Hastening the True Liberation

Our Festivals—like all matters of Torah and Mitzvoth—have general as pects common to all, as well as specific features characteristic of each partic ular festival. The rich and inexhausti ble content of the festivals makes it possible to select certain points which offer pertinent instruction special in any particular time and in any par ticular place.

The above is, of course, true also of Pesach; indeed, even more forcefully, considering that Pesach is the “Head of the Festivals,” and that the Festival of Our Liberation from Egypt marks the birth of our Jewish nation.

* * *

The special importance of Pesach can be seen also from the fact that it is one of (no more than) two positive commandments (Mitzvos-asseh), the neglect of which carries the penalty of Kores (“Cutting off” of the soul), G-d forbid. These Mitzvos are: Miloh (Circumcision) and Korban-Pesach. The two are closely interrelated, for a per son who is not circumcized is precluded from offering the Korban-Pesach. Of the two, Pesach is even stricter, for while in the case of Miloh the obli gation to perform the circumcision re mains also later, the Korban-Pesach had to be brought only in its pre scribed time, and not later.

In a certain aspect, however, the

Korban-Pesach differs entirely from all other Mitzvos and sacrifices. It is the requirement that not only the father be circumcized, but that also his chil dren likewise be circumcized. Should he have a son whom he had not cir cumcized and thus not entered into the “Eternal Covenant” with G-d, then he, too cannot offer the Korban Pesach! * * *

To be sure, the offering of Korbo nos, including Korban-Pesach, is limit ed to the Beis-Hamikdosh, and will be renewed only when the Beis-Hamik dosh will be rebuilt by our righteous Moshiach. However, it is well known that all matters of Torah, by virtue of its eternal nature, contain clear and practical instructions in our daily life, at all times and in all places.

* * *

The festival of Pesach, so named after the Korban-Pesach, emphasizes the importance of Chinuch—the proper rearing of Jewish children. As a matter of fact, one of the underlying motives for the whole Seder is to educate the children—each and all of the children. This can also be seen from the Hagga da (“Here the child asks the ques tions,” “Of four Sons the Torah speaks,” “And thou shalt tell it to thy son,” etc.). However, the Korban-Pe sach emphasizes most forcefully the extent to which Jewish education

affects not only the child but also the parents: If parents fail in their duty to their child, and no not bring him into the “Eternal Covenant” with G-d, to the degree of it being engraved not merely on the child’s soui, but also in the body (as it is written, “And my covenant shall be in your flesh for an eternal covenant”)—then, not only do they, G-d forbid, deprive their child of the Eternal Covenant and of all the blessings that go with it (and with the Korban-Pesach), but the parents, too, forfeit the opportunity of offering the Korban-Pesach, together with all the things and blessings associated with it, both material and spiritual; specifically the benefit spelled out in the Torah: “It is a Pesach unto G-d and I will pass over you (or I will have mercy on you) and shall not let the destroyer (plague) enter your houses to smite.” This is G-d’s assur ance of mercy and protection even in a world afflicted with ills, physical or spiritual; the Jew who properly ob serves the “Korban-Pesach” is prom ised that such ills will “pass over” him and his house.

* * *

At the time when the children of Israel were in Egypt, the Korban-Pe sach protected their houses against the Destroyer (Plague) raging outside. Only the firstborn were threatened then. But in our day and age, when Jews everywhere are still in Golus, in a physical as well as a spiritual Golus, some Jewish parents have unfortun ately disregarded the Korban-Pesach, the first prerequisite of which, as stated in the Torah, is: “withdraw and take unto yourselves,” meaning, “withdraw from idolatry (foreign ide ologies) and cleave to Mitzvos.” Con sequently, the Destroyer finds an open door to these houses, seeking victims to lead astray, G-d forbid, and not discriminating whether they be first born or not, boys or girls. The plague has spread to many Jewish homes, (Continued on page 14)

ISRAEL LOST

In my childhood I saw things that no doubt you will never see. My father was a Zaddik following the Scriptures, and my mother the joy ous priestess of her home. At that time religion was mingled with every act of life, but in so simple a way that I saw no religion in it.

I found it quite natural that in the morning my father enveloped himself in a white shawl with black stripes, and wound bands of leather about his forehead and his left arm, while murmuring words which were not mere words. The blessing after meals seemed as much of a necessi ty to me as the meal itself, and on Friday night there seemed nothing unusual in seeing my mother extend her hands, which had become trans parent, over the wicks flickering in the oil.

All that governed the kitchen was hierarchically regulated. One must not eat butter after meat, nor use a knife to cut the chicken which was to be used for cheese; two vessels were used, one for meat and the other for milk-foods, and to confuse them were a sin.

