REGARDING JEWS FROM RUSSIA/ISRAEL OR AMERICA?
We are presenting the comments of Macy A. Gordon, who is rabbi of Bnai Yeshurun Congregation in Teaneck, on a subject that has aroused much thought and controversy. It is not an issue that is limited to a single community, nor is it one for which there is a one-and-only an swer. The highest echelons in Israel are wrestling with the problem—the morality and ethics involved; and many in the United States are be ginning to give it considerable attention.
The following is quoted verbatim. Your reactions are solicited.
A wide-ranging community issue of major importance has come up, and it warrants the attention, de liberation, and earnest concern of every thoughtful member of the Jewish community in Bergen Coun ty. It’s a “no-win” issue, because it involves a very difficult situation, to which there is absolutely no “right” answer. And that is probably why it has generated so much strong feeling.
The problem revolves around So viet Jews who leave the USSR on a visa for Israel, based on an “invi tation from a relative” in Israel, and then, arriving at Vienna, opt NOT to go to Israel but to greener pas tures. Oddly, the ethical question in volved can NOT be raised, because we are hardly in a position to preach ethics to refugees from the Soviet Union. But there are some very practical questions that CAN be raised.
GIVEN: We, as Jews, have an ob ligation to assist any Jew who wants to leave the Soviet Union. We must expend whatever time, effort, and financial resources necessary to assist their emigration, because no meaningful Jewish life can be projected under present conditions in the USSR. This is simply hatzo las netoshos.
GIVEN: We, as Jews, have an ob ligation to help anyone in our midst who is in need. Many Soviet emi gres need aid in resettlement, and that aid is provided by the local UJC, Family Service, and other
groups. That aid continues as long as it is needed, regardless of the sacrifice that it involves.
The PROBLEMS:
a. Jewish emigration from the Soviet Union is endangered by this “change of mind” after leaving the USSR. The Soviet Union has “re cognized” (to some extent) a right of Jews to be reunited with Jews in the Jewish State. It does NOT recognize the right of any minority (including Jews) to emigrate to the U.S. or any other country simply be cause of freedom of choice.
b. Israel is in desperate need of Jewish immirgration. Soviet Jews could form the nucleus of an im portant aliyah to Israel.
c. Many, if not most Soviet Jews, after coming to the U.S., have little or no affiliation with the Jewish community. They were not trained as Jews, did not grow up as part of a Jewish community, and the likelihood of their disappearance AS JEWS is all too great.
d. American Jewish charitable funds are a limited resource. They have two major goals: support of Israel, and support of Jews in need, anywhere. The funds spent on re settling Soviet Jews in the U.S. are funds that cannot benefit Israel, whereas funds spent on resettling Soviet Jews in Israel serve that dual purpose.
e. FREEDOM OF CHOICE. This is the BIGGEST problem. To what ex tent does the American Jewish community have the right to tell Soviet Jews in Austria, “Go to Is rael, not America.” Did they not leave the USSR precisely because they have a right to their own free dom of choice? On the other hand, to what extent does that freedom of choice have the right to exer cise demands on the tzedaka funds of the Jewish community? Doesn’t the American Jewish community have the right, if not the obligation, to use its charitable dollar in the way that will benefit the Jewish community as a whole? And could one not argue that the dollar spent on resettling a Soviet Jew in the U.S., rather than in Israel, is a dollar spent to further the risk of assimilation rather than ensure Jew ish survival?
These are weighty questions, and they will be on the forum of public debate in the near future.
The local United Jewish Commun ity, by an overwhelming majority, recently passed a resolution (the entire text was published in The Jewish Standard) which takes a bold step. Briefly:
A. It reaffirms total support and resources for helping Jews get out of the Soviet Union.
B. It offers total support to Jews arriving in Vienna on Israeli visas, for their resettlement in Israel. Jews who wish to come to America may do so of right, but by utilizing their own or family resources.
C. The UJC of Bergen County will not accept additional Russian Jews for resettlement.
D. It commits itself to continue to support and assist Russian Jews (and all others who are in need) who are already resident in Bergen County.
This resolution was presented at the Annual Conference of the Gen eral Assembly of Federations some weeks ago. At the time, Bergen County was the only community that had taken such a step. The reso lution was tabled by a vote of about 60-40. Opponents of this resolution call this a defeat. Proponents say that this is a show of support, con sidering that the whole issue is only a few months old, and was pre sented by only one delegation.
The present Government of Israel, the Jewish Agency, leading mem bers of National UJA, and many prominent former refuseniks, sup port the thrust of this resolution.
Most local Federations, HIAS, NYANA, and many prominent per sons in Bergen County, are op posed to the resolution or, at least, feel uncomfortable with it.

