ABAAL TESHUVA LOOKS

BACK

What brings the Baal Teshuva home again?

Is there a set formula to help us get to the heart and mind of the tinnok shenishba the captive innocent who has lived in the non-religious world with the Now Generation and traversed the 39 levels of sacrilege and profanity? How can we bring him back? What is the magic nostrum that is responsible for the phenomenon known to us as the Baal Teshuva?

Hundreds upon hundreds of young men and young women have returned to the fold. Have been returned, in the United States, the Western countries, in the Eastern lands behind the iron cur tains that have sought so long to shut out Jewish observance, and in Israel. A visit to the Ohr Somayach yeshiva net work, to Yeshivat Dvar Yerushalayim, both with their parallel programs for males and females, and the tens of ex cellent institutions of learning in Jerusalem and outside—for persons who had not had the opportunity or the desire (or whatnot!) to understand and recognize their roots, would testify to the effectiveness of the Bulmans and Goldsteins, the Weinbachs and Wein bergs, the Freifelds and Horovitzes, and the so many more who have reached out and brought in.

Every one brought back is a whole world saved.

But, what brought him back? Was it the person, the right place, the right hour? The right sweat, the right toil? And is success guaranteed? Can failure be recognized?

A young man who had been at Dvar Yerushalayim but could not make it

there offers a case history. He writes about his experiences in Jerusalem, looking back.

“I’ve come back to Europe,” Peter Jungk writes. “I’ve come back to the other world. fled my Yeshiva after 3 months of more or less serious study ing. felt had suddenly reached a crossroads: either back to the other world with its temptations, or deep into Judaism, deep into davening, mitzvot, kashrut, Shabbat... The choice of a lifetime, perhaps to decide upon one’s own personal future. When the Rabbis asked me to stay, said: “No, I’m sorry. feel this is valuable to me, but. And... Because So the Rabbi is asked: “What can be more important to you than to give Judaism a real chance? Give it a chance! Stay for a year.” fled my Yeshiva. Now, several weeks later, clearly recognize the reason why: if there is such a miracle as Absolute Truth upon this planet, then it may very well be Torah. fled, because don’t feel enough strength to change my entire lifestyle, a lifestyle have learned to live in the non-Jewish world. Born in California, I was raised in my parents’ “homeland” Austria. Yes, I had my Bar-Mitzva in Vienna, but what Judaism was never really knew, never felt, never cared for. Until my curiosity led me to Israel to the Jewish homeland, to Jerusalem, and the West ern Wall. And curiosity was responsible for my first visit to a Yeshiva. Mockery was my attitude when first wore the kippa and entered the Yeshiva-realm. Within hours this mockery rapidly disin tegrated, transformed itself into a grow ing fascination, into a strong feeling of

belonging. The Yeshiva had suddenly become a home for my wondering wan dering soul. Yet the fear of allowing this unique experience to really take hold of me, of allowing my old habits and be liefs to be replaced by a “dati” Jewish life, prevailed throughout. did not live at the Yeshiva, only came to Chumash and Talmud classes. Everything learn ed, I tried to take in as pure “informa tion,” never considering it tobe truth, ormiracle, or HaShem’s word on Mount Sinai. “Information—that’s what the Western World has taught me to search for. “Information! There is no such thing as Absolute Truth!”

Only now, weeks after leaving Jerusalem, have slowly but steadily ar rived at the conclusion: If I’m born a Jew, have a tremendous obligation to wards the ethics of our fathers, towards Judaism as a Jew’s lifestyle, towards Torah and Talmud. For the first time within the 27 years of my life, have kept the Shabbat—as best as could—im mediately after my arrival in Europe. While living in Jerusalem, profaned the Shabbat but on the first weekend back in the Diaspora the transformation slowly began. must admit: it’s still a rather superficial transformation, Tsit sith, Tefillin, daily davening, perfect kas hrut have not become a part of my life, yet the mere fact that the Shabbat is now so vitally important to me, lets my Judaism grow within me, changes my point of view steadily, from one week to the next. Yes, perhaps it’s superficial, but it’s the surface which is wrapped around the precious fruit of Judaism like a shell. Ham, pork chops, lobsters, oysters, shrimps—how craved for these “delicacies” up until my return to the Diaspora! Suddenly every Chinese spring roll, every Spaghetti Bolognese, every meal at a friend’s house has be come a dubious affair. Suddenly I’m ob liged to search for Jewish families, wherever am, be it in Paris, Vienna, Zurich or London. Not fanaticism, yet constant yearning for Jerusalem that’s become my daily life. I’ve begun telling my few Jewish friends (who have been brought up like myself) about Is rael, their homeland. I’ve tried to con vince some of them to visit a Yeshiva... Suddenly, discover the tragedy of as similated Jews’ self-hatred and their

Strengthen Torah and Ju

An issue often raised In contempo rary Jewish life is the question of What is Judaism and What is a Jew. There are those who propose defini tions ofJudaism which are wholly or partially contrary to Torah law. The definition of Judaism, they main tain, is not necessarily connected with the observance of Torah and Mitzvos. Although they have aban doned many of G-d’s command ments they insist that they are “still in their Jewishness”, that they are not committing any wrong, for, to theirwayofthinking, the abandoned Mitzva has no pertinence to their Judaism, so if they neglect it they lose nothing oftheir Jewish identity.