When a goose arrived from Strass burg it bore around its neck, upon a red seal, signs which fomented archaeological controversies around the kitchen sink, because it was im

portant to my mother and to Lisette the cook, to establish by careful scrutiny at what hour of which day the animal had been bled, and if it were lawful to metamorphose it into delicious food.

Ham, oysters, crabs, game, had but a nominal existence; their taste was unknown to me, as were the color and form of these forbidden foods.

To have entered a tram-car on a Saturday would have seemed as ven turesome as to ascend to the moon, and to blow out a candle on that day as unthinkable as to blow out the sun.

Certain rites—but what a cere monious word for these familiar acts—returned each year as nor mally as did the seasons which they accompanied; there was the waving of the palm with a perfumed citron, or a row of lights on a board, ar ranged in decreasing sizes, which were lighted from the smallest to the tallest.

Once every year I ate alone at noon, and my brothers, who were old enough to fast, returned from the Synagogue with wan faces whose pride I admired.

At other times my mother and old Lisette went on a hunt into all the corners of our home, and into all the pockets of our clothes search ing for crumbs. The round loaf on the table ceded its place to thin cakes without leaven. At dinner my father, his hat upon his head, chant ed Hebrew melodies. Bitter herbs and mortar were passed from hand to hand, four cups of wine were drunk, and the door was left open for someone who did not enter.

I did not understand what all this meant nor did I ask about it of others or of myself. I only felt one thing—that the faces of my parents had at these times a radiant joy and serenity that I have not seen since, except in the pictures of the greatest of the saints.

It was not only impure foods that were forbidden; other inhibitions forbade lying, laziness, gluttony, coarseness, spitefulness, every man ner of evil; and the spirit of unity, of kindness and of love as obviously held sway as did the customary do mestic acts. Morals were not dis cussed, rarely mentioned. They were practised. They were as much a part of life as were our daily habits. I never heard a word that was not tender and gentle between my parents. To lie before them, to use an ill-sounding or querulous expres sion, would have been unthinkable. A gentle but firm justice punished our faults and rewarded our will to do well. The example of toil and of thrift taught us every hour of the day. Pleasure had its place but was not an end in itself. Charity was practised as a natural function. My father was frequently consulted, dis putes were submitted to him, and so much of peace emanated from him that adversaries who came to consult him left our home recon ciled. Perfect manners, goodness of heart and highmindedness illumined our very humble home to which one climbed by ascending a somber stair case.

Then there was G-d; we lived with G-d, but His presence was subconscious, never spoken of. I did not hear the mention of His name; I only uttered it during the evening prayer which my mother, or even Lisette, bade me repeat be fore tucking me into bed. It was a very brief prayer; a few words in Hebrew which I repeated without understanding their meaning, and then a single sentence: “G-d protect Father, Mother, and all those I love.” Yes, it was a short prayer, and yet this it was which caused the undoing of my respect for the family-worship.

THE LA

SOFP SACH

1. Getting the home ready for Pesach is a process that starts long before the holiday. It includes removing chometz products and dishes, and a thorough cleaning of the house. This is climaxed on the evening before Erev Pesach, March 30, when we conduct the final Search for Chometz. The Search must be conducted right after night falls, and there should be no eating or working that might distract us, for a half hour before dark.

2. We take a single paraffin candle, a wooden spoon, and a feather, and some receptacle to hold the chometz that we may find in our search; it may be a bag, box, or a piece of cloth. Ten pieces of bread are placed through out the house, and we recite the b’racha:

Blessed art Thou, 0 Lord, our G-d, King of the Universe, Who has sanctified us by His command ments and commanded us to remove the chometz. With the candle lit, we carefully search every room, and whatever area of the house that may have in it any cho metz, such as the basement, attic, the family car, and the garage. Pockets in clothing should also be checked —especially the children’s. There must be no talking to distract us during the search. Whatever chometz we find should be pushed with the feather into the receptacle, and when the Search is over, we renounce ownership of any chometz we may have overlooked, by reciting the Kol Chamira formula from a Siddur, or saying the following:

Whatever manner of chometz that is still in my possession, which I have not found or removed from my domain, is hereby declared to be as dust and ownerless.

Everything used in the Search, plus the chometz found, should then be securely bound up, and put aside for burning in the morning. Food intended to be eaten in the morning, should also be carefully put aside. The Search should also be conducted in a place of business to be certain no chometz remains.

On Erev Pesach morning we burn the chometz which has not been sold no later than 10:54 a.m. and we repeat the Kol Chamira. The Kol Chamira—whatever language is used—must be a conscious declaration in order to be valid. If you are not going to be home on Erev Pesach, make the Search for Chometz, the evening before you leave without reciting the blessing.

