SINGLE PARENTING

I have received a great deal of response to my recent article on single parenting (“Suddenly Alone,” June’93). It is evident that the subject touched a nerve in the community, and I hope we can make strides toward helping single parents cope with their unique chal lenges.

Many of your readers called me to express dismay that I did not address the issue of remarriage. They complained that it is very hard to remarry, and that I should have devoted space to this sub ject.

My experience has shown that, in the eyes of others, single parents are seen mostly as “people who are not married.” This perception occurs at the expense of the other legitimate issues faced by sin gle men and women: financial stability, role shifting, and social isolation, to name afew. Itwas mypurpose in the arti cletofocus onthese issues.

ft was not ray intent to minimize the issue ofremarriage. That is avery impor tant matter, and certainly a worthy subjectforafuturearticle.

ARAB-JEWISH INTERMARRIAGE

I found your cover story about Arab Jewish intermarriage (What’s a Nice Jewish Girl Like You.. ?“ Sept.-Oct.) very troubling. ft is hard to believe that what you described is taking place in the HolyLand.

I was aware that intermarriage in the U.S. is very high, but never had I thought thatthe same problem exists inIsrael.

Address letters and manuscripts to THE JEWISH HOMEMAKER, 705 Foster Avenue, Brooklyn, N.Y. 11230. Please include a daytimephone number. Letters aresubjecttoeditingforlength.

Although I enjoy your magazine yourfeatures, profiles, and columns I take issue with your cover and cover story on intermarriage. Here you are telling us to avoid lashon hara, while at the same time taking ourworst problems andadvertisingthem onyourcover.

Our goal in publishing the article on Jewish-Arab intermarriage was not to sensationalize, buttoeducate. Itwouldbe easierfor us to avoid difficult topics. Hiding our head in the sand would cer tainlygenerate lesscontroversy. However, problems such as intermarriage, ~fleft unaddressed, can only worsen. Only by acknowledging that the problem exists canwebegintosolve it. —Ed.

Childabuse

nrecentyears child abuse has gained agreat amountofattention both inthe media

Jand in clinical practice. Each year the subject is featured in dozens of new book titles; it is thefodderoftalk shows and countless newspaperarticles. Why such an increased awareness? Whyarepeople discussingthis topic now?

Part ofthe reason lies in changing trends. Society has grown to recognize the need to protect the child and, at the same time, to create a better environment for him. Research has shown the long-term effects on the abused child’s functioning in differ ent areas, includingrelationships with family and friends, and school andjob perfor mance.

Working in Israel and the United States, both with Jews and non-Jews, I have seen an increase in child abuse. In a frightening development, more and more Orthodox Jewsare appearingatmyoffice.

The good news is that child abuse can be prevented; but in order to master the

problem,we mustfirstunderstand it.

What Is Child Abuse?

How do we define child abuse? Is it a spanking? Locking your son in his room? Watching your neighbor walk down the street on Shabbos pulling her stubbornthree-year-oldbythearm?

Child abuse involves a person who has power using that power to hurt a child. The abuse may or may not be intentional. It may or may not involve hitting—with orwithout an instrument. It does not necessarily leave physical injuries, such as broken bones or scars, butthedamage is stillquitepermanent.

Each of the above examples may constitute abuse, dependingon the par ticular circumstances and the nature of the parent’s action. Locking your son in his room for a few minutes is quite dif ferent than leaving him there for a few days. Likewise, a mild spankingcannot be compared with a severe beating whichresults in scars.

How do we define sexual abuse? An uncle kissing his seven-year-old niece goodbye? A male teacher hugging his student?

Sexual abuse occurs when someone in a dominant position imposes a sexual acton achildwholacksemotional matu rity and cognitive development. In other words, the child doesn’t understand the inappropriateness ofthe act, oris power less and hence unable to resist the per petrator. Sexual abuse includes touch ingachild inprivateplacesorluringhim

or her into a sexual relationship. This relationship can range from exhibition ismtointercourse;included is incest. Therefore, when, how, and in what environment one kisses his niece or hugs his student and the nature of the relationship between the parties will help determine if sexual abuse is involved.

Some symptoms ofabuse can be seen in the following examples, based on actual case histories. Forthepurposesof confidentiality, the names and certain detailshavebeenchanged.

Dov, nowsix, wasabnormally shyand withdrawn. He sat alone in his kindergarten clas avoided contact with otherchildren, and frequently day dreamed. He refused to let the teacher

approach him ortakeoffhis sweater. On many days he wasabsent.