Their alienation from authentic Judaism may begin rather subtly, imperceptibly. The individual may, at first, be prepared to accept all of Written and Oral Torah, and even t’ fine points of Talmudic legislation,— but balk at some restrictions im posed by the later Rabbinical au thorities. If this ‘later restriction’ is logically acceptable to him, fine; if not, he will ignore it. But—the degen eration of his attitude to Torah does not end here. One does not suddenly

stray from the main highway into the forest. At first, one strays off the highway ever so slightly. The direc tion in which one is heading after that first wrong step is almost the same as the direction ofthe highway. Almost the same—but not quite. The distance between the two paths widens and, eventually, the alterna tive, mistaken path leads into the wilderness.

The first step away from Torah is the assumption that man is the mas ter of Torah, what appeals to him he accepts, what leaves him cold he re jects, yet he declares that this is total Judaism, that he does no wrongwith his rejection. The next step is when he questions whether Oral Torah Is mm hashamayim—from heaven, the word ofG-d or ahuman intervention, while only the Written Torah is Di vine. He may then proceed to say that maybe only parts of the Written Torah are Divine. Ultimately, he re pudiates everything.

He will not be content with failing to observe certain Mitzvos, but will dignify his attitude by declaring it a “movement”, a trend, a school of thought within Judaism, one that

accepts only a part of Torah as au thoritative.

The previous Lubavitcher Rebbe was deliberate in his choice ofwords. Before urging efforts to “strengthen Judaism”, he insisted that first one must learn Torah to know exactly what Judaism is, never to define Judaism in non-Jewish terms. For others, times change and religions change with them—anewera in a new country brings a new religion. The Jew, however, is not to assume that as others alter their faiths yet retain their peoplehood and identity, so might the Jew deal with his Jewish ness; nor should he follow their style of determining what is meaningful or relevant or obsolete.

Before engaging in “strengthening Judaism” one must “strengthen Torah,” the Torah for which Jews of fered their lives for thousands of years, preserving and transmitting it through all generations—in its en tirety.

Torah Integrity

“Strengthening Torah and Judaism”, he continues, “In each locale according to its situation.”

. 4 THE JEWISH HOMEMAKER

At first glance this is unclear, how can we speak of “each place accord ing to its situation” and maintain that Torah is constant, eternal, whose values apply under all cir cumstances?

But there is no suggestion here about modification of Torah and Judaism. The Rebbe urges that the method of“strengthening Torah” de pends on the character and the need of the environment. Whatever the particular needs of “each locale,” the process of education might have to be step by step, as will be shortly explained. We are not, however, to bring Torah down to the level of the particular locale, adapting it to con form with the understanding ofmen, for this is the antithesis ofthe Torah of truth. Truth does not tolerate dis tortion.

ModiI~ring Torah, furthermore, is not favor, for this accustoms man to falsehood. An intelligent person pre sented with an abridged Torah, a trimmed Judaism, offered as au thentic and complete, will later be properly resentful. Why wasn’t I told that there are 613 Mitzvos, the whole corpus ofTorah? Didn’t you trust me

not to be frightened away? Let me de cide whether or not I will accept it all. Don’t tell me that there is a golden calf, and that it is proper to do what “everyone” does and worship it—and yet I still remain a Jew.

Men do succumb to weakness, and unable to resist temptation they do sin. But they realize that the act is wrong. The deed is currupt, but the man’s ideas, his faith, are un touched. But when someone sneers that Torah and Mitzvos are obsolete, that “today”, the social Mitzvos are sufficient when he is prepared to re examine the Mitzvos between man and G-d to see whether they are ac ceptable to the non-Jewish world and will retain only the popular ones—this act of calling a sin a Mitzva, this is perversion of Torah and of Honesty. Whatever man does, he must recognize that sin ~is sin, that Mitzva is Mitzva, and mislabel ing them forwhateverpurpose is cor rupt.

Naturally, one who arrives in a community where the fundamentals of Judaism are unknown, where Shabbos and Kashrus and Mitzvos do not exist, must begin someplace;

he cannot teach all ofTorah at once. But he must beware not to imply that the particular Mitzva he starts with is the totality ofTorah. He must des cribe it as the first step, the aleph that precedes the bats, knowing that there is more than bats ahead.

The “child” cannot learn more than one “letter” at a time, but this is merely a matter of comprehension, not a limitation on the subject. He must be aware that all the rest is beingwithheld from him onlytempo rarily, that there is more to Torah than he receives at this moment. (Aleph is the first letter in the word emes, truth, but it is part of that word only when the word is com plete. Aleph by Itself is not emes, it is not the truth.) Tomorrow he will learn the next “letter” and then the third, until the full heritage becomes his.

Step by step, one Mitzva at a time, the Jew is introduced to authentic, undiluted Judaism. He knows that what he has is onlyapart, that he will encounter more at the proper time, when he is ready. But never will he delude himselfthat the mite he has is all that Judaism and Torah have to offer.

Before urging efforts to “strengthenJudaism “, he insistedthat firstone mustlearn Torah to know exactly whatJudaism is, neverto defineJudaism in non-Jewishterms.