What May and May Not Remain in the Home

No actual chometz, or food containing chometz, may be in the home from Erev Pesach until the end of the Yom Toy. Vessels which have not been kashered (see the laws of kashering, below) should be thoroughly cleansed of any trace of chometz, and put aside in an inaccessible place. If possible, all chometz utensils, and other items which are included in the Sale of Chometz, should be stored in a locked room, and the key put out of reach.

The prohibition against chometz on Pesach is two-fold: we are forbidden to eat chometz; we are forbidden to have chometz in our possession.

Since there would be hardship involved in disposing of our chometz, the law permits us to sell it to a non-Jew for the entire period of Pesach. Since this is an actual legal transfer of ownership, it must be arranged with meticulous care, and it is best to delegate your local Orthodox Rabbi to do this on your behalf. If this sale is not arranged, or if it is not understood to be an actual legal transaction binding on both parties, the chometz remains in your possession and you stand in violation of the prohibition. Because of the severity of this pro hibition, the Sages have ruled that any chometz which remains in the possession of a Jew during Pesach, may not be used at all, nor may any Jew derive benefit from it at all.

No Chametz May Be Eaten in New York After 954 a.m. (8:30 i~rzr~z) On the Morning Before Passover

Following the early breakfast meal, the prohibition against eating chometz is in full force throughout the day before Pesac’~, even for children. Since the Seder takes place that evening we may not eat matzoh during the day, but we may eat foods prepared with matzoh meal until the last quarter of the day. From then on, we may eat no foods, until the Seder; but in cases of need, meat, fish, poultry, or fruits may be eaten. We should bear in mind the need for coming to the Seder table in such a state that we will take special delight in the eating of the matzoh, which is one of the basic mitzvohs of the Seder.

The Laws of Kashering

Wherever possible, special dishes and utensils should be used exclusively for Pesach. Nevertheless, some utensils used round the year may be kashered and then used for Pesach. Use the following procedures: Metal utensils, used directly on the fire for broiling and baking, without liquid added, can only be kashered through “glowing,” that is, placing the utensil on a fire until it glows red hot.

If metal, or wooden utensils, are not used directly on the fire, or if they have been used only for cooking or boiling food, they may be kashered by ha’golah, as fol lows:

* The utensils should not be used for twenty four hours prior to kashering.

* Kashering should be completed by noon, Erev Pe sach.

* The utensils should first be thoroughly scoured and scraped and then completely immersed in a vessel filled with boiling water, and the boiling must con tinue as long as the utensil is in the water.

* If a section of the utensil protrudes so that it is not reached by the boiling water, remove it, and reim merse it so that the part previously not reached by the water is thoroughly immersed.

* You may kasher any number of utensils at the same time, by this process, so long as each one is com pletely surrounded by the boiling water, and not touching the others.

* After removal from the boiling water, the utensils should be washed in cold water.

* If a utensil to be kashered has dents, making that part inaccessible to the boiling water, the dents should first be thoroughly scoured, and if this does not get it perfectly clean, the area with the dents should be placed over a flame until they glow red hot.

* Any vessel may be used for the kashering procedure.

Attention! Only those General Foods Coffees with I on the Label are Kosher for I as over FEBRUARY-MARCH 7

Koshering Glassware

Dishes or utensils made of glass, should first be thor oughly scoured, and may then be kashered by filling and immersing them in water for three days. The water should be changed every twenty four hours for two suc cessive times. Kashering Pyrex is a complicated prob lem, and it is best to consult your Rabbi.

Koshering Dentures

Clean your dentures, put them aside for twenty four hours, and then thoroughly cleanse them with hot water.

Tablecloths

If you use a plastic tablecloth, it must be brand new, since it cannot be boiled as you would ordinary cloths.

Koshering Your Oven

Before kashering your stove, scrub and scrape clean every part of the oven where food can possibly have reached. Then take a blowtorch (you can rent one for the day) and go over the entire oven with the flame. It is recommended that a specially-fitted metal liner be used in the oven, if you plan to bake for Pesach. The rings around the burners on the gas range should be thoroughly scoured and then glowed on the flame until red hot. If you are unable to make them glow, then the metal sheet used for your range should also cover the rings.

Kitchen Appliances

Kashering such appliances as broilers, food mixers and blenders, dishwashers, and others, entails dismantling of motors and other parts and is therefore not recom mended.

Utensils That Cannot Be Kashered

* Anything that would be damaged by hot water; utensils with handles that are glued on.

* Earthenware, pottery, or china.

* Any vessel or utensil that cannot be thoroughly cleansed or scoured, such as grinders, sieves, graters, or long-necked utensils the inside of which cannot be reached with a brush.

* Receptacles used to hold bread or flour.