Who Is A Jew?
Letter from the Lubavitcher Rebbe shlita to David Ben-Gurion
His Excellency, Mr. David Ben-Gurion, Prime Minister of Israel
Greetings:
This is in reply to your letter re garding my opinion on the Regis tration of children of mixed mar riages, when the father is a Jew and the mother a non-Jew who did not undergo conversion before the birth of the child. The intent of the in quiry is—as the wording of the reso lution has it in the above mentioned letter—”to define instructions that should be in harmony with the tra dition accepted in all circles of Ju daism, both orthodox and non-or thodox of all trends, and with the special conditions of Israel as a Sovereign State which guarantees freedom of conscience and religion as a center of ingathering the exiles.”
My opinion is absolutely clear, in conformity with the Torah and the tradition accepted for generations, that in these matters there can be no validity whatsoever to a verbal declaration expressing the desire to register as a Jew. Such a declara tion has no power to change the reality.
According to the Torah and the tradition of ages which still exists today, a Jew is only a person born of a Jewish mother; or a proselyte who had been converted in con-
formity with the exact procedure laid down in the authoritative codes of Judaism from ancient times down to the Shuichan Aruk.
The above applies not only to children whose parents or guardians declare their desire to register them as Jews, but to whosoever comes forward to declare his wish to change his status in order to enter the Jewish community. Such a dec laration has no force whatever un less he actually fulfills, or has ful filled the appropriate conversion procedure as laid down in the Jew ish codes in the Shuichan Aruk, as above.

All that follows now is merely an additional postscript, written with the intention of emphasizing that even if the following is not accepted, either in part or in full, this does not detract at all from the finality of the opinion I have outlined above.
The following remarks are merely a reaction to the account of the situation delineated in your letter.
a. The question of registration, or
however it may be described, is not a matter confined to Israel alone. It goes without saying—as explained in your letter—that no one may raise a barrier between the Jews of Israel and those of the Diaspora. On the contrary, all our brethren, wher ever they may be, have constituted one people, from the moment of their emergence, in spite of their dispersion in all the corners of the world. Consequently the solution of the problem must be one that is acceptable to all members of the Jewish people everywhere, that is capable of forging and strengthen ing the bonds of unity between all Jews, and certainly not one that would be cause, even the remotest, of disunity and dissension. Accord ingly, even if you may argue that the present conditions in Eretz Israel call for a special study of the abovementioned question, these condi tions do not restrict the problem to Eretz Israel, but, as noted, consti tute a matter of common concern to every Jew everywhere.
b. The belonging to the Jewish people was never considered by our people as a formal, external matter. It has always been defined and de lineated in terms of the commitment of the whole being of the Jew, some thing intimately linked with his very essence and innermost experience. Accordingly, any movement which disregards or belittles any of the procedures in this connection de grades the feeling of belonging to the Jewish people and cannot but be detrimental to the serious and profound attitude towards the Jew’s inner link with his people.
c. To ease the conditions of tran sition and affiliation to the Jewish people—particularly in the special circumstances of Eretz Israel, sur rounded by countries and peoples unsympathetic towards it (that is an understatement)—is to endanger

laws did not apply to a people dis persed the world over. Hence it was felt that these rules might be omitted from such a compendium which would be a reference book for use in everyday practice.
Here’s the second installment which I promised you on the subject of the two Laws which, together, make up the one Torah which is binding upon all of us.
In my last letter, you will re member, I told you something about the structure of the Talmud, which is the basic reference on all matters of Jewish law. At the same time, I mentioned that most of the opin ions that form the Talmudic com mentary to the Mishna are not clear cut statements and that there fore, the Jews soon found that not every person had sufficient learning to make use of the Talmudic text for guidance in matters of Jewish law involving his personal life.
Now the generations immediately following the compilation of the Talmud were blessed with eminent authorities who lived in the land of Babylonia where they headed the famous academies at Sura and Pum beditha. These great rabbis were known as Gaonim (or “Emi nences”). Interestingly enough if you take the Hebrew letters of the singular of this term, Gaon, and add together the numerical value of these letters (you know, of course, that each Hebrew letter also stands for a numeral) you get a total of sixty and this is most fitting, since
it was expected that every Gaon would be familiar with all the sixty masechtoth or sections of the Tal mud! These Gaonim gradually be came the authorities, recognized by Jews the world over, who would receive and answer myriads of ques tions an problems presented to them by rabbis, teachers, and just plain Jews from every place where Jews resided. These questions they would answer either orally (if that was possible) or else in writing. At times this involved quite lengthy correspondence. Much of this cor respondence (known as the Gaonic Responsa) was compiled and dis tributed to Jewish communities all over the world for the guidance of all those with problems similar to the ones the responsa dealt with.
But despite this great help, there was an obvious need for an allinclusive work, containing a more concise compendium of Jewish law. What was needed would be a book which would contain not a mass of opinions, but only those opinions which were to be accepted as bind ing. Moreover, the greater part of the volumes “Zeraim,” “Kodoshim” and “Taharoth” was applicable only to a situation where the Jewish peo pie had a Torah state of their own, with a Temple in Jerusalem. These
The first to apply himself to this task was Rabbi isaac ben Jacob Alfasi (1013-1103), also known by his initials as RIF. This eminent rabbi, who was born in Fez, Moroc co and fled to Spain when already well in his seventies, compiled a work which became known as “Tal mud Koton,” “The Little Talmud.” This volume consisted of direct quo tations from the actual Talmud, with the only difference that those opinions stated in the Talmud which were generally not accepted as the final word were omitted. Of course this selection of authoritative opin ions was not done in an arbitrary way. The RIF went to infinite pains to give ample proof from the Tal mud itself to show which of the many opinions given in the Talmud for each individual case was the one to be followed by observing Jews.
A few years later, a Western Eu ropean Rabbi, Shelomo Yitzchaki (known by his initials as RASH!) had written a detailed commentary on both the Bible and the Talmud. His commentary is universally re cognized as the most lucid and com prehensive of its kind.
With the Gaonim gone, other rabbis, who lived in France and Germany, undertook to write down explanations for difficult passages in the Talmud and answers to ques tions which came up in the everyday study of Jewish law. The compiled results of these efforts were called “Tosafoth” or “Additions,” for these were not changes, Heaven forbid, in the Law, but only “addi tions” to the commentaries of Rashi in order to make the Talmud still better understood.
Naturally these rabbis, who lived in France and Germany, would, in