The teacher alerted me to Dov after pulling up his sleeves one day andfinding suspicious marks on his arms. I met with Dov and laterhisfamily, and discov ered that his father was emotionally unstable. Whenever Dov com plai~i d that he wasn’t feel ing well, his father would “heal” him by injecting water into his arm with a needle and syringe. Whenever Dov was a “had boy,” hisfatherwould press lighted cigarettes into his flesh.

When Chaya, now nine, came to see me, she seemed very sweet but anxious. She had been referred to me by her guidance counselor because she was constantly missingschool. While at school she frequently daydreamed and failed to perform assignments. In fact, her school work was so bad that she was sent for psychological testing to rule out anylearningdisabilities.

During our initial meetings Chaya looked at me with great suspicion. She made little eyecontact, yetlistenedwell to my questions. She was so quiet that shehad to be coaxed into conversation.

I had already been given information about Chaya’s background. She was the younger oftwo daughters who had been sexually molested by their father. According to her mother, Chaya had become vety depressed two years ear lier and had spoken about wanting to kill herself. Because her mother could not understand the change in Chaya’s behavior and personality, she did not take herdaughterforprofessional help.

I sensed the mother was trying to deny the child’s pain, since she could not even bring herself to admit some thing was wrong. Moreover, before see-

ing me, Chaya herself had been con fused as towhetherherfather’s behavior wasrightorwrong.

Dov and Chaya did not show interest in their peers or their peers’ activi ties. This worked against them, because they were not able to gatherinformation about normal familial relationships. They assumed thatwhatwenton in their familiesgoes on inallfamilies.

Both casesbearclassic signs ofphys ical or sexual abuse confusion, fear, anxiety, depression, anger, guilt, lethargy, sadness. Both children were practically inert, sitting alone and dwellingon theirexperiences.

These symptoms may show up incompulsiveorrit ualized behavior, phobias, sleep disturbances (night mares, fear of sleeping alone), mood swings, or hyperactivity.

Abuse can alter a child’s self-perception; he may feel worthless, isolated, and hopeless. When he realizes that his peers have not had the same experiences with their own family members, he may withdraw socially and emotionally, becoming unable to trust; he also fears becomingclosetopeople.

Some abused children engage in risky or reckless behavior, such as stealing or taking drugs. Others experi ence somatic symptoms, such as headaches, appetite loss or gain, stom achpains, anddigestiveproblems.

Symptoms more specific to sexual abuse include age-inappropriate awareness ofsexual activity, attempts to engage peers and adults in sexual play, and aversion to physical contact with others.

Symptoms ofboth kinds ofabuse will show up in academic performance. These include poor memory and con centration, shortened attention span, language deficits, and failure to master the “three ‘R’s.” Such children are fre quently misdiagnosed as “learning dis abled.”

Some children go to the other extreme: they become fantastic stu dents, since theyareovereagertoplease their teachers, and get straight A’s and repeated praiseand attention.

Cognitive impairment may depend on how long the abuse has been going on. ifitstops early enough, thechild will be able to overcome the trauma more easily. The natural process of growing up will allow for recovery. Otherwise, the long-term effects can be very severe. Let’s takeJudy’s case.

s Deana Schuck sat for an interview at her desk in the offices of Ohel

AChildren’s Home and Family Services, she received a phone call from a chas sidic woman in her early twenties. The woman had just witnessed, on the streets of Brooklyn, a father beating his nine-year-old daughter’s head into the sidewalk. The woman yelled at thefatherto stop, which only enraged him more.

Unlikely as it sounds, as this was happening a member of the Ohel staff hap pened to walk by, and asked the witness what was happening. He then advised that she call Ohel.

Fearing for the life of the child, Mrs. Schuck, who is Ohel’s Director of Outpatient Services, asked the woman to call the police. She refused, forfear that this would constitute mesirah, the handing overofaJew to the secular authorities. Mesirah is a severe step, taken only in serious circumstances, but that was quite obviously the case here. It was decided that the witness would, instead, try to find the child, who had run off, and bringherinto Ohel.

fosterfamily toanother.

For families living in New York City, the trauma of child abuse may be easiertohandlebecauseofthepresence of Ohel. Under the terms of a contract between the Brooklyn-based organiza tion and the city’s Child Welfare Administration, Ohel is called when everaJewish child needs afosterhome. This contract complies with the Wilder Settlement, a Federal court stipulation which guarantees the right of children requiring an Orthodox Jewish environ menttobeplacedwithOhel.

•:•

In our culture we do not like to inter fere in the raising of a child, nor do we want to think the worst ofthe people we know and sometimes love. The welfare of children, however, depends on peo ple who can see theirpain as well as the pain oftheirparents, and who will take action based on their knowl edge.