NONE OF THESE MAY BE KASHERED.

Feeding Children, the Sick, and the Aged

Children should observe all of the laws of Pesach. If a doctor urges the use of chometz for your child, this must be approved by your local Rabbi. If the Rabbi supports

the doctor’s opinion, he (the Rabbi) will explain to you how the feeding should be handled. If there is, G-d for bid, danger to the child, then all is permissible.

All cereals, dry and cooked, are prohibited on Pesach. If the cereal is especially prepared for Pesach, and bears a hechsher from a well-known Rabbi, then your local Rabbi may sanction its use under special circumstances. Egg matzoh, which is prepared with liquids other than water, should not be used during Pesach, except for the sick or aged, who cannot take regular matzoh. Under no circumstances can anyone fulfill the mitzvoh of eat ing matzoh at the First and Second Seder, by the use of egg matzoh.

Using Milk on Pesach

Since Cholov Yisroel is more widely available today, it should be used round the year, and for Pesach. Where it is not available, Gedolei Yisroel permit the use of regular milk, and therefore, under the guidance of Ge dolim, we have arranged to supervise and approve a limited amount of such milk for Pesach. Follow these guidelines:

* Use Cholov Yisroel for Pesach and the year round.

* If, for some reason, you do not use Cholov Yisroel, it is best to buy your week’s supply of milk with a hechsher on Erev Pesach.

* Buy your milk from one of the companies listed in our Kosher Food Guide.

General Rules

Do not allow any food into your home for use on Pe sach unless it bears a hechsher from a well-known Rabbi. If in doubt check with your own local Orthodox Rabbi. If you have any doubts or questions, your local Orthodox Rabbi is eager to advise you. It’s better to ask, and to be certain.

If you are not making Pesach at home, and plan to spend the Yom Toy in a hotel, do NOT rely on such slogans as “Kosher for Passover,” or “Dietary Laws Observed.” There are so many pitfalls in the prepara tion of food for Pesach, that most hotels must be as sumed to be NOT kosher for Pesach, UNLESS you have the assurance of your local Rabbi who knows the owners of the hotel, and can testify to their reliability. Don’t take any risks of unwittingly violating the laws against eating chometz on Pesach. Before eating any thing outside your own home, take the same stringent precautions that you do in your own home. Make it a KOSHER Pesach, and it will be a HAPPY Yom Toy.

T0 Laws-One To

Dear Yisroel:

Yes, I think we’re ready now to go in detail into the actual structure of the Torah.

Actually, within this Torah there are tw.o Laws, and neither of these Laws can be properly observed with out a thorough knowledge of the other.

First there is the “Torah Shebich say,” the “Written Law.” This in cludes all the twenty-four books of what is known in English as the Bible. It includes the Five Books of Moses, (known as the Torah, the Books of the Prophets (N’viim), and the Holy Writings (Kesuvim). As we have already said before, not all these books are law codes throughout. Most of the material in them is history and biography, set down with the intent to give us ideals by which to guide our own lives and to warn us what we must avoid if we are to survive and to live the way G-d wants us to live.

It is the second Law that seems to be the most misunderstood and the most puzzling. This code is known as the “Torah sheb’al Peh,” the “Oral Law,” and yet today it is all set down in writing. And one fails to understand the purpose of this Oral Law, unless, of course, one knows something of its origin.

The “Oral Law,” which can be found written down in the Talmud, had its origins at the same place as did 1he Written Law. You will recall that Moses spent two periods of forty days each on Mount Sinai, listening to the Word of G-d so that he might communicate it to his people waiting for him below. At that time G-d dictated to Moses the laws which are written down in the Torah Scroll from which we read in the synagogue. But these laws are quite unexplicit and, in reality, are just main headings, indicating the need for more detail if they are to receive their proper meaning. Take, for example, the law dealing with Tefillin. All the “written” To rah tells us is that we are to take the words of G-d which He com manded us and bind them as sym bols upopn our hands and between our eyes. All of which does not tell us how to go about carrying out this commandment. We need to know how the words of G-d should be written down on parchment; we need to know how they should be encased so that they may be proper ly protected and attached to our hands and foreheads, what materials to use in the making of the casings, what these casings should look like, and by what means we are to attach

them to our bodies. And similar questions go for practically every law stated in sketchy outline in that part of our Torah which we know today as the Torah Sheb’ksav.