their work, reflect the opinions of Western European rabbis. And just as naturally, the “Little Talmud” written by Alfasi, presented the views of scholars living in Spain and Northern Africa. Rabbi Asher ben Yehiel (who was born in Ger many in 1250 and died in Spain in 1327; he was known by his initials as ROSH) wrote a new book closely resembling that compiled by the RIF, with the exception that it in cluded also the opinions of the rabbis of France and Germany.
Through the succeeding genera tions a great many other rabbis wrote books enumerating the laws of the Talmud as applicable to the everyday lives of Jews living not in a state of their own but in alien lands. Most notable among these works was that written by Rabbi Moses ben Maimon (Maimonides or RaMBaM). His commentary was different from those preceding in that he employed not the language of the Talmud, but a simple, easilyunderstood style of his own. In addition, he compiled a comprehen sive digest of all the laws relating to the 613 mitzvoth set down in the Written Law, including also those which could not be observed while the Jewish people was in exile.
What with this huge wealth of new commentaries, written by great authorities from many different lands, the average Jew once more became somewhat bewildered and longed for a single standard work in which laws could be looked up with greater dispatch.
Rabbi Jacob ben Asher (son of Asher ben Yehiel) who was born in Germany in 1269 and died in Spain in 1343, undertook to compile such a work. This new reference book was arranged in an order dif ferent from that of the Talmud and previous works of this nature. Rabbi Jacob arranged the laws in accord ance with the order they occupied in the everyday life of the ordinary
Jew, rather than in the order in which they were originally set forth, and which had done little to help the average Jew find his way through the complicated maze of legislation. Thus Rabbi Jacob’s mas terpiece was divided into four parts (“Turim” or “Rows”). These were I. The “Orach Chayim” or “Way of Life,” which contained all those laws that every Jew must observe each day, such as those regarding prayer, the putting on of Tefillin, the wearing of Tzitzith, and so forth;
2. “Yoreh Deah” (Teaching of Wis dom”), including all the dietary laws (kosher foods) and related regula tions;
3. “Even Ha-Ezer” (“The Book of Support”) embraced all the legislation dealing with Jewish mar riage and family living; 4. “Choshen Ha-Mishpat” (“Shield of Righteous Judgment”) dealt with those laws regulating business and financial ethics. This arrangement made it comparatively simple for any Jew of average learning to look up the in formation he required, and even to memorize it in logical order.
But Rabbi Jacob, being a man of exceptional humility, did not attempt to point out which of the opinions he quoted were the universally ac cepted ones and therefore, in his judgment, binding. He left this up to others to decide all he wanted to do was to arrange existing opinions in logical order. Since he made no attempt to cite preferred opinions, he did not feel the need to quote the exact place in the Talmud from which each law had originated.
Rabbi Joseph Caro (born in 1488, died in Safed, Palestine, in 1575) supplied that which it was felt was lacking in Rabbi Jacob’s work. In his commentary on the “Tur,” entitled “Beth Joseph,” he pointed out the Talmudic sources for each law, and also took it upon himself to decide which opinion should be the one followed in those
instances where there were more than one given.
But Caro’s most important work was the one he called the “Shul chan Aruch” (or “the Prepared Table”) where all the laws are set forth in readiness, for those seeking information, much like a table hold ing everything required for a meal without further preparation. In the “Shulchan Aruch,” Rabbi Caro cites only those opinions which he had cited as binding in his “Beth Jo seph.” Like the “Tur,” the “Shul chan Aruch” is divided into four parts, each of which, in turn, is apportioned into chapters ad para graphs. Written in simple language, it is readily accessible to anyone with even a modicum of Jewish learning.
But there was something lacking even in this monumental work. Rabbi Caro, you see, spent much of his later life in Eretz Yisrael, and therefore was not familiar with the opinions and time-hallowed cus toms that had grown up, (based on Talmudic law, of course) in the Jewish communities of Europe. In fact, many of the opinions which he expressed were quite at variance with practices that had been fol lowed for generations by Jews in those countries. This lack was reme died by Rabbi Moses ben Israel Is serles, of Cracow, Poland, a con temporary of Rabbi Caro’s. Rabbi Isserles, who is known by his initials of ReMo, assembled all those laws where European Jews differed from the opinions set forth in Caro’s “Shulchan Aruch,” made them part of the “Shulchan Aruch” and attach ed his own notes and comments to those parts of Caro’s work where he felt such comment was needed.
It did not take long for the “Shul chan Aruch,” together with the work of the ReMo, to be recognized by Jews the world over as the uniform, authoritative and comprehensive

