detroit bike hub

ARCH 1400: Architectural Design IV Kutil Winter 2018 The Alley Project, or Detroit Bike Hub, was a two-part project.

First being a group project. Later, redeveloping the ideas into an individual project using a place, node, or threshold of the alley.

The Detroit Bike Hub was a proposal to be the main hub of the Detroit Slow Roll to either start or end at. The hub would be a gathering space that would be used by anyone - whether you were riding your bike, customizing your bike, or having lunch in the hub. The alley of the site was designed

by William Teal to be bike storage areas and an interactive bike race lane, the seating/gathering space was designed by Emma Jeffrey inside of the current parking lot area of the alley, and the biking showcasing ramp was designed by me. The alley served as an exterior threshold to the larger place, which was the exisiting parking lot. The design took into architectural condiseration of the back entrances of the surrounding buildings, the exclusive bar, lighting, and the pre-existing function of the alley.

As an individual, I chose to work with the threshold of the street facade of the site. It was the portal into the Detroit Bike Hub. Some architectural challenges were addressing the circulation between bikers and pedestrian.

The showcase ramp allowed for bikes to ride along the ramp while showing their bikes off to the interior and exterior of the hub. The pedestrians would be able to store their bikes inside of the threshold facade and rent MoGo bikes if they did not have a bike to ride in Slow Roll. The interior space of the Detroit Bike Hub consisted of flexibile gathering spaces, water fountains, and the viewing of the bikes from people around Detroit. Both modes of circulation being able to view into Capitol Park was essential in the design. During the Slow Roll, Capitol Park would be blocked off from vehicular traffic to allow the overflow between the spaces.

COE Spaces is an extension proposal for a site in downtown Detroit across from Capitol Park located on Griswold Street. The existing site is used as a parking lot currently. Bridging the gap between the park and the alley, COE Spaces would provide more public/private spaces for all users to either work, live, grab a cup of coffee, have fun in the bike park that is in the basement, or take a shortcut from the alley through the greenway between the buildings and land in the historical Capitol Park. The main idea of using the program to always connect all of the users inside and outside of the site. The bike park can be seen from anywhere on the site. The building’s steep roof plays along the idea of bike ramps, but more importantly allow natural light to seap deep within the building. The facade uses the surrounding buildings around Capitol Park by window heights/widths, scale, verticality, glazing, brick, concrete, and its response to the sidewalk.

PEEK - A - BOO ARCH 1300: Architectural Design III Heidgerken Fall 2017 Peek-A-Boo is a set of double duplexes that are located on Mount Adams in Cincinnati, Ohio. Each duplex contains a 700-900 square feet one single-bedroom and a two-bedroom unit being 1,000-1,400 square feet. The form development was created using the contextual lines of the neighboring buildings, sightlines toward Kentucky/Ohio River, downtown Cincinnati, and some of Oregon Street.

Each duplex was designed to give the occupants two to four of those views, as well as the inner courtyard/entrances to each duplex. Four parking spots were provided underneath the cantilevered one-bedroom unit of the ground level duplex.

Peek-A-Boo allowed walkers on the sidewalk to enjoy the view from the top of the hill by not blocking the view by putting both duplexes side by side. Addressing the streetscape but ignoring the apartment building on the south side of Oregon was a significant part of the design process. Mount Adams’ streets were tightly packed with houses that the views could not be seen from the sidewalk. A path was designed to flow down the northwestern side of the site that allowed walkers to still experience the view and create an access point to and from Baum Street. This placement ensured that privacy of the duplexes would still be kept although people would be walking down the hill. The gate along the street allows for privacy for the north facades of the ground level duplexes, which follows the double skin-layer facades.

The site’s landscape had been regraded to follow the forms of the duplexes. The use of a wood double-skin paneling created a visual stacking experience from the exterior. The skin stopped for entrances and balconies (with the exception of the two-bedroom unit at ground level). At night, the landscape would glow and could be seen from the bottom of the hillside.

ICNIV AD | VOLTERRA INSTITUTE Activated Walls of Volterra

Volterra Study Abroad Studio D. Pitera Summer 2019

The Cachophony Symphony holds an annual procession of 16 lit candles throughout the streets of Volterra. The new Da Vinci Volterra Institute is designed and celebrated from the box that contains these candles.

The Da Vinci Volterra Institute is designed for the research and amplification of the Etruscan and Renaissance culture. The design challenges were access from stairs/street, site geometry, and building height. The building design was inspired by the Cachophony Society project and its symbolic relationship to the city at night. The beacon of light that is celebrated through a procession into the building’s main circulation is a symbol of activity within, around, or passing through.