The details necessary for us to know if we are to observe these laws properly were not just arbitrari ly thought up by some old Rabbis. They were also given to Moses, orally, by G-d Himself sometime during those periods which he spent atop Mt. Sinai. These details Moses was not permitted to write down; he was commanded to pass them on by means of the spoken word. Noth ing beyond the twenty-four Holy Books of the “Bible” was allowed to be part of the Written Torah. In addition to these fill-in details, Moses received other command ments which cannot be traced back directly to any one of the Mitzvoth listed in the Written Torah. (These are known simply as “laws received by Moses on Mt. Sinai.” (Halo choh L’Moshe Misinai.) He also was given rules and regulations re lating to the manner in which the Law should be interpreted and applied in practice.

All this information Moses passed on by word of mouth to those best qualified to teach his people. Thus, for generations wise rabbis and teachers would study the Written Torah (Torah Sheb’ksav) with their disciples, adding to these readings and oral lecture dealing with the interpretations and details originally received by Moses on Mt. Sinai. The disciples, in turn, would raise disciples of their own, to whom they taught the Written Torah side by side with the oral interpretation they had originally learned from their teachers. And so the chain went on and on through many generations. No students had ever taken the liberty of making notes on the por tions of the Oral Law which they had learned, for such note-taking had been sternly forbidden them.

10

The Oral Law had to pass from teacher to pupil by word of mouth, not cast in some written form.

But there came a time when the Jewish people were faced with a dire emergency. The Temple in Je rusalem was destroyed and the Jews were driven out of their land, into exile. Their physical security was gone. Even if they had found a tem porary home in some other country, they could never be sure when the king or the emperor of that state would turn against them and they would have to leave. In addition, many of the kings under whose rule the Jews lived in alien lands forbade the establishment of Yeshivoth, or “academies” where the Law would be taught by wise teachers to diligent disciples. With conditions so un settled, it became quite difficult for the Jews to devote all the time they should have to the study of the Law. This state of affairs repre sented danger particularly in the case of the Oral Tradition, which was not set down in writing, and therefore had to be taught and re viewed constantly by word of mouth if it was not to be forgotten.

At that critical time, Rabbi Ye huda Ha-Nassi (Judah the Prince) took action to make sure that no such thing would happen to the Oral Tradition. Rabbi Yehuda was a very learned man, and so thor oughly G-d-fearing and saintly in hi~ personal life that he was known all over the Holy Land as Rabbenu Ha-Kodosh (our Holy Teacher). Taking his “emergency” authority from one specific statement in the Law (Gittin 60: 1), he began to assemble all the teachings that had been handed down from Rabbi to Rabbi through the generations. This was a most difficult thing to do, for the rabbis had come to have differ ing versions as to the correct inter pretation of the Law as handed down by Moses. Rabbi Yehuda sifted through the vast accumulation

of opinions and interpretations, and his phenomenal learning enabled him to distinguish the opinions that carried authority from those that did not.

He put all this material in writing, and, in the end, had compiled an enormous encyclopedia of six vol umes. He call the finished product “Mishnah,” meaning “study” or “learning.” Each volume received a special title to indicate its subject. The first volume is called “Zeraim” or “Seeds,” and includes all the laws pertinent to planting, harvesting and all the other processes of agricul tures. The second volume, “Moed,” or “Times of Holy Convocation” deals with our Holidays and all the other mitzvohs that are dependent on a certain definite time of the year. The third, “Nashim” or “Wo men” has all the laws and regula tions that govern Jewish marriage; the fourth, “Nezikin,” meaning “Tort” or “Civil Damages” contains the provisions regulating business regulations and the settlement of property disputes. The fifth, “Ko doshim,” or “Sanctities” embraces all the rules and regulations perti nent to the Holy Temple and the sacrifices that had to be offered in it. The final volume, “Taharoth” or “Laws of Purity” deals with the distinctions between “pure” and “impure” (“Tahor” and “Tomeh”). Each of these six volumes, in turn, is divided into parts called “Me sechtos.” The Mishna has a total of sixty “mesechtos.”

The style in which the laws and opinions that are part of the Oral Tradition were set down in the Mishna is a little difficult to under stand without some explanation. It is not smooth reading; Rabbi Ye shuda used a special “shorthand” style with certain words serving as what might be called “cue-words” to indicate a whole passage or thought. He did this because he was mindful of the original prohibition

to write the Oral Tradition down. He realized that what he had done was by way of an emergency mea sure, and he felt that no more should be done than was absolutely necessary. Besides, the rabbis who lived in his day and who were to use this new text as a guide for teaching, were still thoroughly familiar with all the material and really needed nothing more than a bare outline such as the Mishna afforded, with Out lengthy explanations.

But eventually the older genera tions of rabbis passed away and then disputes began to arise among the younger teachers as to the manner in which the “shorthand” words of the Mishna should be understood and explained. In the meantime, the situation of the Jews grew no better; exile dispersed them further and further away from their home land and the danger now arose that the Mishna itself would lose all its value if it would continue to stand alone without any written explan ation.

