltanschauung,” which will not only seem to justify his conduct, but even make vice appear to be virtue.

“Dear is oel” FencesA ouno

Dear Yisroel:

I was very pleased with your last letter. You write that Yossi and you have started on a new venture to gether—you’re meeting every Shah bos afternoon to study the Pirkei A vos, the wise sayings of our fath ers. You began, of course, with the first chapter, and there, in the first verse, you found mentioned some of the very things which we’ve been talking about. But the last few words of the verse do not seem fa miliar and you ask “Just what does it mean to “make a fence around the Law’?”

Actually, these “fences around the Law” are a very important part of our Oral Tradition. Unlike the laws and regulations we’ve discussed thus far, these “fences” represent not direct explanations or derivations from legislation found in the Torah. They are, instead, protective mea sures instituted by our Sages to make quite sure that the laws of the Torah should be properly ob served and to lessen chances of transgressing any of them.

Whenever our Sages found that people were inclined to neglect a particular Mitzvah and that there was real danger that it would be for gotten, they would devise ways and means to safeguard its observance. If they found that a particular pro— hibition in the Torah was frequently being transgressed, they would en act decrees prohibiting certain ac tivities which, though in themselves allowed, could easily lead a person

to violate a prohibition set forth in the Torah. To give you just one ex ample, we are forbidden, as you know, by the Torah to put on lights on Shabbos. However, the original Torah says nothing about our being forbidden to move a light or any object employed to produce such light. Yet the rabbis, knowing how forgetful people can be, forbade us even to move on Shabbos such lights and objects used for making light, because this action could easi ly lead us to forget that it is Shah bos and we might actually start to put on a light, thus transgressing a Mitzvah of the Torah. This is but one of the countless instances in which rabbis took steps to safeguard the Torah from violation, much like a homeowner builds a fence around his house to keep away all intruders. Similar decrees, en acted by universally recognized au thorities through the centuries with this same object in mind, are all known as “de-rabbanan” or “laws enacted by our Rabbis,” and are

found in the Talmud and in the Shuichan Aruch.

You may well ask, of course, why the rabbis felt justified in arrogating this absolute power to themselves. The answer is that the Torah itself always stressed the importance of discipline in these matters and of the role of recognized Torah au thorities in Jewish life. In one place (Deut. 17: 1) we are told, “You shall not veer away from their words, neither to the right, nor to the left.” Elsewhere (Deut. 32:7) we read, “Ask thy father and he shall tell thee,” and Rashi comments that in this case “thy father” is not necessarily your real parent, but the prophets who proclaimed the message of G-d to the people and thus were spiritual “fathers” in a very real sense. (See also Sabbath, 23:1).

And throughout the ages the Jew ish people really did give their spir itual leaders unreserved obedience. The Talmud says that “the words of the Sages are even more stringent than the words of the Torah,” and “whosoever violates the commands of the Sages is not deserving of life” (Eiruvin 21). Such was the very real authority that the Sages of the Law possessed in Jewish life for centuries.

The trouble is that, particularly within the past century and a half (that’s about 150 years) there have been a good many Jews who refused to submit to that authority.

Some of these said: “We don’t see why every individual can’t take the Torah or leave it as he sees fit. There’s no such thing as one single, authoritative interpretation of the Torah.” I might point out here such things had been said by some even in the very remote past, but, usually, such dissident sects have ended up by falling away from true Judaism altogether. We, who know and be- ,t’ lieve that the Torah is the Word G-d Himself, could hardly ag9~ with such people, for it cert~

would seem absurd to think that G-d would truly have meant to leave us with a Law of barest outline that no one could understand, without providing for some sort of direct spiritual guidance to help us observe it as it should be observed. This guidance, of course, was provided by the endless chain of tradition that was begun on Mount Sinai and passed from sage to sage, from teacher to disciple, through the gen erations. If that chain were evre to be broken by irresponsible men who would arrogate authority to themselves without being qualified for it by virtue of their generally recognized eminence in piety and learning, the final result would be complete anarchy in Jewish life, the end of true Torah observance and thus, Heaven forbid, the end of the Jewish people itself, for the Jew-

ish people can survive only as long as it observes the Torah given it by Almighty G-d.

Said Maimonides (RaMBaM): “Regardless of whether the things they (the Sages) say are in the name of their own teachers or whether they constitute applications of one rule in the Torah to another such rule or law, regulation or cus tom, it is a Mitzvah to pay heed to their words, and whoever disre gards their words is a sinner.”

“Such generally accepted safe guards as the Sages provided to en sure the observance of a given law cannot be set aside ever, not even by a Beth Din (a Jewish Court of Rabbinic Law) composed of men wiser than the sages who had insti tuted the safeguards.”