Jews

While it is generally agreed that Fr ance’s Jewish community is the largest in Western Europe, and sec ond only to the American Jewish community in the free diaspora, pre cise population data are lacking. Es timates fluctuate between 550,000 and more than 700,000 souls. Mem bership in synagogues and com munal organizations is very low. More revealing perhaps are the fig ures of pro-Israel philanthropy. In the wake of the Yom Kippur War of 1973, 80,000 donors contributed to the United Jewish Appeal. Assuming that each contributor represents an average five-person family (father, mother, two children, one elderly rel ative), one comes to a total of 400,000 “concerned” Jews. Ifwe add some 200,000 “unconcerned” Jews,

we arrive at an estimate ofa commu nity of 600,000.

The majority of French Jews are immigrants or children of immig rants Approximately 60 percent of the community is Sephardic, trans planted in the past 30 years from the French colonies or protectorates of North Africa and from other Mediter ranean or Middle Eastern countries where French influence was strong: Greece, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Iran. Of the Ashkenazic sec tion of the community, a further 25 percent is East European, or of East European origin. Old-established French Jewry, as typified by the Rothschild family, amounts to no more than 15 percent of the total Jewish population.

Progress Report

It is thus quite understandable that French Jews, still in their for mative years as a community, have not reached the level ofmilitancyand organization characteristic ofAmeri can Jews. Butwhat theyhave already achieved is quite remarkable.

Religious life, for instance, is de veloping in all Jewish centers throughout the country. The central Rabbinate, or Consistoire, a legacyof the 19th century community, has been rejuvenated by Sephardic Jews, and has moved from a semi-conser vative ideology to modern Or thodoxy. It supervises an impressive network of synagogues, religious courts, kosher butcheries or food processing companies, and kosher restaurants. In Paris alone, there are

6

now 17 kosher restaurants, some of them of fine quality, as against only five restaurants 10 years ago.

Orthodox Judaism, either of the Agudat Israel variety or Hassidic, is also expanding, and has established its own synagogues and kashrut boards. There are several important yeshivot in Paris and in Provence. The Yad Mordechai Institute for Tal mudic Learning, for instance, lo cated in Paris, accommodates over 50 full-board students, while about 300 others attend weekday classes.

Reform Judaism, once a shadowy denomination, has progressed to such an extent that it recently split into, two rival groups: the Liberal Union, whose Parisian synagogue is located on Rue Copernic; and the Jewish Liberal Movement of France. The Union is closer to Conservatism and the Movement to mainstream American Reform.

Religion and Education

Religious revival leads to educa tional and cultural assertiveness; or perhaps it is more accurate to speak of a feedback process: There are now several full-time Jewish schools in France, and these schools, while primarily founded in order to meet the needs of religious families, have have attracted many non-religious families as well. Under French law, private schools can get government financial help as long as they follow the Ministry of Education cur riculum on matters like science, French literature and foreign lan guages. Almost all Jewish schools applied for such contracts.

Politically, the community re mains in a state close to anarchy. The Representative Council of French Jews (FSJU), an enormous bureaucratic machine that manages communal fundraising, often pre tends to political guidance, but is al most unanimously resisted.

In recent years, activist groups of some importance challenged what they termed “the establishment” by various spectacular initiatives, like the “Twelve Hours of Israel” rally which gathered thousands of people In 1976, 1977, and 1979. The main activist group. Renouueau Juff (Jewish Renewal), founded by a 33-

year old lawyer, Henri Haidenberg, actively campaigned for a “Jewish vote,” and eventually called for the “dismissal” of former President Gis card D’Estaing. The Comité D’Initia tive Pour Israel (CII) engaged in In formation work and training ofpolit ical leaders.

The Community and Israel

Both Renouueau and CII are un conditional supporters ofthe Jewish state. Other groups, however like Identité et Dialogue, which recruits among wealthy Moroccan Jews, are almost openly anti-Zionist. It is very difficult to ascertain the scope of their influence, but they certainly draw support from the Sephardic cir cles who resent “Ashkenazic domina tion” in Israel. They are echoed by Jewish left-wing intellectuals like Jean DanieL, editor of the powerful weekly magazine Le Nouvel Obser vateur, or “neo-Bundist” theoreti cians Richard Marienstras and Pierre Vidal-Naquet.

Anti-Semitism is clearlya source of concern for French Jews, especially since the outrage of the Rue Coper nic Synagogue, in Octobr 1980. It is noteworthy, however, that accord ing to police sources and to a report published by the magazine Le Point the terrorists who operated at Rue Copernic were not French neo-Nazis, but Arabs, presumably related to the PLO. While some verbal antiSemitism is widespread in sections of the French population, most real anti-Semitism manifestations have similarly been tied to the Arab-Israeli dispute or to the pro-Arab stand of the previous government.

French neo-Nazis are very few. But “revisionist” ideologies, denying the reality of the Holocaust, enjoy some kind of support in wider circles. Equally disturbing has been the growth of the “new right,”. It avoids anti-Semitic statements, but main tains that Jews are “non-Euro peans”. They tend also to be anti Israel.

Significantly enough, many French conservatives rejected the “new right” for both its anti-Ameri canism and its “anti-Judeo-Chris tian” stand, while many left-wingers flirted with it.