The solution for this weighty problem was provided by two great rabbis who have become immortal in our history—Rabbi Ashi (who was the head of the famous Yeshiva of Sura, Babylonia in the 4th cen tury) and Rabbina, who lived at a somewhat later date. They partici pated in the stupendous task of assembling all the varying views on the meaning of the Mishna as ex pressed by the rabbis before them, and other pertinent statements of the many wise teachers who lived after the Mishna had been com pleted. The compilers of this new “encyclopedia” based their work on the Mishna, putting all the explana tions, statements and opinions they had gathered together with the Mishna text to which they were related.

This combination of the “short hand” Mishna and the new, more explicit commentary, came to be

known as the “Talmud Bavli” or “The Babylonian Talmud,” for Ray Ashi, Rabbina, and most of the Rabbis whose opinions form part of this work lived not in Palestine but in ancient Babylonia. A similar work was completed in the Holy Land under the supervision of Rabbi Yo hanan ben Nappacha (who died in the 3rd century) and was appropri ately entitled “Talmud Yerushalmi” or “Jerusalem Talmud” to distin guish it from the other compendium that had been compiled in exile.

These two works, the “Talmud” of Babylonia and that of Jerusalem, both based on the Mishna, now became the cornerstone of the Oral

Tradition. They serve as the basic references for any and all decisions that have been made through the ages in matters of Jewish law.

But how was the stupendous wealth of material found in the Tal mud to be applied to the everyday life of the average Jew? Pretend a Jew had a question as to whether or not a certain contemplated action of his was in accordance with Jewish law. In view of what was then avail able, he would first consult the Mishnaic text to find a statement corresponding most closely to his personal problem. In order to un derstand the implications of this statement, he would then have to see

the commentaries which were ap pended to the text by the compilers of the Talmud. But these commen taries are mostly not clear-cut statements, but simply different opinions quoted from competent au thorities. These opinions were authoritative, all of them, because the men who had handed them down had been universally acknowl edged as great teachers of the law, and no rabbi of subsequent gen erations could have arrogated to himself the authority to disregard them and substitute his own judg ment for them. However, the prob lem immediately facing the Jew seeking the solution for his personal question would be to wade through pages and pages of opinions to choose one of the opinions, to fol low. Naturally this was a difficult procedure, and most Jews possess ed and still possess, far too little learning to make the decision of their own initiative.

What did they do to make sure that they would follow the Law as it should be, and that they would make no mistakes? I think that this is a question I’d better answer the day after tomorrow, for it’s getting close to Shabbos. Besides, you’ll agree that, for one day’s reading, what I’ve given you here is quite enough.

Sincerely,

The editor apologizes. The dates published in the SHMITA article (Nov. 1979 HOMEMAKER, Page 11 column 2 and Page 12 column 1) were in error and should be dis regarded. Corrected dates will ap pear in a coming issue of Home maker. The Ray Yisroel Gans article was written for Shmita 5733, a year whose calendar does not co incide with 5740.

Lactic acid is used in many sodas. We have been receiving many calls asking if this lactic acid is milchig (dairy). The answer is emphatically NO—lactic acid used in sodas is not milchig. The lactic acid used in sodas and olives is derived from fermenting starches and neutralizes the acid as soon as formed with cal cium or carbonate. Do not mistake lactic acid for lactose. Lactose is derived only from milk. Lactose is milk sugar. It is crystalized from whey.

In my article “The Tuna Fish Controversy,” I wrote that tuna fish was sometimes cooked in the same retorts as pet food (tuna and chicken). Since then, I have had a similar experience with one of the com panies under our supervision. This company, under our supervision, manufactured potatoes in cans. For some reason, they decided to discontinue their own production of canned potatoes and have another com pany manufacture the potatoes under their label. When they notified us which company would manufacture the potatoes for them I investigated the plant of the prospective manufacturer. I found that they produced pork and beans in the same retorts during the same period of time that they produced the potatoes. Here again is an instance where Kosher and non-Kosher products are processed in the same equipment. Natural ly this company will not be allowed to produce Kosher canned potatoes unless and until it is willing to Kosher ize the equipment and have a Mashgiach in the plant.

We had a like experience with a plant that produces juices for institutions and hospitals. Everyone asks, “What problem can there be with juices?” AU juices

are pasteurized. Pasteurizing is done with heat, which means that the juice is being cooked. Up to the time of our involvement, the same pasteurizing equipment was being used for non-Kosher products on the same day that the juices were made. In order for us to en dorse these juices, we require that they be produced Monday morning, after a weekend. The plant is closed on Sundays; we Kosherize the equipment on Monday morning before we begin a Kosher production. This is done with a Mashgiach T’midi present throughout. * * * *

With Pesach approaching I wish to bring several facts to your attention. On Pesach we, the Ashkenazi Jews, are forbidden to eat Kitniyos—legumes such as peas and beans. There are Rabbis who permit the use of oils or syrups that are derived from Kitniyos such as soya and corn oil, lechitin (soya derivative), and corn syrup. On the other hand, there are many Rabbis who are more stringent concerning this and do not allow the use of these products on Pesach.