In view of what we have said with regard to the importance of

No wife and mother needs to feel chagrined at being dubbed “oldfashioned,” or at odds with modern times and modern culture. What “modern culture”? That which pro duced the Holocaust? The Holo caust of a million Jewish children? Indeed, the answer is: Every Jewish woman should realize, and do all she can to impress upon others, that it is a sacred duty and eternal merit of every Jewish mother to help replenish this horrible void.

Jewish women have a proud tra dition and heritage of being the “Builders of the House of Israel.” Even under the most abject con ditions of slavery under the Pha raohs, with the horrendous decree pf having their boy babies snatched from them and thrown into the Nun, they continued to bear chil ~ and prolifically, even if it meaflt delivering them in the fields. It is this determination that pro duced the redeemer Moses, and the Di~’ine hosts, whom he led to freedoni: freed ‘i not only from physical ,~lavery, but also spiritual

relying on competent authorities only for the proper interpretation of the Torah, it is obvious that any refusal to acknowledge the authori ty of learned men in every genera tion in this respect, or any cession of this authority to men not really qualified to exercise it is every bit as dangerous to the survival of the Jewish people as any outright asser tion that the Torah is not G-d-given but the arbitrary work of human hands. “And we know that a person who maintains that the Torah is not Divine in origin really cannot be called a Jew.”

So you see, dear Yisroel, that we owe a great deal to the “fencebuilders” who made proper use of their G-d-sanctioned right to safe guard the observance of His Torah.

Sincerely,

freedom with the receiving of the Torah at Sinai. Moreover, it is the children of that generation, and of all subsequent generations, that G-d accepted as guararitors that the Torah would be kept and cherished.

I further urge you, all the par ticipants of this convention and all Jewish women everywhere, to take the initiative for a world-wide cam paign to promote Taharas Hamish pocho and to bring the message of true motherhood into every home. Jewish women have historically played a crucial part in the preser vation of our people, and they must do the same in the present critical times.

And in the merit of adhering to G-d’s Plan, all human pIa~ “i and designs against our people, and against humanity in general will come to naught, and we can confi dently look forward to the fulfill ment of the Divine promise, through the mouth of our Prophet Micah (7:15): “As in the days of your exodus from the land of Egypt, I will show you wonders.”

from JEP’s Mitzvah Manual

1. Upon returning from Shul on Friday night we sing Sholom Alei chem and recite the Kiddush as soon as possible. There should be no unnecessary delays, especially if one has guests who may be hungry.

2. Women are obligated in the Mitzvah of Kiddush even though it’s a “Mitzvas Assai She’Hazman Grommo” (a positive precept de pendent on time) because when the Torah refers to Shabbos, it states “Shamor V’Zachor.”

“Shamor” refers to abstaining from the negative commandments. “Zachor” refers to remembering the positive precepts. Just as a woman is supposed to observe the negative precepts, she must also keep the positive ones.

3. “Zachor Es Yom HaShabbos L’Kadsho.” The Torah tells us to remember the Shabbos to keep it holy. Reciting the Kiddush fulfills this command of remembering the Shabbos.

4. If one has no wine, one may make Kiddush on Challah.

5. (A) If Shabbos and Yom Toy follow one another, and one has sufficient wine for only one of the days, it should be used for Kiddush on Shabbos.

(B) If there is sufficient wine to make Kiddush only once, it should be used for the Friday night Kiddush, even though the main Se uda is served in the daytime.

6. A “koton” (under 13 years) cannot me “motzee” (include in the Mitzvah) anyone else with Kiddush, although he may make it for him self.

If there are 2 people at the same table who will make Kiddush, they should not do so simultaneously out loud because those who want to be “yotzai” with the Kiddush would not be able to hear both at the same

(B) If there was a delay until twilight of the next day then the Kiddsuh is recited without Hashem’s name.

15. If one makes Shabbos earlier than the appointed time, he may make Kiddush before “Tzais Hako chavim” (appearance of the stars) but should eat a portion of Challah, cake, etc., after “Tzais Hafiochavim.

16. When making Kiddush, the wine cup should be completely ifiled with wine. The wine should not be spoiled. Wine that was left un covered for a long period of time should not be used.

Wine from which people drank already should not be used. How ever, it may be used if other wine is added to it.

17. The wine cup should, of course, be completely clean. One should not use a cup that cannot stand by itself (i.e., one that must be used with a holder.

18. Kiddush may be recited either

while standing or sitting, dependnig on one’s “Minhag” (custom).

19. When one starts the Friday night Kiddush one is supposed to look towards the candles while hold ing the cup of wine.

20. The cup must be large enough to hold a “revlis” (4.4 ounces) but one does not have to drink the entire amount. Most of the cup is sufficient to drink and one should not take too long in drinking it. If one takes more than 4 minutes to drink it then he was not “yotzai” (fulfilled the Mitzvah).