Jewish Living

The title parnas, president or war den of a congregation, was formerly accorded to the religious leader and administrator of a community. The Talmud asks: “Who is a scholar worthy of being appointed as parnas ofthe congregation? He who is asked about a law from any source. and is able to answer it” (Shabbat 114).

The Jerusalem Talmud records the appointment of prominent scholars, such as Rabbi Akiva, as parnasim of the congregation, while elsewhere it speaks of Moses, Aaron and Miriam as being the ideal type of person to act as parnas since they demonstrat ed the qualities of leadership and were able to mix easily with people.

Early on, the parnas—the word de rives from a root meaning “to pro vide” or “to support”—was responsi ble for the distribution of alms to the poor. In the Middle Ages he became a lay leader, or president, of the con gregation, having been elected by the rank-and-file membership.

From the earliest times, raised seats were allocated in the synagogue to those holding this honoured posi tion. They were placed either on, to the side or in front of the bima, but always facing the congregation, so that every worshipper could be seen by the parnasim (Talmud, Succot 51). This was necessary for the allo cation of mitzvot.

Around the sixteenth century, the sole responsibility of teaching and making halachic decisions devolved on to the rabbi, and the administra tive duties of the congregation were handled by the parnas. The lay leader also came to be known as the gabbai (treasurer), since the collector of taxes and levies was originally known as the gabbai tzedeka.

Today, these are honorary posi tions; the parnas is generally known as the warden, and the gabbai as the financial representative. The Sephardim use the term parnas presidente to denote the lay leader of the congregation.

The method of election or appoint ment depended to a great extent on local custom. Some early congrega

APRIL-MAY 7

tions had written regulations called takkanot—similar to the printed byelaws of the present-day United Synagogue of London—but when many of them drafted their own con stitutions in thevernacular, the Heb rew titles were discarded by the wayside.

Parnasim presided over elected bodies of synagogue policy-makers variously known as boards of man agement, councils or committees. Today it is these bodies which hold the purse-strings, appoint the religi ous leaders and officials and ad minister the various charitable and welfare activities of the community.

Many synagogue members aspire to become parnas or gabbai. Perhaps they are encouraged by the saying in the Talmud (Yoma 22), “As soon as a man is appointed an administrator (parnas) of a community, he be comes rich”!

A minimum of ten male worship pers above the age of 13 is required to form a minyan, a congregational quorum. They are then entitled to merit the official designation of a holy congregation, kehila kedosha, which is considered to be sanctified by the Divine Presence.

Among the reasons given for the number ten is that in the story ofthe ten spies sent by Moses to report on the Holy Land, the word for a congre gation, eidah, appears (Numbers 15). Earlier, Abraham, urged G-d to save Sodom if ten righteous men were to be found there (Genesis 18); and later, Boar gathered round him ten elders ofthe city in order to make a statement regarding Naomi (Ruth 4).

A minyan is necessary for all public worship that falls under the heading tefila betzibur—such as the repeti tion of the amida, the reading of the Law and the recitation of kaddish. “Nine rabbis,” says an old Yiddish maxim, “cannot make a minyan, but ten shoemakers can.”

The concept of minyan men was once maintained by the “ten idlers,” asara batlanim, who were kept by the congregation solely to ensure that religious life, even in the smal lest community, was guaranteed by the existence of a congregational quorum. Public worship emphasises the Jewish doctrine of social respon

sibility; it is the spiritual link that unites one Jew to another and, through them all, to K’lal Yisrael— the community of Israel—and to G-d.

Although Judaism recognizes the genuine spiritual value of private de votion and prayer, congregational services are regarded as being more uplifting and inspiring and more conducive to d’veikut, attachment to, and communion with, G-d.

In order to function as a compact community (kehfla), Jewish life needs a cohesive force catering for the needs and welfare of its adhe rents. The most highly developed kehlla was that formed in sixteenthcentury Poland, where four pro vinces amalgamated to form a su preme Council of Four Lands.

The council served as a judicial body, established schools and yeshivot and enforced Jewish law and ethics, as well as the law of the State. This created unity of thought and action, affording an opportunity for the application of Jewish law in everyday life.

In all these activities the synagogue remained the central power-house of the community, whether as bet haknesset, house of assembly, bet hatefila, house of prayer, or bet hamidrash, house of learning. It served the spiritual and social needs of the Jew and to this day embraces its original functions as a place for assembly, prayer and study.

On the Shabbat before the Exodus from Egypt, 10th of Nisan, the Chil dren of Israel witnessed a miracle as they carried ;out the first Mitzvah given to them by Hashem.

“On the 10th day ofthe month... each man shall take a lambfor the household, a lambfor each house”. (Shemot 12:3)

The lamb was to be be prepared for sacrifice at dusk on the 14th ofNisan and this involved its safe keeping for four days. During this time the Is raelites were vulnerable to attack by vengeful Egyptians to whom the lamb was sacred. On this special Shabbat however, each head of a household among the Israelites took a lamb and bound it to a bed-post. The Egyptians angrily observed the Children of Israel but were struck with fear and unable to take revenge. This miracle is remembered annu ally on Shabbat HaGadol, regardless of whether or not it falls on the 10th of Nisan; and the shank-bone of a

lamb on the Passover Seder table further commemorates the event.