The element of fear also plays a role in peo ple’s reluctance to get involved. Many people believe that ifthey report a case of child abuse or neglect the youngster will inevitably be removed from his home. People also have heard how bureaucratic the child welfare system of the City of New York is, how children who don’t need to be removed are taken from innocent par ents, and how children are lost in the system, beingbounced aroundfrom one

These fears are exaggerated and almost always unfounded. No one wants to remove a child from his or her home unless it is absolutely necessary. The city wants to keep families together whenever possible, for two reasons. First, family counseling is much less expensive than placing a child in foster care, and the city’s budget gets tighter every year. Second and more important, the philosophy in the child welfare field is that a child is best offwith his or her ownparents, wheneverpossible.

For many people, the idea of mesirah, no matter how severe the offense, is untenable. Mesirah is cer tainly a very delicate issue, and it is up torabbisexpertinJewishlawtoruleona case-by-case basis. Ohel is in close and constant contact with Rabbi Dovid Cohen, who is a leading halachic authority.

Rabbi Leib Landesman, head of the Kollel Horabonim Beis Din in Monsey, NY, says that in cases where danger exists to life or limb mesirah is not an issue. However, there is a separate issue: the welfare of the child, as seen from theJewishperspective.

The choices to be made can be very delicate. For example, is it permitted to report a case of abuse where the child will likely be removed to a non-Jewish home? Outside of New York that is the common scenario. Rabbi Landesman points out that the variables are many, and that each case must be decided on itsownmerits.

Although all the Jewish holidays commemorate events In ournational hlstoty they are far more than mere recollections ofow post. Every holiday provides us with the oppootunily to relive, as well asto renentber, past event. Every yeat~ the sante spiritual forces which brought about the event a,nsnsernoratedby a holiday are expressed again at those times. Thus the fifteenth of Nissan, the date ofour exodus from Eqypt~ Is eternally ftxed as “the season of our~eedom,” and the Tenth ofTishiel, the day on which G.d forgave the sin ofthe Golden Calf, Is established for all times as “the Day of Atonement”.

The essays In these volumes are adaptations ofthe works atthe Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menadiem M. Sdineerson Shlita, which focus on the respective spiritual messages of the holidays. The endeavorto show how the historic symbolism assodated with these days produces eternally relevant lessons thatare applicable In our current divine service,

possiblereactions.

Scenario 1: The company agrees to theaudit. Itisperformed, andthecertify ingagencydecides tocloselymonitor— at cost to the company every produc tionrun, with arabbipresentatalltimes. Until now, continuous supervision had been required only if not kosher foods were present when a kosher run was being done. But with the company hav ing forfeited its credibility, the most stringentsupervisionisnecessary.

Scenario 2: The company reacts arrogantly and says that there are numerous kashruth agencies out there (overthirty, infact), andthatitintends to find an agency which will be more accommodating.

Two sub-scenarios now come into play:

Scenario 1: The kashruth agencies fall all over themselves in anticipation of acquiring this lucrative account. Some agencies are willing to do almost anythingtogetit.

One agency is so enticed by the chanceforaddedincomethatitcalls the company rather than waiting for the company’s call. The kashruth agency tells thecompany: “Weheardyouhave a problem; how can we help?” How dis creetandkind!

Scenario 2: The kashruth agencies understand that there is a pure and sim ple kashruth problem here. They dis creetly distance themselves from the company until the problem is solved. They recognize that otherwise they can not become involved, forifthey are seen as soliciting the company’s business, kosherstandardswillsuffer.

CaseB

While visiting a company overseas, theinspectingrabbifinds abarrelwhich is labeled in aforeignlanguage. Heasks about the barrel’s contents, and is told that it is filled with turpentine. He finally discovers that it actually con tains a not kosher food ingredient. The company’s representatives sign a report sayingtheyliedtotherabbi.

In addition, hefinds an ingredientfor which permission to use had not been given, andheasks thattheingredientbe replaced. However, upon the next visit he finds that the substitute ingredientis

alsounauthorized.

Afterprolonged discussion, thecom pany says that it cannot obligate itselfto use only authorized ingredients. It must be able to use ingredients of its own choosing.

Whathappensnow?

Scenario 1: All agencies show restraint.

Scenario 2: Agencyafteragencysees an opportunity here to expand its hori zons; not a single agency checks with the first agency to see what issues caused it to remove certification from thecompany.

In conclusion, we conform to the the ory ofeconomic competition. We rec ognize that companies have the oppor tunity to choose the agency which will certify their products. However, there is a compelling moral component to kosher supervision. It is not a business; it involves a higher calling. Therefore, while we cannot legally obligate other kashruth agencies to show restraint,

there is a moral imperative which out weighs the desire for profits. That imperative is nothing less than the maintenance of the integrity of kosher supervision.