guide to be followed by any Jew who wanted to arrange his life in accordance with the law of the Torah (which, as I don’t think I have to repeat here, includes both the Written Law and the Oral Tra dition).
Thus it came to pass that the opinions advanced in the “Shuichan Aruch” were generally accepted as binding and it was only under duress, and then with great reluc tance, that even the greatest Torah authorities would contradict them and elect to follow one of the other opinions set forth in earlier works or in the original Talmud.
Today the “Shuichan Aruch” also does not stand alone. Every edition of the Shuichan Aruch contains, side by side with the text, a number of commentaries written by the emi nent rabbinic authorities whose names I think, you ought to know and remember. They are:
1. Rabbi David ben Samuel haLevi (who lived in Poland from 1586 to 1667), who wrote a com mentary on all four parts of the “Shulchan Aruch.” He called his work “Turei Zahav” or “The Gol den Rows,” and has gone down in history by the initials of his work, i.e., “TAZ.”
2. Rabbi Abraham Gombiner (Abraham Abele ben Chayim Halevi, born in Gombin, Poland, in 1635, and died in Kalish, Poland, in 1683). His work, “Magen Abra ham” (“The Shield of Abraham”) is a commentary on the “Orach Chayim.”
3. Rabbi Shabse ben Meir ha Kohen (born in Vilna in 1621, died in Holleschau 1662), the author of “Siftei Kohen” (“The Lips of the Priest”), a commentary on “Yoreh Deah” and “Choshen Mishpat.”
4. Rabbi Samuel of Sidlovei, Po land, author of “Beth Shemuel” (“The House of Samuel”), a com mentary on “Even Ha-Ezer.”
5. Rabbi Moshe of Latvia, author
of another commentary on the “Even Ha-Ezer,” “Chelkas Mecho kek.”
6. Rabbi Falk Ha-Kohen, of Cra cow, Poland, author of a commen tary on “Choshen Ha-Mishpat.”

These commentaries are found in every printed edition of the Shul chan Aruch.
Any student who wants to be ordained a Rabbi must pass an examination in those parts of the “Shulchan Aruch” that he will have to use most frequently in rendering decisions; a great part of this test deals with “Orach Chayim” and “Yoreh Deah.” No student can be ordained before giving satisfactory proof of thorough familiarity with these reference books on Jewish Law.
Today, when an observant Jew finds he has a problem where Jewish law is involved, he will not attempt to find the answer for himself, but consult a duly ordained Orthodox rabbi. The rabbi will attempt to find the proper decision in the “Shulchan Aruch.” Of course this volume does not provide a regulation to suit every possible contingency in daily living. If the rabbi cannot relate the problem presented to him with anything set forth in the “Shulchan Aruch,” he will consult an older work as that of the RIF, or that of Maimonides, failing a satisfactory answer in any of these; he will go through the difficult task of finding an opinion in the original Talmud that would apply to the problem at hand. Never will a responsible rabbi attempt to set forth rules of his own making without any basis in the “Shuichan Aruch” or at least in the Talmud. His decisions are handed down only after careful and tho rough deliberation, and with a pain-
staking expose showing the Talmu dic or Rabbinic sources on which he bases his final decision. Usually rabbis called upon to make a great many such decisions will set them down in writing as guides for future gunerations.
But every rabbinic decision hand ed down by a responsible orthodox rabbi will be based on laws already existing, and those laws all go back to the same source—the set of teachings, one written and one oral, handed down to Moses on Mount Sinai by none other than G-d Him self.

What will your sons and daughters be when they grow up?
Jews, of course.
But will they appreciate why? Will they know how? Will they know?
It is only natural, when Jewish youngsters grow up, for them to ask themselves, “Why am I a Jew? What is Judaism all about? What does it mean to me?”
Imagine how frustrated they will be if they have not been taught the answers. Frustrated and disappointed. Everyone parents, friends, strangers—calls them Jews and they don’t fully know what it means. Here is a people that they are inevit ably a part of, a way of life that has endured for thousands of years, and being Jewish has no “relevance” of years, and being Jewish has no “relevance” for them!
Yes, frustrated, disappointed and angry! And no doubt they will say to themselves, or to you, “It’s all my parents’ fault! They never taught me anything about being Jewish. They never sent me to a school where I might have learned. Am I supposed to begin learning now, when I am so busy with other things, when it is so embarrassing to display my ignorance?”