Forty years after the first Passover, on the 10th of Nisan, Miriam the sis ter of Moshe Rabbenu died at the camp ofKadesh. Since herdeath, the 10th ofNisan, ifit falls on a weekday, is observed among some righteous as a fast day.

As the miracle ofthe Paschal Lamb is especially associated with its oc currence on a Shabbat, it is the Shabbat before Passover which is celebrated rather than the date itself. This is also in order not to over shadow the anniversary fast of the 10th of Nisan in memory of Miriam (Book of Our Heritage).

We are told in the Torah that: “there was no water for the congrega tion” (Bamidbar 20:2) immediately following Miriam’s death and burial at Kadesh. Thus we learn that the well ofwaterwhich had accompanied the Children ofIsrael in theirjourney through the wilderness ceased to flow on the 10th of Nisan, and this

was seen to be a miracle directly at tributable to Miriam (Rashi, ad bc.).

Why was the well of water granted to the Children of Israel in the merit of Miriam? It was a reward from Hashem for her virtuous character, for which she can be regarded as one of the benefactors of Israel in every generation, together with her brothers Moshe and Aaron (from whom the miracles ofthe Manna and the Clouds-of-Glory, respectively, are due).

What were the virtuous actions of Miriam forwhich we honorher mem ory on the 10th of Nisan? Rashi tells us that the Hebrew midwives, called in the Torah Shiphrah and Puah (Shemot 1:15), were in factYocheved and Miriam (the mother and sister of, Moshe Rabbenu). Pharaoh had at tempted to use the midwives in his plan to destroy a new generation of Hebrew males, but the midwives feared Hashem more than anyplan of an Egyptian king:

omenAridThe New Moon

Popular usage has called Rosh Chodesh, the New Moon, a “Women’s Sabbath”. This stems from the cus toms codified in the ShulchartAruch (Orach Chayim 417:1), “One is per mitted to perform labor on Rosh Chodesh, but the women who are ac customed not to perform labor on it are observing a good custom.” In a lengthy section of BLur Halacha, Rabbi Israel Meir Kagan z.t.1. ex plains that in practice women must not allow Rosh Chodesh to be a dayof normal work, but rather should ref rain from certain specific labors, the details being determined by family custom.

In the Tur (ad bc.), Rabbeinu Yaakov ben Asher brings the reason for this custom in the name of his brother Rabbeinu Yehuda as follows: “Since the Pilgrimage Holidays were instituted to correspond to each of the three Patriarchs; Pesach corres ponding to Avraham. Shavuot cor responding to Yitzchak Sukkot corresponding to Yaakov the twelve new moons which are also called holidays, should correspond to the twelve tribes. But when the Tribes sinned with the Golden Calf, these were taken from them and given to their wives, who were not in volved in the sin.” This follows the rendering of Shemot 32:3 that we find in the Aramaic translation of Yonatan ben Uziel; “The women re fused to give theirjewels to their hus bands and so immediately all the people took off the golden earrings from their own ears and brought them to Aaron.” The indication of this in the Hebrew text is the usage of the masculine instead of the

feminine which would usually be ex pected.

One can only look in amazement and admiration at the courage of these women who were able to stand up under the pressure of their hus bands who were intent on obtaining gold for the Calf, when we see how even Aaron the Cohen compromised when he saw that his nephew Chur, who had rebuked them, was killed for his opposition (see Rashi, Shemot 32:5). Where, indeed, did the women get the courage to stand up to these men? And why is a rest day on the New Moon deemed the most appropriate reward?

Rabbi Moshe Isserles in his Darkei Moshe on the above mentioned sec tion of the Tur brings, in the name of Or Zarua, what seems to be an en tirely unrelated reason for the cus tom of women resting on Rosh Chodesh: “Since every month, a wife is renewed, immerses herself ritu ally, and returns to her husband as dear to him as on the day of their wedding, so too the moon is renewed and people long to see it. therefore, Rosh Chodesh is a holiday for women.”

It seems to me that to answer these questions we have to examine the Midrash (Shemot Rabb’a 28:2) which explains Hashem’s call to Moshe Rabbeinu in Shemot 19:3 preparatory to the Giving of the Dc calogue:

“Thus you should say to the House ofYaakov—these are the women—and relate to the sons of Israel—these are the men. Whyare the women first?.. Rabbi Tachlifa ofCaesaria said: The

Holy One Blessed be He said, “When I created the world, I commanded but one command to Adam Harishon (the first man) and afterwards Eve re ceived this command, then trans gressed and corrupted the world. Now ifI do not call to the women first, they will annul the Torah.” Therefore it is stated: Thus you should say to the House of Yaakov (i.e. the women).” The giving of the Torah to the Jewish People was a second lease on life to all ofmankind and all ofcre ation. According to our Sages, all Creation was waiting, as it were, with bated breath for the acceptance of the Torah by Israel, lest all be cast once again into primordial chaos. The Children of Israel were raised to the level ofAdam before his first sin. “You are Adam” (Yechezkiel 34:31) is addressed to the Jewish People as a whole, who are entrusted with the preservation and development of Creation, as was Adam. The women of Israel in a sense, as indicated in the above Midrash, were entrusted with the special task of correcting the actions of Eve.