For the benefit of those who are cautious and refuse to use any derivatives of Kitniyos on Passover, I want to bring to your attention the following: There are several companies which use lechitin and corn syrup but do not list them among the ingredients as lechitin and corn syrup. They list lecithin as an “emulsifier” and corn syrup as “glucose.” In the past—and I imagine it will be the same this year—most Israeli candies under the supervision of the Chief Rabbinate and local rabbis contain the above-mentioned ingredients. The same is

Hastening the True Liberation

Heaven protect us. This is the result of the failure of some parents to aban don the alien (and inimical to true Yiddishkeit) ideologies, while some parents who endeavor to fulfill the said directive of “withdraw and take unto yourselves,” have nevertheless abdicated their duty and responsibility of bringing up their children in the way of true Yiddishkeit, the way of Torah and Mitzvos, from their earliest age. The sad and tragic effects of such an attitude are not far to seek, sad and tragic not only for the neg lected children, but also for the neg lecting parents.

The festival of Pesach, and especial ly the Korban-Pesach, reminds us most emphatically that if Jews desire to

true with many local firms. The and the (U) do not permit the use of these ingredients on Pesach. Streits products do not use them either. In a previous article I printed and translated a Responsum from Hagaon Horav Moshe Feinstein, Shlita, concerning peanuts and peanut oil, in which he permits the use of peanuts and peanut oil on Pesach for persons who do not have a family tradition (a custom from their parents) to the contrary. Hence, if you do not use corn oil on Pesach, please be careful with products whose label lists glucose or emulsifier among the ingredients even though they have a Kosher l’Pesach hechsher.

I also bring to your attention the fact that the type of kosher supervision of salt and sugar under the K and the (U) is no different from the supervision of the sugar and salt supervised and sold by certain groups. The only difference is the outlandish prices the others charge! There are companies which sell cottonseed oil and advertise Shmira Mishas K’tisha (supervision from the time of oil-pressing). This infers that there is a Mashgiach from the time the cottonseed is pressed until the end of the process. In the U.S.A. there is no such thing! Wesson Oil—Kosher for Pesach—supervised and endorsed by the O.K. Laboratories, has exactly the same kind of supervision as any cottonseed oil sold anywhere in the U.S.A., including Williamsburgh. I bring this to the attention of our readers because of the unnecssary raising of prices before Pesach for all the above items.

Our wishes for a Kosher and Healthful Pesach to all our Homemakers!

(Continued from page 3)

secure for themselves and their chil dren the blessing of “I shall have mercy and pass over (exclude) you” and of the “Season of Our Liberation” in general—liberation from all existing and potential harm, both within (un restrained natural proclivities) as well as, and especially, without (the harm ful influences and pressures of the en vironment)—at a time when the De stroyer roams in the streets and even in the halls of learning—such liberation can be assured only if the parents themselves will relect all “idolatries” and attach themselves to authentic Yiddishkeit, at the same time giving their children a thorough Torah-true Jewish education from infancy, the

kind of education which is sealed in their body and soul, through the prac tical fulfilment of the Torah and Mitz vos in the daily life, in actual practice. Then there is hope and confidence that the parents and their children, all the children, will be together at the Seder-table and celebrate Pesach, the Festival of Our Liberation—Liberation in all respects.

This will also bring nearer and hasten the true Liberation—the true and complete Geuloh—through our righteous Moshiach.

With prayerful wishes for a kosher and happy Pesach and true liberation

WHY

I AM A JEW by Edmond Fleg..

(Continued from page 4) remained alone with the G-d to whom I had just recited a lesson. Then I spoke to Him. In what terms? In what language? How can I repeat it to you, my unborn grand son? If you in turn know these im pulses toward the invisible, if you feel as I felt, this thrill from beyond, if you silently respond to this call from within, you too will find the words which came to me.

I knew G-d was present, very far away and yet quite close, all around me and in my heart. I told Him all my faults and I besought His for giveness. I wanted to be better; I could not be without Him. I prom ised Him to do better, I implored Him to help me. And He did help me, I am sure of it. I rose to Him. He enveloped me. He held me. I fell asleep in His arms.