Korban Pesach and the Symbolism of Sacrifice

mental and temporal means of lending expression to those basic needs? These are only some ele mentary questions among many others which deserve full treatment in the light of biblical, rabbinic and Jewish philosophical literature. Here I shall only sketch the broad out lines of the psychological and spir itual functions of sacrifice.
Korbanoth? Only through control of the source of sin is this possible.
Torah literature constantly symbo lizes the heart as the “agent of sin,” of those urges that tend to drive man away from following freely the Di vine Will. The difference between the faithful and the faithless, there fore, is that whilst the former “do minates his heart,” the latter is “dominated by it”; the heart sym bolizing the body’s most vital organ and so the most concrete representa tive of life generally. (What Torahliterature terms as “heart” includes what contemporary psychology—es pecially logotherapy—would desig nate as “conscience.”)
PRAYER BOOK
“May it be Thy will 0 Lord our G-d and G-d of our Fathers, that the Temple be speedily rebuilt in our days and then we will serve Thee with awe, as in the days of old. .“
Pesach marks the offering of the first communal sacrifice of Israel—the Korban Pesach. The importance of sacrifice as an integral part of the relationship between Ha-shem and His people is dramatically ex emplified by this act; a people about to leave a bondage of 210 years is commanded, virtually the first com mand to the people as a whole, to sacrifice a lamb and put its blood as a sign on their doorposts.
Yet modern man feels so es tranged from the concept of sacrifice that it is difficult for him to reconcile his understanding of spiritual devel opment with the promised re-insti tution of this very practice of sacri fice. It will be worthwhile, then, to probe for once the psychological background of this Avodah.
What idea lies at the root of the offering of sacrifices? Does their performance satisfy certain needs consonant with man’s original na ture? If so, are they altogether essen tial and permanent or merely instru
The Hebrew term for sacrifice, “korban,” is derived from “karov,” meaning near; indicating thus that the total object of any offering is simply to gain or regain a greater nearness to G-d. Within the frame work of this conception of sacrifice, the idea of atonement looms large; hence for a clearer understanding of the meaning of sacrifice, a restate ment of the common factor in all sins is necessary.
True perfection in man results, according to the Torah, from his suc cessful emergence as a victor in the continual strife between the evil inclination and the good inclination, a struggle that goes on throughout his life. Man is endowed with free will and consequently is responsible for any failings. The Torah educates us to free man from indulgence in self-centered urges and drives, and to the degree that man acts in accord with the Divine Will, he is free. The reverse holds true if man falls short of G-d’s will, assuming an ego centric attitude towards life. This then is sin; a wrong condition of the self setting up a deep disturbance and disharmony in the soul. Without elaborating Jewish’ philosophical views of the causation of sin we may summarize by saying that Judaism looks upon sin, ‘Averah,’ primarily as mental error and deviation from the right path: ‘Chet’ as “missing the mark,” ‘Avon’ as crookedness of the straight, and ‘Pesha’ as re bellious denial of G-d.
How can man be deterred from sinning? In which way can a dra matic change be achieved through
Sin may be perpetrated conscious ly or not. In the first case, the wrongdoer is aware that he acts against the Torah. To him atone ment by means of a sacrifice is merely non-sensical formalism. In the second case, however, the sinner meant no ill. Yet by erring, though only unwittingly, he proved that the practice of G-d’s law had not yet become natural and completely “willed” by him. To know what is right does not necessarily imply ac tion in accordance with that knowl edge. Hence the sacrifices, which were intended to translate dramatic ally the convictions of the mind into the emotions of the heart, thus in vesting man with a true “Torahsense.” Thus, the Korbanoth had as their chief aim the transformation of the unthinking sinner into a per son whose unwitting as well as de liberate actions would agree with the laws of the Torah. (cf. More Nebuchim Part III, Chap. 47).
How was this actually achieved? The central symbol of the sacrfficial service was the blood of the animal, since together with the heart it rep resents the forces of life. This blood which hitherto served to stir the animal instincts, now demonstrated on the altar, dedication to G-d. “Let the nefesh come and atone for the