The Maharal explains (in Chidushej Aggadot) that the trans gression of the three Mitzvot enum erated in theMishna in Shabbat31b that can lead to death for women in childbirth—Njddah (family purity), Challah (separation of the priestly offering from the dough) and light ing Sabbath candles_correspond to the three parts of the human being, the body, the heart and the brain (Nefesh, Ruach, and Neshamah).

The Challah represents the

10

human body, which is considered like dough in the hands of the Creator; the blood of Niddah corres ponds to the vital spirit; and the soul of man is called the candle of G-d (Mishlet 20:27).

By being careful in these com mands, the woman not only avoids death in childbirth, but she per forms her primal Torah-task of cor recting the damage done to Creation by the act of Eve. Indeed, the suffer ing associated with menstruation, pregnancy and childbirth stems from the sentence of Eve in Bereshit 3:16. With all this in mind, perhaps we can achieve some insight into the wellsprings from which the Women ofIsrael drç~w up the courage to stand up to the mixed multitude when the latter demanded of them contrib utions to the making of the Golden Calf. This act would have once more brought down mankind from the level of Adam HaRishon before his first sin; the whole ofwomen’s specif ic task in G-d’s Torah was at stake. No, they would not be accomplices to this heinous sin!

That this act of courage of the women of Israel gained them the holiday of Rosh Chodesh, corres ponding to their internal renewal cycle, seems a most appropriate re ward.

However, it seems to me that there is yet another aspect of Israel’s ser vice to Hashem on the New Moon which is significant in this respect. To reveal this we have to examine a statement of Reish Lakish in Shavuot 9a and Hullin 60a: “Why is the goat of the sin offering of Rosh

Chodesh distinguished in that it is called ‘a sin offering for Hashem’? Said the Holy One, Blessed be He, ‘This goat will be for me as an expia tion for having reduced the size of the moon’.

Maharal in Beer HaGolah (54-55) explains that by this sacrifice Israel is called upon to remove the apparent humiliation of the moon by its monthly phasing into nothingness, a seeming lack of perfection in the work of Creation, giving rise to the complaint by the moon for being sen tenced• to obscurity. The sacrifice (Korban) is an act of drawing near (Kiruv) to Hashem by Israel, and as an open demonstration that the humilityofthe righteous is most pre cious in G-d’s sight.

Rabbi Zvi Hirsh Chayes in his book Darkei Moshe gives a somewhat dif ferent explanation to this Gemara on the basis of two statements of Ram bam is the Moreh Nevuchim. As if ig noring the Gemara, Rambam ex plains the unique language used for the sin offering qf.the New Moon.as. an emphatic statement that thiè is not an offering to the moon, as the idolators used to give at this time of the month, but rather to Hashem alone. Rabbi Chayes explains that according to the original plan of Cre ation the sun and moon should have been equal in size, in which case men would not have come to the rbistaken belief that the sun is god and the moon is the intermediary, but when the moon complained that “Two kings cannot use the same crown” G d reduced the moon (see Rashi Be reshit 1:16; Hullin 60b) giving rise to

the mistaken notions of the idolators. Therefore Hashem asks us to bring an expiation by an explicit sacrifice to Him on the New Moon. Taking this insight along with that of the Maharal, we see that the holi day of the New Moon, with its con tribution to the correction of the seeming imperfections of Creation, is indeed an appropriate reward for the courageous women of Israel who resisted brazen, murderous forces that were driving the Sons ofIsrael to the Golden Calf.

Afterwards, in order to expiate the sin of the Golden Calf, the Children of Israel were assigned the building of the Mishkan (Tabernacle) in the desert, with it many correspon dences to the cosmos as a whole, as explained by the Malbim and others. (For example, we learn the 39 categories of creative activity forbid den on the Sabbath—given to remind us of the Creator of the World—from the building of the Mishkan.) One might have expected the women ofIs .rael could rest on their laurels, hay : ~ing not participated in the sin of the Golden Calf. But cjuite to the con trary—”the men came following on the heels of the women” (Shemot 35:22) in bring contributions. The Baalei Tosaphot (ad bc.) say that it was the combination of the resis tance of the women and giving their jewels to the Mishkan that earned them the holiday of Rosh Chodesh and in particular the New Moon of Nisan when the Tabernacle was erected. Thus the women displayed active as well as passive courage of their convictions in earning the holi day of Rosh Chodesh.

“Letlers ThatLink

OurPeople Together..

As envisioned, the campaign would involve each of the approximately 14 million members of the Jewish com munity.

“The Philadelphia community is proud to host this very significant event,” declared Rabbi Abraham Shemtov, Regional Director, Lubavitch of Pennsylvania. Indus trialist and community leader, Isa dore M. Scott, Chairman of the Board of Tosco Corporation, served as Chairman of the Independence Hall Ceremony.

Rabbi Shemtov announced that Mr. Lawrence Katz will chair the “Ambassadors’ Club”, a newly formed group ofphilanthropists and community leaders who will sponsor the members of their synagogues and organizations in order to stimu late community response.

Such a ceremony has been reenacted—or is on the verge ofbeing duplicated in key Jewish com munities in the United States and throughout the world until not a single/man, woman and child will not be represented in this expression of Jewish solidarity and the reaffir mation of oneness with our tradi tion. The Committee for Sefer Torah, in care of the Hanholo of the United Lubavitcher Yeshivoth Tomchei Tmimim, with headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn 11213, is calling on each of us to UNITE WITH JEWS THE WORLD OVER, in this extraordinary Inspirational pro ject from which no Jewish heart can turn aside. Can there be a better way than uniting through a Sefer Torah? They ask.