Who taught me to pray in this way? No one. But what were all the incomprehensible litanies and inex plicable gestures worth compared with this voiceless and formless prayer? I will try to write words which will lend my stammering thought and clarity it needs. I began to feel a contrast between my prayer when alone, which was close to me, and the prayer of my father which I did not comprehend. Or rather, mine only seemed to me to be a prayer, the other a habit that G-d did not notice.

My critical sense too began to grow. I did not write on Saturday at school. That was forbidden. But at college my elder brothers wrote on that day just as on other days; their studies made it necessary. My father went to his office on Satur day after synagogue services. He also wrote, his business made it necessary. Was therefore the rest on the Sabbath-day only important for very little boys?

Once I was taken on a journey,

and at the hotel where we dined the fat and the lean were mixed, and cheese was served after meat, and even ham appeared on the table. My parents ate and permitted me to eat of this forbidden dish. Then the food forbidden at home was no longer forbidden when one was away from home? The law was law no longer?

Thus like all children of all time, I began despite myself to scrutinize my parents, and drawing conclusions from their inconsistencies I very slowly began to break their idols.

Others unconsciously became my accomplices. The first of these was my teacher of religion, the cantor of the synagogue. He had a beautiful voice, a beautiful beard, a beautiful soul. But as a teacher he puzzled me. I was at this time attending college, and was proud of my Latin. Now this man taught that the He brew had no grammar, which caused me to feel dubious about the lan guage and what it inculcated. Then, too, his method alone would have discouraged the most inquisitive of minds. I mumbled prayers which he declared untranslatable. The cate chism began with a sentence which amused me: “Who are you, my child? I am a young Jew or Jewess.” As for the sacred history and the Psalter chanted by my illiterate can tor, how badly it sounded after my Greek or Roman history.

My father, who read Hebrew in the evenings, would say to me occa sionally: “It is a very beautiful lan guage.” I did not think it was. How could I? Jewish values were poorly presented to me—knowledge gained at college alone counted.

Ahd that which was begun by the ignorance of the cantor was con tinued by the cynicism of the Rabbi. Occasionally he came to visit us in the evening after dinner, and we

took our seats again around the table, a glass of claret was poured for him, and we listened as he talk ed.

He had a shaven lip between his magisterial whiskers, and he was an enchanting conversationalist. The whole town doted upon his wit. Could I divine that his scepticism concealed his faith, and that he truly found joy in proclaiming the divine unity. To judge by the G-d who spoke to me at night, the caustic humor of his earthly representative seemed altogether too human.

Professor of Comparative Philolo gy at the university, he scoffed dis dainfully at the small traders of his community, whom however, upon every possible occasion he heartily served. If one were to believe him, the Jewish tailor, when he passed by his shop, felt of the cloth at the back of his rabbinic coat because he had bought it of the Christian tailor, and the cattle dealer, who sought a good match for his daughter, declared: “I am not a cattle dealer; I am a manu facturer of meat.” There were some Jewish tales—amusing Jewish tales, over which I laughed but also blushed a little: the story of the two Jews who had dined at a restaurant and left the door open as they went out on a stormy night, and who mut tered on hearing themselves abused from within: “Listen to the anti semites,” or of Moses, playing écarlé with G-d in Paradise, saying: “Above all, G-d, no miracles.”

This gallery of portraits and this collection of stories, pleasant as they were, marred Israel to my too sen sitive soul. And I could not forget these grotesque pictures when I betook myself against my will to the Synagogue.

I was taken to the Synagogue for the first time according to custom when I was a very small boy, to roll up one of the sacred scrolls with a long linen band covered with color

WHY I AM A JEW by Edmond Fleg

ed letters. I wore my velvet suit with pearl buttons, and was in a state of elation, for from the height of the gallery my mother was watching me, and the gold stars painted in the blue ceiling seemed to me real stars in a real heaven.

But I had come to know the can tor and the Rabbi too well. They robbed the place of its illusions. And excepting for the rare moments which the music transformed, or when the hidden splendor of the ceremony suddenly burst forth in its manifest beauty, what boredom I felt in those dull hours, weighed down the more by the meticulous phrases of an unknown tongue!

What physical irritation I felt against those persons without breed ing who read their newspapers or conversed aloud; what disgust when I heard the only words spoken in French, and these, in order to stim ulate generosity, announcing under the eye of the Holy Law the amount given for charity by each donor.

He was, my child. All those pray ers the meaning of which escaped me, magnificently revealed Him, all those ceremonies the emptiness of which gave me a sense of loneliness, emanated from His presence. But I knew it not—it was badly explain ed to me, and I was to wander a long time among men and thoughts before arriving at the truth.

Ah, you will say, this is a strange way of explaining to you why I am a Jew. But you will not understand why I am a Jew unless you first understand why I ceased to be a Jew.