nefesh.” To this end of a “vicarious transference,” the animal was sac rificed on the altar.
The Torah permits us to slaughter an animal so that man may have food to live. Sacrifices, however, present a higher ideal than man’s craving for meat. The animal perish es in order to impress upon men the destructive nature of the forces of sin and cruelty and so to effectively engender repentance. In the solemn atmosphere of the Temple, the sinner was forced to deprive himself of an animal that would be killed not to satisfy his appetite, but to enable him to serve G-d, to come nearer to him.
Every step of the process of sac rifice served to create in the partici pant this deeper consciousness of sin and the concommitant transference. It was the “animal” (in contempo rary psychology designated as the “id”) in the sinner which had caused him to transgress. Thus the animal was slaughtered, and stripped of that “life” substance which had agi tated its instincts. Even after the animal was killed, there remained a very intricate service in which its most “brutish” part, the blood, was gathered and carried to the altar. This ceremony was carried out in a manner and atmosphere of gripping awe that must have made the sinner feel revulsion at the memory of his sin. Then the Cohen took the blood and sprinkled it on the corners of the altar. Only in the presence of death itself, at the sight of the blood being sprinkled on the altar, was there hope for a true repentance. The whole process of the sacrificial service aimed at a tremendous, au tonomous ethical effort on the part of the person involved in contra distinction to unresolved morbid guilt or attempts at atonement through irrational mystic “grace.”
The symbolic impact of the Kor banoth was of central significance; it was solely the lack of this con-
scious symbolic understanding which was responsible for the prophets’ frequent reproaches against the over-zealous but soulless offering up of sacrifices at certain periods in Jewish history. And it is the same symbolic impact to which the mod ern psychologist must be said to have reference when he speaks of the cue or symbol as being of utmost importance in modifying behavior. Indeed, psychology today is keenly interested in affecting changes in human behavior; yet many are the candid admissions by famous psy chological counsellors of how futile contemporary therapeutic means have proven. In contrast to this con fessed inadequacy stands the dra matic and profoundly affecting ex perience of the sacrificial service. An effective method for behavioral change, which so evades the modern psychologist, is presented in the Avodah of Korbanoth.
Thus conceived, the offering of Korbanoth can clearly be seen to serve a therapeutic purpose. And it may well be that not only are the effects of the Avodah beneficial, but that the A vodah itself serves as an ennoblement of a basic human need to offer sacrifices. When the Rambarn explains our Korbanoth as counterpointing the heathen sacri ficial customs, he postulates both the relative need of Korbanoth
(More Nebuchim, Part III, Chapter 45) as well as their therapeutic character (ibid., Chap. 46).
In light of these considerations, it is incumbent upon us not only to overcome any reservations which we might have towards the institution of sacrifice, but rather to long for the day of the Revival of the Service of the Temple. Readers should be reminded, in this connection, of the intensive study of “Kodoshim” knowledge pertaining to the Temple and its Service—which took place in the great Lithuanian Yeshivoth, especially in the last decades before the Holocaust. I, for one, shall never forget the fervor with which the Chafetz Chaim, that great sage who blazed nerw paths relighting the horizon of Jewish idealism, taught us the importance of knowing “Ko doshim.”
It is for us to try and re-capture that fervor and that idealism. De spite the momentous tribulations that beset the political arena today, “the Mitzvah is incumbent upon us to study the Building of the Tem ple and its vessels and even more so in a time such as ours, when we are privileged to see the signs of the Geulah coming nearer and the voice of the dove is heard in our land .“ (Chief Rabbi Z. Frank in the introduction to Har Tsvi).

8. It is well to put some of the spice called ‘musk’ among the other spices, as all authorities agree that the benediction over musk is Bore mine besamim. One should also take some of the myrtle branches (used as one of the four species on the Feast of Tabernacles), inasmuch as a mitzvah has been performed with it once, it is fitting that another mitzvah should be performed with it.
9. It is preferable that the hay dalah candle should be of wax and consist of several strands twisted to gether which makes a torch. But if we have no such candle, we should use two candles, holding them close together so that both flames merge in one like a torch. It is customary that after saying the benediction, Bore meore haesh, to look at the fingernails and the palm of the right hand. One should bend the four fingers into the palm of the hand, resting them on the thumb, and look at the nails and at the palm at the same time, then stretch out the fingers, and look at the back of the nails.
10. A sightless man should not pronounce the benediction over the light, nor should one who lacks the sense of smell pronounce the bene diction over the spices.
11. If after pronouncing the bene diction over the wine, and while holding the spices in the hand, in tending to pronounce the benedic tion over it, we err and say instead the benediction, Bore meore haesh, but we instantly become aware of the error, and say, Bore mine be samim, it is a valid benediction over the spices, and we should afterward
pronounce the benediction over the light. If, however, it has been our original intention to pronounce that benediction over the light, it is a valid benediction over the light, and we should afterward pronounce a benediction over the spices.
12. It is meritorious to light more candles than usual upon the conclu sion of the Sabbath, and to chant the appropriate hymns, thus escort ing the Sabbath upon its departure even as we escort a king upon his leaving town. The name of the pro phet Elijah should also be men tioned, and prayers offered that he may come to bring us the tidings of redemption. For, Elijah would not come on a Friday, in order not to disturb Israel from preparing for the Sabbath, and on the Sabbath we do not pray for his coming, be cause we are uncertain as to wheth er the Sabbath boundary limit ap plies to an altitude above ten handbreadth, and therefore, he could not come on the Sabbath. But when the Sabbath has passed, we pray that he shall come and bring us good tidings. Again it is stated in the Midrash, that every Saturday night, Elijah enters Paradise, where he sits under the Tree of Life, and records the merits of the Israelites who observed the Sabbath. There fore, we mention him gratefully.
13. If possible, one should par take of bread and warm victuals in the Melaveh Malka feast (held on Saturday night). One should set a good table in honor of the departure of the Sabbath. One who is unable to partake of bread, should at least eat some cake or fruit.