Independence Hall, Philadelphia, Pa, birthplace of the American Con stitution, was the setting Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1981, of a historic “Write to Unite” ceremony, during which a specially trained scribe began hand lettering a Torah scroll to symbolize the linkage of Jews throughout the world.

“Write to Unite” represents an un precedented global effort to unite the entire worldwide Jewish community through the writing of traditional

Torah scrolls, which contain the five books of Moses. In initiating this unique campaign the renowned Jewish leader, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe Shlita expressed his goal of enabling all Jews to obtain a letter in the Torah. Each scroll contains 304,805 letters. Upon its comple tion, this “Pennsylvania Torah Scroll” will join some 45 similar scrolls being hand written in Jewish communities throughout the world.

Their literature, available at schools, synagogues, stores, railroad stations, street corners, airports, and anywhere else you can think of, is being disseminated by dedicated volunteers, young and adult, who have expanded their mitzvah cam paign into this ultimate of Jewish identification. The literature is brief and simple. We quote:

These are difficult times. The world situation is becoming in creasingly unstable. Dark clouds threaten the future. Ourpeople, both in the Holy land and in the Diaspora, are surrounded by enemies, ready to

First, I want to apologize for the misinformation that was conveyed in my last Pesach article. It was uninten tional, and we are sorry. I was notified by one ofthe exec utives ofthe HuntWesson Oil Company that the firm was not going to produce special cottonseed oil for Passover. I therefore informed our readers of this fact so they could plan accordingly. After the article was printed, I was told that Hunt Wesson had decided to manufacture their oil for Pesach. Their advertisement was published without my knowledge. In any event, I am sure that you are as happy as we are that this high quality oil was available, Kosher for Pesach, at a reasonable price.

Much publicity was given before Yom Toy by a certain organization about the very high prices for Pesach prod ucts. Their efforts were and are quite admirable. Unfor tunately, however, we saw not a word about the price of kosher chickens which is controlled by two producers.

The other day in Shul, a Russian Jew who comes to daven regularly was discovered not to be keeping a kosher home. We were amazed. We confronted him and asked him why, and he responded with considerable em barrassment: “I can’t afford to keep a kosher home. Kosher chicken costs 1.49 a pound, non-kosher chicken costs 49~ a pound!”

Everyone realizes that kosher chicken should cost more because extra expenses are involved. But how much more? In the past, when a Shochet used to slaugh ter 75 chickens an hour in a retail market, a kosher fowl cost a few cents more per pound. Today a Shochet slaughters between 1000 and 1200 chickens an hour and the price of kosher chickens is three times the price ofchickens that are not kosher! What excuse for the tripl ing of the price? I have not found a single Shochet who has become a millionaire slaughtering chickens.

Once I supervised a shechita where we did not allow a Shochet to kill more than 600 fowl an hour—which is only

KEEPING KOSHER

The Cost of Kosher Chicken Cooking in Lard

half the number of the present average shechita. Yet the producer was able to realize a fine profit, even though he was selling the chickens for substantially less than any of the other producers! I remember being called by another well known Rabbi who is involved in kosher supervision and being warned that we would not be able to keep the shechita going if we did not increase the price of our product. Just then the competitors came down on their prices and succeeded in forcing my shechita out of busi ness. Why are prices of chickens so high? A thorough in vestigation should be made and names named. It should shake a lot of feathers.

We have mentioned in several articles that one can not rely on labels and what is written on them. A case in point: recently I discovered something that most persons are not aware of. I went through a factory which proces sed a food product that was deep fried in vegetable shor tening. I examined the label on the package and the list of ingredients that were printed thereon. There was no mention at all of vegetable shortening. I made inquiry, and the explanation given me was that as long as no veg etable shortening was used in the product and the prod uct was only cooked in vegetable shortening—or any other shortening—the law did not require the listing of the shortening as an ingredient on the package. In other words, the company could befrying the product in lard and there need be no mention ofit on thepackage, and they would not be breaking the law!

This is one more reason why it is necessaryto have a re liable and responsible Hechsher on any processed food you purchase.

From time to time you must have seen the notices placed by kashruth agencies alerting the public to the sad fact that food processors were fraudulently using their seal of

kashruth on foods that were not under theirsupervision. This has also been happening to 0 Laboratories: our 0 seal has been used without approval.

One would think that when this happens all one would have to do is put in a call to the District Attorney and he would put an immediate stop to such violations and mis representations. Unfortunately, this is not so. In order to halt the criminal misuse of the seal, one must hire a lawyer and go to court. It becomes an involved, lengthy and costly matter. It is difficult to understand why some thing can notbe done to bringsuch action to a speedy ter mination, legally. All ® Laboratories is able to do is to publish a list of the products we supervise every two months and keep our Kosher Food Guide up to date, so homemakers using our products can always check it and check against it. We are the only kashruth agency that is doing this, for the protection of our friends.

A request to our readers: Won’t you please bring to our attention the name and address ofany product using our ® that is not listed in The Kosher Food Guide? It will be greatly appreciated by us, and you will be performing a true service for those who rely upon us.