A companyshould notfeelthatit can play one agency against another. (Fortunately, these are in the minority.) This leads inevitably to the deteriora tionofkosherstandards.

If a company does not act properly, wehave areligious and moralobligation to act as the Torah-true Jews we present ourselvesasbeing.

A food company has the full right to seek a deal on good economic terms. In addition, companies are absolutely entitled to choose those kashruth repre sentatives with whom they have a com fortablepersonalrelationship.

However, if kashruth problems do arise, as unfortunately occurs from time totime, akoshersupervisionagencyhas aprimary obligation tofuffill its obli gation to the community of kosher con sumersandtoG-d. S

to be seen in the public domain ratherthaninside.

TRebbe would tell his disci ples that, on Chanukah, “We must listen carefully to what the candles are saying.” In fact, the message of the Chanukah lights impacts the scope ofour service ofG-d throughout the year, for“a mitzvah is a lamp and Torah is light”(Proverbs6:23).

he previous Lubavitcher

Noothermitzvah sodirectly elevatestheaspectsofmaterial existencewhichconcealG-dliness. TheChanukah candlesareimbued withthepowertorefine and elevatethedarkness ofthe publicdomain, causing it to shinewith spiritual light.

Every mitzvah is a lamp which lights up the darkness of ourmaterialworld, but this illumination is more manifest in those command ments which are associated with visible light.

The spiritual implications of the Chanukah lights are reflected in the halachic details thatregulate the perfor

mance of the mitzvah. For a start, the Chanukah lights should be kindled after sunset and must burn into the night. They should be placed at the out sideofthe entrancetothehome, an indi cation that they are primarily intended

The darkness of night and specificallyofthepublic domain (which, in the absence of artifi cial light, is pitch black) repre sents the aspects ofour material existence which obscure G-dly light and prevent us from appre ciating G-d’s all-pervasive unity. By kindling the menorah, we generate light, which elevates the material realm and reveals its G-dlynature.

No othermitzvah so directly elevates the aspects ofmaterial existence which conceal G-dliness. The candles are imbuedwith the powerto refine and ele vate the darkness ofthe public domain, causingitto shine with spiritual light.

than to look at them, in order to offer thanks and praise to Your Great Name for Your miracles, Your wonders, and Yoursalvation.”

The Chanukah lights therefore demonstrate and publicize the Divine miracles ofthe holiday. Even that, how ever, isnottheessenceofthemitzvah.

This is clearly seen from the ruling that one lights the menorah with the recitation of its appropriate blessing even when his lighting does not con tribute to publicizing the miracle. For example, alamp with two spouts can be used by two people to fulfill their indi vidual duties of lighting, despite the fact that the miracle does not receive greater publicity from the second per son’s kindling. Likewise, in times of danger, when itis impossibletolight the menorah openly in order to publicize the miracle, it may be lit out of public view.

The essence of the mitzvah of the Chanukah menorah is that it is litforits own sakeandnootherreason. The mitz vahtranscends anyothergoals andpur

poses, afactwhich reflects an essential messageofChanukah.

The miracle of Chanukah came about by virtue of our ancestors’ seff sacrifice: they were ready to lay down their lives for the sanctity ofthe Torah. Though few and physically weak, they stood up against a huge and powerful army in order to sanctify G-d’s Name. This sacrifice on the part of Israel for G-d, transcending all personal consid erations, evoked the miracle of the menorah, indicating G-d’s intrinsic loveforIsrael.

Just to watch the lights ofour meno rah, just to hear and absorb their mes sage of essence connecting with essence, without any mundane bene fits, evokes the impatiently awaked renewal of the lights of the holy Menorah in the eternal Beit Hamikdash (Holy Temple), which will come speedilywithMashiach!•

A Look At What’s Savory And Sensational On The Side

Historically, limited winter vegetables leftfew choices and little excitement. Not anymore.Today imaginations can soarusingeven the simplest recipes.

The Jewish Homemaker has taken many of the old standards and brought them to life with new ways to cook them, spice them, and eat them. Sweet pota toes and parsnips become chips or fries. Plain potatoes become Greek-style potato balls and Samosa served with chutney. Try pancakes with more exotic flavors, such as rice and lentil pancake with Indian seasoning. For lighter dishes, taste an updated Caesar salad with homemade sourdough croutons and Asian-style tofu salad tossed in a tangy peanut dressing.

Then see ifyou don’tagree winterwas neversogood!