What emerges from the above points is that even if an attempt is made to avoid the proper solution to the problem by a compromise, such a substituting for the word “Jew” a word of completely secular connotations, this will not constitute a way out, since the damage would remain both with respect to strength ening the bonds of unity with Jews everywhere, as well as from the point of view of inner strength and security.
e. Of course, no argument can be adduced from the cases of persons who have been converted in the proper manner and have neverthe less caused harm to the Jewish peo pie; on the other hand, there is the possibility that one who merely makes a verbal declaration of his Jewishness may benefit the Jewish people. The demand for a due con version procedure is likewise not negated by the fact that there are “non-Jewish saints” who, as the description implies, are for all that, still “non—Jews.”
f. In the frame of reference in which the question was put, the matter of discrimination was men tioned. Discrimination can, however, only apply to granting or withhold ing of rights, or meting out punish ments; it can have no relevance to the question of Registration which has to do with existing reality.
Let me conclude with the hope and expectation that Eretz Israel in all its aspects, both present and future, should constitute a factor uniting Jews everywhere both ortho dox and non-orthodox of all trends, by attuning itself in all its affairs more and more to the name by which it is known among all the peoples of the world—”the Holy Land.”

KEEPING KOSHER Products from the Philippines ~Japan

During the month of February I went to Manila in the Philippines and to Japan. The purpose of my trip was to investigate companies manufacturing natural foods. In Manila, I inspected a company that produces banana chips; and in Japan I visited plants that produce Japanese food like Tamari, Miso, Shoya, Ramen, etc.
The factory I visited in Manila was managed by a young Jewish man. When I arrived in Manila, I asked this gentleman to take me to the oil refinery that supplies his company with oil because the chips are fried in oil. We drove for two hours, past miles and miles of coconut trees, until we arrived at a city called San Pablo where a large oil refinery is located. The name of the company is San Pablo Manufacturing Cor poration. It produces only coconut oil and is a large supplier of crude coconut oil to the United States. As a matter of fact, the refinery was once owned by Pacific Vegetable Company of America. I learned that no animal fat is refined in the Philippines because there are so few animals and the price of animal fat would be prohibitive. Therefore, there is no problem as far as the fats are concerned.
When we returned to Manila to visit the banana chip factory, we passed a competitor’s truck that listed the products its owners manufactured: banana chips, cheese curls, kracker chips and onion rings. Some of these products, I knew, are manufactured from meat. I asked my young host if the products of his competitor were all produced in the same equipment. His answer was in the affirmative. His own company which I visited, however, produces only banana chips; its whole production is sold to a distributor in California called Spice King. (This distributor was responsible for my
trip to Manila.) These banana chips will have our endorsement.
The next stop was Tokyo, Japan, where I was met by Mr. A. Kazama and Mr. Christopher Dawson of Mitoku Company Ltd. who are agents for export of special kinds of Japanese food sold by Erewhon Com pany in the U.S.A. The Erewhon Company made the arrangements for my trip to Japan in order to certify the following products:

I was given a fabulous tour of companies processing traditional Japanese foods which I had never heard of previously. Many of these companies still use ancient methods of production and are extremely particular about the quality of their product.
First we travelled thrugh the northern part of Japan where we visited a plant in a city called Sendai. The name of the plant is Sendai Miso Shoyu Ltd. In Sendai

we were met at the airport by three men: Mr. Shige kazu Sasaki, a cousin of the President, Mr. Kohichi Mori, Sales Manager and Mr. Ko Haga who is the Brew Master. Later, at the plant we met Mr. Juhbei Sasaki, the Presilent, who is an extremely interesting person and one of the few men we met who speaks English. In this factory they produce Miso and Shoya. The Japanese claim that Miso was first produced thou sands of years ago. Miso in this company is made from soybeans, rice, sea salt and Koji [Aspergillus Orizae). It is also made from soybeans, barley, sea salt and Koji. Koji is an enzyme grown on soybeans; this Koji ferments the Miso. The companies producing for Erewhon must begin with whole soybeans, whereas in the regular commercial Miso, soybean meal is used instead of whole soybean. (Soybean meal is a by product of the soybean oil extraction which makes a cheaper and lower quality product.) This product is used in hot soups and sauces. It is also used as a pickling agent in pickling radish, eggplant, carrot and turnip. Also, as a seasoning and a garnish for vegetables and fish.
Shoya is a similar product and is made from soy beans, roasted cracked wheat, salt and water. It comes in a liquid form and is made the same way as Tamari. Both are used as a seasoning in cooking. There were no problems in this company as far as Kashruth was concerned.
From Sendai we travelled south to Negoya where we spent the night. In the morning we travelled by train to Okazaki. Here we inspected a company called Hatcho Miso Kakkyu, Ltd. We were met by Kiyoshi Kaneko, a gentleman who gave us a tour of the com pany that produced Hatcho Miso. Hatcho Miso is a top-grade of Miso that uses only soya, no rice or barley. The company prides itself on the fact that the Imperial Household uses its Miso. This is a distinct honor as it is extremely difficult to become a supplier of the Emperor. This is widely advertised and well-known in Japan.
We travelled by train to Gifu to visit a noodle plant in Minokami called Sakurai Shokuhin, Ltd. Mr. Yashi aki Sakurai, Vice-President of the Company, met us at the station. They produce four products for Erewhon: Ramen, Hiyamugi, Soba and Udon.
Ramen is made from 80 whole wheat flour and 20% unbleached white wheat flour. In all ramens produced in the United States, partially hydrogenated oils are used, but the ramen processed in this factory uses no oil. The soup stock is produced with Shoya powder, Miso powder, mushroom powder, seaweed powder, onion and natural spices. It also contains carrot, onion and green onion (minced and dried).