In honor of Miriam

(Continuedfrom page 9)

“The midwives feared G-d and did not as the king commanded, and saved the men-children alive” (Shemot 1:17).

Thus the Torah emphasizes that the principle virtue to be extolled is fear of Hashem, from which all other attributes can be derived. Without this fear of an Almighty King su preme over any temporal king, it would not have been possible for Miriam (and her mother) to be pos sessed of the bravery to defy Pharaoh.

When Pharoah charged his sub jects with the task of infanticide of the Hebrew males he proclaimed:

“Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river” (Shemot 1:22).

Miriam’s parents had decided to divorce one another because of the threat of death hanging over any further new-born babies. Such was the despairwrought byPharoah’s de cree that all the Israelites decided to follow the example of Miriam’s par ents, and divorced their wives to pre

farm—fresh dairy foods from our own country creameries opwell

vent further conceptions.

Miriam continued to care for her brother’s safety after his birth, fol lowing which his mother concealed him for three months. Miriam’s faith in Hashem enabled her to see beyond the present evil and prophesy future good. She proclaimed to her parents that what they were doing was worse than what Pharaoh had done. Pharaoh was killing only the male children but now Amram and his wife were resposible for the loss of countless thousands of both male and female chidren because all of Is rael were following their example.

Furthermore she declared that her mother was to give birth to a son who would save Israel from slavery and persecution in Egypt. Her prophecy so inspired her parents that they remarried, and all the Is raelites also remarried. so Moshe was born.

On observing her mother’s at tempt to save Moshe’s life by hiding him in an Ark among the bulrushes on the banks of the Nile, Miriam “stood at a distance to know (Shemot 2:4) what would happen to her brother. She also wished to learn how long it would be before her prophecy would be fulfilled. Miriam showed great resourcefulness in Moshe’s moment of danger when he was discovered by Pharaoh’s daugh

ter, in taking advantage of the prin cess’s compassion on the “aban doned” baby, by offering to procure a Hebrew nurse (her own mother) to suckle the babe.

Hashem rewarded these pious women (Yocheved and Miriam) who saved Moshe, the future Liberator and Law-Giver, by making for them “Houses” (Shemot 1:21). Rashi com ments that from Yocheved and Miriam respectively stemmed a Hosue of the Lord (the Priests and the Levites) and a House ofKings. In deed, what greater reward could there be for the faith these women displayed?

The spirit of our benefactress Miriam remains with us even to this day, for although the water ofthe well with which she is associated ceased to flow on her death, its goodness continues for evermore. Indeed, the well of Miriam has come to represent the fountain and wellsprings from which the ideals of Jewish woman hood come forth. It is also said that there is a custom to draw water from a well at the conclusion of Shabbat, for at that time the water which be longed to theWell ofMiriam fills every other well, and whoever comes into contact with it or drinks it, is cured of all their ailments (Kitov: The Book of Our Heritage, Book II, p. 162—”Kol-Bo”).

pounce at the slightest sign of weak ness.

In such times, it is essential that we revert to our age-old source of strength: JEWISH UNITY. But the unity must be expressed through a factor common to Jews of diverse lands and languages, cultures and lifestyles, opinions and outlooks. The single unifying factor through out the three and a half millenia of our history has been the Torah. And it is through the Torah that all Jews become united with G-d Himself.

The LUBAVITCHER REBBE, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson Shlita, has proposed that each and every Jew the world over unite through the Torah by—acquiring let ters, one for each person, in a Sefer Torah written especially for this pur pose, a SEFER TORAH OF JEWISH UNITY.

The Rebbe further suggested that the United Lubavitcher Yeshivoth— traditionally known as Tomchei Tmimim—together with all its vari ous branches and Lubavitcher Yeshivoth in all lands, initiate the writing of such a Sefer Torah.

In retrospect, the Yeshiva experience has had an impact upon me, greater than would have ever imagined.

Forgive me: I have spoken of myself throughout these pages. First person singular. But perhaps you have disco vered particles of your own self in these sentences some of you. Perhaps you agree: what you find out to be true about yourself, is very often also true for your fellow man, your neighbor, your friend. This may sound rather moralizing, nevertheless it shall be said: if the Rab bis ask you to stay. stay. Try. Stay for six months, stay for a year. Or more. All can say for myself: hope shall return to Jerusalem and my Yeshiva before too long for some serious learning

One of many, making a clean breast of his Why? The heads of their Yeshivot have much much more to relate. It would be to the advantage of the future to pay their schools a visit, in the U.S. and abroad.. to see and to listen.

The Sefer Torah is being written right nowby an accomplished scribe. The many thousands who have al ready acquired letters await your participation so that the SEFER TORAH OF JEWISH UNITY may be speedily completed.

We urge you tojoin us now in unit ing Jews the world over. Besides per forming a great Mitzva, you will be contributing to the peace and har mony of the world.

Besides acquiring a letter for your self in this unique Sefer Torah, you will certainly want to acquire letters for all members ofyour family and.for your friends. Letters may be bought for men or women, boys or girls (even those who have acquired letters in other Sifrei Torah). Please try to in clude as many Jews as possible. You may even dedicate a letter as a beau tiful memorial for a departed dear one.

For each letter you purchase, en close a sum you consider appropri ate.