21. If the person cannot drink the wine, it may be given to someone else to drink “most of the cup”. Although it is customary to divide up the wine arnong the rest of the family, this should be done after someone drank “most of the cup.”

22. One is not allowed to talk between the Kiddush and the drink ing of “most of the cup” unless it has something to do with the wine itself. If one talked after the Kid dush, before drinking the wine, he would have to make the “Boray Pree Hagofen” again but not the entire Kiddush.

23. If he made the “Boray Pree Hagofen,” intending to drink the wine but it fell out of his hand, he must pour himself another cup and make the Brocha again—but not the Kiddush.

If he intended to drink more wine during the meal, he need not repeat the Brocha, since his first Brocha was intended for other wine as well. He should not pause too long, how ever, before drinking the other wine.

24. Other people at the table who are being “yotzai” with his Kiddush are not allowed to eat or drink until he finishes his “most of the cup.”

25. Although it is best to make Kiddush on red wine, one may also use white wine, wine made from raisins, cooked wine or grape juice.

26. The Brocha made on the wine during the Kiddush is meant to include all the other wines drunk during the meal. There’s also no need to recite a “Brocha Achrona” (Blessing after food) since the “Bir kat Hamazon” (Grace After Meals) includes that.

27. If there is no wine for Kid dush one may recite it on the Chal los.

Tapping Yiu nerg eso rcs

from: “Secrets of Growing Young”

Have you ever remarked admir ingly on some handsome and vigor ous sixty-year old and wondered, “Where does he (or she) get all that youthful energy?”

The answer is, from the same in ternal fountain of youth shared by everyone. All of us possess energy resources that we fail to tap to their fullest extent. “The human individu al lives far within his limits,” wrote William James, the noted American psychologist. Our organism has “deeper and deeper strata of ex plosible material, ready for use by anyone who probes so deep.”

Then why do we so often hold back, settling for so little when we can have so much?

Mostly it is because we do not recognize the existence of these re sources, bypassing with a taken-forgranted glance forces that could change our lives.

Sometimes it is because of a mis taken belief that we can hoard our energy, store it away for “later on.” But that is like giving up walking or indeed any kind of exercise so that by age seventy we will have conserved sufficient muscle power to turn professional athlete. Of course it is quite the opposite that happens. The more we use our energy, the more freely it flows through our lives.

Now let us look at some of the energy resources available to each of us:

Confidence

Whatever you do well becomes a source of energy, whether it be

your job, repairing a car, baking a cake, playing golf or tennis, collect ing antiques or sewing. Fix these achievements firmly and proudly in your mind. Don’t just take them for granted. Whenever you get de pressed because of some situation that appears to be more than you can handle, switch your mind over to your proven skills and accom plishments. Let confidence unlock your energy.

Love

Do something for others: a word or gesture that dispels their loneli ness or brings a moment of bright ness into their lives; an offer of help where it is needed; in some way, give of yourself. Unselfish love takes you deep wtihin yourself, where lie the sources of youthful energy.

Goals

Set yourself a goal and then push yourself to achieve it. You will dis cover that with sufficient motivation you can work many hours without fatigue, accomplish things you al ways thought outside your limits, for goals are among the most im portant energizers.

Mind Flexing

Acquire new ideas, invite change. Instead of immediately saying, “No,” when someone suggests a work or play project that runs coun ter to your life style, say, “Why not?” Listen, investigate, ask ques tions, and try to be honest with yourself. Should you give it a try? What have you got to lose?

Taking a positive and youthful attitude toward the new and untried

causes you to repeatedly tap your energy sources anew and to strain psychologically to comprehend new realms of experience. And the more new interests you build into your life, the more channels for the re lease of your energy you open up.

Conditioning

Each day, condition your mind and body to fuller energy use. Do a little more than the occasion calls for. Walk a little farther than is customary, take three exercise breaks instead of two.

Even if you don’t feel like it, stand up at the town meeting and make yourself heard. Visit an ac quaintance who is hospitalized, start on that cleaning or repair project you have been postponing. Get into the habit of tapping your resources for an increasingly bigger supply of energy. Expect more energy—and you will find more.

Friends

Reach to others. Share their ex citement or pleasure. Voice your opinion. Experience the sheer “otherness” of friends and acquaint ances. Observe them as if for the first time. Admit to yourself that you feel desire, antipathy, or what ever emotion they arouse in you. Come away from a meeting with another richer in mind and spirit. Discard your shield of indifference and allow others to energize you.