Hiyamugi are flat thin noodles made of 100% whole wheat flour.
Soba are noodles produced solely with Soya. Udon is another whole wheat flour noodle.
We then travelled to Shirohama which is a city set in the most beautiful mountainous area of Japan. Here we inspected a plant that manufactures Umeboshi. This plant is called Morisho Shoten and is located in Hidaka at the foot of the Mountains. Umeboshi are the pickled fruits of Prunus Mume, a round fleshy fruit that has a sour taste and looks like an apricot. The literal trans lation of umeboshi is salt plum, though it looks more like an apricot. First we were driven up the high moun tains in the region of Wakayama. The mountainsides were covered with prunus mume trees that were blos soming though it was winter and cold. Alongside these trees were also, trees with fully ripened tangerines. It was an amazing sight: here it was winter and cold and everything was green as in the spring! The prunus mume fruits are picked before they are ripened. In the factory we visited, they are sorted by hand: the larger sizes are preferred because they are soft and fleshy. They are then placed in deep wooden kegs and sprinkled with sea salt. Straw mats are spread on top of the lids and the lids are pressed down by means of large stones. Fermentation enzymes are used to produce lactic and citric acid which are important components of ume boshis. They remain in the vats for a few months, then

they are taken out to dry and are dried in the sunshine for a few days. The product is kept in a keg for one year. Umeboshi is sold white or red. (The red color comes from shiso leaves which is completely natural.) Umeboshi is used to season rice balls or rice rolls. It is a condiment. It is also made into a paste which is used as a spread on sandwiches or rice patties. Morisho Shoten also makes plum concentrate.
From this beautiful part of the world we travelled to Kyoto, one of the two cities that were not bombed at all during the second World War. Here we visited Saito Seikasho, a company that manufactures Koishi Brown Rice crackers, Norimake Brown Rice Crackers and Candies. The crackers are baked from brown rice powder. All crackers in this factory use no oils and are baked with special care to comply with all require ments of the macrobiotics.
In this factory they also manufacture hard and soft candies. The hard candy is called Mizu Ami and the soft candy is referred to as Kombu candy. The Mizu Ami prepared for Erewhon is not the same as that manufactured for the general market. Here, again, very special ingredients are used: very carefully processed sprouted, dried, unhulled barley and carefully cooked sweet rice are the ingredients used in these candies. I was amazed to find these candies tasting so good without sugar, corn syrup or artificial flavors.
The Kombu candy contains barley malt, Kombu powder derived from seaweeds, wheat gluten and Hato
Mugi. Hato Mugi is a grass seed which contains many natural healthful nutrients. The inner wrapper, which usually sticks to the candy, is made from sweet rice starch and is edible.
From Kyoto we went to Himeji where we visited Arimoto Confectionery Company; Rice Cracker Com pany. This company had modern equipment but pro duced the cookies with the same strict adherence to the macrobiotic dietary standards.
The last factory I visited was Yokoi Jozo Kogyo Ltd. where they ferment Brown Rice Vinegar. It was amazing to see the traditional equipment used: large cedar kegs and barrels. These kegs and barrels are isolated for brown rice alcohol only. The manufacturer uses only natural and traditional methods.
“Aino Domeh Sh’miah Leriah”—One cannot com pare seeing to hearing—our sages tell us. Or, as the old adage goes, “Seeing is believing”. Before I took this trip, I must tell you I was very skeptical about macro biotic foods. I could not believe that so much care, time and effort was really expended for the production of such foods. The trip was indeed an experience I will cherish for many years to come and I must thank Erewhon Company for giving me the opportunity to see and investigate for myself. Homemakers interested in these foods should also be grateful to Erewhon Com pany: they may now partake of all the above-mentioned products knowing that they have been thoroughly investigated and are Kosher beyond any doubt.