Peace of Mind

For at least half an hour each day ,try to banish distraction, agi

In my last article “Products from the Philippines and Japan” I referred to banana chips produced in the Philippines which are cooked in àoconut oil. Many •companies producing banana chips pràduce non-kosher and Chometzdige products in the same equipment, ~nd in ~he same’ oil that they use to manufacture banana chips. I am happy to say that as a result of my visit to the Philippines I was successful in having supervision removed from èompanies that were ‘selling these pro ducts both as ‘Kosher and Kosher for Passover.

Following the pattern of my last article, I am going to continue to write about new products and my ex periences with Kashruth as a result of the extensive travelling that I do;

Tapping Your Energy ‘Resources.

(Continued from page 10) tation, petty annoyances from your mind. Travel inward alone to the source of joy and’ reflewal. Once more clear the channels of the daily accumulation of impediments that block the flow of your energy.

Sensuous Pleasures

Experience ,the. sensuous world:.’... the sounds of the city between mid night and daybreak; the smell of roasting coffee—or ‘of the countryside after a spring rain; the taste of fresh fruit or,of an exotic sauce~ the sight of tall buildings outline against the sunset or of a tiny garden in bloom; the. touch of fabrics, of carved forms, of a body you love.

The senses refresh,~ ~restore, re vitalize. Through the senses you find your way “back ‘to the primal world, re-e’stablish .the connections that get tangled and broken amid the bustle ‘of ~eyeryday living.

Rewards

As you iicreasingly tap your energy resources, ‘reward yourself along the way. If you walk an extra mile or work an hour. longer, treat yourself at the end to some small indulgence.. Associate energy use with pleasure, the good things of. life. -

Interests

Tap an interestS and you tap an energy resource. You may say after a day of routine work, “I ‘don’t have an ‘ounce of energy left.” But’ develop a strong ihterest in ‘sports, gardening,, collecting, local politics, and watch the change.,

Suddenly you, have tapped a new energy source. Tiredness slips from you. .And for one or, more hours you are buoyantly living as though fatigue were something you never experienced The long-term interest or hobby that recharges you over and over, again is the, most effective,

for it enables you to switch from “boredom” or “weariness” to “ener gy” almost at will.

‘Obligations

Turn obligatory and unpleasant tasks into energizers. We all’ face them—dreary work that just has to be done, confrontations we would do anything to avoid, deadlines we keep moving ahead and ahead.

Avoided or allowed to drift, they build into crises. But face up to these situations, plan intelligently how to handle them, and you ex perience a tremendous rush of ex hilaration. You feel ready for any thing now. The moral is clear: Each time you tap your energy sources with confidence, you emerge with a new realization of your powers.

The Past

You ‘would not be alive’ and re,ading these lines unless you had learned to tap at least some of your energy resources. And if you look back ,on the’ time when, you con quered an illness, lived through a~ bad time, completed a miserable task, managed to fight an uphill battle, to get through school or~ to,, hold your.family together, went out ,of your way to help a friend, you will realize that, without thinking about it, you tapped far more re sources that you would customarily. use.

That you could automatically per form so many energy-demanding ac tions.’over a period of time should give you some idea of the powers at your disposal.

Momentum

“Get goihg”—and you gather’mo-. mentum’. Push yourself to your outer limits in one activity and you gain additional ,energy’ for others. Work at your exercise program consistent ly and you make it easiei~ to develop good eating habits. Impose disci pline on the way you maintain your clothes and you are more likely to improve your posture. Develop your

skill in sports or crafts or macrame and your ability to undertake other projects grows: Every additional activity adds to your self-confidence. Energy thrives on use.

Fun

Fun is doing something for the sheer enjoyment of it. It may be climbing a mountain, putting up strawberry preserves, dancing, walk ing through the city in search of throwaway treasures, dressing up for dinner with a few friends, or spending an evening listening to records that were popular when we were teen-agers.

Whatever it may be, fun triggers a spontaneous release of energy that sends us back to our serious pur poses revitalized and recharged. Now the advice to have fun may appear redundant in the seventies, but the frantic competitiveness and desperation that underlie so many of the activities that are misnamed fun today do more to wear us out than energize us. So discover your own meaning of fun—and then let go.

Beauty

Visit the museums ‘and art galle ries. Look at the paintings and sculpture without bothering to check them in the catalogue. You can get ‘the facts another time. Today, just react, enjoy, see. Return, again ‘to those works that please and intrigue you. Make them part of your mental collection, your “museum without walls.”

Don’t give up after the first visit. Go ‘back several times until ‘art be comes a natural part of your life, a source on which you can draw in moments of ‘contemplation.

Religion

Religion, above, all, is the real source of power to sustain ,you for the duration of your days—to give strength, consolation, energy and ,true happiness.
